SATA HDD question

Hi ppl
Quick question.
When I built my PC  I used a HDD with a normal P-ATA connection with the IDE cable.
I am building a PC for my friend and was wondering if I should get a SATA drive.
R they rly that much faster or is it just a gimick?
Also when u install one for the first time and boot up is the SATA drive automatically recognised like a  normal P-ATA drive.
Sorry new to this. Thanks for your help

Hey again
Umm alright I dont rly mind if I get either of the drive now. Just a quick question. When I built my rig I just attached the P-ATA HDD using a normal IDE cable and then when I booted I just installed windows xp via CD etc and it just detected my IDE HDD was there.
Now if I built the new PC with a SATA drive and I connect the SATA port and the power to the drive and boot up the PC. Will it automatically recognise the HDD and I can install windows normally or wot. Is there anything I would have to do differently for SATA compared the PATA
Cheers guys. Noob wen it comes to the SATA drives.

  • Mounting a second SATA HDD in the Pavillion 500-304nd

I have recently purchased the desktop mentioned in the subject line, along with a second 1TB SATA HDD to add to it. I did find the connections for a second drive but cannot find a place on the computer's frame to physically mount the drive. What's the secret here? Do I need an extra part to mount the HDD, and if so: where can I find one?
    This question was solved.

    Hi,
This HP posted document shows how to remove the existing hard drive but it doesn't show how to add a second hard drive since your PC is not provisioned for multiple hard drives.
Review this thread.  Look at message #9.  There are many different ways to modify a PC as such but the solution was not provided by HP. If you think that this solution would work for your then ask the poster where to obtain the needed parts.

  • Need to get a bootable external E-SATA HDD connected via E-SATA ExpressCard adaptor

We need to get a bootable external E-SATA HDD connected via E-SATA ExpressCard adaptor to this laptop however there are 2 main question before we purchase those hardware:
1 - will it be bootable at all?
2 - what speed is going to be provided by the ExpressCard slot on this laptop - is it comparable with E-SATA standard?
I'm purchasing the card here http://www.ebay.com/itm/add-2-eSATA-Hard-Disk-ports-for-Laptop-Notebook-PC-fits-34mm-Expresscard-slo...   but still can't understand is it compatible and what speed will I get on the slot of my laptop - taking into account your official specification:
    "    1 ExpressCard/54 Slot (also supports ExpressCard/34)"
Could you please advise us on the above?

wiki explains that "...The ExpressCard has a maximum throughput of 2.5 Gbit/s through PCI Express and 480 Mbit/s through USB 2.0 dedicated for each slot, while all CardBus devices connected to a computer share a total 1.06 Gbit/s bandwidth." - but:
how can I know whichever bus (PCIExpress or USB) is used in my laptop for this interface?

  • I need to replace my Apple HDD Toshiba MK5065GSXF Media, can I use any 2,5" internal SATA HDD for this?

    Hi guys,
I'm in a situation where my Apple HDD Toshiba MK5065GSXF Media has completely given up on me. I cannot understand why Toshiba is being used anyhow, together with SeaGate these were assured failures back when I did IT. My question however is: can I simply replace it with any 2,5" internal SATA HDD that I'd wish to use? I tend to favour any WD HDD. I'm running my MacBook Pro off an external HDD nowadays, but it's not a useful option as I'd like to use it at school and all that.
I'd really appreciate your answers and/or recommendations
    GJ

I really like the HGST Travelstar 7K1000 and it would be a good fit for a 2012 model: 7200rpm, 1TB capacity and SATA III speeds. I have a number of them that I use to clone my internal SSD and have put one inside my MacBook Pro just to see how it performs - top notch!
That's my recommendation - HGST is made by Hitachi and I've always had good luck with Hitachi drives.

  • Transferring a SATA HDD

I am long overdue to get my HD with the times. I've been leaning toward setting up a single SATA (seagate 160 gb ?).  Will I be able to, down the road, transfer the SATA HDD to a new computer without losing all the accumulated data if I use the Serial 1 port as my connection now?  Somewhere I read that if you want to be assured of being able to access your SATA HDD on a fututre PC then a SATA PCI card is the only way to go.  I'd rather not spend the money on the card if it's not needed now and is useless in the future. Any thoughts?

