Satelite P205D-S8802 Freezes at apparently random times [ using Win 7 Premium]

The windows event logs shows :
[1] The driver detected a controller error on \device\Harddisk1\DR1      I got 8 errors in 10 seconds
[2] Fatal hardware has occurred : Unknown error processor Id:1
the 2nd error was more than one hour after the disk errors
Any suggestions would be gratefullty received,
thankyou,
trev

Hi Jerry,
thankyou foe the reply of course since you requested me to note time etc it hasn't hung
It is however running Win 7 professional not premium as I stated and it is 64 bit. someone noted... hope thats 32 bit....
The only info I can add is that the machine got into trouble earlier all that was running was skype logged in but I wasn't using it  cpu went to 99% and all I could do was log off [ took 10 minutes] the critical event at that time was as follows I hope I am not posting too much data,
thankyou for helping,
Trev.

  • IMac G3 333 Freezes at Seemingly Random Times

    Hello all,
I have an iMac G3 333 that runs OS 10.4.10 beautifully... except it locks up/freezes and I can't figure out why. I will use it for a while and then suddenly the mouse pointer stops moving and the keyboard doesn't work. If iTunes is playing the music skips then stops. Nothing happens on the screen. At that point the Mac must be unplugged because the power button doesn't work either. I typically get about 20 minutes of use out of it before a crash. Everything else is normal. If it sits left alone and the screen saver turns on it's happy to sit indefinitely. It also is comfortable waking up after falling asleep.
It is a 333 that I upgraded to 256 MB of RAM (filled both slots). Original 6 gig or so hard drive (I know, cramped, but it works). I also changed the motherboard battery. No other software installed.
Weird part is that this problem also happened when running OS 9.2.2 with the original 32 MB of RAM. At the time, I attributed it to OS 9 extensions. I did do all firmware updates before upgrading to OS 10. I did a complete reformat and reinstall.
    I have tried:
memtest in single user mode (all RAM checks out ok)
    repair permissions
verify disk (several times and in single user mode)
    reset PRAM multiple times
    holding the motherboard reset button
    reinstalling OS 10.4
not using my surge protector (stupid, but i tried it)
taking the fan out, cleaning all the dust from it, and reinstalling (maybe it was/is overheating?)
I cannot figure out what could be going on. I have spent a lot of time inside Macs (I also tinker with an SE/30), but this one baffles me. If you have a suggestion I would really appreciate it.
    Dave

A hard drive that's almost filled to capacity can have problems, especially if there's a lot of fragmentation. The drive could also have a hardware problem that's causing the read/write heads to stick, causing a system hang. If you want to continue using this Mac, I'd install a larger hard drive (120 GBs is the max. retail size that's recognized at full capacity). A worst case scenario would be a flaky processor. I had a G3-333 MHz ZIF processor in a beige G3 that would act up and cause system hangs. Once I replaced it, the quirky behavior disappeared. Unfortunately, your iMac's processor is soldered to the processor card. Unless you really want to keep using it, you should decide if it's worth investing any money trying to troubleshoot the problem.

Edit: I have tried resetting it, let it charge fully, restoring it, everything. but to no avail

  • HT1379 my iMac keeps locking up, but the cursor is moveable.  No pattern discernible, sometimes soon after starting, other times apparently random.

My iMac keeps locking up, but the cursor remains moveable.  No pattern that I can see, it sometimes occurs soon after starting up, other times apparently random.  Mail is set to load on start-up.  The freeze often occurs with this, but can be any other app, e.g skype.  Any suggestions anyone please?

command-option-esc keys will quit the offending program. Reboot whil holding down the command-r keys into the Recovery Dsik. select Disk Utility and then select your hard drive from the left side column and then select Repair Disk.

