SATA not working after Windows rebuild

Apologies as some of these topics seem to have been covered elsewhere. My problem is as follows:
1) I bought an X2 4400+ to replace my AMD 3200+. I duly flashed Bios 9.3 (following the instructions and advice given here - thanks everyone) and guess what - everything worked, except the Promise controller would not detect the IDE drive properly (which it had under Bios 3.3). I 'fixed' this by putting it on IDE 1 as a slave. At thsi stage my SATA drive on the Via controller was fine.
2) I then discovered that I was still not getting any performance improvement. Afer much reading around I discovered that I needed to re-build windows to get multi processor support. I did this, and now have MPS processor (or similar I am not on the 'suspect' PC as I write), instead of ACPI Uniprocessor in Device manager.
3) Now the problems! My SATA drive is on the Via controller. After the Windows 2000 rebuild it showed up as Drive C. BUT I could not read any data on it and there were no divers shown in Device manager. But it was clearly visible in 'My computer'.
4) I have variously:
Physically disconnected the device and restarted. - no result.
Re-set the Bios (by using the) Jumper. After this I have re-set the BIOS to SATA (for the Via controller) - no joy
Set Bios optimised defaults and re-set the Via to SATA. Even with the latter, Windows does not auto detect the Via controller at all.
All my digital photos are on this drive. Most of the data is backed up, but it is a mamoth task to restore four years of data..
Any ideas??

Firstly, thanks to everyone for taking the time reply.
Some points for you, maybe you can come up with a good solution!
1) Both the Via Sata and Promise Sata show up in the sequence before boot up, if they are enabled.
2) I have selected the Via Sata driver in integrated peripherals. I have also reset the BIOS by using the jumper on the motherboard to clear the memory. I have also done the trick of setting optimised deafuts and the re-setting the settings in the Bios
3) I have tried to make my drive work with the promise controller - no joy.
4) I have done a repair install and hit F6, I inserted the Via controller floppy. Still no joy. SCSI not seen in Device manager.
5) The Operating sytem is on a separate IDE disk.
6) I have the feeling that Windows is not preoperly detecting the Via contraoller, because even when I see the disk (but cannot access it) in My Computer, the Via controller does not show in Device Manager, at all. This confuses me. How can Windows see the device in my computer but still not recognise it in Device Manager? Could I have some low level windows drivers present (I have installed sp4) that are confusing the situation?
Maybe when I get home (I am on a business trip for 10 days) I will try setting up a fresh system with another hard drive.
Thanks again,
George Adam

Welcome to the HP Forums  MillaMagia,
I see by your post that the USB isn't being recognized.
I can help you with this issue.
Are you using the same USB cable? (known good USB cable)
You want to use the normal USB slot 2.0 cable and not the latest USB 3.0.
USB 3.0 are supposed to be backwards compatible.
Try another USB port on the Laptop, some of the USB ports are more powered then others.
I have provided a document to see if the printer is partially recognized in the device manager, which is causing the printer not to be recognized again. (the uninstall from the CD should have removed the entry and the printer from the registry)
Leave the printer turned on and the USB cable connected directly to the computer and the printer's power cord directly into a wall outlet.
How do I get into Windows Device Manager?
Here is a document for Identifying problems in Windows Device Manager.
Check to see if there are any hardware driver conflicts, you might see a ! mark or a red x beside a device with a conflict or unknown device, look under universal serial bus controllers, look for USB printing support or mass storage device, delete the entry by right clicking and select uninstall, OK.
Let me know how it was listed. (screen shots welcome)
If this is a Laptop then check the power management settings.
Access the device manager. Windows 8-How do I access the Device Manager.
Select universal serial bus controllers from the list, for each USB root hub, right click and left click on properties, for power management remove the check mark for "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". It allows the computer to limit or turn off power for this device.
Disconnect the USB, run the full uninstall and reinstall the printer software again.
If you need further assistance, let me know.
    Have a nice day!
    Thank You.

  • SB04100 Sound Blaster Card not working after computer rebuild

=SB0400 Sound Blaster Card not working after computer rebuildZ I did a full disk format and reinstall for a friend on a Dimension 3000, running XP SP3. There is no sound at all. Speakers are good, tested on another system. Model number on the back of the sound card is SB0400, so I assume this is an older 24 bit PCI SoundBlaster card. Although I reinstalled all drivers from Dell, I found no drivers for this. The Creative site has no listing for this model.
Computer does not seem to recognize the card. Have not opened the box yet but I assume if I were to remove and then reinstall the card it would be recognized (?) I then have to find an SB0400 driver.
Does anyone know where I can find an SB0400 driver ? Does the strategy of pulling and reinstalling the card make sense ? (I have really avoided tampering with any of the hardware on this box -- since it is not mine.)

Re: SB0400 Sound Blaster Card not working after computer rebuild? Thanks much for your response. Problem solved for now. I removed the board and then reinserted it, after which I was able to download the drivers directly. Some of my difficulty with this whole process has been ) I didn't know there was no working speaker in the computer and 2) I apparently misunderstood the BIOS settings for this. I re-set it up as an add-on board during the troubleshooting process. After loading the driver, I went back to the original setting (don't recall what it was but it was for integrated sound). The setting for integrated sound works fine, with external speakers and the new 24 bit driver. Still some noise (popping and static) but this board shares the bus with 2 other cards one of which is a wireless network card. May be a PCI latency issue but I'm reluctant to change that because the network card is a bit shaky anyway.
Everything works for now -- I'll be glad to get this particular computer out of my house !

  • Fingerprint Reader not working after windows password reset

    Hi There
I was using windows login (single admin user) and fingerprint reader to login to my Thinkpad T510. Yesterday night I changed windows password and I didn't update finger print. Unfortunately I am not able to login when I tried to login using windows login today, I forgot the password and when I tried finger print reader it is just throwing error.
Why finger print is not working after windows password reset? What should I do to login?
    Help would be appreciated!!