    Hi,
mrmom: The world of computing today is so fast moving that you are asking hypothetical questions!   As far as I know the near future seems to be SATA orientated - but as for a couple of years time - Who knows?
As for your second question - yes you will have to re-install Windows XP (usually) if you buy a new mobo - that's if we're still using XP then!
I certainly wouldn't buy the SATA PCI card yet as it's impossible to pr-empt what the future holds, maybe when you hear something concrete as to the future of SATA then you can start making plans.

  • Random Restarts! SATA HDD Makes a noise...going insane!

Well, for christmas (yay!) i recieved a gig of Corsair XMS memory and a new Western Digital 120 GB SATA HDD. So you know as soon as i had them in my hands, they went into the beast.
So i booted it up and everything went fine. I installed Win XP Pro. No Problems. wOOT!
So I go and install Call of Duty and it's installation went fine. Then I go in and play it. (after rebooting of course) and i hear the HDD click and slow down, then the system freezes.
I can replicate this problem with Planetside too.
So I tried another HDD, a slow 10gig 5400 rpm. Installed the basics and the game ran fine, ran through the entire tutorial level.
Sometimes, on the SATA HDD, i'll get an exception to Win32k.sys @ 0x0000008E
    If im lucky.
Well, im out of ideas and out of stamina, I have gone 3 sleepless nights trying to find out the problem and im out of ideas. I have posted on the WD forums and have emailed their support staff (but they suck.)
Any Help is GREATLY appriciated. As you can see, it runs fine normally, or i wouldnt be talking to you now.

    this is the problem
     Question
Error Message: "GENERAL PROTECTION FAULT" in Windows.
      Answer
      Problem:
"GENERAL PROTECTION FAULT" error message encountered in Windows. A blue screen appears with an error message stating that a GPF (General Protection Fault) error has occurred with the name of the program or file that caused the error.
    Cause:
A GPF is almost never a drive problem. A GPF typically occurs when two or more programs try to access the same region of memory within the system, or when a program attempts to write to a protected file.
    Resolution:
The best solution is to contact Microsoft Support with all the proper information regarding the error.
If you believe that the drive may be the cause of this problem, running the diagnostic feature on the Data Lifeguard Tools disk will determine its error status. If the drive fails, it should be replaced. If there are no errors, the drive is not the source of the problem. Further troubleshooting will be required within the operating system and applications. The Data Lifeguard Tools are available in our Download Library.

  • How should I setup a SATA HDD on K8N Neo2 Platinum?

I bought a 200Gb SATA hard disk (Maxtor 6V200E0). This is the first time I work with SATA HDDs.
I plugged the HDD as I always did with an IDE HDD, and installed Windows XP -I have configured nothing-. The problem I'm experiencing is that sometimes Windows XP boots fine, and sometimes it doesn't. After the POST, the Windows Logo does never appear. I do not see anything.
Reading the Manual, I believe to understand that no matter if you only have one SATA HDD, I should setup nVRAID in the BIOS. Is that correct?. If I configure the nVRAID in the BIOS and setup RAID 0, should this problem disappear?. How should I setup my SATA HDD?. Is it the same to connect it to SATA1/SATA2/SATA3/SATA4 controller?. Or should it be connected into SATA1 -just because there's only 1 HDD in the system-?.
    Thanks a lot!

