SATA + IDE HDD Settings in BIOS

I've used this board for a couple of years. I'm getting ready to install a SATA hard drive for the first time. The user manual instructions on what settings to use are unclear. I will have one SATA hard drive, one IDE hard drive a DVD-ROM and a DVD burner. I need the correct BIOS settings. I think they are all in "On Chip IDE settings" SATA drive will be primary.
MSI 865G board with "D Bracket"
P4 2.4 Ghz 800mhz FSB
2 sticks 256MB Crucial PC3200
Samsung 160GB SATA hard drive
Samsung 40GB IDE hard drive
Antec Truepower 430 PS
Actiontec (Qwest) wireless router for DSL
Lite On 16x DVD and DVD-RW
CTL 21TF monitor
XP Pro
Matrox P650 video card
XP SP2

Please refer to the following setting in BIOS:
On-Chip IDE Configuration
On-Chip ATA(s) Operate Mode      Native mode (Win2000/XP)
ATA Configuration                       PATA only
SATA Keep Enabled                    Yes
PATA Channel Selection                Both
Under these settings, you can connect 6 devices on the ICH5R at most (4 PATA+2SATA) and SATA HDD will be as Primary, you can check this in Standard CMOS Features. If you set ATA Configuration as SATA only and Pata Keep Enabled as Yes, the SATA HDD will show as Third.
Besides, it would be better to choose your boot HDD in Boot Device Select...after doing the On-Chip IDE settings.

  • Adding IDE HDD to a new system with SATA Installed

HUGE NEWB... Sorry to add more to the SATA questions but I can't figure out how to add my old IDE HDD to my new system that has a S-ATA HDD. The S-ATA is set up as a RAID an I have the IDE on it's own cable set as master. The Bios shows that it is there but when the system boots it will go fine until the end of the boot sequence where it looks like a blue screen then reboots very quickly. I looked up some previous threads but all of them seem to have different bios options than my own. System boots fine without the added IDE HDD
    mobo= ms-7103
    P4 2.93mhz
    Seagate 160g S-ATA HDD
    Maxtor 80g IDE HDD
    IDE NEC DVD-RW

As far as the priority goes I have:
    cd/dvd
    IDE 0
    IDE 1
When I go to the normal bios settings I see that it says:
IDE Primary Master      = Maxtor (the Old IDE HDD)
    IDE Primary Slave        = None
IDE Secondary Master  = NEC DVD RW
    IDE Secondary Slave    =None
    Floppy not Installed
I don't see the SATA but that might be normal I don't know
The SATA controller is enabled with RAID also Enabled
I tried to see what the blue screen says but It is too quick and I can't catch it with pause/break
I disconnected the DVD and used it's ribbon cable and it did the same thing, blue screen. The old HDD  was the boot drive on the old machine would that make a difference if it was still formatted  to be a bootable drive even if it was third in the boot sequence? The mobo is listed as ms-7103 on the board and the retail name is 661FM3-V
Thanks for the help thus far!

  • How do I setup 1 serial ata hdd + 1 ide hdd + two optical drives?

    Hello,
I'm new with MSI Boards. I'm unable to get everything recognized by the BIOS. Can someone please explain me how should I setup the configuration and were and what should I connect to what connector or slot.
I'll really appreaciate your help due that I have been trying for 1 week and I can't figure how to put it. Thanks

    Connect the SATA to serial1
Connect the optical drive that you'll be running the XP setup disk from to IDE2
Don't connect any other drives yet.
    In Bios>>Integrated Peripherals>>On-Chip IDE Config:
    Native mode
    PATA only
    Keep SATA enabled-Yes
    PATA channels- Both
    configure SATA as Raid-No
    Leave other stuff alone.
    Bios>>Advanced Features>>Boot device selection:
    Set your preferred boot order.
Reboot from the XP setup CD and install XP
Power off and connect the IDE Hdd to IDE1(set jumpers for single drive)
Connect the other optical drive to IDE2(set jumpers correctly)
    Reboot.
    This should work!

