SATA III drives?

Does anyone know if and when SATA drives will be updated to the next spec of 600MB/sec for SATA III drives....todays standard is 300MB/sec for SATA II drives.

You can use the Marvell but those wont show in the Rapid Storage Manager. That is just for the Intel controller. You have to set the Marvell
controller to raid in the bios and then install the raid driver and software for the Marvell. I believe their Raid Management install might be separate from the driver install.
You can use both the Marvell and the Intel 6Gbs ports. You will just have to use different utilities to manage them. Keep in mind though that 6Gbs does not show a performance gain on mechanical drives unless you have them on a SAS controller in a large raid. Only SSD drives really show a performance gain.

P55A-GD65 Can not see Sata III drive

I can not get the bios to see my 250gig sata III. I have it connected to sata#7 white connector.
I tried to first see it, no go. I am trying to fresh install w7 hp upgrade 64bit to my new sata III drive. I can not find the drive. I do not know if it is bad or what?
I set Integrated peripherals- sata 6g/s controller mode to ahci, and in on-chip ata devices raid mode set it to ahci. I tried to install w7 from disc. It just Says I have made a hardware change. Try to do a repair start or start as normal. Then said my boot sector was messed up. I pressed reset and got into bios and set it all back to ide mode.
It would not start normal. But from page it says try w7 disc etc. I told it to start windows normally it did, I have rebooted So I guess it fixed the boot sector..
I am not sure what to do. I can not find the drive, and no place in my bios can I find the sata 7-8 connectors. they are listed as 1-6 and 9.. everything skips 7-8. I am in w7 now. I could do the reg tweak. I want to fresh install w7 upgrade on my new sata III drive. then nuke this sata II and make it a storage drive..
Maybe I need to press a key with w7 disc in during restart. I can not figure out how to make Let me reinstall w7. I did press F6 but I did not know what to do. Upgrading from xp was pretty easy. This sata III and mobo and w7 is a head ake. It is no simple instructions no place to make this stuff work right. Ha ha the manual is no help either.
I do not know if maybe the drive is bad or not. I never had to do this stuff in bios just to install a drive, and then controllers 7-8 show no place. I do not know what to do..

My cam batteries are acting up. Sorry not better photo'. The second photo. I changed out my speakers set up etc, and its photo was with our cam corder, it has no flash.. The top 5.25 bay filter is a test. I need better materials to make a better 1, but it works well, not so pretty tho. If I relax the pantyhose, It looks a lot better, is black. You can not see through it, but less air flow...
The blower box mod I made from a gutted opt drive, uses the rest of the 5.25 bay cage as the lower sides of the box. The top side, the actual gutted opt drive, I used my zig saw, cut along the sides from the top and back end. So it was free to bend down. You can not see from the photo, but it is down just above the top of the mobo tray, and extends out past the back side of the 5.25 cage. With both downward blowing air and is more compressed or moves faster because the top is bent down etc. I cut off the access on the side so not to go past the 5.25 cage. Made a face plate to mount the fan [can crank 103 cfm] to the other end of the gutted opti. It is easy in out, uses my normal case mounting gear, and is flush with the front of the case. The filter and or front cover are separate. I need to make a better filter frame. But it works. I like it for now.. My twin p160 case has the same set up, but using a 80mm face plate and fan, and being a normal 5.25 opti drive as it base, they can go case to case, most all cases have a 5.25 cage, so. I could use this on the lian li case below and just mount a normal fan filter right to the face plate..>>
Build #2, my buds rig, was a snap to build. Not 1 fault in the entire build from- view reliability history. The large case was nice to work in.. Both systems running great and with AHCI support.

MSATA or SATA III Drive

Hello,
I currently own a T420-4177CTO with a 160GB SSD drive and am running out of space. Without taking any covers off I believe this is installed in the main bay underneath the unit. After some research I believe I have a couple of options. One would be to simply upgrade the existing SSD to a larger SATA III 512GB SSD in the same slot, which as I understand it is SATA III capable -about $500.00. Second option would be to add an mSATA drive to the available slot on the side of the unit ( not the ultra bay) and move mostly storage files to that new drive - about $260.00. The read / write speeds look to be similar but the power consumption for the mSATA is higher and it might be a bit slower. My guess is that it will be faster than the current factory installed drive so that should not be a concern. Are those assumptions correct ? If so should I take the opposite approach and move the operating files to the newer drive ?

Your current SSD is a Intel 520 if i am correct, since Lenovo offered intel ssd in the 160 gigs capacity. If it is the Intel one, then your mSATA will be slightly slower in terms of boot up (by 1 or 2 secs at most), and other data bandwidth intensive apps.
For normal use mSATA and 2.5 inch SATA is about the same.
I am currently on a mSATA 128 gigs and 500 gigs hdd in the main bay, and the performance difference compared to a pure Intel 520 that i had before is minimal.

