SATA Ports & flashing video cards

Hey guys,
I just got a blu-ray drive (Pioneer BDR-202BK) & purchased Toast 9 with the Blu-ray plug in & wanted to know if their is another SATA port on my G5 Powermac?
Cureently I am using 2 of the ports for my hard drives.
Also does anyone that lives in Australia know how to flash my PC Video cards so that I can use them in Mac? I have unsuccessfully flashed 2 of them & both dont work.
Thanks.

Anyone?

  • Is there a known conflict between a CalDigit FASTA-GU3 sata/USB 3 card and an ATI Radeon X1900XT video card?

    Hello all.
I am having trouble with my Mac Pro (circa 2008) not powering up the monitor (an Apple HD Cinema Display 23 inch).
    Here's some history.
For about two weeks I was having trouble waking up the monitor from sleep. I would have to reboot the computer to see the screen.
Then the screen wouldn't wake up after many reboots. I tried the Apple Cinema Display on my MacBook Pro laptop an on an older Mac Mini. The display didn’t' work on any of them.
I then hooked up a Samsung monitor to all three computers in turn. The Samsung worked fine with each.
From that I deduced that it was Apple HD Cinema Display that was at fault.
I replaced it with one I bought from a friend - in perfect working condition.
The new Apple Display worked fine with my Mac Pro.
Problem solved - or so I thought.
Now, a few days later, I am having a repeat of the same problem. The Apple Cinema Display won't wake up.
I removed all the peripheral devices, still no joy.
I removed and reseated the video card (after blasting all with compressed air).
    Still no joy.
I then removed the CalDigit FASTA-GU3 sata/USB 3 card I installed about a year ago.
Now the Apple Display came back to life.
So my question is, are there know conflicts between a CalDigit FASTA-GU3 and an ATI Radeon X1900XT video card?
If so - is there a fix?
    Also open to other theories.
    Other tech specs:
Mac Pro (from around 2008) 2 x 3 GHZ Quad Intel Xeon.
    OSX Lion
The video card is an ATI Radeon X1900XT (512 MB)
Apple HD Cinema Display - 23 inch
    Many thanks.

Thanks for the info on the Expansion Slot Utility. I found it and ran it. It shows no problems. It shows the ATI Radeon X1900XT to be properly installed and running at full capacity.
I found a reliable dealer of flashed ATI Radeon 5770 cards. A couple of trusted friends have had good luck with cards from the dealer.
So I will have that on stand-by for when/if the existing card fails completely.
    Thanks everyone for your input.

  • Video Cards with Standard DP & HDMI Ports

Since the NVIDEA 120 and ATI 4870 both have mini-DisplayPorts, they require an <adapter> to use with any monitor other than Apple's 24" LED (correct me if I am wrong); and, since use of the adapter does not allow <audio> pass thru . . .
I am looking for a Video Card (with comparable performance) which uses a <Standard size DP and HDMI port> in order to directly connect to other monitors of my choice (without using an adapter).
Does anyone have recommendations, or corrections of what I describe?

  • Thunderbolt Display Connection to a DVI Port video card

Hi everyone, Im a snob to when it comes to computers and I'm kind of interested to find out if it's possible to connect my 27" thunderbolt display to my DVI port video card of my computer with this device: http://store.apple.com/us/product/H5236ZM/A?fnode=MTY1NDA5OQ&mco=MjI1Njk4Njg&s=t opSellers. Tthanks in advance for any info that I can get guys.

No.  That will work only with Mini DisplayPort displays, not Thunderbolt.  Also that particular model is single-link DVI, so is for the 24" display.

