Sata drive is not recognized by XP

I have a neo865 and the problem is I can't get XP to recognize more then 130 gbyte of a 250 gbyte SATA drive even after loading the driver that came with the motherboard.  Does anyone know a workaround

You need XP with Service Pack 1 to work with a boot driver larger than 137G. See this for how to get around it:

  • XP Prof installation on Tecra A9 PTS52E - SATA HDD is not recognized

    Hi all,
I have a brandnew Tecra A9 (PTS52E) with Vista Business installed. However, I need XP Prof and have a slipstreamed XP-SP2 CD. The SATA Disk is not recognized from XP setup, so I need a 'F6' driver.
There are a lot of howtos about doing this for the 945 chipset, but I couldn't solve this on my A9 (Mobile 965 Express Chipset). I don't want to buy a USB-Floppydisk drive just for one-time-installation. So I have to build the driver (iastor.sys and more) in the XP setup disc.
Some problems: there seems to be no easy way to do this, because intel only provides *.inf files for the ICH8R (=RAID) controller, which doesn't exist in the A9. So I have to edit the *.inf files, correct?
Another thing: I saw in another posting here the discussion about switching from AHCI to compatibility mode in BIOS. I can't find a way to change this setting.
Aargh, I need this Notebook for my work, on a A8 (which also is mine) I installed XP without any problems.
    Can anyone help?
    Thank you,
    Michael

    Hi,
now i have a new problem: the last reboot after installation finished leads to bluescreen and immediately reboot (so I can't see the stop-message)
During installation the reboot from Harddisk works.
    But so far:
you need the latest Intel Chipset Driver:
    http://downloadcenter.intel.com/T8Clearance.aspx?url=/13499/a08/infinst_autol.exe&agr=N&ProductID=2800&DwnldID=134 99&lang=deu
Next you must extract the files in a temp directory:
    IATA75 _ENU.exe -a -a -pC:\temp\AHCI
    Now edit the file iaahci.inf:
you have to change all the ICH8R related entries (R means RAID, which isn't supported in that A9 version of the chipset) to ICH8. Also change the related PCI-device IDs from 0x8086h/0x2821h (Vendor/Device ID) to 0x8086h/0x2824h.
The best way I think is to copy all ICH8R related sections and replace "ICH8R" with "ICH8" and "2821" with "2824".
As you need the driver during installation, you also have to change these settings in txtsetup.oem.
The next steps I found in a ASUS forum (they have similar problems):
create a new (personalized) installation CD for Windows XP
STEP 1: Modify the original XP installation files
    a) Copy all the files and directories of the XP installation disk to your hard drive
Ex: form D:*.* (your installation CD) to C:/XP/*.* (your HD)
    b) Create the following directory path:
    XP\$OEM$\$1\drivers\SATA
    c) Copy all the files of the Intel Matrix Storage Manager (see solution I) to that directory: XP\$OEM$\$1\drivers\SATA
    iaAhci.inf, iaAhci.cat, iaStor.inf, iaStor.cat, iaStor.sys, and TxtSetup.oem.
    d) Copy iaStor.sys to XP\i386 directory
    e) Modify the file TXTSETUP.SIF located at: XP\i386
=> You can read and understand what you are doing reading Adding OEM drivers to Windows Setup at http://www.windowsserverx64.com/CSK/technical_articles/hardware/56.aspx (really nice article form Robert. Thanks)
    Use: notepad.exe to edit it.
e.1) Under [HardwareIdsDatabase] add the following lines
    right after GenFloppyDisk = "flpydisk"
    PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2821&CC_0106 = "iaStor"
    PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2824&CC_0106 = "iaStor"
    and before PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1230 = "intelide",
Note: dont touch any other line. Be carefull, the name iaStor => is case sensitive.
    e.2) under [SourceDisksFiles] add
    iaStor.sys = 1,,_x,4,1
Note: There are several [SourceDisksFiles] sections. I added the line in all the existing sections.
    e.3) under [SCSI.Load] add
    iaStor = iastor.sys,4
    e.4) under [SCSI] add
    iaStor = "Intel(R) 82801HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controller (Mobile ICH8M-E/M)"
Note: If your controller is a different one, use the right one. Read the contents of the TxtSetup.oem file for more information.
    f) Create a new file called (use notepad) WINNT.SIF and locate it at: XP\i386

Now use a tool to create a bootable CD. I prefer "AutoStreamer" because I also have to slipstream SP2 into my XP Prof. CD.
With it you generate an iso image. Burn it to disk and that's it.
Like I've said: installation works well, just the last reboot from disk creates a bluescreen and therefor a bootloop.