Yes, unfortunatelly there's a major issue with this kind of HDDs and nForce3&4 chipset based mainboards. I found the following article at the Maxtor web-site -I asked them to send me the firmware upgrade; standing by-:
    Question
I have heard or read that Maxtor drives are incompatible with nForce3 or nForce4 chipsets, or that I need a firmware update to make a Maxtor drive compatible with the nForce chipset. Is this true?
         Answer
Note: This solution is only to be applied to the listed products and only when used with the nVidia© nForce3© or nForce4© chipsets. If you are unsure as to which chipset you have, please contact your motherboard manufacturer or visit your motherboard manufacturer's website for clarification.
Firmware updates are not upgrades. They offer no performance enhancements and exist only to provide specific compatibility resolutions. If you have a drive that is working properly in a computer, you do not need a firmware update.
Do not use a firmware update that is not authorized directly by Maxtor as there are variations of firmware for different revisions of drives that can render drives inoperable if applied to the wrong drive.
Applying firmware to a drive that is not authorized by Maxtor will void the warranty on the drive as this would be considered an unauthorized modification. Please see Maxtor's Limited Warranty Statement for more information.
If your drive came inside an OEM machine such as a Dell, Apple, Gateway etc., do not apply a firmware update at all as this will void the warranty which is held by that manufacturer. Please contact your OEM vendor directly.
The following issues have been identified with Maxtor SATA II drives and the nVidia nForce4 controller:
Data Corruption: If you are experiencing data corruption issues, the problem is not with the hard drive firmware. Please visit nVidia's website to update to the latest nVidia chipset drivers to resolve this issue. Make sure to be familiar with your motherboard specifications as there are several variations.
NCQ: If you are experiencing problems with NCQ (Native Command Queueing) please see nVidia's Knowledgebase ID 768 for more information with an issue nVidia is having with NCQ and the nForce4 chipset, and a forthcoming resolution. They also offer a solution to temporarily disable NCQ.
No Detection: If you are experiencing a problem with your Maxtor SATA-II drive not being detected by your nForce3 or nForce4 host controllers at bootup:
Note: This does not apply if your drive is connected to a non-nForce3 or nForce4 controller such as SIIG (Silicon Image), HighPoint, Promise etc. Many motherboards have multiple host controllers onboard so make sure you are familiar with your motherboard specifications and schematics.
The drives affected are those listed in the following table:
    Model begins with:
    Code (Firmware revision)
    6B- or 7B-
    BANC1980
    BANC1B70
    BANC1BM0
    BANC1BY0
    BANC1E00
    6L- or 7L-
    BANC1G00
    BANC1G10
    BANC1G20
    6H- or 7H-
    HA431BW0
    6V- or 7V-
    VA111610
    VA101610
    VA131610
    VA141610
    Example of a drive label:
    Image
To check your current firmware revision on the drive without removing it from the system, use the Powermax diagnostic CD. Drive model, Serial and firmware Revision is displayed in the upper right hand corner after selecting the drive to test.
A firmware update to resolve this issue for Maxtor SATA II drives is available by contacting Maxtor Support. Please have the drive serial number and the Code number available, which will be listed on the top label of the drive itself.
Firmware updates will be issued for those drives experiencing this problem only, not for experimental troubleshooting. Due to the nature of a firmware code update, a drive can be potentially rendered inoperable so it is critical that data is backed up first.

  • MSI x48c platinum - does not detect SATA HDDs

I am having some problems with a pc build with motherboard not detecting SATA HDDs (MIS x48c Platinum).
I believe I have exhausted all other avenues, and I would appreciate some help if I have missed something obvious.
(details of other components are listed at end of mail).
When I built pc using these components, and went into BIOS settings, the SATA HDD's were not detected.  I tried changing BIOS settings, but no difference if SATA, AHCI, or IDE settings.
I removed the HDDs and successfully tested them in another machine (also formatted them while had them istalled in other pc).
IDE optial drives are detected.  I have tried to boot with these disconnected to ensure no isues with both IDE and SATA drives connected, but this did not resolve issues.
I have also tried connecting HDD to different onboard SATA ports, and connecting just one drive with no success.
Resetting BIOS defaults, and using clear CMOS reset did not resolve issues either.
Sometimes on boot, it takes a few attempts to boot correctly, and on these occassions I receive an error message "Warning !!! The previous performance of overclocking is failed, and the system is restored to the default settings, Press any key except "DEL" to enter setup ......."  I haven't tried to set any over clocking.
I read about a number of issues on MSI forum related to SATA drives which were resolved by BIOS upgrade (mobo was shipped with v.7.0 released 20 March 08).  I managed to install an old IDE HDD and flash BIOS, but still no resolution of issues detecting SATA drives (BIOS V.7.2 released 29 July 08).
I've tried everything I can think of at this stage.  Is there anything else I should try, or is there something wrong with this motherboard?
    Spec:
    Motherboard:
    343949 MSI X48C Platinum, X48, Socket-775,
    DDR2/DDR3, ATX, GbLAN, 2xPCI-Ex(2.0)x1
    Other components in build:
CPU Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550
Graphics Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 512MB
    HDD 2 x Samsung SpinPoint T166 500GB
    RAM 4GB (2x2GB) GeIL DDR3 1333MHz Value Dual Channel (7-7-7-24) PC3-10660
PSU 700W X-Power ATX SLI PSU
ODD DVD & CDR drives from an old pc - IDE connections.

