Sata issues with k8n-fsr

Hi list!
I have serious issues with my sata drive on my K8N Neo-FSR.
The SATA drive is connected on the SATA3 controller, and an IDE DVD is connected as master on IDE channel 1. The DVD is detected by the BIOS and can be booted...
BUT, the SATA hard drive is not detected by the BIOS, and so neither by WinXP or Linux installers...
I tried loads of configurations settings in the BIOS like SATA3/4 Enabled, RAID IDE enabled, ... Boot priority options do not show the HD...
Please help!!!!!!!
Here is my config:
MSI K8N Neo-FSR (NVIDIA nForce3 250Gb)
Hitachi 160 Go 7200 RPM 8 Mo Serial ATA (bulk)
Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro
NEC ND-3500 - DVD(+/-)RW

hi zorloc,
looking at size of your new drives are they the new ncq capable seagates, in which case it may be a compatability issue. Maxtor 10 series users have had similar issues.
Try updating bios to the new officiial v1.5 which has Raid v4.6 & may be better for these drives.
You'd also be best upgrading to the latest Nvidia 5.1 drivers .
Other than this Try & see if any of the fixes that worked for the Maxtor users work for you.
see Maxtor 16Mb Cache HDDs & Neo2 Problems there are several more member €ric had some success at end of included thread.
Edit: This may also be of interest Ech a fellow Neo 754 user has had a long stuggle trying to get his maxtor 10 to work Updated Neo BIOS to fix Maxtor 16Mb problem?

  • Freezing issues with K8N Neo2 Plat & 6800 gt

Well I get random freezing during games. Sometimes it freezes for 5-10 seconds then comes back, while other times it just freezes and the sound comes back but not the game.
I had this problem when I first upgraded.
    K8N Neo2 plat
    1gb corsair xms 3200
    athlon 64 3500
    aslo have:
420-30? antec tru power supply. I cant remember exact number.
    6800gt ultra
    audigy 2 plat
Now I first posted my problem a while ago and someone told me to try chaning the HT to 4x instead of 5x. So I did and it worked. It worked for a few weeks and now the problems have come back.
    Any Ideas?

Along with the above issues, I've also found that a lot of my gaming probs with the 6800 are due to it being a "bandwidth hog" & it's latency needs to be adjusted lower to enable the other devices on the PCI bus (i.e. sound card) to get enough bandwidth to function properly. This isn't noticeable until you start some heavy gaming with a lot going on at once...
If your game ever practically chugs to a halt when a lot of sounds are being produced, this is the main problem. Here's a way & some notes on how to deal with it. Just like every "tweak" though, it's not guaranteed to work for everyone but I got noticeable benefits from it.
    - D/L (I got it @ guru3D) PCI Latency Tool & give the "Read Me" a quick once-over. Write down the values for your devices, in case you need/want to change 'em back. Most items are well labeled - the 6800 & your sound card will be what you are most interested in. I wouldn't mess with the rest of 'em, as they deal with low level system items that are best left alone. Unless you are truly an Uber Geek!
    - The latency for my 6800 listed as a massive 248 clks! For some reason, I've read that ATI cards don't default at such a large value, which might explain why people don't seem to have as many performance issues with 'em. Anyhow lower the 6800 to a more "reasonable" value, like 128 or 64. 64 seemed to work best for me.
    - Save the settings, reboot & test it out. You can experiement with the sound card latency too, in order to find what works best for you, but I wouldn't set it at less than it's default value (32).
    Hope this helps.

  • Bios issues with k8n neo2, turn of memory test, and dmi pool data

    Hey guys.
I recently flashed my bios to the 1.9's for the K8n neo2 running in my main machine.
Everything went ok for the most part, though i had some issues with boot record, and boot.cfg file.  That stuff is all worked out now.
However, with this bios, I constantly get the extended memory test, on my 2 gigs of ram.  The old bios i had, 1.4's, didnt do that.  Is there an option to turn that off?  I cant seem to find it any where?
My 2nd question is this, after this bios upgrade, my verifying dmi pool data takes longer then it used to, if it even did it before, im not sure, because my boot sequence was much faster.
How can I get rid of the "verifying dmi pool data" or speed it up?
    Thanks guys

Tried to used the Bios 1c by Syar's. His bios is nice and easy. Maybe bould solve your problem.BTW do used liveupdate to flashed your Bios or is it manual? Stay away from using liveupdate as it causing a lot problems. Manual is the best way. Refer to my sig for the manual flashing. Here's the location of the files for the Bios 1C. Gd luck.

