SATA DVD RW should I be able to boot from this?

I am having problems installing WinXP. I have a SATA DVD Rom, should I be able to boot from the WinXP CD to load Windows from this or do I need to use an IDE Rom?
Phil...
I'll get there in the end

Oh, sorry that I didn't write a full name. It's MSI K8T Neo-FSR.
I'm not sure if it's too old, because the drive works with no problems in Windows and even during booting up I can see a text from RAID agent (or something like this, I'm not sure if it's a proper name) that my device is installed. The only thing, which doesn't work is fact that I can't choose it in Boot Sequence :(
Does anyone have some ideas?
I received an answer from MSI Online Customer Service. They suggested me to flash my bios with a version 2.34. Well, it seems to me a little bit suspicious as it is only available via ftp (on a website I haven't found this version). What's more, I am just afraid of destroying my motherboard. Flashing bios is always quite dangerous task. As I believe, you would recommend me doing this with The MSI HQ Forum Flasher?

  • Should I be able to boot from external firewire disk?

Yesterday, to prepare for upgrading to Leopard, I copied across my hard drive contents onto an external Firewire drive, by using drag & drop, folder by folder.
I was hoping that this would let me (after a reboot) select the external drive as my Startup Disk in System Prefs, or allow me to choose it if I rebooted holding down the alt key. However the external drive doesn't show up in either case.
Is there something else I need to do to allow booting via external Firewire? Is that even possible on my PB 1.5GHz (OSX 10.3.9)? Thanks.

Close, but no cigar! Copying by drag n drop misses invisible files necessary for a boot volume. The way to do this is to use one of the cloning programs like SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner to copy everything needed to make the FW drive bootable. You can even specify to NOT copy all your files if you wish.
I go to Versiontracker.com to get these programs.

I'm making a DVD for our class reunion.  A fellow classmate has some video on a mini cassette that he said he could put on a dvd.  Will I be able to import from that dvd to imovie to use in my dvd?  Or does it have to be in another format, maybe flash drive?

Ask your friend to supply you the DVD as a data DVD using either DV or AIC as the video format, burning the DVD as a DVD for a DVD player will degrade the video quality.

  • I want to install Yosemite onto an external hard drive, and keep Snow Leopard installed on the internal hard drive. I want to be able to boot from either system, depending upon circumstance (at least until Yosemite is stable). Is this possible?

iMac, Model Identifier iMac12,1 with 121.5" screen, 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 processor, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory, 1 TB internal hard drive, running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 from internal drive.
I want to install Yosemite onto a 1 TB external hard drive (OWC) , and keep Snow Leopard installed on the internal hard drive. I want to be able to boot from either system, depending upon circumstance (at least until Yosemite is stable). Is this possible?

It is possible. I'll let you read some articles that cover the setup:
Starting from an external USB storage device (Intel-based Macs) - Apple Support
    or

  • If I create an external drive with Yosemite that I can boot from, will I also be able to boot from my internal drive still?

So I am still on Mountain Lion and I haven't upgraded because I have always been worried that Logic Pro, my Plug ins, and my Hardware wouldn't work right on the new OSX. I am now becoming interested in upgrading since Logic has a new update that I cant use.
My plan is to install Yosemite on an external drive that has thunderbolt connection so that I can boot from that and give everything a trial run. Is this something that actually works? If I do this, and things arent compatible on Yosemite, will I be able to boot from my internal and be back on Mountain Lion as I am now?
    Thanks!

External drive must be partitioned and formatted for Mac OS Extended, Journaled.
Clone Yosemite, Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
         1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
             button.
         2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
         3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
         4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
             to the Destination entry field.
         5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
             the Source entry field.
         6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external drive. Source means the internal startup drive.

  • Would I be able to boot from USB on my Macbook Pro if my logic board was damaged?

My macbook pro recently started to slow down, programs freeze, etc. Odd behavior. So I decided to install a clean version of os. My hard drive came up as corrupt, I need to repair. So I did that. And was unable to install to os. It starts up and then says that the installation has failed, but yet I'm able to install it on an external hd and boot from that installation. Is it my hard drive? Or is something wrong my logic board?

