SATA hd coming up as removable disk

hey i recently installed a Seagate SATA 120gb HD, formatted and installed windows xp. and i'm getting the removable disk icon coming up in the taskbar. the sata drive is the only hard drive on the system. is there anyway to prevent the sata drive from showing up as a removable drive???
thanks

This is normal.  I think you can hide the icon in winxp in one of the settings menus.

  • Is anybody using RDX Removable Disk Backup System

I´m sorry, this a new post about an old discussion but I would like to start a fresh dialogue for today; 2011.
Is anybody using RDX Removable Disk Backup System (with or without T.Machine).
An affordable alternative to LTO tape? Proved compatibility with Mac OS?
Is it possible to insert a RDX drive as a second optic unit inside a Mac Pro?
Any happy RDX+mac user, so far?
    Thanks.

I'm not using RDX on a Mac, but I do have one client I'm using RDX for a Windows server.  While RDX is somewhat cost effective over LTO/Ultrium, IMHO it probably wouldnt' be the best for Time Machine.  Time Machine expects the previous backup to be online and if you switch cartridges, TM would have to create a new backup from scratch.  Then if you switch back the cartridges, your TM bundles are out of sync.  I'm not saying it's not possible, but that this is not the "normal" way TM works.  So you need to understand what you need to do if you were planning to switch cartridges.  (If you weren't planning to switch cartridges, then a "normal" external or internal hard drive is more cost effective than RDX.)
RDX cartridges are basically 2.5" SATA hard drives.  The RDX "drive" is, for the most part, just a SATA to USB converter.  (Or SATA to eSATA or whatever interface you get.)  On the PC the advantage is that you don't have to "safely remove hardware" and you don't lose the drive letter.  On the Mac, a "normal" external hard drive is almost as convinient as RDX, since there's no drive letter to worry about.  The RDX's advantage on the Mac would be not having to plug/unplug a USB cable on the external units.  I suppose you could get an internal eSATA RDX to put into a Mac.  I don't know of anyone doing that.
I did use my client's USB RDX drive on his Macbook, just to see what we could do with it.  While it worked, we didn't do extensive testing so I can't comment on long term satisfaction with OSX.  But so far it's been reliable with Windows for almost two years.  (Windows Server 2008 with Backup Exec 2010.)  However since RDX is basically just a hard drive, I've gotten the client to realize that in a year or two, we'll probably have to start replacing cartridges, assuming his data size doesn't grow beyond the RDX capacity.  This is based on the assumption that the RDX cartridges would have similar longevity to laptop hard drives, which have 3-5 year warranties.  We probably will get more lifespan than that, but better to have the client plan in the budget now, rather than have backups fail.

  • Ipod 160GB showing in Windows Vista OS as Removable Disk, not appearing in iTunes (latest version). How can I resolve?, Ipod 160GB showing in Windows Vista OS as Removable Disk, not appearing in iTunes (latest version). How can I resolve?

My Ipod 160GB when disconnected is showing without any files, but no room available. It appears in my 'Computer' screen as 'Removable Disk (though the icon is a little iPod). It does not show up in iTunes at all (I have the latest version).
When I right-click the icon on the 'Computer' screen it does run incredibly slowly. I was doing this to consider if I should try formatting it (only NTSF and exFAT formats were showing) but I wasn't certain if that would be a good idea.
    I have thus far:
    Hard Reset iPod
Verified the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver was installed correctly via Device Manager
Checked the device in 'Computer Management' > 'Disk Management - showing as a RAW file with only format option as exFAT or NTSF
Ran iPod in Diagnostic Boot Mode - IO > HardDrive > HDSMARTData* - stats revealed 'Error' (did this twice to confirm error). Reset iPod from here.
After this it actually came up in iTunes but said it needed to be restored - ran Restore iPod. Error message said 'iPod cannot be restored. Uknown error occoured (1415).
Tried Solution 1 (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1539) - Reregistering the .dll files. Was unable to complete step 11 as the iPod did not appear in iTunes.
Verified that Apple Mobile Device Manager was installed.
Restarted the Apple Mobile Device Service.
Checked for third party conflicts - couldn't find any.
Changed the drive letter and restarted the computer.
Put into disk mode - unsure what that achieves.
Downloaded the HP USB with no luck running the program. I believe that Windows Vista doesn't allow formatting drives to FAT32 at all, and even previous editions of Windows wouldn't allow formatting above 32GB so certainly no suitable for me. If I got hold of a mac computer - could I format on that? Or is there a FAT32 Formatter that works for 160GB?
So I am at a bit of a frustrated loss. If you have any suggestions or know what I should do - I am all ears or eyes as it were. I will be on standby to give you more information if required.
    Thanks,
    Ashley

