SATA on KT4 ULTRA (MS6590)

Hello,
Can anybody help me tyo install a SATA HD.
what have to do to my mobo works with a new SATA HD?
i just plugged a new sata Hd in a KT4 ultra (MS-6590)  but the bios didn't saw it.

Hello.
Make sure the Promise 20376 chip is enabled.
The BIOS will never see the sata drive.
Once the BIOS screen has finished detecting the IDE drives, the next screen will show the sata drive.
Then to install windows XP, boot from the CD and press F6.
To use the floppy disk.

  • KT4 Ultra and SATA

I have a KT4 Ultra that supports SATA Raid and Im looking at getting a new HDD. CAn I run my old PATA HDD with a SATA HDD without it being in raid format or do the disk have to be in a raid format.

    Hey guys, how about this:
MSI KT4 Ultra SR, Win2000, PDC 20376 Promise Serial ATA chip on board.  WD 40gig IDE hd as primary on IDE 1.  Attached a Maxtor 120gig SATA to the Serial ATA 1 connector. While booting did NOT setup an array.  Windows 2000 in Disk Management under Device Manager/Disk Drives has now two folders, one for the WD and one that says SCSI Disk Device.  It's also also recognized under System Information/Components/Storage as SCSI controlled by the Fast Track 376 controller.   Is this a proper way to setup the serial Maxtor as an extra single drive in the system attached to the Serial interface?  Is this even possbile?  My problem is that while the drive is recognized as a SCSI disk device as described above, it is NOT seen under Disk Management as a new unformatted drive with a new letter.  Assuming the above setup is correct, how do I format the drive so Windows can use it?  Any help will be greatly appreciated, thank you.

  • Error detecting promise sata controller on kt4 ultra

    Hello,
I've searched the forum and "the rest" of the internet without finding a solution to my problem.
The problem is: Normally when you boot the kt4-ultra you will have a message saying "FastTrack 376(tm) Bios version 1.00.0.18(c)2002-2005 Promise Technology, Inc." and then either No drive attached to FastTrack Controller, The BIOS is not installed or information about your HDD configuration.
In my case sometimes without any reasonable explaination my computer won't detect the promise fasttrak controller AT ALL! It just jumps right over it, as it didn't excists. This is very strange since it's enabled in the BÌOS settings and it could be detected at the next reboot, or in many cases it wont be detected again for several days
As far as I can see it has nothing to do with the harddrives connected to it, as it happens anyway either with a SATA disk connected, IDE disk or no disks at all....
If anyone could help me out with this problem I'll be very gratefull!

I've litary tried every possible combination. The problem remains even with no disks or CD/DVD drives installed on the Fasttrak controller or IDE 1/2. Sometimes the controller is detected, sometimes not.
I should point out that if the controller is detected it always find my HDD who's connected to it and it works fine in Windows. But if it's not detected Windows will find a new hardware and try to install drivers to it, but it won't work cause the hardware is reporting an error and Windows will ofcourse not find a disk....

What operative system do you have? On a quick search I found mostly linux related problems, though I was not too thorough.
I have Windows XP, but I don't think it matters what OS i'm running.
On the searched I've done Im only finding Linux and compability related problems...
I've had this problem for over 6 months now and I'm getting a BIT tired the shitty controller....

  • KT4 Ultra + Sata

    Hi there,
Got rather strange problem that came up after i had some heavy file accessing in lan movin numerous files sizing from 600mb to 2gb.
i have system which has system drive on ide raid cable. 2 regular ide drives on primary ide, one burner on secondary ide and 2 serial ata drives Seagate 160gb.
I've had this system runnin on windows xp pro past year now, up 24/7 and only rebootin it for updates and such, but basically its up months straight.
well, i went to lan-party and took my machine there ofcourse. everything worked ok there the first day but on the second windows decided to lost SATA drives from the system, well i booted, promise controller showed the drives on bootup ok and i thought no big deal, but then when i got windows up it gave "Delayed Write Failed" and only showed one of the SATA drives (other ide drives were visible)
first i thought that the other drive had died (these things happens) and shutted the machine down, i took the power cable and sata cable out from that drive and started again. much to my amaze when windows booted up it gave the same error message and couldnt find the drive that was visible last time. at that point i thought it might be motheboard gone bad. Anyway, i took both sata drives offline for the duration of the lan-party since i woudn't want to think it there.
now I've searched web for solution for similar problems, found some, but those has been related either fresh install of winxp or installing drivers or modifying cache settings etc. In my case, the machine has been up and running over a year and last thing i updated was some drivers a month ago.
if it were only one drive doing this i would simply change it at work and hopefully begone with it, but 2 identical drives bought at different times and installed at different times can't brake down at the same time, (well allright Mr.Murphy has been evil to me before but still ).
Strange thing also is that i can use both drives short amount of time, i can access all the files ok and nothing seems to be corrupt yet. both drives also makes sound that is like they're shutting down and then restarting. which would suggests that they have gone bad but then again 2 drives at same time.. grr..
I was thinkin that if the PSU has gone bad it might do this but if its that's the case, shouldn't then all the drives shutdown and restart..
i can test with another PSU but not until few days until i get back to work.
    phew.. went kinda long..
    ps: exact system config: Kt4 ultra bfisr, Athlon 2400xp, 2x256mb(ddr333), 1x512mb(ddr333), 40gb seagate(ide), 60gb ibm(ide), 80gb seagate(ide), msi dvd+-burner(4x), 2x160gb seagate(sata), Radeon 9800pro, Live player 5.1, Sirtech 360W PSU, 3com 10/100, buffalo 10/100.