  • K9A2Gm V2 under W2k - SATA/IDE issues

I am having trouble to get W2k running on the K9A2 GM V2 board (I would need that for sw-compatibility issues).
I got it installed and running by enabling IDE emulation. Problem is that the drive gives me 1.5 Mbit/s transfer rate. On another PC with SB600 in RAID-1 configuration same drives gives me 80MB/sec. I used the MSI F-6 x86 drivers that came with the mobo (ATIDrv/SBDrv/IDEATA133). BIOS tells me that the drive has UDMA-6 enabled. The driver is fine in the device manager and shows up as AMD PCI SATA/IDE Bus Driver. Version is 5.1.0.8.
-> Did anyone succeed to run W2K with acceptable disk performance?
I also tried a SATA/RAID setup (using a single drive RAID READY configuration). After the F6 drivers were loaded I got a message that the AHCI drive file is corrupted. I tried several drivers and floppy disks. I also changed the floppy drive with no other effect.
A bit confused I noted a bunch of other drivers on the MSI CD as JMicron, Promise and Silicon_image. I thought the drives work though the SB700 and thus only AMD drivers would make sense. Is that a misunderstanding?
I am running out of ideas. Any experiences or comments?
    Thanks,
    tiger
    My system specs are:
        AMD Phenom 9950 Quad Core
        2GB Ram
        1x 500GB SATA HDD Hitachi HDP725050GLA360
1x DVD Rom on IDE Primary Master
ATI HD 3450 Graphics card, 512MB
        400W PSU
1 additional TP-Link GB LAN card
        W2K Pro SP4
        BIOS A7302 AMS V2.1 021109
I also observed: in Device Manager mit DVD is listed with UDMA mode. The HDD however is not. The fields look like that:
      - type: "automatic detection" but its grayed out
      - mode "Use DMA if available"
      - actual mode "not accessible", or "not available" (its a translation, I dunno what the EN version displays)
That must be the reason that the thing is so slow, but why does it not use the UDMA mode?

    What PIO bug?
There used to be a problem with Win2K, but that has nothing to do with the controller used, this was Win2K going wrong and that was fixed in SP1 or 2, forgot the exact one.
There fix should be in included in SP3 or SP4 (which i use). I saw couple of Microsoft posts how to deal with that. However, I found many postings in the web with the problem and very often the Microsoft fixed did not work too. I have been trying workarounds for a couple of days now. For some guys another driver did the job (e.g. some "SATA" driver, but I did not find a case with a SB700 chipset.)
Quote from: Bas on 03-January-10, 23:20:21
However, when putting the controller in RAID is doesn't use the normal IDE way but it uses SCSI (mini-port) way.
There are no drivers for Win2K, so use IDE mode or XP, btw AHCI in XP is fairly unstable too but that's an XP problem.
But you only have 1 drive, so why bother with RAID or ACHI? IDE-mode is faster anyway.
I agree. RAID/AHCI would have been a workaround for the slow IDE only.
Quote from: Bas on 03-January-10, 23:20:21
Set the controller in IDE mode and use the Microsoft drivers! as there are no specific Win2k drivers.
The slow IDE mode is the initial problem I described in the first post. With the MS drivers I could not get the HDD out of PIO mode. On the MSI driver disk I found specific AMD SB700 drivers for "SATA Controller (Native IDE mode)". The driver was 5.1.0.8 and is designated WinXP32, but usually the XP drivers work fine for W2K. I tried those as well as the standard MS drivers, but I could not get my HDD out of PIO mode.

  • P35 neo3 + ide hdd

    Sorry for my "english"...
    My problem: with cold start mb define my ide hdd as model with udma 2 ( all values - fsb etc is default for my e7200). After reboot (without "stop-start" post) all is OK (udma 6). Bios - 1.20;
Please, give me advice how to get normal work.

Try to go to BIOS and check what mode is your IDE controller being set to.
Do post in this thread on the BIOS settings for verification.
I try and simple "Ide", and "achi ide" - same result.
In "UDMA 2" run not only my hdd, but and my dvd, so - it is not a hdd problem.
(problem only if pc was shutdown and cold power on, or if rebot with "start-stop". In case when rebooting w/o "start-stop" is allright - "udma5" or ide and "udma4" for dvd )

  • Boot with e-sata External HDD - K9N2 Diamond

    Hello.
Installed Windows Vista Home Premium in one hdd, but want to put it in an external case and boot it from there. Does the K9N2 Diamond support boot with an external e-sata disk ? I know that with usb does, but e-sata can't fin out.