Try Resetting Your iPod while it's connected to the computer.
Hold down the Menu and Select buttons until you see the Apple logo (or Menu & Play/Pause in older models).
This will often get it recognized. It may take several attempts.
Also see these (if you haven't found them already):
Your Windows PC doesn't recognize iPod
iPod does not appear in iTunes or on the desktop
iPod appears in Windows Explorer but does not appear in iTunes

The message means that your internal hard has been damaged. This message always comes up when the file system is corrupted. I suggest to remove it, connect the hard drive into a different computer as an external drive (use usb caddy), perform a backup if possible and the format the hard drive and restore the factory settings. I'm afraid that you have to reformat the hard drive, a checkdisk scan won't help..
The error message means that the Boot Sector is corrupt or has been damaged. It does not mean that the hard disk is damaged.
This is a fixable issue. There are a few command line tools that can be used.
You will  need to make an appropriate version (32-bit / 64-bit) of the Windows 7 repair disc from a working Windows 7 installation. You will need either a USB or CD to create your rapair CD/USB. Follow the instructions on this video to create the repair installation of your choice..You will will be using the manual boot sector repair that is described in this video to repair your Windows 7 Boot sector.  Use the Windows 7 repair disc or repair USB thumb drive that you created earlier to accomplish the repair.

  • IPod nano being read by Windows as "Removable Disk"

I have a 4gb nano, current firmware 1.1.1. Now, I've updated it before to the music on iTunes (back when it was on 1.0), but then one day, the iPod suddenly showed the exclamation/folder icon. So I restored the iPod with firmware 1.1 (it recommended I update, so I did), but my computer couldn't recognize the iPod. It kept showing a little baloon (I'm using XP) saying that the device could not be written to (only when I unplugged it, however). So, I thought that maybe it was just trying to write to it very slowly, but after leaving it there for a day, supposedly "writing" to the iPod, there were no results. I updated to 1.1.1, thinking that maybe 1.1 had a bug that caused this, but then I was confronted with the problem of nothing recognizing it at all. Windows now shows the iPod as a "Removable Disk", and when I double click it, it shows the loading mouse for about a minute; until it says
    "E:\ is not accessible.
The Files or directory is corrupted and unreadable."
NOTE: I have NEVER used any third party software like linux or "hacked" my iPod.
So, after looking around, I followed the method here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716
Because I could see the device in My Computer but couldn't open it, and iTunes didn't recognize it.
However, it was not a success, so I tried the method here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301343
But that also didn't work. I am now at a loss for explanation, can anyone help me? This is my mother's iPod, and she's leaving on a business trip in two days; I'd like to get her music back on it so she can use the iPod on the plane. Any ideas?

It wasn't being recognized by anything... including the updater. But after searching through other threads, I found that other people have had this problem as well; it seems the firmware is the prime target for the scre-up. Thanks, Benoa, for the steps! Although you've probably heard it enough times already.

I-pod has been reformatted and now shows up in windows as a removable disk drive can not get updater to recognize. any help?

Wow...I never thought there would ever be such a screwy problem like this on such a large scale....has anyone noticed how many similar posts have been posted in the last week or so? Not saying this never happens to anyone--in fact, it's happened to me beofre, but it was simple to fix...but the same problem happening with so many people at about the same time*...I don't know, it's kind of strange...anyway....
Yeah, I'm a Mac/Apple guy to the core, and have been since 7th grade (about 11-12 years now). Yet, I can't help but look at my iPod as if it has self-destructed. I was listening to it (w/ tape adapter, of course) on the way home in the car, then unplugged it for literally five minutes, got into my apartment, plugged it in my dell Latitude, and poof it had been reformatted. So, the moment I plugged it in, its funcionality basically vanished. The 5 R's have been useless thus far, and I can't even reformat using Explorer, because Windows tells me that the 1 GB iPod now has no storage capacity. ***? Strange, strange. Anyhow, sorry for the rambling, but this really confounds and frustrates me. APPLE....HELP US PLEASE!
*Don't get me wrong: I'm not a conspiracy nut; it's just hard to wrap my mind around this right now.