  • KT4 ULTRA FISR SATA Problem

I really need some help here. I have a KT4 Ultra board with SATA Interface and a brand new Seagate Barracuda 120 GB. On to the problem .. when i booted up the computer for the first time, it detected my disc. After that .. i was testing som different settings in the BIOS .. and had to clear the CMOS Now .. it won´t detect the drive at all. It says something about "No drive attached to the FastTrak controller. Bios not installed/loaded" I have installed all drivers and stuff that came with the board but no luck. Is the driver loaded into the BIOS from the beginning or? How do i get the d*amn board to detect it again? I can´t even enter the bios setup (for the SATA controller.. ctrl+f) So .. i can´t really do .
    Help!

It says jumper (Factory only) so i don´t think u are supposed to jumper it. It´s master by default. At least that´s what seagate claims =) Or?

  • MSI KT4-ULTRA & WD SATA RAPTOR

I have this KT4-Ultra with Promise SATA controller onboard and until now I did not know if it works well.
Today i've bought the SATA hdd from WesternDigital - the Raptor, and i'm very unsatisfied by the performance.
I've got only 58mbps burst speed and 48mbps medium on HD Tach. And i know that this is not ok. It should be far better I've readed all the reviews.
The drive is conected in a 1+0 Stripe Array. I'm using the latest driver for the controller. I had trouble before with this mainboard [thread] and i think it has something to do with the BIOS.
This i found it to be iritating - the HDD cost a lot more than the mainboard(wich is expensive too). I still think that the mainboard is the problem.

There are no master or slave or cable select settings on SATA drives as there can be only one SATA drive per cable/channel.  The jumpers on the Raptor set the power management mode of the drive on spinup.

  • SATA driver for KT4 Ultra

Could someone please point me in the direction of the SATA controller drivers for the KT4 Ultra(MS6950 I believe) mobo?
I downloaded what I thought were the correct ones but apparently I was wrong.
    Thanks for you help!

    Hello.

Move down the list, I think it may be the second one.

  • KT4 Ultra FISR Single SATA drive only

I have the KT4 Ultra FISR and just purchased a Seagate 160GB SATA drive.
Can I use this as my only drive?
Do I simply need to set the SATA as my first boot device?

Sadly you will need the sata drivers. You should have your drivers floppy close when you start your windows setup, and when it tells you Press F2 to install third party controllers.. you must press it.
      Some steps before:
First connect your SATA drive. Go into bios at Integrated Peripherals/OnBoard PCI Controller and enable Serial ATA Controller. After reboot you should see the FastTrack Bios - press Control-F and get into FastBuild Configuration Utility. Then chose Define Array, chose 16k stripe, save settings. Now use some software like Partition Magic to partitionate the SATA HDD. the rest will be done by the windows setup.
About your other question, is safe to keep the old HDD, some say better to use it on the IDE2 connector on the mobo and to disable from bios IDE1. I tryed and I didn't notice any diference.

  • KT4 Ultra (6590) need update of the Promise SATA RAID Controller PDC20376

The last Bios update AMI 1.4 for the KT4 Ultra (6590) have built in the bios version 1.00.0.18 for the PDC20376 (Promise 376).
    I can configure 2 maxtor (6E040T0) sata1 in a raid0 array and it works under WinXP SP3,
but the 2 drives are working in UDMA5 according to the FastBuild Utility when the motherboard specifications talks about 150Mb (SATA1).
It's not an OS problem because the FastBuild Utility at Bios startup show the UDMA5 mode for HDD.
It's not a Maxtor 6E040T0 (SATA1) problem because have no jumper to set.
The Promise support center don't provide support for built in raid controller but the responce was that it's related to a known bios issue of the controller, so i have to update.
For the last Bios version for the S150 TX4 controller look at:
    http://promise.com/support/download/download2_eng.asp?productId=108&category=all&os=100&go=GO
It's impossible to update the bios with the promise tool because the controller is integrated in the motherboard.
I read for example than on the motherboard K7N2 Delta-ILSR the bios version of the Promise 376 controller is 1.00.0.21:
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=92756.msg665966#msg665966
I think the only solution is a modding bios, where i have to replace only the Promise controller bios but:
    1) The tool amibcp.exe can't open the A6590VMS.140 AMI bios (renamed .rom), i don't know why!!!
    2) What promise controller bios rom file is good?
Can anyone out there help . . . please ?

