SATA drives not being detected - K8N Neo4 Platinum

I have the same problem, different PSU!
msi k8n neo4 platinum pcb 1.0
3000 64 939
corsair 1gb dual channel ddr400
nvidia 8800gts
antec truepower 550 (19a @ 12v)
used to run 2 ide maxtor 120 and 80
added in a sata dvd writer, worked for 6 months
added in a sata 1TB seagate 7200, sata fails a majority of the time
same symptons now persist as in original post.
:< either bios detects both sata drives, neither, or it crashes. this happens respectively rarely, uncommon, and most common
what ive tried:
updated all mainboard, bios, video drivers to the most up to date (i had to in order for bios to detect the full size of the 1TB)
no ide, same problems
only 1 sata, with and without ide, same problems
the sata only works after a long period of time (or randomly), that i dont use it
(ive had both sata unplugged for 12 hours, booted up this morning with them and it detected, i selected safe mode boot, after making it through a majority of the load, it crashed)
testing a new psu in a day or so, much more powerful. ill give you all my results.

The cables aren't overly bent?
"...worked for 6 months"
"...fails a majority of the time"
Not very relevant, but since i found the FAQs, and there are no less than four FAQs for hard disks http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=prodfaq&maincat_no=1&cat2_no=&cat3_no=&prod_no=165#menu :
"Silicon Image Si3114R Raid bios doesn't have JBOD setting in it, why?
In the new Silicon Image BIOS, JBOD already been renamed as "Concatenation".
If you want to use single SATA HDD or when tou want use each SATA HDD as IDE mode, you can choose "Concatenation" function in Silicon RAID BIOS."
"I am using a SATA hard drive with NCQ technology on this motherboard and I am experiencing problems. How do I fix it?
The issue depends on the Southbridge chipset. Nvidia is currently working on an updated nForce driver to address the issues with certain hard drives.
You could contact Nvidia support to ask for the new driver if there is one. If there is not any new driver to solve the issue, please disable NCQ on your system." /My fattening. /

  • Hp v235r flash drive not being detected on my computer

    Hi,
I am using hp v235r flash drive for more than 5 years. It's not being detected on my computer since two days. Can any one solve my problem, as there is lot of important data stored in it and hasn't been backed up recently.

    Hello budda48,
Its possible the driver for the pen drive is corrupted in your computer, or the drive has met its end of life.
First, confirm that the Pen Drive is seen by other computers. Plug it in to another computer that you havent tried yet.
If it is not working on other computers, then the usb drive is corrupted and there wont be anything else we can do.
If it is working in other computers, then try these steps to troubleshoot the Pen Drive.
Confirm that the port on the computer is not bad. Choose a different port to insert the drive. Next…
Part 1: Make sure that the drive has a drive letter assigned in Disk Management.
Open Computer Management by right clicking on Computer and clicking Manage.
Click on Disk Management. Give it a moment to open the view of the drives installed.
Look for a drive that does not have an assigned drive letter and is not labeled as System Reserved.
Note: System reserved drives are reserved by Windows and will not allow you to assign a letter.
Right-click the unlabeled drive and click Change drive letter and paths…
Click Add and then click OK to select the first available drive letter.
If the Change drive letter and paths… option is not available, make sure that the drive is Online.
If the drive is Offline, right-click the disk number and click Online.
Part 2: If the drive does have a letter assigned and it still does not work, uninstall the driver.
You can safely remove any usb drivers that are not in use (hidden drivers). Devices that get plugged in later will simply reinstall its needed driver again.
Remove the pen drive from the computer if it’s attached.
Right click Computer and click on Properties. In the System window on the left side, click on Advanced System Properties.
Choose the Advanced tab and click on Environment Variables… button at the bottom.
Under System Variables, click on the New… button
Type this in the box that pops up. Variable Name: devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices and also give the Variable Value: 1
Click OK on all the open windows to close them out.
Go to Computer Management again and click on Device Manager. Go to View at the top of the window and click on Show Hidden Devices.
Click on the drop down arrow for Universal Serial Bus Controllers to open the list. Look for any USB Mass Storage Device that is hidden (greyed out) and delete it. There may be several and it’s ok to delete all those hidden USB Mass Storage Devices.
When you connect the pen drive to the computer again, give it a minute to reinstall the driver.