  • IPod not showing up in Windows or iTunes? Showing up as removable disk :F ?

I have a 5th generation iPod Nano and I have had it for about a year. I tried plugging the iPod into my computer (Windows), but my computer and iTunes do not recognize it. The first few seconds when I do plug in my iPod, I go to My Computer and I see my iPod with my name beside it, but after about 2 seconds, it changes to Removable Disk :F and then it disappears completely after another second. Last night, when I upgraded my iTunes version, the iPod connected fine, but today, my iPod has not been recognized at all. Help please?

I upgraded to Mountain Lion and now I'm having trouble with Time Machine. It appears that since the upgrade Time Machine is not recognizing the external hard drive. When I go to Time Machine and select Disk for the current HD I am left with one of two options: "cancel" or "remove Disk." I am worried that I will loss my backups.

    Is this a usb drive?
It will probably never recognise that drive ever again.. Mountain Lion has this little bug where it cannot recognise some USB drives.. I don't understand it.. but it just happened to me and a quick google shows it is not uncommon.
Your backups are not lost.. they are just not accessible.. you need to plug the drive into a computer with a better.. older OS. Find a new USB drive that Mountain Lion can actually read.. and even write to.. and copy the files across.

  • Ipod shown as "Removable Disk" in MyComputers among other problems. *HELP*

I've had my iPod for quite a while now, dating back to June of 2005. Just lately I have not been able to connect my iPod to iTunes. When I checked under "My Computer" it appeard in the F Drive as well as being named "Removable Disk" as opposed to its given name. Finally, I was able to get iTunes to recognize the iPod and it asked me to restore it. I did and I was still unable to get it to work properly. It asked me to restore the iPod again, whiwh I again tried. This time, however, it stated:
"There was a problem downloading the iPod 'iPod.' The requested resource was not found."
When I open RealRhapsody to download music, the iPod no longer appears. When I try to select it on My Computer, it freezes up. I do not know what to do. Any help would be nice.

. when i plugged my ipod shuffle g1 in a few days ago itunes said the i had to restore my ipod. i did not want to but i had no choice cauz it already deleted my songs. after 5 trys it said "cant restore ipod"ipod". unknown error occurred (1418))(itunes did it by it self, i just put it in one very fateful afternoon. i spent 5 hrs on the computer and i still cant fix it) well i went to this web site to see if they could help me. i found something. it was a program for my ipod but by the time i downloaded it, it was too late. after a while plugging in my ipod "my computer" no longer reconized it as removable disk. a pop up comes up and says this device malfunctioned then my ipod disappears off the face of the earth. i would send it to the apple store but my warranty expired. bummer what should i do?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • When i try to open itunes i get insert a disk into removable disk f and when i look for that on my computer there is no disk f

when i try to open itunes i get the message insert a disk into removable disk f and when i look for disk f there is no f on my computer. I thought i might make a disk f that letter is not available in my device manager section. So i try and uninstall/install itunes it was error message wd is invailid character. I am in a pickle here.

To solve this issue all I did was check to ensure that the file permissions were set as described by the earlier posts, followed by simply deleting the iTunes Library Genius.itdb file.  Once the file was deleted I was able to open iTunes without difficulty.  Note that I am running Windows 8.  Hope this helps!

  • IPod Showing Up As Removable Disk Even When Disk Use is Disabled

    Hi there,
I'm having a problem with my iPod and Vista. My iPod is showing up as a removable disk even though I do not have "Enable Disk Use" checked. This is confirmed by the fact that I can disconnect my iPod without having to eject it first.
I've tried checking and unchecking the text box. It works the first time, but when I reconnect the iPod, the disk shows up again.
How can I permanently disable disk use?
Appreciate any help you can give.

Have you tried performing a RESTORE on the iPod when connected to iTunes?

A few days ago I updated my iPod G5 with itunes and everything was working perfectly and as it was finishing, it said something about not being able to update or something like that. Now, everytime I connect my iPod to my laptop, it just shows a "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the taskbar and when I look in "my computer", it shows my iPod as Removable Disk (E:). Does the iOS device connect to other networks? If yes that tend to indicate a problem with your network.
Does the iOS device see the network?
    Any error messages?
Do other devices now have this problem?
Did the iPod stay connected before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on your router
.- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