This is my results compared to my other UDMA6 HDD on IDE1, HDTach long bench stop with "Read Error" and only quick bench works.
The version of the Controller driver under WinXP-SP3 is 1.0.1.29 and I configured the driver in the PAM Utility with:
"Driver Write Cache" enabled and "Write Back" as cache settings (The 2 Maxtor SATA1 in RAID have 2MB of cache, but i don't know How many cache have the controller!!).
The Burst Speed is too strange!!! quick bench error?
I made it so your image is clickable.

  • KT4 Ultra FISR and WD Raptor 74GB problems

    MSI KT4 Ultra FISR - MS6590
    Western Digital Raptor 74GB 10,000rpm - WD740
Is it possible on the MS6590 to have a SATA drive on Ser1 but nothing on EIDE or Ser2? The reason I ask is that, I cannot get the drive to show in BIOS under "Standard CMOS". Thanks any help is appreciated.

  • KT4 Ultra: Where is my LAN?

1000mbit Broadcom on-board LAN is no more available on my KT4-Ultra FISR motherboard! It disappeared from OS and from BIOS also!!! I have it for month, I don't want to buy another one while having this in RMA process :( I just did it with Gigabyte GA-7VAXP Ultra which I've selled as second hand, because I prefered MSI.
You know, Integrated peripherals in BIOS doesn't include LAN now. SATA, Audio, and Firewire are still present.
One more thing to mention: can I plug a harddisk to one of extra connectors (SATA, IDE3) in stand-alone mode? It seems that I *must* set-up a RAID (even with one drive) once I attach a new disk to such connector. This was a shock to me. I hoped I can just buy new SATA drive and connect it normally or use IDE3 for "portable" harddisks... Maybe I did a mistake with selling feature-packed Gigabyte board, because it got 4 IDE connectors, 2 SATA connectors and 2 independent RAIDs!! As I know from my previous Gigabyte mobo, there is a jumper (or maybe a settings in BIOS nowadays) to make RAID chip act like a normal IDE controller. I'd like to switch it on my MSI board!
However, MSI boards are faster and less problematic, so I want to stay with this brand.

by the way I really don't understand what should I do with those metallic clips. Should I remove them and burn the mobo afterwards? This seems to me to be a complete BS, I hope you have 1+ experience with this issue. I cannot imagine how can a metallic stick, separated from mobo's layout by 2mm ring, have any impact.

  • KT4 Ultra and FastTrak 376 issues.

I recently purchased a KT4 Ultra and installed it on me computer. Everythings fine, it boots and the bios recognises my IDE devices. It won't allow me to enter the bios though and it just sits there with the screen displaying this.
FastTrak 376 (tm) BIOS Version 1.00.0.18

    Scanning IDE drives
any help would be greatly appreciated
    thx alot )

NEVER HAPPENED TO ME. TRY DISCONNECTING ALL IDE DEVICES, CLEAR THE CMOS AND PRESS DEL BEFORE THE PROMISE BIOS LOADS.
MAYBE YOU'LL GET INSIDE TO DEACTIVATE IT FROM LOADING AT INTEGRATED PERIPHERALS - ONBOARD PCI CONTROLLER - SEARIAL ATA CONTROLLER.
DO YOU HAVE AN SATA HDD? YOU COULD USE ONE FOR TRYING TO SETUP AN ARRAY IN THE PROMISE BIOS (BY PRESSING CTRL+F AND THEN CHOOSE THE AUTO CONFIGURATION). AFTER THAT MAYBE YOU CAN ENTER THE BIOS.
YOU CAN ALSO TRY TO FIND AN MODDED BIOS FOR THE KT4-ULTRA THAT DOES NOT LOAD THE PROMISE SATA BIOS BY DEFAULT.

  • Secondary IDE slows down SATA on KT4

I have two SATA drives as a striped array on the RAID controller of my KT4 ultra.
    Also:
DVD ROM as master on primary IDE
DVD writer as master on secondary IDE
Windows XP takes about 5 minutes to boot unless I disable the secondary IDE in the BIOS. Then it takes seconds to boot.
I swapped the DVD and writer but it's the same.
I just get the XP logo hanging there for ages.
All devices show OK in device manager, and work fine. I have done a fresh XP install with lates drivers.
Should I put both on the primary??

I have not tried both on the same cable as they worked when I had a normal hard drive on IDE0.
I thought the rule was always to put them on a differant IDE channel if poss.
Any other thoughts, as I did not want to have both on same channel.

  • Kt4 ultra bios and raid function

i am using the kt4 ultra motherboard (bluetooth ready and SATA), when i go to the integrated peripherals, onboard pci controller i can only enable/disable the audio controller....
where am i supposed to enable/disable the raid controller?? is there a jumper i am missing on the board?
    thanks in advance,
    brian

Are you sure you have a KT4 ultra with the Serial ATA/RAID controller option? There are several versions of the motherboard, all doesn't include the PDC20376 SATA/RAID controller, please check if you can find the chip on your mobo. The controller is enabled/disabled under Integrated Peripherals->OnBoard PCI Controller
    ->Serial ATA controller.
