Sata on Super Drive.. yummy

I just wondering new macbook pro using sata connector for super drive.. really want to pull out the super drive and replace another another 500GB HDD for it while primary HDD will use SSD just for OS. Might use it for Time Machine.. or 320GB 7200RPM * 2 for raid ?

Am I reading your signature correctly - 32GB SSD? If so, my first recommendation is to look at a bigger SSD drive. Second, external storage (especially if you're looking to use it for Time Machine).
Or better still, use Time Capsule. We've got one in our loft, the 500GB handles backups on three different machines without using wires, and does a fine job as a wireless router. We even plugged an external USB drive (our Final Cut archives) and a laser printer using a USB hub (Time Capsule only has one USB port in back). When the computer's not connected to that network (for example, at another office or traveling around), Time Machine just waits patiently until the computer's back home, and then resumes its quiet little task of keeping all our data safe.
I don't believe anyone currently makes a carrier/connector combo for swapping the SuperDrive for a hard disk on the unibody machines. I'm willing to be you'll see product announcements at MacWorld in January.

I currently have a mbp 2.3 gighuz intel core 7 16 gig of ram with two internal hard drives ( took super drive out) which for a video editor like myself is a dream I can edit video anywhere, my question can I order a new mbp with 2 internal flash drives?

I wouldn't think so because the newer ones with Retina displays don't have an internal SuperDrive that can be replaced. Therefore the newer logic boards wouldn't have the two SATA/SATA Express connections on the logic board.
At least that was the case as of 2012. I've seen newer ones and they also don't have a SuperDrive.

  • Replacing super drive with SSD

    Hi everyone,
My iMac is getting old (2.8GHz Core 2 Duo).
I'm thinking to replace a super drive with 240GB SSD (will install OS and Apps). I will still use my internal SATA drive for data and files.
240GB SSD > OS and Applications
500GB SATA > all data and files
I'd like to know if I get significant speed advantage??? Anybody has similar configuration? How is it? Is it worth to do?
Also I'm thinking to upgrade my MBP same way..
    Thanks!

Well first off it voids your AppleCare/warranty as a unauthorized change, but if you don't care then most have preferred placing the SSD where the hard drive is and moving the hard drive to where the Superdrive is, placing the Superdrive in a external encloses.
SSD made to be the boot/OS/applications/bare bone user drive for speed and the hard drive for large storage (as SSD's can wear out)
You won't be able to boot off the external Superdrive or install Windows from it according to reports I read.
If you contact Bmer art MacOwnersSupportGroup

He has a lot of experience and did it himself so he can teach you how it's done, the best SSD to use, cloning your drive and so forth.

  • Mac Pro Super Drives Stuck Closed

Hi there, I've got an odd problem affecting both my MacPro's super drives. They're original factory super drives and recently they've both stopped opening.
To clarify, it's nothing to do with the flip down door mechanism, the drives themselves will not open. They respond to both manual and eject key requests whiring first open, and then eventually closed, but unless you insert a pin into the release port they both fail to 'unlatch' themselves from the closed position. Once manually unlatched they'll slide open and closed under their own power, and the drives themselves both work fine. But without fail you have to physically unlatch them to actually get a disk in or out.
So it's not the platter motor, there's nothing software related here, and it's nothing to do with the mac case itself as they exhibit this behaviour when removed from the housing.
Anyone got tips on fixing the 'latch' mechanism?
    Ev.

Mac pro 2008 or older? (uses IDE/ATA drives and 40-pin cables)
Or 2009 and newer? (uses SATA drives and compact cables)
Have you changed anything or added any software that might have anything to do with DVD readers?

  • Can i install sata III hard drive?

Hi, i've an iMac G5 20" iSight with an intel core duo 2ghz. I would like to know if  i can install a sata III hard drive like 128GB Crucial m4 2.5" SSD.
    Thx a lot.

First, you do not have an iMac G5. G5s are PPC machines, but yours is an Intel model.
You can install a SATA III drive but I would not spend the money since your model only supports SATA I or SATA II depending on which model you have. I would also be careful about using Crucial SSDs because they may not all work in a Mac. I would get your SSD at OWC instead. You will find their equivalent product for SATA I or SATA II here. I have two of these drives, and they are excellent.

  • USB external Super Drive not recognized by iMac

Bought a new USB external Super Drive a few days ago (from Apple shop).
Plugged into my iMac 21.5", late 2013, and the iMac does not seem to want to recognise it.
Checked Finder and necessary boxes ticked up to show on Desktop, also does not show through remote devices.
Any help would be appreciated. Not a techie and 90 miles from my Apple shop. Not even sure I have filled the dam request in correctly (sorry).

Oddjob, the optical drive itself never shows up on the desktop,. What happens when you insert a disc? If a disc doesn't show up first check your connection. Try resetting the SMC Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) - Apple Support and PRAM How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support
There's also the possibility that the drive is bad.

  • A DVD external super drive on a Macbook-pro 15', any chance to work?

Hey! I bought a macbook-pro 15’ in 2009 which does generally well. Nevertheless it has a problem concerning the DVD internal drive. It doesn’t read   anymore and I have tried to clean with no effect. Few days ago I bought an external USB super drive from Apple store. I did so because I did not like to give my computer back for service, when I need it all the time for my work. I thought with that I would have solved my problem. Now I realized that things are not so easy, I must have made a mistake. Macbook-pro 15’ is not supposed to be connected to an external USB super drive. Can I still do something to make it work? Thanks

Apple designs external Superdrive to only work with computers that shipped without an optical frive. Why don't you save yourself much grief & return it. Then purchase any USB drive you want, just not a Superdrive. Thousands on the market & they will work just fine with your computer.