i just remember     i had once similar problem with a sata driver. the issue is this you can not adjust everything in bios in one go and expect mobo to know about it. what i mean is this for instance you disable the raid then you save it and exit and then when it reboot you go back to bios and reset another another parameter,  you save and exit and on reboot you go back to bios and reset another parameter. i got round the prob that way and it worked and mobo saw the sata HDD. give this a shoot good luck and finally make sure raid is disabled
this is what i would do
1- make sure the jumper setting on your IDE Hdd is correct (Y may have to try this twice as there are two different setting on jumper setting for Master)
    2- connect the sata HDD
    3-click on power
4-go to bios and disable raid save exit
5-on reboot go back to bios
6--on first option click on it then you should see all devices that can be seen by mobo if you do not see sata HDD you have to click on enable for the auto to see the device once it sees the device save and exit. REMEMBER THE JUMPER SETTING  ON IDE HDD CAN CAUSE PROB . SO try the other jumper setting for master, repeat this procedure once more hopefully you get it right

  • Where can I buy a new 3.5" SATA HDD with the extra thermal sensor port for my late 2009 imac?

where can I buy a new 3.5" SATA HDD with the extra thermal sensor port for my late 2009 imac?

Depends on the original drive. According to OWC, at least last time I checked some months ago, any current WD drive they sell (up to 2 TB?) will be able to be swapped directly. I am unable to confirm this personally. But, even so, that was a while back. You should check with them again on this. As for Seagates, that might not be so simple.
This is the original article on this from them.
    http://blog.macsales.com/2751-proprietary-cable-can-put-the-brakes-on-upgrading- late-09-imacs
If you find a drive that OWC sells and is certain will swap in directly, you can see if newegg.com has it for less.
This one that OWC sells will swap in directly, according to them.

  • Installing Windows XP Pro on a SATA HDD

    Good Evening Everyone,
I just recently purchased the Gateway GT5678 desktop computer it came pre-installed with WIndows Vista. I want to Install Windows Xp Pro on the Serial ATA HDD, unfortunately I need the drivers and/or controllers so the Windows XP Pro Install could see the SATA HDD and I could finish the install. If any one could send me a link to retrieve the drivers and/or controllers so I could finish the Windows XP Pro install. Once again I am trying to find the correct link where I could download all the correct SATA HDD drivers and/or controllers that I need to finish the Windows XP Pro install. I will be very greatful for any assistance anyone can give me.
The type of Storage Controllers I have are:
        NVIDIA nForce RAID Controller
        NVIDIA nForce Serial ATA Controller
        Microsoft iSCSI Initiator
I do have a floppy disk drive and the F6 feature I will be able to load the 3rd party drivers, but I just need to find out where I could download all the SATA HDD drivers and/or controllers that I need.
                                                                                                                    Thanks for the help,
                                                                                                                             Shawn L. B.

    Hi Shawn,
It seems Gateway has not released Windows XP drivers for your computer. From the Gateway website, we can see only Windows Vista drivers are available for you GT5678 desktop.
    http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/search.asp?st=pn&param=1015334R
Please Note: Since the website is not hosted by Microsoft, the link may change without notice. Microsoft does not guarantee the accuracy of this information.
Please understand that many computers preinstalled with Windows Vista are not compatible with Windows XP now. Before installing Windows XP on it, you’d better contact Gateway to confirm if Windows XP can be fully supported by your computer.
    Hope it helps.

