SATA driver install in an already built PC

Hello:
I have to briefly add a SATA drive to my system (see below) to recover some data from it. I have no SATA drives in the system now and have not installed the Silicon Image drivers. Do I need to do this or is this strictly for RAID applications. Right now the SATA is disabled in the BIOS. Would I just enable it and install the drivers from the CD when XP detects the H/W? I have 2 PATA drives in there right now. One of these would be removed to temporarily make room for this SATA drive.

Asmedia 106x SATA Driver install

I run the install for the Asmedia 106x SATA Driver install for my Z77A-GD80 motherboard. The install appears to complete successfully. When I go back and scan my computer with the MSI Live Update program, it shows the old driver still in place.

T410s SATA driver install

I have a stable of T410s machines that came with XP Pro loaded. I need to install Exterprise XP Pro. Unfurtunately, once the Enterprise edition is installed, the SATA driver won't install and we're stuck in Compatability Mode.
I have the exact driver (from the NIB machine and website), and try the force-feed method (Update Driver/Don't Search/Have Disk/point to iaStor.inf in the IMSM folder [taken from the factory installation and web download of WinXP]). The machine blue screens during the install. Has anyone been able to load this driver?

I'm not sure exactly what steps you followed, but i believe what could be the problem is that you never did run the install.cmd.
Try to download this driver, run to extract and it should be under "C:\DRIVERS\WIN\IRST":

Then follow these steps (since you already got Windows XP running and compatibility mode set i guess you could start with step 9):
1. Power off the computer.
2. Power on the computer.
3. Press the F1 key to enter the BIOS Setup Utility when the ThinkPad logo is seen on the screen. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
4. Select Config.
5. Select Serial ATA (SATA).
6. Select Compatibility.
7. Press the F10 key to save the new setup, and then select Yes.
8. Restart the computer.
9. Go to C:\DRIVERS\WIN\IRST\PREPARE, and double-click install.cmd.
10. Power off and on the computer.
11. Press the F1 key to enter the BIOS Setup Utility when the ThinkPad logo is seen on the screen. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
12. Select Config.
13. Select Serial ATA (SATA).
14. Select AHCI.
15. Press the F10 key to save the new setup, and then select Yes. The computer will reboot and Windows XP will start.
16. The "Welcome to the Found New Hardware Wizard" appears. Click No, not this time, and then click Next.
17. Select Install from a list or specific location (Advanced), and then click Next.
18. Select Search for the best driver in these locations. Then select Include this location in the search:, specify the path, C:\DRIVERS\WIN\IRST, and click Next. The "Completing the Found New Hardware Wizard" appears.
19. Click Finish.
20. When the "System Settings Change" window appears, click Yes. The computer restarts.

HP Pavilion P7-1141 Computer won't boot with 2nd SATA drive installed

I'm having a problem booting brand new computer when a second SATA hard drive ws installed into P7-1141
Took a working SATA drive from my other computer and installed it into this new computer. But computer only hangs on startup screen after the animated logo draws...then sits there doing nothing..
My configuration:
HD 1 (boot drive, original that came with computer) plugged into SATA1
HD2 (second SATA drive) plugged into SATA2
DVD drive (original) plugged into SATA3
Will boot if I unplug SATA cable, but won't if it's plugged in..
To make sure I didn't break anything, I put the SATA drive back into original computer with the same power cable and SATA cable and it works. That is, it shows up as a second hard drive on my old computer.
Any ideas?

