SATA vs USB

Which external drive connection is faster, a SATA connection or a USB 2.0 connection? What are the benefits of these two options.
Thanks
Ted

I see no benefit to using USB 2.0 whatsoever. I even bought a Firewire connector for my iPod.
Like Rick said, there's no contest between SATA and USB 2.0, it's more like comparing an aging snail vs. that fighter jet. The old Firewire 400 standard is even faster than USB 2.0, average speeds between the two are: Firewire 38Mb/sec and USB 33Mbs/sec.
SATA is an absolute animal on speed and S.M.A.R.T. status is even supported unlike the other two...
USB 2.0 isn't as reliable as the old Firewire either and it still can't boot a Mac, though this might change with the IntelMacs eventually.
Stick with SATA, you can't lose. I have a Raptor 150 in a SATA case and it kills all my other drives internal or external.

  • Is it possible to install a SSD without SATA to USB cable?

I am in the middle of installing a SSD into my Mac 2012. Unfortunately, the SSD did not come with a SATA to USB cable. I looked and couldn't find this cable in any nearby stores. Is there a work around? If not, I'll order one but thought I would ask you smart cookies first.
FYI, I have already did a back up on my time machine.
    Thanks for the help.

No, but you will be restricted to USB 2 Speeds.

  • Issues with SATA to USB adaptor and filesystem

    Hi,
I just bought an SATA to USB adapter with an external power supply. I was trying to use it with a Western Digital Caviar Green 1 TB disk, I first formatted using a regular SATA cable using an MBR partition table with a single ext4 partition covering the whole disk, starting at 1 MiB to align it properly (is that right? I was getting a warning about wrong alignment and I googled it so I created the partition using parted and left that 1 MiB free at the disk's beginning). I then proceeded to copy some data in the just created partition. I shutdown the computer, disconnected the disk, and then, after turning on the PC again, I connected the disk using the SATA-USB adapter, but the filesystem was not recognized.
I tried several times using different filesystems and using GPT instead of MBR with no results. I finally tried to create the partition table and the filesystem itself while connecting the disk with the usb adapter and it worked, now I can access the partition using the adapter. But here is the catch, if I connect the disk again using the direct SATA cable, it won't even recognize the partition table, while connecting it through the adapter will work just fine. Is this safe/reliable? I'm afraid that if there is any problem in the future I will get some headaches because if right now that the disk is working I cannot access it using a SATA cable, imagine if there's a problem!
Also, at the very same time I'm writing this post, I'm copying again the data that was intended to be in the disk through the adapter and it's copying at half the speed it did when I first did it connecting it directly with the SATA cable (30 MB/s vs 60 MB/s), is this because of the adapter? or may it because of this apparently problem with the partition table and filesystem that only works when created using the adapter?
I tried to be as clear as possible but I realize that it may sound a bit confusing, I just hope it's clear enough so you could give me some advice...
    Thanks!
    Santiago.-
PS: What I'd like to know is if there is a way to get it to work both, when connected with the SATA cable and when connected with the adapter.
PS2: The final working configuration was using a GPT partition table and an ext4 partition using gparted while the disk was connected with the adapter.

what brand/model is the adapter ?
As for the speed difference :
Does the adapter & disk support USB3, or is it USB2 max ?

  • Reading with SSD X300 Sata to USB Controller

    Hey Guys,
my x300 stopped working so I want to get my data from the SSD of the x300. I bought a Sata to USB cable and connected the SSD to a Windows and a Mac Computer. Both recognize the SSD but cannot execute any operations like reading or writing.
In fact in Windows the SSD is not listed as a hard drive but in the utility manager the SATA-USB Controller appears.
However, probably I am just naive and the SSD is encrypted or something but I don't even know what to google here so please give me a hint on how to retrieve data from this SSD!
    Regards

  • Windows 10 Errors (Keyboard LEDs, SATA 3, USB 3, Graphics and Display)

    hi i`m omid from iran
my last win was 8.1 and i don`t change my pc`s devices and i installed win 10 and some errors occurs as following:
1.my KEYBOARD`s LED turns off when i enter win 10
2.win 10 doesn`t support completely SATA 3 means that when you use HDD SATA 3 with SATA 3 cable so windows speed reduces
3.win 10 doesn`t support completely USB 3 means that doesn`n detect some devices with updated driver
4.win 10 have problem win monitor when you are in game and exit the resolution remains like game`s environment and doesn`t change
5.monitor`s screen degausses every 5 hours means that screen vibrates some time because of problem for few seconds

    Hi Omid.
This is most probably because you don't have updated drivers for Windows 10.
Do you have a PC or laptop? This is still a Technical Preview, to test and try the new OS.
You can try to update drivers/firmware, but I am not sure that manufacturer will have drivers for Windows 10.

  • SATA, Internal USB, Firewire

I want to get an internal card reader for my sandisk extreme III CF. I was looking and found some that hook up internally via USB. Does the Mac Pro have any of these internal hookups, other than the SATA used for optical drive 1 and the 4 HD's, or the usb used for BT?
    So,
-Internal USB? (are these possibly called headers)
    -Internal FireWire?
    -Extra SATA Ports?
Also I am looking into some kind of PCI card that would give me mic-level inputs, and preferably support 5.1 sound. I just want to confirm that only a "PCI-E" card fits and nothing else, right? Also what's the major difference between a 5.1 soundcard that costs 30$ and a 5.1 that costs 130$?

in your search you best include deep sleep compatible. when you find one let us all know.