  • Video card dead? Need to get a PC one - flash it if possible, need some hel

Computer is a 13 month old, out of warranty - go figure, Mac Pro.
Okay, last night finished work and fired up WoW and had several crashes, this morning I could not open WoW without getting a video crash right away, just massive screen artifacts and unable to really do anything.
I was able to copy files across the network and get some work stuff on my wife's iMac even when the screen was locked up.
I started backing up a few drives to a central drive, so I could wipe one clean and try a OS reinstal and see if that worked, was able to copy them even when I couldn't access the screen (Watched them populate via the network.)
I took the card out, popped the plastic cover off and cleaned the dust off - there really wasn't much, so I'm not sure what the issue is. I took a can of air and cleaned off the Ram, CPU heat sinks, etc.
Was able to boot in a few more times, usually locking up the screen in 4 or 5 minutes, however now booting into OS X, CD or Bootcamp goes straight to a lockup/you need to reboot screen, I've tried letting the card cool off to see if I could boot in real fast and get some pertinent work files (That worked on a PC w/a overheating card for me before, but I can't get past the lockup now.
I live in Vegas, so called a few apple stores who do not have any replacement cards, looking on ebay they are 2-3 hundred for a 8800GT, ug.
I was going to go to Fry's and pick up a EVGA 8800 GTS, seem to see a lot of how-to-flash posts, etc. claiming that works, and that's a great 'today-fast' around $100.00 solution (Money is VERY tight right now and things are getting worse incrementally w/the Mac dead.)
However - every tutuorial to flash the card gives me step by step how to do it via making a bootcamp partition, and having both cards installed, etc.
I don't seem to have the capability to do it from bootcamp as I can't get past the panic. My wife's got an iMac so no way there, the kids have a mini-hp, bleh.
My bud has a hackintosh I built as a gaming rig last year, I guess my question is, can anyone explain how to patch the card on a PC? Is it even possible or do I need to sell a kidney to get a Mac Pro specific card, flash the Fry's one and then try to recover some of the loss ebaying the Mac card?
Sorry if I'm rambling, really still not 100% sure it's the video card, but praying it is as that's the cheapest fix in these rigs.
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer!

See this link for a 4870 card, best instructs for flashing for a noob like me. (last lowest price was $150 for a 1GB vRAM 4870 from TigerDirect).

However, not every 4870 card will work with the ROM currently floating around out there. BEWARE!

  • Connecting 3 displays when video card has only 2 ports?

I have a 2009 Mac Pro quadcore with only two display ports on my video card.  Is it possible to hook up a 3rd display using an external USB video cards?  I haven't been able to get my Mac Pro to recognize the one that works with my Macbook Pro.  FYI, this is what I'm talking about: http://www.iogear.com/product/GUC2020DW6/

For another 50 bucks you could add a "real" card that has some hope of actually performing for you:
    http://store.apple.com/us/search?find=GT+120&mco=MTA4MTkyMjY
or for another 150 bucks you could replace your current card with a 5770 (but you would have to upgrade to 10.6.7)

  • Changing the order of precedence of video card ports

My video card, a Radeon HD 5450, has three outputs: HDMI, DVI, and D-SUB. I have my TV plugged in to my computer via HDMI and my monitor via DVI. I ignore the D-SUB port.
The HDMI port appears to take precedence. When I start my computer, the resolution is configured for my TV, which is then mirrored to my monitor. This isn't a problem, because I configured X to switch resolutions (so the monitor is correct, and the TV disabled) as soon as X starts. But this doen't take into account the TTY screens and the other operating systems I have installed.
Is it possible to change the order of precedence of ports on my video card? Do any video cards support changing this?

Have you tried doing it through Catalyst Control Center (or whatever it's called these days)?
Or maybe there's some jumpers/headers on the card itself.
The only [remotely] similar experience I have had was with an nVidia card. It had VGA, DVI and HDMI. The HDMI was inactive during POST, and there was nothing could be done about it.