  • Hard Drive not being detected

So my work was giving away old Power Mac G5. They were old and were restored to factory defaults. I wanted to mainly use it for storage. I went out to the store and bought a 1TB hard drive. When I installed it, I got a message saying that the OS couldn't read the hard drive. I figured it was because it wasn't in the correct file format. I went to my disk utility to try format in the Mac OS Extended format. After the two hour format process, I restarted the computer from some other software I was installing. Upon restart, the new terabyte drive wasn't detected. Here is a copy of the Disk Utility log from when I first turned on the system with the hard drive being recognized till when I restarted the system.

As of right now, the system does not recognize the hard drive. I know the connection is good because I have another hard drive that reads just fine. I don't have another place to test the hard drive because I only have an iMac. Can anyone help with this or provide any pointers?? Currently running Mac OS X 10.5.8 Dual 2 GHz Power PC G5.

So I actually seemed to have solved this, to a degree. From what I could read through other help forums, there seems to be a limit on the transfer rate between the system and the hard drive. The OS has a cap of 150 megs/sec, but the hard drive operates faster than that. In order to fix this, you have to put a jumper on pins 5 and 6 on the back of the drive. This was slightly annoying because the hard drive does not come with jumper connectors. I had to find a jumper from another hard drive, and even then, it didn't fit exactly and had to use some strength to get it on.
While it does seem to be operating without any issue now, I still don't understand why it was able to read and detect the hard drive prior to formating.

  • IDE drives not being detected

Yesturday I built a computer from all brand new parts listed in my sig. However, the motherboard can't seem to detect any IDE drives. It is not crashing, it just says 'None' on the 4 IDE devices. I even tried connecting just the one DVD drive as the primary master on IDE 1 (blue part of IDE cable going into MB and the end going into the drive, middle connecter left open) and it still couldn't detect the drive. I've made certain the IDE cable is the correct way round (it doesn't go in any other way), and i've used a different IDE cable that I know works, but still the MB cannot detect the drive. The drive's jumper is set to Master (i have also tried cable select). JBAT1 on the MB is set to "keep data".
I have seen some odd behaviour that may shed some light. When I do not connect the IDE cable to the drive (so it only has the power in it), the lights come on and the DVD drive tray can open. But when I connect the IDE cable to it, the lights do not come on, and you cannot open the tray, as if there was no power to it. I asked my cousin and he said it sounds like the device is being earthed. Is that possible with an IDE cable?
The second thing I noticed was everytime I started the computer with a cold boot (ie. power down then power on as opposed to reset), it said "CMOS checksum failed - Defaults loaded". I thought this could have been a battery problem so I replaced the battery with a new one of the same model, but it is still resetting the defaults.
Apart from failing to detect the IDE drives and CMOS checksum errors the MB seems to be alright. It correctly identifies the CPU and the amout of memory. The back plate diagnostic connecter that came with the MB says everything is OK.
    Any ideas?

Hi guys, thanks for your replies. Its been a busy week and I hadn't got a chance to reply myself.
I've been using the computer for a few days now. Sometimes the drives fail to detect and BIOS defaults get loaded again, but I just loosen some of the screws that hold the motherboard to the case and it starts working again. I am very concerned about this broken wire. It defintely looks like a dodgy board and I am not happy with its unreliability. Check out the pics:
Board (its on the top right)
    Close up
I think Ebuyer are gonna be a pain to get this returned to them. I have a feeling they are just going to throw me to MSI support to get it repaired or replaced.
If anyone knows anything about this wire please let me know . Thanks!

  • E4200 Router my hard drive not being detect on USB after firmware upgrade

I just updated to the new firmware 1.0.02 and the USB stop working for my External Hard WD 500GB harddrive. I had to roll back to firmware 1.0.01 for it work.  Is anybody having that problem?