If you can successfully boot and run OSX from the external harddisk but not from the internal harddisk, then it is most likely that your internal harddisk is defect and not the logic board.
Nonetheless you should run the Apple Hardware Test Intel-based Macs: Using Apple Hardware Test to check your Mac.
It might be that the internal SATA-harddisk connection is defect.

  • Would like to be able to boot from my iPod

I have a 2nd generation FireWire iPod that I can boot from and love being able to do that to run disk utilities now and then. Just bought a new 30GB iPod with video and apparently I cannot install a system to boot up from it. I understand there is a cable you can get that goes from the USB to FireWire. Would that work to allow me to install a system on my new USB iPod and let me boot up from it? I would just keep my old iPod for booting up, but my husband wants to use it for music and expects me to erase it and fill it up with his music.

not only that, but Apple specifically recommends against booting from your iPod in a technote. You can put system files on there, but don't boot from it.

  • Is anybody able to see from this why spotlight in mail went bad?

Here's before an after doing a full reindex of / using mdutil
I tried to use mdimport -f but it just didn't have the same affect
    You can see the differences...
So the first one looks to be generic to the file whereas the second one includes all the metadata from the importer so can I assume that somehow it just lost the original information? ie. i would should have been indexed a long time ago.

    Hi Gopikishan,
From your description, when Approver2 click Open this task in Outlook, no Approve button displayed on the form. If I misunderstood, please point it out.
I created a simple approval workflow in SharePoint Designer and assigned it to Admin and user1, choosing serial (one at a time). As I could see in the workflow setting page, there is only one form in Forms block. And I opened it in my InfoPath form, it displayed
as I clicked Open this task in Outlook.
So I’d recommend you check if there is more than one form in workflow setting page. And also check if there is any rule which will affect on whether Approval button shows or not.

  • *** DVD-RW & CDRW Device drivers "missing" when booting from Cd's

    Hi
I am using the MSI 875P Neo FIS2R Mobo and I have been having a problem with booting from CD's.
When I use the WinXP CD and various other bootable CD's, I don't have any problems at all, but when I insert a Maxtor "PowerMAX" or MaxBlast bootable CD, I get the following messages:
** ERROR:  No CD-ROM DRive found, please check power cables
** ERROR:  IDE CD-ROM Device Driver NOT installed
As you can see from my signature, my drives are the LG CDRW and LG DVDRW drives.
When I insert the same CD's into another computer with an ELITE AMD mobo, my drives and device drivers are found and they work just fine.
I have re-installed both computers and then, installed all of my drivers and programs and then updated from Windows Update, but when I try and use the Maxtor bootable CD's in my 875P, I am told that no drives or device drivers were found but if I swap them to the ELITE computer and boot from the CD's, my LG CDRW & DVDRW drives and device drivers are found and the CD's work perfectly.
Can anyone help resolve this problem on my MSI 875P Neo FIS2R?
    Regards
    Brave01Heart

    Hi Maesus
Thanks for the response and I'll certainly give your suggestion a try.
I'm sure it's set to "Native" but what difference does it make if it's set to "Legacy"?

  • No able to boot from CD-ROM - ProBook 4530s

    Hello ,
    I have a ProBook 4530s (A7K05UT # ABA) computer which i want to format
when entering the BIOS configuration i dont have the CD-ROM option.
there is a "USB CD-ROM" option, USB Flppy but no "CD-ROM" alon
Choosing "USB CD-ROM" is not working and the disk is not uploaded
Do you know how can i fix this boot problem?

    Hi,
There are Two options to try and reinstall Windows - the 2nd is the easiest, but you may want to try the 1st to see if it will save you having to order a replacement set of discs - make sure to back-up any important files first.
    1.  If you can still boot in to Windows, hold down the Windows Key and press R.  Into the Run Box type compmgmt.msc and hit enter.  Click Disk Management in the left pane and when the partitions have loaded, right click the Recovery Partition and mark it as 'Active'.  Close all open windows and then restart - if this has worked, the notebook will boot from the Recovery Partition upon restart.
    2.  You can order a replacement set of Recovery Discs using the link below.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00810334&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en
If you have any problem with this link, order them directly from HP.
If you live in the US, contact HP Here.
If you are in another part of the world, start Here.

  • Can't Boot from bootable CD/DVD or USB.