  • Pioneer sata dvd-rw not recognized

I have a Pioneer sata dvd-rw not recognized problem.  I installed a new Pioneer dvd burner.  It is Sata.  It works fine, but every time I boot into Win xppro  sp3 I get the found new hardware, it lists the correct drive and has the error that it cannot be installed.  Just have to cancel that message, but yesterday I went to install a new copy of windows on another drive connected to the the pc, the windows cd booted up asked the usual questions and then started setup and message came up and said it could not continue, because there was no cd drive.  Once I quit laughing and pointing to the cd drive,   I figured I better find out if it came be fixed.  I also have a sata hard drive connected internally to the pc.  This works fine also.  If I boot to the sata drive the sata dvd burner is recognized and it is installed. Works fine.  Does anyone want to tackle this one?  I tried showing the windows cd where the  burner was and expained to it that it was inside the drive already, but it just won't listen.  The pc worked fine with the old ide drive.  Thanks in advance.

  • New hard drive is not recognized by my MacBook Pro.

New hard drive is not recognized by my MacBook Pro. The supplier says I need to update my BIOS. True? How do I do that?
Hard drive: NN2-72-500-SSE Seagate Momentus 7200.4 (ST9500423AS) 500GB Laptop Hard Drive
Mac OS: Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5

I went through a similar issue with a Seagate Momentus 750GB HDD/8GB SSD with my late-2011 MBP.  No matter what I tried, the machine would not recognize the drive.
To test it, I installed the drive in an old ThinkPad, and it worked fine.  Then I tried installing it in my PS3, and the drive worked fine there, too.  It was only the MBP which had issues.
I don't *think* Macs have a BIOS to update.  But I know my MBP has issues with certain HDD's (including another external which works fine on other Macs and all Windows machines).
You might be able to find my thread by searching under my username, perhaps something in there will offer a tip.  Otherwise, you might have to go the same route I did: install a WD Scorpio Black instead.  Or upgrade to an SSD.
    Good luck to you-

  • Need to do a full restore but my backup drive is not recognized

My backup drive is not recognized by Migration Assistant nor on OS x 10.6.8 start up.  Need a full restore via Time Machine.
On startup with new drive, I initially selected to restore from Time Machine backup.  It asked to connect the drive which I did but it did not recognize.  So I moved on thinking I could restore through Time Machine.
Did some research and decided to try Migration Assistant.  Again, the only disc displayed was the hard drive and not the external "My Passport" drive.
I can see the backups on the My Passport drive and even checked (repaired) that disc and still not working.
Any ideas on how to get this to work?  Needless to say, I was very pleased with the concept of Time Machine but if the restore doesn't work it doesn't do much good.
    Thanks in advance!

I think I found the right path.
    - Inserted the OS x 10.6.8 install DVD
    - Selected language
    - Rather than continue with OS install, selected the "Utilities" menu item and found the restore from backup option
Next step, the search found the external drive.  From there I selected the date and now the restore is running.
    Thanks for the replies!

  • SATA drive no longer recognized???

    Hello all,
I got the MSI Neo4 Platinum & A64 3000+ RevE and it was running fine. Then, last week, my board stopped recognizing my Samsung 160GB SATA HD. The drive is OK, I hooked it up to a friend's comp and it booted up normally. But now, It does not recognize the SATA drive in BIOS. I also have an old IDE drive (40GB Quantum Fireball...seriously) hooked up and the MB recognizes that drive. So, is this an RMA case or am I missing something? I've tried new SATA cables and all 4 SATA ports and different power leads. I don't have an extra SATA HD lying around that I could test the board with, so is there another way to make sure the SATA ports are operational? I was thinking about trying to find a SATA to USB connector and try the ports with my keychain flash drive. Think that would work just to test the ports?
    Thanks in advance