Everyone else seems to be having a problem with the media server. Maybe the fix you're looking for will be on the next firmware roll later this month.

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum not detecting hard drive

    Hi,
what may cause a K8N Neo4 Platinum to not detect an IDE hard drive? no matter what i try the mobo never sees the hard drive.

    welcome to the forum
    1) What Hard drive - size & make
    2) How connected - By itself as Master or slave.
    3) What other ide devices.
it's a lot easier when u post some specs & we can quit the guessing games.

  • XP64bit installation halts, K8N Neo4 Platinum - No SATA drives found?

    My setup:
    Athlon 64 3500+
    K8N Neo4 Platinum
    2GB OCZ 3200 Premier
    2) WD Sata 80GB HD's (for RAID 0)
    Nvidia 6800GT Extreme VGA
I was recently lucky enough to get my hands on a real Windows XP Pro64bit Extended Edition. I gathered quite a few 64bit drivers which claim to do the job (so they say.)
However I ran into a very strange issue during installation.
My main concern was getting RAID drivers to utilize after pressing F6 during the Windows install. Unfortunately I could not find Nvidia drivers so I went with the Silicon Image Sil3114 64bit drivers I got from their website. Copied them to a disk and thought I was ready to rock N roll. I have updated all BIOS to latest versions as of the date of this post.
Now I went into the RAID BIOS and setup my RAID 0 Array and both SATA drives are shown. All went well in this dept.
I began my installtion of XP64 and pressed F6 to install the RAID drivers. Popped the floppy in and the driver files were copied successfully.
I continued on to the point where you are prompted to setup Windows XP and it searches for any previous installs.
I continue to where I should get the dislmaimer and to press F8, however the install halts and say no hard drives were found. Setup cannot continue.
Any ideas as to why my drives are not being detected during installation? They show up fine under the RAID setup BIOS.
Any info or thoughts is truly appreciated.

You need to make your own floppy for the nvidia 64 ide drivers.
How to install Windows on SATA using F6 to load Drivers
Follow item 1 Obviously usinfg the Neo4 64bit unified driver pack Windows XP Professional x64 Edition

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum, how to move MBR to sata (make it drive #1)?

I am not sure I am phrasing the question correctly, so bear with me. I have a K8N Neo4 platinum with the SiI3114 controller and sata ports 4-8 (I believe its what they are calling PCB 1.x) with bios v1.D. I moved the board to another box and installed winXP on it. I was running it with IDE hard drives. Everything was working great but the OS was running really slow so I bought a SATA 300 mb/s drive and pluged it into SATA1 (I read about using ports 3 and 4 for raid but I do not want to use the NVraid at all, it is disabled). Then I proceeded to reinstall win XP. In the setup, I deleted the original C partiton and created one on the sata drive and rebooted so that there would be no "C" drive confusion by the winxp setup (have had that problem before and this keeps it from happening). Went through the setup and the sata was correctly reported as "C". Told windows to install itself there but it told me that it needed to write to MBR on the old c drive but that, since I had deleted the partiton, it couldn't and had to format it. So I knew that something was wrong.
So I rebooted and disabled the ide bus that contained the old IDE drive and just left the CD ide bus enabled. WinXP installed fine with no complaints. Then it rebooted and I re-enabled the ide bus in the bios. It wouldn't boot into the partiton I just installed winxp on! To get it to boot, I had to use F11 (the bios boot menu) and select the sata drive. Went through the whole setup winXP thing and rebooted. Same problem, it wouldn't boot the sata drive. :(
As long as that ide bus with the old ide drive is enabled, it won't boot the sata drive! I have rearranged the boot order on the bios every way possible. I opened up the box and moved that ide chain with the old ide drive to the ide2 port and put the dvd drive on ide1. I made the old drive slave and the prior slave master. That didn't fix it either. How do I tell this motherboard that the 1st drive is the sata drive? How do I tell it the MBR should be there not on the old ide drive? How do I fix this? Thanks!

