SATA PCI card in powermac, which one?

Im looking for a SATA PCI card for a power mac and was wondering what is the cheapest option can I use any card or just ones specifically made for mac?
Any help appreciated.

A controller card plugs directly into the computer's hardware. An adapter lets you plug a SATA drive into another interface which in turn plugs into the computer. I don't have experience with either but I suspect the controller would be faster since the adapter would be limited by the speed and maybe even drive size limitations (if such) for whatever interface you were using. It depends upon the computer. For which kind are you thinking of buying one?

  • LG GGC-H20L with Sonnet Tempo Sata Pci Card into Powermac G5

    Hello dear Community.
I have a LG GGC-H20L HD-DVD/Blu Ray Drive. And a Sonnet Tempo SATA PCI Card.
The Problem is, that the Computer cant find the LG GGC-H20L Drive. The Sonnet Tempo Card it find. Broke i drivers? And where i can get it?
Can one of you Help me?

    Nokiman
I made sure there was a good 'thunk' as it slotted in to the PCI slot everytime I installed it, I wiggled it to make sure, I applied reasonable pressure to make sure it was seated correctly, etc. I tried everything, short of using a hammer! Still no joy. I have a PCI firewire card which works perfectly in all slots.
I've sent it back to the supplier for a replacement/upgrade to the Tempo-X 4+4.
    Thanks for the tips.

  • Bought wrong e-SATA PCI Card and seek advice on the right one to buy

I have a MacPro bought in 2006 with Intel Processor but still having the old MAC OS X 10.4.11 Tiger version.
    I bought an e-SATA PCI card : http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/MXPCIE6GS2/
But I realised first that I could not insert it. The distance between the slots in the mother board and the external exit whole to fix the card and not compatible (card too short). Furthermore the card specs says that it requires max OS 5 version or later.
So what do you recommend that would go physically in the slot and at the same time fitting with my MAC OS 4.11 version ? This card is to be used to connect external drives suing e-SATA connections.

Nothing wrong with using that card in your Mac Pro. The card will fit in your MP's slots, so if you are unable to seat it then you aren't doing something correctly. The specs say the card is backward compatible with PCI-e 1.0 slots.
You will have to upgrade your OS to the requisite version. Given the cost of Leopard you may wish to instead upgrade to Snow Leopard.

  • Real Life SATA-PCI speed of PowerMac G4s

I see people on the web talking about what super speeds they get from their SATA Drives hooked up to SATA-PCI-Cards (Sonnet, Firmtek, Acard, doesn't matter) in their G4s.
Since I only get 33-39MB/s depending on what drive I use, I suspect they just use benchmark tools or I am an idiot. (copying from one drive to another both hanging on the same PCI-Card).
Please, can someone use a real file and copy it manually from one SATA-Drive to another and use a "stop watch" and calculate the file size through the time elapsed in seconds.
It does not matter, if I use a file of 5GB, 20GB or files of 800GB. No matter which SATA-PCI card I use (have kept me a Sonnet and a Macally). No matter if both are installed or just one.
    Would really appreciate your help.

    @ all:
First thank you, all! You make me confident, that it is not me making a mistake somewhere (I can't imagine what mistake anyway since it is plug and play. But people elsewhere like to point out, that the user is the biggest source of mistakes).
What I ask myself again is:
why then, are people claiming that they get 100MB/s speeds on the same PowerMac G4 Sawtooth ("AGP", with 100MHz-BUS)? I trust Japamac, that he did do tests, but what really comes to mind is, that it must be the benchmark utilities (Quickbench and ALA) making people think they have 100MB/s speeds on a theoretical SATA-150MB connection.
Btw. I have tried the 500MHz stock CPU, a Sonnet 7447 2x1,8GHz and a Sonnet 1x1,2GHz 7455, I could see that the 500MHz CPU is overal 5MB slower, when processing large files. 5MB is not siginficant, I know.
I am not saying, that a Dual 1,8GHz is making everything different and neglecting what you said, when you just transfer files and I see that the CPU is somehow oversized on a 100MHz FSB. Of course people swear their Upgrade CPUs do much. I guess they really roll out their advantages in let's say converting DV-files to another format. (I plan to test this the next weeks btw., also watching power consumption).
Thank you again. I hope Japamac says something on the topic, since he still posses his Sawtooth G4 and maybe he can reperform his test with a real file (other than "virtual" benchmarking). A pitty that there is no message function on this forum.
PS: on RAM usage, other than music authoring software and photoshop, RAM doesn't seem to be that big of a deal on a PowerMac. I watched activity monitor, while converting an iMovie-file to h.264 (took like 8 hours with the Dual 1,8GHz), the RAM was never filled over 512MB and I have 2GB installed. OS X is very nice to RAM, too it seems.

  • Sata PCI card

I have a G4 dual 450 and would like to install a sata pci card so I can use a raid subsystem for my company. Will this G4 support the sata PCI card?

Hi! The G4 can support a SATA card though check for bootability on RAID cards. I use a Sonnet Sata card and it is bootable but the one I use is not a raid card. Tom

  • Is there any SATA PCI card support G5?

since there is only 2 HDD bay inside the G5, and all of theres are full already, i'm planning to get 2 more HDD, can i just add a SATA PCI card, then simply just plug 2 more HDD with the PCI Card?