First, you do not have an iMac G5. G5s are PPC machines, but yours is an Intel model.
You can install a SATA III drive but I would not spend the money since your model only supports SATA I or SATA II depending on which model you have. I would also be careful about using Crucial SSDs because they may not all work in a Mac. I would get your SSD at OWC instead. You will find their equivalent product for SATA I or SATA II here. I have two of these drives, and they are excellent.

You can certainly install whatever drive you like, but your Macbook Pro is fixed at SATA II. SATA III drives will work fine, but only up to 3Gb/s (which far exceeds a rotational drive's read/write speeds anyway).
In practical terms, if you want to copy your current system onto the new drive, you would need to buy an external enclosure (Firewire or USB2), install the new drive in that and format it Mac Extended using Disk Utility. Clone your current system over using SuperDuper.
Make sure the new drive is named something different from the original drive to distinguish them when you restart. Test that it will boot by holding down Option as you power up the computer.
Remove the new drive from the enclosure and install it using iFixit guides.
If you don't want to use the files on your current drive, you don't need the enclosure, but it's recommended, so you can use your current drive as extra storage after you do the upgrade.

6560b notebook - no sata-III ssd drives detected - hardware problem - HP employee needed

I'm one of the authors of this thread about the problem statet in the title.
As the current forum thread might be slightly misplaced under 'Notebooks>Updates', I opened this thread here to get contact to one of the experts from HP.
We need technical support. We have tried every possible solution to fix this problem.
As several owners of the 6560b have experienced, sata-III SSD drives don't work in any of the two internal drive slots of the 6560b.
Most recent firmware updates on ssd / notebook are installed. The SSD drives work fine in other computers. The problem is reproducable. The drives are not correctly recognized on BIOS level at boot.
There is no known 6560b notebook running an internal sata-III drive.
Some of the drives that are reproducably failed to be recognized:
Kingston HyperX 120GB - Sata-III
Corsair Force3 120GB - Sata-III
Corsair Force GT 120GB - Sata-III
Intel 510 - Sata-III
OCZ Vertex 3 - Sata-III
OCZ Agility 3 - Sata-III
Sata-III drives appear to work and are bootable* via the external esata connection.
(verified by one user)
This, however, is no usuable workaround.
A short summary of the impact of this bug:
-it appears to affect every notebook
-the problem is not limited to SSDs with sandforce chips, one manufacturer, one drive size or one bios version of the 6560b.
Just to repeat this: the chipset as well as the sata-chipset are from Intel. Yet modern Intel drives (510 series) fail to be recognized. Therefore, this problem cannot be 'simple' chipset incompatibilties either, as Intel would not ship SSDs that have incompatibilities with their <6mo. old chipsets.
The problem does not directly relate to the hardware failures of sata-II ports known as 'intel-sata-bug' as the affected models include newer mainboards of revised steppings.

I have the same problem on my 6560b notebook. A brand new Kingston HyperX 240GB - Sata-III is unable to boot. Drive is not seen/detected at boot time by BIOS. BIOS is latest available (F.50). Chipset is Sandy Bridge HM65.
UEFI has been enable. I have to degrade manually, in BIOS settings, SATA3 (6Gbps) to SATA2 (3Gbps) for the drive to be usable. But perfs are not here for that kind of drive, so I'm very upset about that.
Any BIOS fix appreciated.

Does dv6-6153cl support SATA III HDDs?

I'm having trouble with my laptop and I think I've narrowed the problem down to the HDD. I want to replace it, and upgrade it, but I'm not sure what HDDs I can use.
I'd like to know if I can install a SATA III HDD into my dv6-6153cl laptop. From what I can tell it currently has a SATA II HDD installed. Can I upgrade to SATA III or am I stuck with SATA II?

Get the SATA-III. Even if the motherboard would only support SATA-II (not true in your case) you can use SATA-III drives. SATA is fully backward compatible. But, again, your motherboard has the HM65 chipset which supports SATA-III. A good rule of thumb is if it has USB 3.0 it also has SATA-III. Not 100% true but awfully close to always true.

The chipset in the 4540s supports SATA III transfer speeds.
I would hope that the HP engineers designed the notebook to connect the hard drive to a SATA III port!
I doubt that HP installed a SATA III drive in the model though.
While it is a nice notebook, it is a low end business model.

GX740-079US SATA III support?

It is hard to find a definitive answer, but my gut feeling says the GX740 support SATA II and not III though certain sites are offering SSD options with the SATA III drives. Does anyone know for if the GX740-079US support SATA III as I am looking to upgrade to SSD. TIA!