  • Stupid or smart? SATA and USB drive in RAID1

    Hi All,
I would like to use the cubieboard as a fileserver. I would like to make a RAID1 setup of 2 hard drives, but the cubieboard only has 1 sata port.
Is it possible to make a RAID1 array from a SATA hard drive together with an USB drive? Would the USB drive slow down the sata drive?
    Best regards,
    Cedric

You can use the Get Image method and save it to .png (or .gif or .jpg):
EDIT: Note that because of the way snippets work, the snippet included a control reference. You can simply create the method directly from the control by right-clicking and selecting Create -> Invoke Node -> Get Image.

  • SATA II USB/FW Enclosure

Would it be at all possible to use an USB/FW External enclosure for a SATA II Maxtor Drive 200 GB on my PB G4?

Yes it will work via FW, USB, SATA as long as those ports are available on the HD enclosure.
You just need to have an enclosure that will interface with the HD SATA port. From there the "bridge" to the other ports will interface with the same ports you have available on your computer.
I have read in other posts that the new Macs w/Intel chips will boot from a USB port but I cannot confirm that statement personally.

  • MAXTOR 230Gb SATA on USB

    Dear All,
first i would like to apologize if this is not the right place to post this. then lets get down to business.
I have a Maxtor SATA 230Gb and I have tried to connect it to my macbook through USB, when I was on windows this was almost hassles free, so i would like to replicate.
when I plug it in the OS asks me to initialize the disk and also that the disk is not a Mac Disk, but i have not done it (i guess i would not be able to read the data inside)....so i have looked around and i have tried to use disk utilities but not success (OS would not repair it). So i have tried to use DiskWarrior but not luck.
could you guide me through a solution, please?
    thanks
    Fabio

    Hello,
Yes you can have sata and IDE at the same time.
Its like having a CD drive and sata hard drive.
Your power supply is very weak, I am amazed that it is working.
Have you experienced any random restarts?
(5.75 x 334) This is not how you should state the FSB and multiplier
You should use the actual FSB frequency which is 166Mhz.
And the actual multiplier is 11.5
    166 x11.5 = 1.91Ghz.

Yep, that's it. It does have a connector for a monitor and a power cord. It has 4 swapable drives in the front. Video has been captured on it using Final Cut Pro. I want to try to access the footage with my Avid Media Composer.

  • Which Sata to USB cable do I need?

I have a late 2008 aluminium Macbook and I want to fit a Samsung 840 Pro SSD. I need a cable to clone the SSD to the existing HDD before I fit it. Any particular suggestions please?

For temporary use I used this adapter from OWC to clone an ssd. Worked well.

  • SATA cable replaced but not booting 2009 Unibody MacBook Pro but HD boots from USB

Intially I got the greay flashing folder.
Pulled the drive from the computer and booted it on the same computer with through SATA to USB external reader, no problems.
Ordered a new SATA cable and installed, I have checked all connections for firm snug fitting and proper instalation.
The HD will not boot from inside the computer.
I am in a country that does not have Apple stores and the closest reseller is a great distance away.
    Any ideas?
    What could cause this issue?
    Thanks!

    Try this:
Connect the drive to the MBP as before. Go to Applications / Utilities / Disk Utility. In DU, select the external drive in the left hand column, click First Aid, then Repair Disk. When that is done, do it again. Next click Repair Permissions. After that, quit DU
That process may be all you need to do to get the files you need off the external.

  • My usb that i have been using on my computer for a while suddenly stopped working, but is still glowing and letting me know that it is connected, but not showing up in disk utility

my usb that i have been using on my computer for a while suddenly stopped working, but is still glowing and letting me know that it is connected, but not showing up in disk utility

Either the physical drive or the enclosure electronics has failed. The light you are seeing is powered by the USB connection, the power, electricity, all USB ports put out. That doesn't mean the actual physical hard drive or the USB to SATA bus electronics are working properly. If it doesn't show in Disk Utility then it is DEAD.
Most of the time it is the enclosures electronics that fail. Removing the physical drive from the enclosure and put it in another enclosure or using a SATA to USB adapter, one that has it's own AC power supply, might allow you to get the files off the drive.

  • Transferring some files from old hard drive to new mac book pro: How do I do this?  I bought a SATA Wire, and can't figure out how to get my files

Hi there, my old mac book recently died and I opted to buy a new macbook pro, instead of pouring lots of money into the old computer.  I was able to get my hard drive out, and I bought a 2.5" Sata Nootbook Drive Upgrade Kit.  I have also installed superduper!....but I can't really figure out how to get everything to work.  I just want to be able to take some of my files from my hard drive, not everything...
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

I don't know what a "2.5" Sata Nootbook Drive Upgrade Kit" is but if you have a internal drive you need to connect all you needed was a $20 IDE/SATA to USB adapter
You don't need Superduper, that's software designed to clone a entire Mac's boot drive to a external drive for bootable backup purposes using the same machine/make/model.
Since the new Mac is different than the old one you can't clone (well you could but it will break the machine) the old drive to the new one.
However you can use the adapter above and software Apple provides in the Utilities folder on the NEW MAC, called Migration Assistant to transfer your User to the new machine.
However this might not be the best course of action as it can transfer unwanted data and cause problems in the Library, old programs that won't run on 10.7, etc.
You can simply create the same named user on the machine (System Preferences > Accounts) log into it and then connect the external drive with the adapter and copy the contents of your users folders over and place into the same.
It's always good to have another Admin level user account on the machine in case the primary one has a User based issue and you need to log into the other and grab files. So if either manually or via using Migration Assistant you wind up with two user accounts on the machine, it's really not that big of a deal.