I'm trying to install a new OS from a bootable DVD that I created. However, my T530 will not boot up from the DVD. I checked the boot order in the BIOS settings, and even explicitly tried to force to boot from my DVDROM usint the F12 boot menu. I've been able to boot from this DVD on my other computer.
Any way to diagnose whether my DVDROM is faulty, or is there perhaps some BIOS setting to fix this? I am able to read the disc from Windows, just can't boot from it. The laptop is brand new, just opened it up today, so I don't know why something as simple as this wouldn't just work.
    Solved!

Next, I copied the ISO image to a USB stick and tried to boot from that instead. But it hung. I was able to boot from the same USB stick on another laptop.
All the signs seems to suggest the laptop is simply defective, which is extremely disappointing considering it is brand new and I waited for about a month to receive it.  Is there anything else I can/should try (some diagnostic utility, perhaps?), or do I just send it in for a replacement?
Is you used the tool at http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msstore/html/pbPage.Help_Win7_usbdvd_dwnTool to take the .ISO file and create the USB stick, I'd say you are right and have an issue with the system.
Did the system ship with Windows 8 and is safe boot turned on?
Yes, it is Windows 8 with Secure Boot on by default. I tried it both with it enabled and disabled, and it didn't work either way.

  • User should not be able to import a request.

    Dear Forum,
We have a role created with all the transaction (*) given to a user.
We want to revoke/restrict the authorization to import a request.  User be able to create/edit/release the request but should not be able to import.  This should happen without changing to existing (*) but at the same time user should not able to import.

    > And in the new role you can restrict the user.
I suspect the how was the original question. S_TRANSPRT is the (already given) answer. Deriving will do nothing for that object as not one of its fields is organizational. Besides that, restricting some more objects to make sure the user cannot create and/or use any workarounds is essential to make this work properly.
The additional request This should happen without changing to existing (*) scares me a bit. Why do these users need over 70000 transactions?

  • Should Tiger (10.4.7) be able to boot an ext. drive with Panther (10.3.9)?

New iMac 20" won't boot 10.3.9 volume from either of two external drives.
Maybe it is the fact that the volumes on my external drive are 10.3.9 and the iMac is 10.4.7?? This ext. drive house the drive from my dead G5 which I have been booting from thru my old G3 (also running 10.3.9), to use my current data and programs from the G5. I thought I'd be able to boot from it on the iMac.
Option/power up, only shows the iMac's HD as an option to boot from.

:o( I had just read the KB article you linked to, then came back here. Unfotunately, I had a G5 that shipped with 10.3.2, that did not come with Setup Assistant. It is now updated to 10.3.9, but that is no help (I don't think).
Other variables are that the G5 is dead. I am running it's OS from an external drive thru my old PowerBook G3 (also running 10.3.9). The article says be sure your old computer's firmware is up to date.
My Powerbook matches the link for current firmware ver. 4.1.8. I don't know if the G5 OS's firmware ver. (running from the ext. drive thru Powerbook) matters, but it appears to be one version old at v. 5.1.4, when current seems to be 5.1.5f2. (I doubt this can be updated because there is no more G5 machine!)
So can I still use Target Disk Mode which I used for PowerBook to G5 long ago. If so, I hope I can selectively move only the parts I want. The G5 was purchased used and had ton's of eroneous stuff on it.
I know I can do this (repeat)...

  • Can't boot from DVD or external drive

Because of recent slow performance on my iMac G5 I ran disk utility and repaired permissions, then clicked Verify Disk. It reported minor errors in directory files and said I should repair them. I tried starting up from the MacOS X installation DVD, but I get a spinning beach ball and a symbol with a circle with a diagonal line through it (like a Do Not Enter sign). I had to unplug the computer to reboot.
Using another computer, I made a startup disk on an external hard drive and tried booting the iMac from that, but I get the same beach ball and symbol. Tried another OS X DVD with the same result.
I am able to boot from the internal hard drive only, but then I can't do a disk repair. I have already reset the PRAM, but that didn't help.
    Any suggestions ??? Thanks.

Can I create a new startup disk by copying my installation disk, leaving off the installation software, and then start my Mac using Option "C".
On my previous Macs I always used Norton Utilities to repair my disk and recover files - are ther any similar packages available for OS X (10.4.7)?