SSD SATA II vs. SATA III

I have a MacBook Pro 5,5 currently loaded with a 512GB HD. I'm looking into going SSD and have a question about SATA II (3Gb/s) vs. SATA III (6Gb/s).
I understand my Mac only supports SATA II and I have read that if I use a SATA III drive instead, my Mac will treat it as a slower SATA I drive rather than SATA II. Is this true?
I'm asking because most drives today are SATA III, although OWC still sells SATA II drives. These are more expensive per GB than SATA II, though...an OWC 960GB is almost $700 while other brands offer SATA III drives in the 1TB range for under $500. That's a significant price hit but worth it if the SATA II drive will give me better performance in my Mac.

Some SATA III (6Gb/s) drives will in fact revert to SATA I (1.5Gb/s) speeds in some Macs rather than falling back to SATA II (3Gb/s) as it should. One example of this is the OWC 6G SSD. Special note for specific 2009 iMacs, 2008-2010 MacBooks, 2008-2009 MacBook Pros & 2009 Mac mini.
While a 6G SSD does function, it will only do so at SATA Revision 1.0 (1.5Gb/s, 150MB/s) speeds rather that the SATA Revision 2.0 (3.0Gb/s 300MB/s) speed the computer can deliver.
If you have a computer that only has SATA II, then you may have better luck getting a drive that only supports that speed and no higher. I followed OWC's advice when buying an SSD for my Macbook Pro 5,3 (mid-2009 15") and purchased the OWC 3G SSD. Connects at 3G speeds in both the main HD bay and in the optical bay.

Early 2011 13" MacBook Pro Sata III

What does Negotiated Link Speed: 3 Gigabit mean when I have a sata III drive and connection?
I have an Early 2011 13" MacBook Pro and purchased a Corsair Force 3 120gb SSD to replace the HDD. It's all running fine (kind of). I have the latest firmware on the drive and all the updates for my mac. This drive is supposed to get around 500 MB/s r/w speed but because it is only being recognized at 3 Gigabit my speeds are being severely impacted.
Is there some way to force the drive into Sata III?

No. A good example is the 6Gb/s Crucial C300 SSD. It has a read speed of 350MB/s on a 6Gb/s host adapter. But on the built-in 3Gb/s SATA interface (like the Mac Pro internal and MacBook Pro internal), the read speed drops to 270MB/s -- or no faster than the fastest 3Gb/s SSD. The write speed never gets over 230MB/s on either interface.
As for 6Gb/s PCIe SATA III host adapters, the two port variety is has good read speeds but the write speeds are subpar. The only 6Gb/s host adapter I've seen with a fast read and write speed is the ATTO ExpressSAS R680 adapter. With that card and an external SAS/SATA enclosure from Raidon/Stardom (ST8-U5), I measured 806MB/s with 4 SSDs and 1503MB/s with 8 SSDs.

Please make sure you are getting at least equal capacity as the original one in order to use Recovery Disks. If you need you can buy a larger, but not smaller capacity Hard Disk Drive. For example if you have a 500GB Hard Disk Drive you can upgrade it to 750GB Hard Disk Drive but not 320GB Hard Disk Drive
Note: Back up all the personal data to an external drive if it's possible. Otherwise you could connect the failed HDD via SATA to USB adapter with another PC or same PC after replacement of HDD & re-installation of OS and try copying /recovering the files. Bimmer 7 is correct, but it's still plenty fast. I too have a macbook 5,2 that I recently installed a sata III drive in. Start up time went from 1:48 to 34 seconds.

Slow SATA III

Hello all, first time poster here. I have a new system built with the following specifications:
MSI Z68A-GD65 (I have updated the Bios once, pretty sure it is on the most recent Bios currently)
Intel I5 2500k

I have set up the two hard drives in Raid 1, then partitioned into two drives (All through the Intel Raid).
I have my system completely up and running with no problems, beyond my hard drives are running slowly. I am getting a 5.9 through windows rating. I have ran HD Tune and I am seeing roughly a min of 50 max of 150 (I am at work, will try to run tonight and post the screenshots).
I have never tried to install Sata III drives before, did I miss a step?

Edit: Also, I am using Sata III cables (Silverstone Tek 180 Degree SATA III Cable with Non-Scratch Locking Mechanism)

I'm not famular with that RAID controller.
Some are "real" independent controllers, some are not.
Anyway, 5.9 is normal.
I have WD blue 500 GB hDDs in a RAID 0 that does much better.
Hard to believe it's only because I'm 0 and you are 1 but maybe so.
My HDtune results.
These are on basic sata cables.
Test have shown there is no differeance between a sata III cable or a regular quality made sata I cable except a locking mechanism.
BTW, my drives are partitrioned also for an XP/win 7 dual boot.
5.9 is my score like yours.
I've read that there are technologies incorported in some drives that allow them to call them a higher sata number.
It's not speed alone that puts HDDs in a sata catagory.
As BAS said, platter drives are much slower by virtue of old tecnology.