    OK more frustration,
So, my friend lent me a 160GB Seagate Barracuda SATA drive to test. Neither his drive nor my drive show up in SATA ports 1-4. When I attach either drive in ports 5-8 (the Silicon Image RAID ports), I get a message as the BIOS is closing - when you get the screen saying to press F4 to enter RAID setup - that says "No valide device"  Must be Italian? But the name of whichever drive I had in those ports is listed...so at least the motherboard can see the drive in those ports, just can't use it. So maybe the SATA ports 1-4 are fried? But why are the drives Invalide in the SATA ports when they're definitely functional?
Here's what I don't understand though... In the "Standard CMOS Settings" menu in the BIOS, under the date/time, I see 4 listings all for IDE (>IDE Primary Master, >IDE Primary Slave, etc.) but no listings for SATA. My HD used to show up in that menu, but I don't remember if it was under "IDE master" or "SATA master" Does anyone know what that should look like?
The drive doesn't show up in the "Boot Order" either.
    Any ideas?

  • My external hard drive is not recognized

I have the apple external disk drive.  I have used it numerous times.  I just plugged it in and the computer is not recognizing it.  I have tried both USB ports.  How can I fix this?

A: USB desktop or 2.5" port powered?
B: did you just install mavericks
C:  DOES IT show in disk utility?
Can you confirm it on another Mac?
Apple doesnt make HD, what HD is it marked as?
Likely its a dead SATA bridge card, a very very common problem with USB and external HD

  • Trying to install original drive into secondary bay, but drive is not recognized

I have a DV7 QE, and replaced the hard drive that came with it with an SSD. So far, so good. But then I installed the original drive into the secondary bay, and it is not recognized. Are there some kind of jumper settings I need to set to make it recognizable as an additional disk drive?

I think so. I have never had a laptop with two SATA hard drives but I had to set jumpers on a desktop. The first hard drive was set as primary and the other drive had the jumper on slave. That was a long time ago but you can't go wrong with that. I have noticed that some laptops had disabled the second SATA slot. Make sure that the slot is not disabled in the BIOS.

  • External hard drive is not recognized after attempt to format

I just got a new macbook and couldn't use my external hard drive because it was formatted on a PC and only allowed me to read the data. I backed up the data on the 250gb hd and then used Disk Utility to erase the hd and format it as "Mac OS extended (journaled)." After beginning, Disk Utility stopped working and showed up as "not responding" in the Activity Monitor.
Now the hd does not show up on the desktop and can only be seen in Disk Utility. If I try to erase again or partition the hd the utility stops responding. If I try to zero out the drive it continues to say "preparing to zero" indefinately. Now the hd is also not recognized by windows except in the windows disk utility, but it does not even give the option of formatting/initializing it, so that is not an option.
Has anyone ever seen anything like this before, or have any idea of something that I haven't tried yet. I really want to get the drive working and have exhausted all the ideas I can come up with. The internet has not provided too many ideas either.
Thanks so much for your help.
Black MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I have crazy solution to format it to FAT 32, it work a couple times on my several MAxtor, and Western Digital HD. But this is the last resort and if you are not handy and familiar, don't do it.
It happen on my external HD, so I crack the enclosure open, pulled the HD out and attached it as internal HD on a PC after adjusting the jumper to master and make sure no other HD attached to the motherboard. Make sure the motherboard detected (you can see it from bios menu).
Insert a bootable installer disk before XP ('98, ME, or 2000), and start from there until a promt comes, and type fdisk and you delete the old partition and create a new partition and restart once using the disk still and format it using FAT 32.
After that you put it back to the enclosure, and mount it to MacBook as a new HD with default factory format.
If you don't have the installer disk, this might help :
    http://www.bootdisk.com/
But if your maxtor still under warranty better talk to them first and they might willing to reformat it for you.
Hope this help your external back and let you use it on your MacBook.