Ok. I've done a little research and right or wrong, I'm following a suggestion to re-format the drive before I attach it. Reason: Someone posted that if you had a Windows XP or Vista formatted HD, that it will need to be re-formatted before being installed into a Windows 7 OS. Maybe right, maybe wrong...but I'm going to try anyways. Will keep posted.
Also, looked at my Event Log Errors and found this in the entry:
The device, \Device\Harddisk6\DR6, is not ready for access yet.
Not sure what this means yet..but working on it. If anyone knows off-hand, i would like to solve this.
Anyways, I'm re-formatting the disk now and will try it again. I have my doubts, because why wouldn't an NTFS formatted drive show up with any operating system? Maybe there's an obvious answer, but that's why I'm here!
Other comments:
I checked for latest SATA driver and must have it..at least according to this HP site since it only lists the 'original', so I assume it's there's only one released for this MB and that I must have the latest and greatest.
There are many other posts on Windows 7 hanging on "Starting Windows'..and the above is what I pulled from them...haven't found 'the' solution posted yet....

How to Install a 2nd SATA drive

Hi,
I asked this before and got many views to my question but no responses, so I thought I would try one more time.
I have a PM G4 Gigabit ethernet and have two ATA drives installed and one SATA drive installed via a SATA PCI card.
What I would like to know is how do you or can you install a second SATA drive on top of the one that's already there? There is room for it to fit on top of the one I have installed, but the sled only provides for one to be mounted. The ATA sled is configured for two.
Any way to get a sled that fits where the SATA drives are installed, or how is that done? My PCI card does have an available SATA connector.
Sorry for the seemingly basic question, but I really don't know the answer.

Thnaks for the response David. Well, bot do I feel silly. I now see what I somehow never saw before. there is a space in between the ATA driove slots and the SATA drive slot whicvh is where the 4th drive fits. Well, Duuuhhhh?
I have thought of going with a SATA external drive, thing is there are not many SATA external drives out there, also would need a SATA pci card for that. I see that Firm Tek is just now getting into that so I may wait a while. Its' a 160GB SATA drive so it would be a nice addition to backups, testing drives etc.

I want to fit a SSD to my 21.5 3.06ghz mid 2010 IMAC; Is it possible to install the current 500gb sata drive into my older 20inch A1224 IMac?

My A1224 20 inch Imac has a damaged HD, so I am wondering if the 500 gb sata drive installed in my mid 2010 imac can be installed as I am looking to upgrade to SSD and would like to make use of the 'spare' HD.
If t.his is not possible can someone recommend the best drive to by for the older mac?

My recommendation for the older drive would be to use it to create a bootable backup, that way you would have 2 backups. Your basic Time Machine backup and a redundant (very good idea for backups!!!) bootable drive. All you need is an expensive enclosure which you can find for less than $30.

Install 3rd sata drive?

I have a 300G and a 500G internal SATA drives installed on my G5. What do I need to do to install a 3rd internal 200G SATA? Thank you for any help with this.

Install second SATA Drive

I currently have a PM G4 with two internal ATA drives installed and one SATA drive installed. I want to install a second SATA drive and have the extra power connection and SATA connection, but my question is where do I get side rails so I can install the secong SATA drive on top of the first similar to how the ATA drives are connected.

Windows boot hangs at logo when 2nd SATA drive attached

I have a system with a K9NBPM2-FID mobo.
I have several IDE drives and two SATA drives installed. The two SATA drives are a 150GB WD Raptor and a 320GB Seagate.
I've had this system for awhile, and the Raptor is installed in the computer case, and originally, I had the 320GB Seagate in a trayless SATA enclosure (which is in the case). When I had that configuration, the system would occasionally hang on the Windows logo screen (the one with the scrolling bar), and I'd have to pop the 320GB out, and then it'd reboot ok.
I thought that maybe the trayless enclosure might be getting flaky, so when I doing some work on the system recently, I stuck the 320GB drive into the enclosure and connected it directly to the mobo via a new SATA cable.
Since then, I've noted that "hanging at boot" behavior more often :(... And, now that the drive is in the case, I can no longer just pop the 320GB drive out anymore :(...
The 320GB drive itself seems to be ok, i.e., once the system boots, it seems to work ok.
At this point, I'll probably pull the drive out of the case, and put it back into the trayless enclsure, but I was wondering if anyone might know what the problem might be or suggest how I could get this system to boot reliably with the 320GB drive plugged in?