Thank you for your replies! Hans, thank you I will give it a go again doing full formats all the way. I usually use the full format when installing winXP but I did things in a different order than you instructed so I will definately try it.
Aicjofs, thank you, There are 3 hard drives in this system currently. There is the ide hard drive that used to be the "c" drive (a western digital 160gb ata133 7200rpm 8mb cache) and a second ide hard drive that is an extended partition with 1 logical drive with data on it (western digital 300gb ata133 7200rpm 8mb cache). Then there is a sata hard drive in sata1 port with 2 partitions one primary and one extended. The extended partion does have data on it as I moved stuff there after I got winXP up the 2nd time (western digital 250gb sata II 7200rpm 16mg cache).  Right now, I have the ide drive with data on it as ide2 master and the old "c" drive as ide2 slave and it is unformatted and contains no partion information (I deleted the partition  after I installed the SATA drive and installed winXP). XP won't boot. What happens is that, if I take the winxp cd out, it gives me a "no system" error. If I leave the WinXP cd in it boots that disk. However, if I use "f11" and choose to boot the sata drive, winxp comes up just fine. If I disable the ide bus with the two ide hard drives, it boots winxp just fine.
Edit: bios is v1.D. It feels like this mobo is telling windows setup that the master ide drive is the first disk and to ignore everything else. It feels like if I can just tell the mobo that the sata drive is the first disk then everything will work . It is late night where I am now, and I've been fighting with this since the afternoon so I might have to goto sleep but I will be back at it tomorrow and will go though what Hans instructed. If anyone has any otehr ideas, I'd really appreciate that as well.

  • Firewire/1394 devices are not auto-detected with k8n neo4 platinum

I am unable to detect firewire/1394 devices to my PC through my K8N Neo4 Platinum. That is, I plug in the device through the firewire port and windows doesn't detect that a device has been plugged in.
    I have tried:
-2 firewire devices, both are Canon digital camcorders (ZR10 and ZR25MC)
    -2 different firewire cables
-reinstalling windows, got all windows updates except
(Microsoft Base Smart Card Cryptographic Service Provider Package: x86 (KB909520))
    -patch from microsoft, discussed here
    (https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=81749.0)
-both firewire devices using both cables connect just fine to a test computer
-both my computer and the test computer have Windows XP Pro SP2
Windows doesn't make the noise "bah-dum" that it has detected a device, nor does it display the dialog that gives me options of what programs to use. Once in a while, if I leave it connected for a while and come back, windows will eventually find it...or windows might bog down and get really slow. It speeds up again instantly once I unplug the firewire device. Strange, I know. Also there are NO conflicts in device manager.
    Could it be?:
    -bios misconfiguration
-need to use an older chipset driver (i am using most recent from nvidia.com)
-onboard audio or front audio needs to be disabled
-the k8n neo4 platinum simply has connection problems with some firewire devices
    (i hope not)
    Bob

    Built2Last: (good questions!)
I tried your suggestion by removing PCI cards and made FURTHER progress. I found out that my firewire card, the Syba NEC1394-P3, has some compatibility issues with my other PCI cards. I found this out because:
    1. it worked fine after I placed it in a non-comm (orange) slot and removed my soundcard (X-Fi) and Belkin wireless modem, and
    2. a tech support representative from Syba told me that that particular firewire card has compatibility issues
    Quote
Also, SD-NEC-4F is our older model firewire card.
Our new firewire card (SD-PCI-4F) is using VIA VT6306 chipset and no customer complain about any installation issue so far.
If the SD-NEC-4F still giving you trouble, I'll suggest you to return it and exchange for the SD-PCI-4F firewire card.
At least he is honest and wants to help, so I remain impartial towards Syba.
So I figured out the firewire card, but not the onboard firewire. Ok, but check this out! When the Syba card was working, I could plug in BOTH the external hard drive AND either of the Canon camcorders to the Syba firewire card. Windows all three devices just fine. Again, the onboard firewire would ONLY detect JUST the external hard drive, but would not detect either of the Canon camcorders. It seems as though the ball again is knocked back into MSI's court on this issue. Any ideas?
    syar2003:
As for drivers, I checked for drivers for: onboard firewire, add-in firewire card, and Canon camcorders.
-I cannot find where there is an MSI firewire driver for my onboard firewire port. I originally guess that it was part of my chipset driver installer, but the README doesn't say anything about it. It is also not an additional download on MSI's website. But since it detects an external hard drive I figure I must already have it.
-The add-in firewire card does not have drivers. I repeat, they do not exist. The manual and Syba's website both state that drivers for the card are included all versions of Windows back to Windows 98.
-Canon's website has a driver/software download page but it also appears that drivers do not exist for the Canon camcorders.
Yes the camcorder is set to VCR mode.
Yes the IEEE1394 is correctly installed, since external hard drive connects okay.
I tried two DV cables and both are connected fine.
The camcorders do not support USB as far as I can see, and if they do, I'm not using it.