  • Photoshop CS4 Video Card? - Need Display Port

You folks have been terrific in helping me with this project. For those that have not seen my previous messages, I am building a computer for a friend who uses Photoshop CS4 exclusively for 2D photo work. That's all he uses his computer for, so nothing else matters.
After a lot of research and some help from you, I found the "perfect" video card. The only problem is, it doesn't have a Display Port.
PROBLEM: None of the "tested" NVidia cards on the Adobe CS4 list you guys referred to have Display Ports!
Now what? With CS4's reputation for being persnickety, do we hazard buying a card not on the list?
The list was just updated in mid-January...and had not been in a while. It may be a long time before it is updated again.
As always, thanks in advance for any piece of advice or information you can offer me.
    Chuck

Zeno I see you are very active in this forum. Let me thank you for sharing your knowledge so unselfishly.
Several of the NVidia FX models do have the Display Port. They are just not "tested."
My hesitation with buying another brand stems from the "partnership" I have read about between Adobe and NVidia.
I'm technically astute enough to put this computer together, but not enough to trouble-shoot serious compatibility problems. I want the "right" card, but I want to make as "safe" a choice as possible.
    Thanks again.

  • USB Ports and AGP Video Card on same IRQ

I've got a tough one.  I have 6 USB ports.  Call them 1,2,3,4,5,6. Ports 1 and 2 work fine with my new USB 2.0 80GB External Harddrive.  This pair of ports 1 and 2 are direct into motherboard.
However system crashes when I plug USB 2.0 External Drive into ports 3,4,5,6. These are Dports with cables that plug into the MB.  One of these Dports has the four error lights which are all green.  Western Digital has cautioned against sharing this drive with other IRQs.  Says that the video card and the WD harddrive require dedicated IRQs...but I have no control of how W XP assigns them.
Ports #3-6 work fine with mouse,  scanner, and printer etc. However they fail when trying to use WD External Hardrive.
I also checked IRQ settings and IRQ 16 is used for a USB Port and for my MSI AGP video card.  I believe this conflict is the cause of the problem.
So help..how do I fix this dilemma?
I have Windows XP and see no way to change IRQs.
BIOS does not even show IRQ as a choice..only 1-15.  Also BIOS is latests version for my MSI 845G Max L MS-6580 mother Board.  USB drivers are all Intel.  Video Card Is MSI AGP MS-8878 G4Ti/MX 420 w TV out.  Bios and Drivers are current.
How can I run the USB 2.0 External Harddrive in Ports 3-6?

I did load new Intel INF Drivers and AGP drivers yesterday.
No luck USB Ports 3-6 still fail with External Hard Drive.
I'm not clear on how to turn back on AICP or ACIP.  BIOS?
Also not IRQs 16-23 are listed with active devices on the Device Manager
    16 has a USB Controller at 24c2
16 also has AGP video card
    17 has Audio '97
    17 also has Fast Eternet.
18 has USB Controller at 24c7
19 has USB Controller at 24c4
23 has PCI to USB Interface.
Port 3-6 do work fine with mouse, dig cam, Scanner, printer.  These ports only fail with External Harddrive plugged in.  Ports 1and2 work fine with external HD??
So question is how do I check on the IRQ ports using AIPC or APIC...or whatever the name is...thanks folks.