  • SATA DVD RW issues with K8N Platinum

    Hi
    I have MSI K8N,(939-pin) Platinum-SLI, Mother Board (AMD 3200+, 1.25GB RAM, 80GB SATA HDD).
On my system  I am facing trouble with SATA DVD- Writer (Samsung's 22x, S-223F/IDBH), as it can read all supported disks but unfortunately it is unable  to write/burn CD/DVD in any format since I purchased this DVD writer . Surprisingly this very same DVD writer  works perfectly  with any other Intel's machine for both reading & writing functions.
"However the DVD writer with IDE cable works fine on my system without any change or any exclusive setting anywhere."
Following measures I have tried but failed to burn any disk with my SATA DVD writer
    1. Reseted the BIOS to default/reset to factory setting.
        a) Verified that both of the SATA  controller were enabled.
        b) Verified that RAID was Disabled.
    2. Swaped & connected the DVD writer SATA cable to the port in which the HDD SATA cable was plugged in.
    3. Repleced the complete DVD writer from Samsung Service Center.
    4. Updated the Nero from 7.X to 8.X on the system
    5. Tried to burn disks with other freeware disk burning tools. (e.g. "Burn Plus", "Burn free" etc).
    6.  No other  Optical drive was attached.
    7. Updated the firmware of DVD writer from samsung's service center.
In all the cases of attempting to burn disks, I found either of the following errors
    Error Message 1
    Invalid block address
    Invalid write state
    Could not perform EndTrack
    Burn process failed
    ******************   OR   *****************************
    Error Message 2
    Invalid block address
    Writing short lead-out
    Session fixation error
    Burn process failed
Kindly help me to resolve the issue. :(
    Thanks

You didn't mention if the DVD drive showed up in your bios.  Look in "Standard CMOS Features" , you should have a list of all devices attached to the ide and sata ports.
you said the drive will play music, is the sound analog (through the small sound cable connected between JCD1 on your motherboard to the DVD drive, or are you getting sound digital (sound signal coming from the DVD through the sata cable)?
Is this a replacement DVD player, an upgrade from a CD player, or a brand new install?
Which Operating System are you using? In the past, I have had cd/dvd drives that some how got set up in the os only to play music and would not read or write data discs.
I fixed the problem by removing the cd/dvd drivers from the system and reinstalling.
I am using or have used  LG, Sony, and Aopen  BD/DVD/CD drives on this motherboard (K8N Neo2 Platinum).
"Ya Scottike , following are my observations
    1. I 'm able to see all connected drives connected through sata ports (i.e. HDD & this DVD Writer) in BIOS under "Standard CMOS Features".
    2. This DVD Writer is absolutely working fine for all reading functionality.
(It plays music are you getting sound digital (sound signal coming from the DVD through the sata cable)).
    3.  No Other Optical Drive is attached.
    4. Currently Windows Vista Ultimate is installed.
Note: I have also tried with Windows XP + SP2 earlier on my system, its gives same error whenever tried to
burn any disk with this DVD writer.
    5. This is a brand new DVD writer.
Hope I have answered all your queries. Please let me know what can I do to solve my purpose.
    Thanks

  • PLEASE HELP! Restarting issue with K8N SLI. need bios help???

      Hi people,
I would really appreciate some help this this problem im having. It’s a bit long winded but ill try to keep it short.
My pcs spec is as follows –
MSI K8N SLI (model MS-7185) motherboard
    AMD Athlon X2 64bit 4200+ cpu
    4 x 512mb ram
Running with a Radeon X700 256mb graphics card.
Ever since I purchased the machine ive been having problems with the pc loading up XP (or any OS for that matter!). Sometimes it would freeze on the loading screen and sometimes it would freeze on the black screen just after the loading screen.  Sometimes while running windows perfectly normally, a blue screen with writing describing the error came up and then the system restarted, however, I would only ever manage to read the title of the blue screen as the pc restarted so quickly. I remember seeing the word hardware though,  so I guessed it was a serious hardware issue. I lived with this for a few months thinking it might be something im doing that’s making it be so unreliable, such as a software issue, but I recently went on a mission to sort it out. The BIOS of the motherboard was password protected and I wasn’t aware of this until I had lost contact with who I had bought the system off, so I decided to restart the motherboard’s settings by pressing the reset button on the board itself. Next time I booted it up it told me that the defaults were restored etc and continued to boot windows, however now I can hardly get windows to start at all, the system restarts on the loading screen 8 times out of 10, and if it does boot up fully then it doesn’t last long before crashing on me. I messed about with a few of the BIOS settings, but to be honest I have no experience with working with these settings, its all very new to me. I have an idea  that it could be the processor or the graphics card causing the problem, just an inkling though!
If anyone can help me I would appreciate it greatly. Thank you. Adam

  • Fan Controlling Software Issues with K8N-Neo4-F

    My mobo is a K8N Neo4-F 3.0.
    1. Is there anyway to control the Northbridge and System fan using Speedfan? I searched so far without any solutions.
    2. I tried MSI Corecenter for a while (the last version), and it triggers the alarms and atempts to shut down the system without any visible reason everytime the PC comes backs from hibernation. I have the latest BIOS and latest drivers on my PC. What could be wrong?