I don't know if this may be involved, but I was doing some googling, and found this:

The Seagate PDF for the 320GB drive specifies that it does support NCQ:

I checked the driver settings for the SATA drives under Windows Device Manager, and I noticed that "enable command queuing" was checked on all of the SATA channels, but I figured I'd try disabling that "enable command queuing" and see what would happen.
I've done several reboots after that, including powering completely off, etc., and the system appears to boot ok, now, even with the Seagate 320GB drive plugged into the trayless enclosure.
I'll keep any eye on this, but I'm hoping that maybe that was the reason for the problem.

Windows 7 Clean Install won't detect SATA Drive

I'm trying to install Windows 7 on my desktop that is currently running Vista and XP on a dual boot. I want to eliminate the dual boot and do a clean install with Windows 7. I have a Western Digital SATA drive WD2500KS. If I try to install "custom" it will not detect the drive and wants to load drivers. If I try to upgrade it shows the drive and both partitions and want's to know which partition. I ran the Windows 7 compatibility program and it shows the drive and no issues pertaining to installation. How do I get a clean install to recognize the hard drive? Processor is Intel Core2 Quad CPU 2.4 Ghz.

What machine is this? homebuilt or OEM?
Do you have a Dell computer? It appears that the built-in Dell SATA drivers aren't recognized during the Windows 7 extraction portion of setup (when your BIOS is set with RAID Autodetect / AHCI). Might also work for a non-Dell PC:
note: you should install the latest BIOS update from Dell's support.dell.com website first, or your manufacturers website for a non-Dell computer.
1. Boot into the BIOS (press F2 while the Dell splash screen is showing, will be different for a non-Dell).
2. Go to Drives > SATA Operation. (will be different for a non-Dell)
3. Change from "RAID Autodetect / AHCI" to "RAID Autodetect / ATA".
4. Press escape, choose Save / Exit.
Also, play it safe, shut down your PC and disconnect all USB devices (except the keyboard / mouse, they do not need to be disconnected) before trying to reinstall.

Portege M400: Can I install a Western Digital SATA drive?

Can I install a Western Digital SATA drive in my Portege M400?
I've tried and failed.
I can copy the system resore CD to the new HD but the result is a blue-screen failure when the system boots.
I can't get a clean install of Windows XP to even start -- the HD is not recognised despite using the Toshiba SATA/RAID drivers from a floppy.
I've tried using Norton Ghost to copy an image of the existing (working) HD to the new HD but that also results in a blue-screen failure.
Is there something proprietary about the SATA?
Will the laptop only work with the original HD?
Will a replacement (larger) Toshiba HD work?

Power down the notebook and start it pressed ESC key.
On the third bios page (pg down) you find the raid configuration.
I assume you actually have already the RAID setting but it is not really written to the HDD.
At first remove the RAID and change to JOBD the password confirmation 1234.
Save settings und reboot. Enter bios again and change it from JOBD to RAID (again 1234).
After this your HDD will work fine!

Question installing SATA drive on Delta 2 Platinum mobo

I just got a brand spankin' new Raptor 74gb SATA drive I will be installing on my brand new MSI K7N2 Delta 2 Platinum mobo, and I have a few questions.
First off, I don't have any desire to run a RAID configuration but I want the SATA drive to be my boot drive. So my question is, do I still have to enable RAID in the bios? Or is just Enabling SATA enough?
Second, when I go to install WinXP, do I have to hit F6 and install any drivers?
The mobo did come with a floppy that reads

If I do need drivers, does that floppy have the drivers I will need when installing windows? Or is there a place to download the latest ones I will need?
I am slipstreaming XP SP2 into my XP installation.
Also, I've read that I'm not supposed to have any PATA drives hooked up when installing windows which makes sense.
oh yeah...one more thing...i'm going to be using an AMD xp 3200+ 400mhz bus processor and all I have is three sticks of Crucial PC2100 DDR memory that I wanted to use since I already own it. Is this a bad idea?