Also, you might want to look into port-multiplier solutions.
I have a PCI-X G5, so you may have different options, but I started out with a Firmtek Seritek 1VE4, with 4 external SATA connections. I have now exhausted those 4 connections, so I replaced it with a Lycom eSATA 4-port which supports multiplication (5 drives per port, for total of 20 drives)
MacGurus is very knowledgeable about the SATA expansion options for all desktop Macs.
You can get single-drive chassis, which often have eSATA, Firewire and/or USB ports, or go for a 4- or 5-tray enclosure, which often let you hotswap drives in and out.

  • SATA PCI Card reads Paralell now.

I have purchased and installed a Serial PCI Card that supposedly allows me to use a serial ATA hard drive. 7200 RPM, serail quickness all good things to want on my old Digital Audio. It does lalow me to see and use the newer serial hard drtive, BUT, the System Profiler registers it as a SCSI Parallel drive.
The drive itself is a Western Digital WDC WD2500JS-00N 250 gb's.
Did I purchase the wrong PCI Card or any idea of what is taking place here? Can't recall what the name of the card is or any tech data about it.
    thanx,

It is reporting as SCSI because it is designed to work with the SCSI disk driver software, not SATA drivers. It will run the drives at their full speed, but if the SATA drives have some functions that are not supported by SCSI, those functions will not be available. S.M.A.R.T. might be one of those functions. Does Disk Utility show S.M.A.R.T. status for those drives?

  • MBP 2010 Mavericks SATA PCI Card not working

    Hello there,
with Mountain Lion I had no problems with my LaCie SATA II ExpressCard 34, but after installing Mavericks this card is not working anymore.
    http://www.lacie.com/de/support/support_manifest.htm?id=10274
I contacted Lacie Support, they do not have an actual driver.
So I bought a Sonnett Tempo SATA Pro 6Gb ExpressCard/34 which should work with Mavericks.
Unfortunately my MBP from 2010 does not. Sonnett offers a workaround http://www.sonnettech.com/support/kb/kb.php?cat=466&expand=_a3_a1_a2&action=b778 #b778
After installing this I could use the card when I plugged it in AFTER systemstart. If the card is plugged in when the computer is started, the compter will not start at all. So, if I like to use an external drive as startvolume with this card, it is useless.
Does anybody have the same problem and any solution?
Will there be an update for Mavericks regarding this problem?
    Thanks for Feedback

I can't offer any solutions, my MBP doesn't have an Expresscard slot, but it seems like no one else has answered so I thought I'd offer a suggestion. Contact Other World Computing at Macsales.com. They specialize in Mac hardware and may be able to supply you with a card that works.
As for the "will there be an update" question, we're all just users here so we have no idea what Apple will do.

  • MDD with SATA PCI card, what is largest drive possible?

I have recently bought a Sonnet Tempo PCI SATA card for my MDD, is there a maximum size to the SATA HDD which I can attach to this card?
I want to use it mainly to store videos etc.

If the drive is to ever be bootable, 2TB is the largest partition that you can use.
Not sure what Sonnet has tested with that card, but the Firmtek controller that it carries will support 2 TB for sure.

  • Which one has least problems?

Looking at used g5's. Which has less problems: a dual core g5 or a dual processor G5? After reading the posts here, it seems the dual processors have more problems but would like to here it from experienced users. Upgrading from a g4 PB and will wait a bit before going intel. Kind of looking at a 2 ghz dual core. Not sure yet. Suggestions?
    tnks
    Randy

Well you don't want a dual 2.5-2.7, way too hot.
You do want a AGP video port because there is still the ATI 800xt for sale.
Not much in the way of PCI -X or Express options.
The Dual 1.8 and Dual 2's are a little old, being the first PowerMac G5's out, but at least with Dual Processors if one goes out you still have a machine that will work.
The Dual Cores have not as much bandwidth, sharing one Bus and a one memory controller, unlike Dual Processors which have one of each per processor. So in multi-tasking the Dual Processors should be a bit better, even though the Dual Cores will perform better on one task that utilizes both cores. Since not a whole lot of programs are multi-threaded yet the Dual Processors might be a better choice, depending if you multi-task or not.
The reason you see more Dual Processor problems is because there was huge demand for these machines when they first came out.
I would wait for the Dual Quad Intel Mac's and BlueRay DVD drives with DRM monitors and Lepoard to arrive before upgrading, as it will require a new investment in software/hardware upgrades.
I would get a Firmtek SATA PCI card and a Western Digital 150GB 10,000 RPM Raptor hooked to the SATA card for a boot/app/itunes/bare home drive and keep files on a file drive in new folders to keep up performance.
    http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/firmtek/1eve4/
Would get over 4 GB of RAM from Crucial as well as the X800xt video card from ATI while they are still selling it.
You'll have a decent sytem, it will perform well, 3D game all the latest games. Doom3, Quake 4, UT2004. Photoshop CS2 as well.
When the Intel stuff is ready then make the Dual Quad jump.
If you 3D game, let me know and I'll hook you up on how to add maps/updates to UT2004, lots of playing time killed in this game.
Plus I know some other great software you'll want perhaps.