It could be the sensor is bad on the system fan or the header itself. Is it possible for the wire from the NBFAN1 to reach the CPUFAN1 and the wire from the CPUFAN1 to reach the NBFAN1?  That way we could test to see if it's the fan or MOBO header? I'm not sure this is possible, but it occurred to me as a test.  According to the manual, both headers have the same configuration and 12V feed. I think the amp specs are the same for both headers(someone that is better with electronics should speak up here). Make sure you have the CPU fan set to 100% or whatever as I'm not sure if the NB fan can or should be speed adjusted.
According to page 2-16 of your manual, it only mentions control of the CPUFAN1 header:
    Quote
    Fan Power Connectors: CPUFAN1 / SFAN1 / SFAN2 / NBFAN1
The CPUFAN1 (processor fan), SFAN1 (system fan 1), SFAN2 (system fan 2) and
NBFAN1 (NorthBridge Chipset fan) support system cooling fan with +12V. It supports
three-pin head connector. When connecting the wire to the connectors, always take
note that the red wire is the positive and should be connected to the +12V, the black
wire is Ground and should be connected to GND. If the mainboard has a System
Hardware Monitor chipset on-board, you must use a specially designed fan with
speed sensor to take advantage of the CPU fan control.
    MSI Reminds You...
    1. Always consult the vendors for proper CPU cooling fan.
    2. CPUFAN1 supports fan control. You can install Core Center utility
that will automatically control the CPU fan speed according to
    the actual CPU temperature.
    3. Please refer to the recommended CPU fans at AMD® official
    website.
But, In addition to finding out about this issue, I can't stress enough about getting a better PSU.

  • SATA issues with 2.6.18 and Dell Poweredge SC420

My primary HDD is on SATA. My secondary HDD is on SATA through a PATA --> SATA adapter.
Everything works quite nicely under 2.6.17 (any version). Under 2.6.18, my primary HDD is detected just fine, but the secondary is not. It's hard for me to do any real diagnosis since I'm 2000 miles away from my computer (and will be for several months), but I'd like to know what I can check. All requisite hooks were present in the mkinitcpio conf file, and mkinitcpio's output suggested that it parsed them OK. Why would one SATA drive get picked up while the other is not?
I verified that it is not a hardware issue by reverting to 2.6.17. All drives were detected appropriately. Thanks for your insight!

  • Issues with K8N Neo4 Platinum Socket 939 and Athlon64 3000+ Venice

Hello everyone, I am planning a long overdue upgrade of my system. Right now I'm looking at the K8N Noe4 Platinum (non SLI) mobo with a Athlon 64 3000+ Venice CPU.
I haven't seen any posts saying NO DON'T PUT THESE TOGETHER but then maybe I've missed something. Any comments would be appreciated, if you know if any problems that seem common between these two please let me know. Thanks!

there is no problem with them.Just make sure if you can that it will come with the latest Bios that full support Venice core.If not ,then it is easy to update it afterwords.
Just also make sure that with you upgrade that you will have a real good PSU more than 450W or/and with 26-35 A on the +12V rail.

  • Video card driver issue with K8T FSR

I put a new system togather yesterday. Here are the spcs.
    AMD64 2800+
    MSI K8T FSR (VIA chipset)
Geil Value Series 184 Pin 512MB DDR PC-3200
    WD 120 mb drive
    Gainward fx5600xt 128MB
I installed Windows XP 32bit, VIA 4in1 drivers and directX 9. Most of the BIOS is set to safe performance (no overclocking). I then installed the latest nvidia drivers and rebooted. I see the Windows XP logo and then I get different colors on the screen. No display or colors only (no pattern). I rebooted in safe mode and uninstalled the drivers and the system booted fine. I then installed the driver I got with the card and same thing happened. Anyone experince this sort of behavior after installing video driver? Or does anyone have a suggestion on how I can fix my problem. Any help is grealy appreciated.
    Thanks.

Try installing latest drivers from card manufacturers website. Before you do that, go ahead and install DirectX drivers first...then re-boot system and try to locate latest video card drivers. Or, let Widows find compatible drivers from it's source, and use those until you get your system running stable....then venture out on the web for your GPU's latest software....just some ideas.....