    Quote
Windows will refuse to boot from it (Microsoft does not want you to have a removable HD
This is somewhat true for external USB Hard Drive.  However, it has nothing to do with Microsoft not wanting you to do anything.  If Windows is installed on a USB Hard Drive, the problem is that when you try to boot from it, Windows will put out a BSOD.  The reason is that during the early boot phase, Windows will fire up the USB Drivers.  When that happens, there is a change of parameters which will cause a short shut-down of USB Functionality.  Ultimately, Windows will not find the USB Drive it has just booted from and tell you that the whole drive or certain data cannot be found.  This can be overcome by modifying parts of the Installation Routine that handles the Installation of the USB Drivers during boot-up phase.
In any case, the problem is related to USB Drives only.  As eSATA-Ports are hosted directly by the SATA Controller, the operating system will basically just treat it as a normal hard drive (Windows would also not know the difference, when you install an eSATA Bracket connected to one or more of the internal SATA Ports.)
Also, AHCI it basically only needed for HotPlug Support.  As long as the hard drive stays connected to the system, it will be treated like a normal SATA Drive.
    Quote
Microsoft does not want you to have a removable HD that you can carry all over the place and boot from
BTW:  This will not work unless the different systems you want to use the installation with are the same or similar to the system configuration that Windows was installed on.  A different video card and a differen chipset may render the installation pretty much useless. Also, when you change between a system that has AHCI Enabled for the SATA Controller to a System running in SATA/IDE Mode ---> and then back to an AHCI System, there is a high chance that the installation will not properly adapt to the hardware change and mess itself up trying to adapt to the situation in terms of driver intialization.  You may run into to numerous BSODs.

  • Qosmio F10 - Can't change HDD type in BIOS

I want to change my hard disk but the category in BIOS is not changeable.
I cannot change the hard disk type in the BIOS like on my desktop PC.

    Hi questionman
I was mistaken; the F10 is a little bit older notebook and it supports IDE HDD controller!
Usually the BIOS should recognize the inserted HDD automatically
If this is not the case then the issue could be related to controller fault
    But one thing is important and should be checked;
Some 2.5" HDD supports differetn pin assigment. You should check if you would need to change the jumper on the HDD...
A friend of mine has had an similar issue and he could solve this changing the position of the jumper...

  • Any method to use a Samsung 160GB IDE HDD to replace original 60GB HDD in zt3030AP Notebook

    Hi,
Anyone know if BIOS version F.55 supports HDD > 137GB?
I want to use Samsung 160GB IDE HDD to replace the original 60GB HDD that has bad sectors?
Any method like BIOS upgrade or must find a 120GB HDD?
    Many thanks,
    Kenny

trancinchino, you shouldn't encounter any issues in regards to replacing the harddrive in a iMac with a SSD. I believe the issues are the older models such as the 2009. But, be aware that you will need specific tools in order to replace the harddrive because it includes removing the glass panel and the LCD. iFixit's website instructions. http://www.ifixit.com/Device/iMac_Intel_21.5%22_EMC_2428

Im trying to migrate files from my old mac hard drive (old mac isnt working- just hooked up hard drive to sata ide adapter) --- when I go to Migration Assistant, "select your disk" it just keeps thinking, it doesnt pull anything up.  When just plugging in the sata adapter, it doesnt come up automatically to run either.  I have used this adapter before with this old harddrive, so I know it works (I had help the last time)....I just cant figure it out this time.  Please help

You cannot use Migration Assistant.  When you connect the old HDD, does it appear on the desktop of the MBP.  If it does, you will have to transfer the files manually.
If not, does it appear in Disk Utility?  Post a screen shot such as this:
    Ciao.

  • (955X Platinum) IDE HDDs on VIA Controller not powering down

    Hello,
I never had this problem on any motherboard that I've had. Currently, I have one SATA HDD connected to Intel ICH7R controller and two IDE HDDs connected to VIA IDE Controller (running in IDE mode). I have set Windows to power down the HDDs after 30 min. of inactivity (through the Screen Saver tab > Power button). SATA HDD does power down after the specified inactivity period. The two other IDE HDDs don't power down and are spinning all the time.
I always keep my PC on and would like the HDDs to power down when I'm out (sometimes days on end). I have FTP and HTTP servers set up and can access my data remotely whenever I need to and hence do not want to turn off the PC when its not in use !
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

pck, the advantage of having your IDE HDD on ICH7's very own IDE because this IDE is channeled directly into the southbridge. However, the VIA RAID controller is sit on top of PCI bus, then only channeled back to the southbridge (ICH7). Somemore, PCI bus is a shared medium with other PCI devices. However, ICH7's very own IDE is dedicated.
And of course, ICH7's very own IDE can support turn off HDD.
and VIA's controller DOES support Optical drives.