  • Largest SATA drive for K8N Neo4 Platinum

I have a system based on the K8N Neo4 Platinum board, I'm planning to up, the storage capacity of my rig and was wondering if I can install a 500 GB or larger SATA or SATA II drive on it?
to make long story short I would like to know whats the largest Hard Drive (either IDE or SATA) one can install on a system with this board without problems or compatibility issues.
I presently have a Maxtor Diamond Plus 80GB SATA drive,
    Any takers??? ???

I see no problems, just try it.
As for a Sata-II drive, don't take Maxtor, any other drive should be fine.
However, you maybe must jumper it to SATA-1, depends on the onboard controller.

  • New K8N Neo4 Platinum build. Help, Nforce4 driver question?

I am building a new K8N Neo4 Platinum system (see my sig).  I wanted to get the latest Nforce4 drivers, before installing XP.  I noticed on the Nvidia website a 5.10 Unified Driver download and a 6.66 AMD download.  Which should I use?  It looks like the versions in the 5.10 Unified Driver are actually older than what is in the Nforce4 drivers, from the MSI site.  If I use the 6.66 AMD drivers, should I make a SATA Raid Driver floppy, from them, to use during the XP install?  Any advice is appreciated.

just do it from a floppy, LiveUpdate is crap
and yes you HAVE to F6  these drivers on Windows install  if you plan on using SATA or you cannot boot from SATA
unfied drivers are NOT FOR NFORCE 4.  You MUST use the NF4-specific 6.66 (or earlier)
Unified Drivers are specific only to nForce 1/2/3.  AMD and Intel each have specific and unique driver sets for nForce4.
download 6.66, extract and explore the folder
go to IDE->Win2K->SATARAID and copy everything in this folder to a floppy
make two floppies just to be safe
you cannot use CD, you MUST use floppy because Windows will look in a: only
as soon as Windows install starts you will see a screen that says "Press F6 to install third party SCSI or RAID driver"... hit F6 and insert floppy and after a few minutes, you will get a screen that says"
"Press S to install other drivers..."
    press S
next screen comes up, first select and install "nVidida Raid class driver (required)" -->hit enter
back to "Press S to install other drivers..." screen
    press S again
screen wil come up again, this time choose and install ""nVidia nforce storage controller(required)"
one more time back to "press S to instal other drivers...", this time just hit ENTER
    now you're good to go

  • HELP! Installation of SATA HD on K8N NEO4 PLATINUM

I finally put together my system
    AMD Athlon 64 3200+ venice
    MSI K8N NEO4 Platinum
    1 GB DDR400 RAM
    Etc....
now my problem has to do with the SATA hard drive i bought for it, a maxtor diamondmax10 6L080MO, my system will boot and say "invalid drive" and will tell me to go into the RAID Tool.
I really dont know much about sata interface setup so i would appreciate a step by step walkthru on it, right know im forced to use my old reliable maxtor 20gb,
is it possible to have both the 20gb ata hd and the new 80gb sata drives? how do i install my sata drive?
i was planning on using the small one for software installation and the big sata one for storage
everything on my system is running well so far, except for the SATA drive problem,
    PLEASE HELP!