    8.Problem Description:
Hello. I have a strange problem with my controllercard. I wrote this text to InnoVision suport and they send me files and bios updates for a whole week and it was still the same problem. And then i tried the card in an older computer and everything worked fine.
    I wrote
"Hello. I got some problems with my new controller card. I can find my new harddrive ,that's conected to the controller card, when iam inside windows and it's seems to be no problem. I can look on every seting on it and everywhere i look i can read "No problem". I Also did some test with the seatools programe and everything was fine. But when i schould copy files to it the coumputer start lagging after a few seconds and i cant do anything. After a while i can move the mouse around but the it laggs again. My computer is overclocked at the time but i have tried to use the harddrive when it's not clocked also. Also when im goin in to teh controlpanel and starts the setings for Sillicon Images sata controll and have music on my computer, the music laggs for a very very short moment. Something must be wrong and i can not find it."
It's still the same problem in my computer. The older computer had a MSI moderboard with a VIA chip and i have a nForce 3. InnoVison said i should talk to you about this problem. I have 3 harddrives but i use this controllercard because i want to have my computer overclocked and then i can't use 2 of the sata ports as i think you know.
I would be very thankful if you could help me with this problem.
    //Martin

I've used a noname SATA pci card (non raid) with SIL3112 on my neo2 without problems with 1C bios.
Think you may try with a disk lower than 48bitLBA need (137GB barrier), eg a 120GB disk
    Quote:
have the InnoVision EIO DM-8301 and had alot of problems using it with WD 160MB SATA drive.
I am using Intel 865 based MB with 2 original SATA channels. The original SATA channels are bootable.
I could not used the EIO card with 160G HDD. The whole setup is working only after I connected oine of my 120G Segate SATA HDD to the EIO Sata card.
I think this card do not properly support HDD above 120G.
    Please respond to: [email protected]
    http://www.devhardware.com/forums/storage-devices-80/sata-as-boot-20080-2.html
Btw: you have xp sp2 ?
48bitLBA is not enabled in the first version.
    http://www.48bitlba.com/winxp.htm
    Edit:
Here's another with complete different setup and same problems
    http://forum.tweakxp.com/forum/Topic212148-4-1.aspx
I doubt it has anything to do with your motherboard and/or bios.
Btw: I looked at innovision and their drivers in download area are very old.
Get the latest SIL3112 drivers for XP here:
    http://www.siliconimage.com/support/supportsearchresults.aspx?pid=63&cid=3&ctid=2&osid=4&
And remember 3112 is sata150 only , so it's not sure it will work with your drive at all .
Anyway it should be set to fixed sata1.5G with jumper - not certain the controller can autonegotiate
without trouble. You cannot have command queing enabled either , disk support only NCQ and controller TCQ
so having command queing set ON will cause major conflicts in data transfers.

  • M-Audio Audiophile 2496 PCI card installed, now computer will not turn off

I installed Audiophile 2496 card + "live lite 4" software and now my computer will not turn off. It goes through the motions, but than just reboots. I have to hold the start button to kill it. I also have a Firmtek SATA PCI card and a USB 2.0 PCI card. Is there some way to solve this short of pulling the card?

  • PCI Airport Cards - Which one?

As far as I can tell, these two cards are compatible with my MDD G4 1.25, and have the same functionality:
    [OWC Card|http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/MXP802NPCI>
    [eBay Card|http://cgi.ebay.com/PCI-Wireless-WiFi-Card-Mac-G3-G4-G5-Airport-802-11-b-gW0QQitemZ370316015253QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain2?hash=item56388df695]
The one offered at OWC is $40. plus shipping, and the one on eBay is $19. with free shipping.
Am I OK with the eBay one? I'm saving more than $20.
    thanks

Settled then, it's the OWC PCI card - and basically, I will then have Internet on both MDDs I use in my home studio, without having to run an Ethernet cable under rugs and through walls.
+What kind of base station and other wireless gear do you have+
So two airport cards aren't enough? Either you mean the DSL transmitter thing on my phone line (in the living room) and just a local (ethernet) network or, I'm guessing - a router or ethernet hub...no, I'm not equipped with those last two. So in other words, without them, I'm not looking at communicating with WiFi between two computers? I can also consult the support articles for help on that.
Thanks to BDAqua's response in another post, I got past a problem of sharing files by ethernet between two computers* - and that's my chief need at present. I just thought it would also be convenient to be able to retrieve files wirelessly as well . . .maybe when I get that other gear (?)
*which is to enter the username and password for the computer you're trying to access, not the one you're on.
    (with a reply from Japamac:)
+...I have an admin account on all my network machines, thus the name never changes.+
Which leads to the question, With two machines connected by ethernet, if I have the same name and password on both (at present, each is different), then I would not need to enter names and passwords each time I want to access files from either? And would I be then be connecting with the Network (icon) instead of the Go menu?
Sorry for the lengthy post, and thanks again.