  • 655 Max FISR SATA & Video Card Troubles

    Hi all
I put together my 655 Max FISR (non HT) based system 3 weeks ago and have had nothing but problems (this is the third PC I've built and it's the only one to have caused major problems).  Initially the memory and video card were problematic, stopping me from installing Windows XP, but having read some of the other threads the poor old 655 seems to have lots of problems with various components.
My motherboard hated the Crucial Technology PC3200 512Mb memory (CT6464Z40B) I put in DIMM 1 and the MSI 5600U VTD-128 video card.  Anyway suffice to say I solved the problems easily enough.  I swapped the memory and the video card  over with that in my MSI 645e Max U (the video card was a Connect 3D Radeon 7500 for info).  The 645 runs beautifully with no problems whatsoever, unlike the 655!
I've now upgraded the Radeon 7500 to a Sapphire Radeon 9600XT which works really well. So if you are having problems with a card based on an nVidia chipset (which Win XP keeps saying has drivers that don't pass the compatability test) I'd try the ATI cards.
My main problem now is with the two Western Digital SATA drives I've got setup in a RAID 0 array.
Firstly I'm getting poor disk transfer rates (I used the SiSoftware Sandra utility to benchmark the file system, and got a really poor 23Mb/s).  As an example Windows XP loads up in 1 minute 8 seconds from power on, unlike the 645 with a 80Gb Maxtor DiamondMax 9 which does it in 45 seconds - I was getting Windows up in 32 seconds after initial installation of XP!!!  Now I know I've got PC2100 memory in this machine, but it seems to have got slower since I did a driver and Windows XP update (hope this isn't anything to do with the I've downloaded).
The second problem is a bit more serious, one of my Raptor drives keeps dropping off line when I run either the error checking or defragmentation tools in Windows.  The computer shuts down and re-boots only to tell me there's been a problem (a drive has failed or disconnected) before asking for a boot floppy. Fortunately, if I delete then redefine the array I get the system up and running again, but it is annoying!  Problem is, with the 655's reputation, I don't know whether I have a motherboard, cable or drive problem.  A limited trouble shoot by swapping over the drives has ascertained which one the system alleges to keep failing, but I'm now stuck, short of trying new cables, or buying a SATA RAID controller and sticking it in the 645 to see if it is one of the drives that's at fault.
So any ideas on the drive situation?
    Best regards

Apologies for being away for a while, been busy with work & sorting out a pair of bad Raptors drives!  Thanks for the replies from Hellwolf_36 and simps.
I can now report that after I'd worked out that I'd got not one but two damaged 74Gb WD Raptor drive (one had a lot of bad sectors and the other would take over two hours instead of 20 minutes to format which is why I was getting that stop message) and I had replaced the memory with one stick of the Kingston KV400X64C25/512 DDR, my 655 is now working quite well.  I haven't got round to checking if I've got the latest C-media driver installed though.
One thing I did do though was set up my Raptor drives as two independant arrays (C: & D:) rather than RAIDing them.  This is because, I didn't want to stripe the drives just in case of another failure, plus I have more flexibility over storage space not mirroring the drives, unti lI can afford to by another hard drive or two.  Anyway they're really fast in the first place.
For this motherboard I wouldn't bother with any other type of memory other than the KV400X64C25 as recommended on the MSI website, as it's quite fast and no hassle, (can't wait to get my second 512Mb so I can go back to dual channel!!)  Only problem is that the price has gone up a little bit over the past couple of months.
So apart from this MoBo being particular about graphics cards and memory it's not too bad.  My next challenges are too sort out the center/sub problem and network  this baby.

Didn't you check the CPU support list before getting the CPU? Only the Ph II X4 900, 905, 910 are in the list and that list is updated to the latest BIOS 9.7 2009-09-18. Just because the MB supports AM3 does not mean it will support all of them.
You have an economy/value MB and they typically don't have the features and support of the more expensive full featured MB's.

  • Z87 GD-65 7 Sata ports dead after bios flash

Greetings, I have a Z87 GD-65 Mobo. I updated the BIOS to version 1.6 from 1.1 via forum flash tool. After the BIOS update, I restarted the computer. While the computer is restarting, I noticed it stopped loading the before the BIOS was loaded. So I checked the debug LED and it stopped on A2 with a black screen. It took me awhile to figure this out but I removed all of the HDD and their sata cables (I have 4 HDD). One by one, I tried connecting the HDD with the OS to each of SATA port on the mobo. I found one that is working, and was able to start my computer (which is sata port #1 and the rest are dead) and get into windows. Question is: How do I get the sata ports to work again?.
    System:
    OS: Windows 8.1 PRO
    MSI Z87 GD-65 With i7 4770k no overclock.
    Memory: 8GB Corsair Vengeance 1600MHZ
    GPU: MSI GTX 780 Lighting.
    Power supply: Corsair TX850M
    Cooler: Corsair H80i

Yes i cleared the cmos by removing the battery and pressing the switch on the mobo and left it for 1 hour. The files i used are the ones from here http://us.msi.com/product/mb/Z87-GD65-GAMING.html#overview and the usb flash tool.