  • External Hard Drive suddenly not recognized

I have a WD 500GB external hard drive that I use to back up my data. I only have one hard drive as I'm currently living abroad and couldn't bring a 2nd with me.
I plugged in my external last night to back up my MacBook Pro and it backed everything up. I even went into Time Machine to go back and restore a file or two and that worked without problem. I have been using this drive for about a year to back up everything on my Mac and, although sensitive, it seems to work okay.
I plugged it in this morning and nothing. My Mac will not recognize that the drive is not plugged in in Time Machine or in Finder. If I go to Apple Logo > About This Mac > More Info... > Storage tab, it just shows my internal hard drive and my CD/DVD drive. If I click on Disk Utility with the drive plugged in, it shows my Hard Drive (Macintosh HD) with two icons, one inset below the other and both in black font, and then my external hard drive has two underneath, but only the top one is black font - the one underneath is greyed out.
    It goes like this:
    250.06 GB Hitachi...
         Macintosh HD
    500.08 GB WD My Passport
         Time Machine Backups (greyed out)
    Superdrive (greyed out)
When I clicked on the 500GB one and told it to repair/verify it said the disk was working fine. I tried unplugging and replugging in the drive (it is not recognized in Finder so I could not properly eject the disk). I restarted my Mac with it unplugged and plugged it in afterward and nothing.
The HD itself is working, the light is blinking (not solid) and I can feel the hard drive spinning, but I'm at a loss as to what to do to get my Mac to recognize it again.
    Any suggestions would be helpful.
    Thank you!

I also wanted to add, when I click on the greyed out Time Machine hard drive that's listed and then click "Info", this is what it says:

    Hi!
I have an external USB drive that is HTF+ formatted. It is not recognized by Windows XP. If I start the windows disk manager it gives me the option to initialize the drive. Do I dare to do this? Will it not erase the information on the drive?

Hi Anders and welcome to Discussions,
I have an external USB drive that is HTF+ formatted. It is not recognized by Windows XP. If I start the windows disk manager it gives me the option to initialize the drive. Do I dare to do this? Will it not erase the information on the drive?
    Yes it will !!
Although with the BootCamp 3.0 Drivers (from the OSX Snow Leopard DVD) and the 3.1 Driver update (downloadable) Apple has introduced read-access to HFS+ partitions from Windows this feature seems to have some serious problems for some people.
Personally I see this feature as "experimental" at the moment.
XP itself knows nothing and therefor can not use/see HFS+ partitions and GPT (GUID partition table) harddisks.
You might wanna have a look (or buy) at MacDrive http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive/ which right now is the better solution.
    Thanks for any help!

    Hope it helps

  • Hard drive is not recognized

i just recently have made the pc to mac switch and am now in the process of transfering all of my music and what have you. i didn't get very far due to the external hard drive that i use is not recognized by the mac. ive had friends plug it into their macbooks without a problem, and it still works with the pc. so im wondering if anyone may know the proper diagnosis for such an ailment?

Ah I see, probably because it's an older version and does not run on a Intel iMac.
Check out your finder preferences to see if you have hard disk checked to be visible on desktop: Finder>preferences, general tab.
How do you connect your external drive to your iMac> firewire or USB2?
For example have you tried a different USB port? Maybe your port or ports not giving as much power as required to operate the device. Is the hard-disk self powered?
    Try a different cable.
Also what make and model is your external drive, someone might help if there is an issue with particular drives that are not mounting.

  • New Internal 1 TB hard drive is not recognized by OSX 10.5 Install

My iMac G5 iSight was not booting up. I brought it to the apple store and they diagnosed that it needed a new hard drive. Decided to DIY and save $350. Bought a Hitachi SATA 3.5" 1 TB hard drive. Installation was not too difficult. It took several attempts to format, then installed OSX. Now just a gray screen and fan comes on at start up. When I run the utilities program on the install disk the hard drive does not appear in list for formatting or for target drive for OSX installation. However the disk shows up under system profiler SATA drive. I did not see any jumpers on this drive or the drive I removed. I also removed the 1 GB ram extension because I was getting kernal panic when trying to install the OS. Any help/advice would be appreciated.

The iSight models are NOT user repairable except for RAM installation. You will need to take your computer to an Apple Store or an AASP for the proper HD installation.