  • Adding SATA hdd for games..7200 OR 10000??

I'm going to be adding a SATA HDD for gaming and choosing between WD Raptor 36GB 10000@$120 or Seagate 80GB 7200@$70. Size isn't as important as performance, which is best bang for the buck??
    Thanks in advance

...best bang for the buck can be interpreted different ways...this is how I look at it...the Raptor is over $3 per GB, the other is ~ $1 per GB...
...just get the Raptor...that's what you want...

  • Mega 865 don't recognize on first time a SATA HDD after shutdown from Windows

    Hi,
I have problem with a SATA HDD (Maxtor 300GB Diamondmax10) in MEGA 865 Barebone:
After I shutdown the PC from Windows when I turn on again the PC the HDD don't start on first time, I need to turn off the PC and turn on again and the HDD will start and recognize.
I tried to format HDD and reinstall Windows, to test the HDD with Maxtor Powermax utility and install the hard disk in other PC but the hard disk is ok. Last I turn on the PC without connect the SATA cable, only the power cable and the hard disk start properly every time.
I tried to upgrade BIOS to last version 1.30 and I make various configuration of BIOS and also I tried to replace SATA cable.
There isn't SATA driver in CD supplied by MSI (only Intel INF driver but no solve the problem).
I think that every time that I shutdown the PC will be stored a standby command in SATA controller that no permit to start the hard disk on first time.
I hope that you help me. Thanks.

That's right, at least for now.
I tried to imply that perhaps your particular type of HDD has some compatibility problem with the SATA ctontroller of Mega 895. Therefore my suggestion was to see if microcode/firmware updates are available for the HDD.

  • Need SATA HDD Recommendation

I can come up with the specs, but I cannot come up with the actual part!  Please recommend me a SATA HDD based on the specs below.  Feel free to recommend outside these specs with justification.
    Requirements:
Compatible with MSI K8N Neo Platinum (MS-7030)
SATA I with 16MB Cache, or SATA II with 8MB Cache
    250GB
    7200 RPM
    3-5 Year Warranty
    NCQ preferred.
Western Digital, Seagate, and Maxtor are preferred.

Quote from: Kwea on 18-November-05, 00:44:36
"Regrettably, despite the "SATA II" moniker, the WD2500KS does not implement SATA Native Command Queuing (NCQ). Though competitors such as Seagate and Maxtor have commenced with NCQ inclusion even on desktop-oriented drives, WD claims that NCQ does not help and can even hurt single-user performance."
This is not a good review. Maybe I bought the wrong drive!
All of the newer hitachi deskstars support sata2 3GB transfers and NCQ (see link below).  However, when you look at comparable reviews on this stuff, most of the time the reviewers state that you really cant noticeably tell the difference in a "real world" application.
    http://www.hitachigst.com/portal/site/en/menuitem.f9b3189a2f2e122d92b86b31bac4f0a0/
And even though its not listed on this fact sheet the 80gb hdd is ncq and sata2 compliant:
    http://www.hitachigst.com/portal/site/en/menuitem.31e08ebe44f8222d92b86b31bac4f0a0/
So if you were to ask me, the hitachi sata2 hdds are a good choice.  Just my 2 cents.

Yes, you can boot off the SATA drive.  You will, however, have to 1st enable the SATA capability in the BIOS.  Upon startup, get into the BIOS (usually press "F6" on startup), then step through the BIOS screens and you will see a place where you enable various IDE drives.   You need to enable the SATA functionality.  Instructions (albeit vague) will also be in your MB owners manual.
    Good luck.
    Scott
PS  After you've formatted the SATA Drive & installed Win XP, you will need to again enter the BIOS and setup the BIOS to boot form the SATA drive.  Right now, you are correctly booting off the CD to install Win-XP.