    Ceckardt,
You should not need to install any special drives with single SATA that not in a RIAD Array, if you have Windows XP SP2 installed, if you do not have SP2 installed, upgraded to it before doing anything I instruct you to do below.
If you using just SATA hard drive, all you should have to do is plug it in to one of the nVidia SATA connectors on the motherboard and if you have Windows up and running on the old 20GB Maxtor.  Start windows and open the Disk Management Window.  You get there by right clicking My Computer, menu will pop-up and left click “Manage” a Window will open and on the list on the left side of the call Computer Management, left click “Disk Management”.  On the right of the Window you should see all of you drive of you system including you new 80GB SATA drive.  You will have to Partition and format it, then it will show in My Computer as logical drive, the drive letter you will have assigned in the Disk Management.
If you need instructions, other the Windows Help to partition and format your drive under the disk manager, just reply or if the drive is list in the disk manage window and you cannot figure out how to partition and format the just start a new post asking for help using the Disk Manager.
If the drive is not listed in the Disk management Window, reply in the post for more help.
    Good luck,
    Roger

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum not booting

Hi I just moved my fully working K8N Neo4 Platinum based setup from one case to another, and now it's not booting. All fans are starting but the USB D-bracket 2 shows LED's 1 and 4 yellow and 2 and 3 red and the computer hangs. I can't seem to find this LED combination in the manual where it's only supposed to show green and red lights. Anyone got any idea of what's wrong?
    Thanks

Okay I'll try to be more specific, the thing that makes me clueless is that the rig has been working flawlessly before.
    CPU/Memory:
    AMD Athlon64 Venice 90nm 3500+ 2.2GHz
2x512 MB OCZ DDR PC-4000 Gold VX (500 Mhz, 2-2-2-8)
I've tried unmounting every single component and mounting it back on again. I've tried both memory sticks in a single slot but no luck.
The PSU it's been running on is an Antec True380SP 380W (included in Antec Sonata case), yes 380W is a bit low so i tried a beefier PSU as well (Antec True430P 430W) with the same result.
    Max Amperage:
    Antec True430P 430W -- +3.3V = 28A, +5V = 36A, +12V = 20A
    Antec True380SP 380W -- +3.3V = 28A, +5V = 35A, +12V = 24A
    HDD:
    Western Digital Raptor WD740ADFD 74Gb 10000rpm 16Mb cache SATA connected to SATA1
All fans power up, Power LED lights up and HDD powers up, but no VGA signal. I've reset CMOS and I've read through the stickies and tried the fixes there applicable to my problems, but no luck so far. Only thing I can think of that haven't tried is switching the CMOS battery.

  • Memory Controller not available - K8N NEO4 Platinum Ultra

    Hi Experts!
I have typical problem in my PC.  I need reply only from experts.  Newbies please excuse.
My system displays the following info in POST.
VENDOR / DEVICE     CLASS      DESCRIPTION         IRQ
    ===================================
    10DE        005E        0580       Memory Controller     NA
If anyone can correctly PIN POINTEDLY identify why this is displayed, it will be much helpful
As such I face no difficulty with my system.  But this message very much annoys me.
    Thanks.
    My PSU Details:
400W.  +12V 20Ampere.  (This is the maximum I could afford in our indian PC environment.)
    AMD 3000+ Winchester 90nm. CPU.
K8N NEO4 Platinum Ultra Mother Board.
    512 MB Hynix PC3200 Memory.  (2*256)
    80GB Western Digital.
    Ordinary PCI VGA 2mb card.
    Samsung CDROM.

There is no driver for memory controller with A64 (nforce3/4) as stated earlier .
You see this in the memctrl.inf for UDP 5.10 , driver pack for nforce 3 and backwards down to nforce 1 .
Memctrl is only added to the 5.10 package for backward support to nf2 and lower as this is a unified driver package and
the memory controller is at chipset level on the motherboard that resides in the external northbridge on nf2 chipsets and lower .
What you see is just a vendor/machine id description and is just as it should be .