  • Pci card issues with K8N Neo-V2

    Motherboard: MSI K8N Neo V2.0  (ms-7030 ver:3.0)
Network & sound cards won't work properly with this motherboard while using Ubuntu 7.10 or 8.04 but they work fine under Windows XP Pro. The same network & sound cards were tested with other motherboards running Windows or Ubuntu successfully. Shortly thereafter, the motherboard wouldn't POST correctly so I flashed the bios with the correct bios from http://www.msicomputer.com/support/bios_result.asp
After following the flashing instructions, I checked the CMOS settings & the incorrect bios version is displayed. If I install Ubuntu while using these cards, neither network nor sound cards will work but onboard sound & audio adapters work. I've tried everything posted on the MSI site regarding flashing & bios recovery but all results are failures. Is there anything else I can do to zero this motherboard & getting it working properly?  Thanks.

Only reason why I flashed/updated the BIOS is because the motherboard wouldn't POST properly. After I flashed the BIOS, the motherboard POSTed fine.
To answer your question about the BIOS update you listed, yes, I did try that one along with a version 7 listed for the same part #: ms-7030.
I reinstalled Windows XP Pro last night & both cards are working fine. Because this project seems like an experiment to me, I tried the latest Live Update utility offered by MSI. Strangely, it saw that I was using BIOS version 7 & showed me a version 7.1 update. I updated the BIOS again to version 7.1, and the BIOS version listed now in the CMOS is version 7.1.
As for what components I have, I'm using the following:
audio: Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live! (ct4780)
    video: MSI FX 5200
    network: Linksys lne100tx v4
hard drive: IDE ata100 Western Digital WD800JB

But it seems to be running at single channel 64mhz (which I can't figure out)?  An suggestions on what to do here?
If I were to buy some new memory what memory is best for this motherboard?

Slot 1+2 is recommended if only two modules are used .

  • Sound Issues with K8N Neo4 Platinum

Over the last few days I've not been able to get any sound through the onboard line out socket in my pc. I only built it 2 weeks ago and havent noticed until the other day when I first used speakers. So for about 3 days now I've gone through ALL of the Windows Techinical Support but nothing worked, ive reinstalled the drivers several times, the onboard sound is ENABLED in the BIOS, the volume is on full, the speakers have power and are also on full volume.
I've read countless posts on here related to my motherboard (see below), and was wondering if anyone thought that it might be to do with powersupply to the board?

I'm sorry to be such a pain, but that hasnt helped either. I've looked at and changed almost everything, but nothing has worked.
When I look in the program in my system tray ( NVidia NVMixer ) I can only find one button that has anything to do with digital sound.....but its for microphone input.
When I installed these NVidia drivers, I had another icon in the system tray which was a blue square, with a yellow circle in the middle, then around it, it had 2 yellow "(" and ")" around it, to look like sound waves.....but thats gone for some reason, and I can't find a way of turning it back on.
My speakers are just the Altec Lansing ones that came with the family Dell computer as standard, but I've only got them plugged in whilst I sort out this problem, afterwards, I'm going to be linking my pc to my sound system.

  • Slow SATA format with K8N ?

I have got 2 Seagate 160GB SATA hard drives. Now I remember when I had my MSI VIA K8T mobo, I used to be able to format my partitions in seconds. Now it takes forever to format
How can I speed things up?

    Hi thx for the reply
    1. How are the hard drives connected ?
They are connected via SATA1 and SATA2
    2. Are they in raid ?
    No.
    3. Did u make sure u did a fast format ?
I have tried fast and normal, and its even the same, when formating in dos when installing XP
Ok while I was writing this post, I deleted, one of my old partitions, and formated it again. Guess what it formated 30GB in about 1/2 a second Yeah!
I dont know why it didnt do this before Strange.. anyway Im back to warp speed, carry on as usual folks

Workknot, thanks for the link.  The info was very interesting..especially the part about other drives being effected.  This drive was "relatively" new, being built in Feb 06.  Since Seagate aquired Maxtor, I don't know if the Maxtor issue will be forever resolved or if some/more Seagate drives will be effected in the future.  Built2Last, thanks for pointing out the different RAID capabilities.  The PCB you mentioned is the one I have.  Other than the RAID 5,10 capability (dont know what that is), I'm uncertain why they would incorporate two different controllers.  Up to now, I never even looked at the back of the manual where the RAID stuff is located.  I'm a 'simple' user and thought that installing this drive would have been as simple as plugging in another IDE.