I just called the tech support just now? I just asked the 'why the finger print reader not recognizing the finger print after changing windows password?', and he gave the following answers
    1. You should change fingerprint while changing windows password.  I don't understand the reason behind it, btw is this true?
    2. We can't do anything for this issue.

  • Beats Audio Control Panel software not working after Windows 10 upgrade.

Beats Audio Control Panel software not working after Windows 10 upgrade.  the Beats sound enhancement is useless in WIndows 10. When opening the Windows 10 sound properties  I'm getting this box message: Auido enhancement problem Windows has detected the audio enhancement for the following device are causing problems: Speakers / Headphones (IDT High Definition Audio Codec) Woud you like to disable driver enhancement for this device?  IDT High Definition Audio CodecBeats Audio Control Panel version6.10.6491.02013.11.2009:43:18 Please provide some kind of fix for this?

Well, it has been a long road on the Win 10 upgrade. At first I got the same error message as above, but after deleting the Dolby Advanced Audio v2 in Win 10 using Control Panel Programs and Features and rebooting, I got into the continual BSOD upon reboot. Here are the steps I took to at least get stable on Windows 10. First, I rolled back to Windows 8.1 using the advanced feature in the BSOD recovery options. Once back in Win 8.1, I deleted the Dolby Advanced Audio v2 using Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. Then I downloaded the Win 10 update and re-installed it. Once that completed, I updated the Intel Graphics driver under the display adapters (on my G780 it is an Intel HD Graphics 4000, and the driver can be found at  https://downloadcenter.intel.com/). Currently I am running version 10.18.10.4252 for my machine. Then, under the Device Manager, I updated the Conexant SmartAudio HD driver under the Sound, video, and game controllers. That driver is currently at 8.66.4.50 and was automatically downloaded from the web when I requested to update driver.  I also changed several others settings such as Notify to schedule restart after updates are installed instead of automatic (under Settings --> Update & Security --> Advanced Options) and Do you want Windows to download driver software and realistic icons for your devices? --> No, let me choose what to do, never install driver software from Windows Update.  After that, I shut down the machine, waited a moment and booted back up. I have no idea why this helped or if it is overkill, but I am stable and running without a fear of rebooting now. Hope this helps if someone else is having this same issue.

  • Compaq Presario CQ62 DVD not working after Windows 7 automatic install of upgrades

The DVD in my Compaq CQ62 stopped working after Windows 7 automatically installed updates. The driver seems to be corrupted. When I open Device Manager, the DVD comes up as hp DVD RW AD-7701H SATA CdRom Device and the device status displays...A driver (service) for this device has been disabled.  An alternate driver may be providing this functionality. (Code 32).. There are two drivers installed--cdrom.sys from Microsoft,  File Version 6.1.7600.16385(win7_rtm.090713-1255) and PxHlpa64.sys File Version 2.03.32a from Sonic Solutions. If anyone knows the link to download the new driver or how to resolve this problem please let me know.

We are not sure what might have caused this issue. You may try removing the affected filter drivers and check. This has helped few.
To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start , type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click regedit in the Programs list.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
    2. Locate, and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Caution There can be many instances of the registry subkey that is mentioned in step 2. You must make sure that you are in the appropriate registry subkey before modifying the UpperFilters and the LowerFilters values. To verify that you are in the appropriate registry subkey, make sure that the Default data value is DVD/CD-ROM and the Class data value is CDROM.
    3. In the right pane, right-click UpperFilters, and then click Delete.
    4. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the UpperFilters registry entry.
    5. In the right pane, right-click LowerFilters, and then click Delete.
    6. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the LowerFilters registry entry.
    7. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.
Note After you remove the UpperFilters registry entry and the LowerFilters registry entry, you may lose functionality in certain programs such as CD recording programs. In this scenario, you must reinstall any affected programs.

  • T43 Touch Pad not working after Window 7 installation.

The Touch Pad on my T43 is not working with Window 7. I have tried several drivers without success; any suggestions??
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Did you try to install system update 4.0 to get all the correct drivers?
You can also enable/disable the touchpad in BIOS so you could doublecheck it's actually enabled. You can also enable/disable touchpad by going into the control panel, mouse and the Ultranav tab if you have the correct driver installed. Another options is to press Fn-F8 to enable/disable touchpad, but this one also require some drivers and software from Lenovo to work.

It's known that installing Windows from an external DVD drive on a Mid 2013 MacBook Air causes that the keyboard doesn't work after finishing the installation. The fix is to install Windows by using a USB drive. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4599

  • HP G62 touchpad scroll not working after Windows 10 update

Hello, As many, I am having a problem with my touchpad scroll. It stopped working after upgrade to Windows 10.  I have an HP G62 Laptop and the touchpad listed is Synaptics PS-2 port.  Can you please provide information on how to fix? Best,

Hi there ,  Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome! This is a great site to get answers and ask questions. I have read your post on the HP Support Forums. I understand that your TouchPad is not working correctly since you upgraded to Windows 10.  I did some research and came up with a couple different documents that may help you with the TouchPad.
     1. HP Notebook PCs - Using the TouchPad or ClickPad (Windows 10)). 2. Using and Troubleshooting the TouchPad or ClickPad (Windows 8): You can customize and adjust how you scroll using one finger or two fingers and how the TouchPad or ClickPad responds to gestures near the edge. Here is a link to the HP Support Assistant if you need it. Just download and run the application and it will help with the software and drivers on your system that need updating for Windows 10. The Windows 10 drivers will become available on the HP Drivers and Downloads Page for your product as they become available to HP. There are some drivers available there currently.  Have a great day!