Thanks for the quick response...I'll be building my system this weekend...I'm waiting for my PC Power & Cooling Silencer 470 ATX power supply that will arrive tomorrow. This bad boy should give plenty of juice (26a on 12v) to power my rig. It's good to know the pc2100 can be used to get the system up and running, but I'll be investing in some pc3200 shortly. I thought of a few more questions if you'd be kind enough to reply:
1) When I buy the PC3200, I plan on getting 2 sticks of 512 and running dual channel. I see you run Crucial ram. Are there any issues with Crucial ram running dual channel that you know of?
2) I have a SB live soundcard but plan on getting an Audigy 2 zs soon, should i just use the onboard sound for now? Is the onboard sound as good as an SB live?
3) Do you recommend using the MSI "LiveUpdate" feature to update bios and drivers, or should I just go with the Nvidia UDP v5.10 and update bios manually? Or maybe I don't even want to update the bios?

Installing a single sata drive on a K7N2 Delta M/B

where do I start?
If I run the raid setup, it can see it fine in there right size and eveything, but can't see the drive (or any options for sata) in the bios, or anything relating to it in windows.
Currently running XP with two IDE drives (no raid)
Can I use the sata drive without using the raid?
Does the sata drive have to be the primary drive?

not sure if this is what yur lookin for but when i first got my raptor, i already had like a 200 gb and a 120 gb ide HD on my k7n2 delta2 plat, so i was like ok reformat time! since i didnt have that much stuff. i just disconnected my 2 ide drives, stuck in my 74gb raptor, and installed windows on that. but you have to be sure all the other drives are discconected while yur doin this. if u have other drives connected, it might now work, i got a boot disk failure at first! i was like lol lets do it again! but yea after i installed windows on the raptor, i just reformatted the other 2 hd's as dump drives. i hope this helps...in some way at least

Trying to install a 400GB barracuda 7200.10- tried using on board sata port 1 but no joy. so bought a silicon image pci card sil 3114, but still unable to get that install correctly to recognise the sata drive.
have tried various configurations of ATA settings in the BIOS but with no effect. ???
but when i look in device manager the sil 3114 sata raid controller is okay but the sil 3114 satalink controller has the yellow !, i have tried updating the driver it says it has the latest.
would appreciate if anyone could shed some like in where i'm going wrong- other than opening up the pc

You need to limit your SATA2 drive to SATA1 mode(since your board doesn't support SATA2), that can be done with HDD jumper configuration:
If still doesn't work, check your BIOS version:
- BIOS reported incorrect CPU temperature.
- Support HDD size over 136.9GB.

Can I install a SATA drive in Mirror Drive Door G4?

I am looking at a Seagate 500 GB SATA drive at a great price at MWave ($109.) but see that SATA may require a different cable connector from the IDEs that I normally use in my box. Can I buy some kind of adaptor cable, or do I have to get a card of some kind. Where and how much?
Or, could I install the SATA (it's a ST3500630AS) in an external enclosure that fits ATA 133 3.5 hard drives?

You'd need a Mac compatible PCI card containing a SATA controller. The FirmTek SeriTek 1S2 or Sonnet Tempo is a popular two port choice (they're effectively the same card) and are available for around $70.
The Sonnet Tempo at least comes with a single SATA data cable, and a single power converter cable that allows you to use a legacy molex power connector (as found in the G4s) to power a SATA drive. Some SATA drives come with both power connectors anyway, hence the converter cable isn't required, but I don't think the Seagates do.
I use SATA drives in my G4 as they're marginally faster, the cabling is generally easier and more importantly they can also be moved to newer Macs in the future which support SATA drives natively. For me the extra cost of a SATA card was worthwhile.