  • T60 USB - IDE HDD enclosure problem

    Hi!
I have problem with my T60 (1951-FCG). Ibought a Konig ide hdd enclosure (cmp-mobstor14), and put it in 250GB WD HDD. (caviar blue).
I use two Thinkpad: T42 to work, and T60 for home.
I used the hdd and the usb rack first time with the T42 without any problem: copied data to hdd.
Today i want use with the T60, and does'nt work!
I plugged in the cabla into the T60 and the XP (SP3) try to connect to the hdd.
Find the usb device (i got message), identifies data storage, and no further action.
The XP is slows down, but the drive does'nt visible in the Total Commander.
If i plug out the usb cable, the situation is unchanged. The op system is remain slow!
    Pls help me! What's wrong?
    Regards:
    Rob

-I find it unlikely the T42 secured the drive via a USB enclosure if it was inserted after the T42 was powered up. T4x ThinkPads set their passwords in BIOS configuration and inconsistently supported HDD security with external USB enclosures. Some enclosures supported the password while others just hung or did other strange things but it didn't seem to matter whether or not they were IBM original enclosures with official FRU#'s.
Robzz should perform additional steps or clarify if it still works seamlessly in your T42 if you Insert the USB drive AFTER the T42 has succcesfully booted XP, is it recognized and accessible as any other data drive? If not:
-Shutdown the T42 for at least 15 seconds and restart WITH THE USB ENCLOSURE INSERTED. Are you prompted for any power on, or HDD passwords ? If YES, then clear it or set it the same as YOU have on the T60.
VERY IMPORTANT: YOU should intially set that password ON THE T42, since the newer T60 will support the older HDD security but the older ThinkPads T42 may fail to recognize security set on the newer T60 systems. IBM/Lenovo typically incorporate "forward level compatibility" but not always and I've been unable to locate any authoratative resource from IBM when the incompatibilities occurred by model type or BIOS revision.
If yes, you can use the BIOS config menus to determine if the USB drive has security, a real novel method, assuming your system has Hibernation enabled:
    1. Insert the new USB drive.
    2. Hibernate the system, ensure the USB enclosure adapter and drive also hiberante
    3. Awaken the ThinkPad, and if you're prompted for a HDD password on spartan black BIOS logon type screen in addition to any normal awken security... then the HDD is ENABLED.
ThinkPads elegantly support the insertion and mounting of secured HDD's without rebooting as long as the USB enclosure is recognized but definitely inside UltraBays. I've saved more employees from a needless reboot after demonstrating hibernation / awaken when the misconception is the entire ThinkPad has to be rebooted to on HDD secured disks.
Those methods and trick are supported on any drive regardless if it's IBM whitelisted in addition to my WDD Blue and Black disks.
Those Caviar drives are fairly reliable, sturdy and behave consistently in most laptops from most manufacturers. You should as a matter of course, determine if this problem occurs when you insert the same drive/enclosure combo in a system other than an IBM/Lenovo or the same Caviar in a different enclosure on the same troubled ThinkPads before trying different drives in the same USB enclosure on differing computers.
That is very effective method to meaningfully isolate the issue and avoid needlessly munging up ThinkPad BIOS configs and security that may be working just fine and as expected with any malfunctioning hardware.
You should do that regardless if it is official and "supported" parts since I suspect ThinkPad telephone technical support might be dismissive of your problems

  • Does Satelite R630-146 support SATA II (SATA-300) HDD

    Hi,
I am planning to change my current HITACHI 5K320 320GB HDD (HTS543232L9SA00) which is SATA I (*SATA-150*) to new HDD, but I can't find any information will my Toshiba Satelite R630-146 support new SATA II (*SATA-300*) HDD.
Maybe anyone has any ideas where I could find such information?
    Thanks,
    Vaidas

    Hello
SATA II HDDs are downgrade compatible to older SATA I interface. They have the same power and specification so its no problem to change the HDD to SATA II.
Furthermore there is no HDD capacity limit so you can install every 2.5 HDD. You can buy one with 500GB, 750GB or more, thats no problem :)