  • Super drive won't recognize audio CDs but will burn

Anything I can do about this?
When Audio CDs are inserted I will hear the drive attempting to load through several cycles then spit it out. Tried multiple CDs and CDs do work in CD player. ALL are original audio CDs not copies, cloned or burned. ALL are clean.
BLANK CDs will seat and allow me to burn through iTunes.
ALL DVDs load and play fine.
I feel like this suddenly happened but can't remember the last time I inserted an audio CD. I completely reformated (clean install) my HD last Thanksgiving, updated all drivers and programs I could find. (not sure about firmware for super drive but I think I found it was the lastest) I swear the CD ROM worked.
Got a new iPod at Christmas and it works fine. Itunes works fine!
Original Mac Mini and updated SuperDrive..... Info here:
I replaced original CD ROM drive with Super Drive about 4 years ago. There has never been a hardware issue. Clean install fixed random CD burn problem.
    Super Drive:
    PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K06:
    Model: PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K06
    Revision: 1.01
    Detachable Drive: No
    Protocol: ATAPI
    Unit Number: 1
    Socket Type: Internal
    Machine Name: Mac mini
    Machine Model: PowerMac10,1
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (1.2)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 1.42 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 1 GB
    Bus Speed: 167 MHz

    Ditto for like 2 years.
I have the exact! same problem. A lot of people confuse similar drive problems with ours when diagnosing.
Here's what I have found out, although after 2 years, I haven't been able to completely fix it.
Something related to my login is corrupt or missing. If I log in under my wife's login, and insert the audio cd, everything is perfect. Then if I switch back to my login, everything is perfect for again. However every cd must still be inserted under her login.
I really with this additional post will help somebody who has had this actually answer. It isn't a drive problem, or itunes problem.... and clearly a complete re install of osx isn't necessary.

  • How can I add A second Apple Super Drive to my Mac?

My Imac won't see the second super drive fitted. Can this be done?

Is it check in the box that says CDs, DVDs, iPhods? If the box is checked and it still can't be seen do a SMC reset.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Can I run 4 super drives with my Mac Mini Server

I have Lion Server downloaded to my Mac Mini (set up as a TV server) and would like to be able to access the 4 USB Super Drive ports via other Mac Mini's in other rooms, 2 Apple TV's if possibe through Apple TV software and maybe Macbook Pro via AirPlay. Are these things possible. The Mac Mini Server is the Best Home television distribution network. Cheaper hardware and fast internet connection based on devices. The above is my goal.
    My individual questions...
Can I place 4 Super Drives in the 4 USB slots and run them?
What is the most effiecent way to be able to server those drives on ONLY my Apple Network (other Mac Mini and 2 Apple TV's)
Can I access multiple drives at once from different devices on my Apple Network?
Can I restrict access to teen and child users based on the TV Rating displayed on DVD in Super Drive? (ex: iTunes recognizes CD's by times of songs and digital fingerprint when I input my Store bought CD or adds it to the Database if its a new title.)
    These would help so much!
    Thanks,
    Stefan
Have any questions on how to turn your Mac into a home Multimedia System, ask.

    no
a dvd drive can never be shared over a network in order to play the dvd drives content
the dvd encryption makes this imposible
you have to rip (which is illegal) each dvd disc to a computer in order to do what you wish to do
and it's not an apple thing it's the case no matter which computer you own

  • I can't burn a dvd using any method, Idvd tells me that my super drive is missing, dvd studio pro quits when i click burn and disk utility keeps spitting the disk out when i click burn and enter the disk??? how do i repair my superdrive for imac

I can't burn a dvd using any method, idvd tells me that my super drive is missing, dvd studio pro quits when i click burn and disk utility keeps spitting the disk out when I click burn and enter the disk??? how do i repair my superdrive for imac, or how do I do whatever I need to do to get it working: I have already tried using a lens cleaning cd and also restored my nvram or something i forget what it was called but i restarted my computer holding down  command+optoion+p+r and still nothing???
Free solutions are the best, although if I have to pay I will, I would prefer to not have to buy an external burner if possible and already know that is an option so please don't give me that answer... thank you for any help you can give

Unless your iMac is still covered by AppleCare, get an external DVD burner.
You can get perfectly good ones from Amazon for less than $40.

  • Super drive no longer likes my discs

whether I insert a music cd or dvd, my super drive growls 3 times then spits out the disc. Any ideas? Need more info? Thanks.

    From the top down:
neither DU or console do anything when I insert the disc.
I had updated to 10.4.11 awhile back and did the permission thing both before and after at that time. I also repaired permissions this time (twenty minutes ago), but no help for the super drive.
The article was no help - disc is clean and flat, inserts fully, ejects when asked to, just goes "growl, growl, growl" then ejects. Yes, I've tried more than 1 disc.
I checked for any software updates, only quicktime, itunes and a security update. Didn't see anything about firmware.

  • IBook G4 will not recognize Super Drive

There is a DVD stuck in my optical Super Drive. The drive now is no longer recognized in the system profiler either. There is no noise at all coming from the drive on startup or when an eject is attempted. This is a second-hand iBook so unfortunately i don't have any other information as the disc was stuck in the drive on purchase.

If a problem occurs when Applecare is in effect, Apple will honor the warranty until the problem is fixed, even if the Applecare expires in the meantime. A product specialist at Apple told me this.
You need to contact Apple and tell them that the replacement of the hard drive did not solve the problem, and that the hard drive is still not being recognized. It's possible that the new hard drive is bad, but it's also possible that the hard drive cable was not securely plugged into the logic board and that it has worked loose. Or there could even be a logic board problem that is keeping the hard drive from being recognized. But it's Apple's problem to sort out.
    Good luck!