  • MacBook Pro - Stall, Freezes at Random Times & Durations

Hello all, hope you can help me with a perplexing problem.
Starting this past Monday, my MacBook Pro (specs below) started stalling or freezing at random times. The stalls will sometimes last for 5 seconds and then I can use it again, other times it'll last for 30 seconds to several minutes. On occasion it'll freeze up so hard that I have to do a hard shut down. When it stalls, I can move my mouse and even select other applications which sometimes work. More often then not, it stalls all the programs and I just have to wait.
It does not seem to matter what applications are running or how many. Generally I run a web browser (Firefox, Chrome, or Safari - I've been alternating to see if one is better) with one or two tabs open. I've worked flawlessly for several hours with Browser, Word, and Terminal open, then it freezes up when I try to open something like System Preferences (or Spotlight or whatnot). So there is no real pattern when it comes to applications.
The temperature hovers around 55 - 65. RAM usage rarely tops half and CPU fluctuates but nothing outside of what you'd consider normal (i.e. it never pegs at 100% when stalled or frozen).
    I've tried the following:
    * Ran Rember (1 pass, then another 25 passes over night) - No Errors
    * Ran Verify Permissions - No Errors
    * Ran Verify Disk - No Errors
    * Reformatted and Reinstalled the OS from scratch (problem continues)
    * Repeated the Rember, Verify Disk Permissions, and Verify Disk - No Errors
    * Reset PRAM and NVRAM
    * Reset the SMC
    * Ran Applejack and all the tests associated with it.
In the Console system.log, there was an instance of unknown-dev: flushing fs disk buffer returned 0x5. After doing some Googling, I ended up disabling Journaling to see if that would make a difference. I was able to run for about 25 minutes before it froze up again.
Any other thoughts or theories that I could try out? Much appreciated.

Reformatted and Reinstalled the OS from scratch (problem continues)
If you done that, then I believe you have a hard drive issue. Did you zero-out the drive (select "Zero out data" under the "Security Options" button in your Disk Utility) before you reinstalled a new system? If not, you might try that to map out any bad sectors first, before replacing the drive.

  • Firefox 18.0.1 often freezes, at random times, since about 31 Jan 2013

    2 Feb 2013
Concerns: Firefox 18.0.1 often freezes, at random times, since about 31 Jan 2013
I am using Mozilla Firefox 18.0.1, Windows Vista, PC, Desktop.
My Mozilla Firefox freezes since about 31 Jan 2013 at random times quite often, when I do see TV or videos, also with YouTube videos. It freezes especially when I do start TV or a Video, sometimes also it freezes when the video is running for some time. I do use Firefox mostly only for TV and videos, so else I do not see.
Some days earlier (26 January 2013), I had installed the upgrade of the new Norton Internet Security 2013. The two Norton add-ons on for Firefox, I have both deactivated.
I can get out of the freezing, when I do click to end the Internet connection. After I have waited for about 5 seconds, the Mozilla Firefox browser can be moved again with the cursor. After I click to close the Firefox, and wait for about 5 seconds, the freezing also does end.
I did do two Windows restores, one to 1 week ago and the next to 2 weeks ago. After the restore, when I started Mozilla Firefox, it was at first Firefox 17. But to my very bad luck, Firefox started immediately to update to Firefox 18.0.1 I had seen this updating on Help – About Firefox. There were good times, when people could choose themselves which version of Firefox they wanted.
After the restore, I had also downloaded the latest Adobe Flashplayer version (about version 11.5), but the freezes have remained the same.
Is there a possility to prevent the automatic update of Firefox? So that I could choose which version of Firefox, I do want. When there is a serious bug in Firefox, I could nevertheless use Firefox instead of changing to the Internet Explorer. I know I myself am responsible to prevent hackers from entering my computer. I have read that 80% of users in Germany do not have any Internet Security against hackers at all.
My Internet Explorer until now does not freeze.

This is not a solution. It is a gun in the mouth. Give us specific solutions, not "throw everything away" palliatives that involve no thought, investigation or effort of any kind on Mozilla's part. 95% of the utility of FF is not FF itself, but addons. After many years of developing that context, throwing it all away to get back a rudimentary 5% is as unacceptable as it is stupid.

  • A computer icon appears for no apparent reason at random times on my Toshiba Satellite P745

An icon appears, where there are two computers, one larger than the other one, on my computer screen for no apparent reason and at random times.  Does this happen to anyone else while they are using their satellite?  Do you know what it is supposed to indicate?
I have anti-virus software on my computer.
    Solved!

If you can attach a picture of the icon to your reply, maybe somebody can help.
Always tell us which Satellite P745 you have when you post here. There is a label on the bottom

  • My macbook freezes at random times?

Hey everyone, i just got this macbook a few weeks ago second hand. i've replaced the top case, and reformatted and installed osx 10.5.8 on the computer. and upgraded the ram to 2 gb. Every since day one i've had problems with the computer freezing at random times. Either trying to do multiple things at once will cause the spinning wheel, and won't allow me to do anything. Sometimes it's just an application that will freeze or sometimes the whole computer freezes as the time gets stuck at the time it froze. The computer will also freeze when i'm in the middle of moving larger files from a firewire external drive onto the computer. Any ideas or suggestions? I've ran permissions repair and repaired the drive and neither help at all. It also took me 3 attempts to install the o.s. as it would freeze, i thought that was due to the 512mb of ram it had installed. so i installed the 2gb once i got the o.s. finally installed.

Heres a log from the most recent freeze.

My daughter's Mac book freezes at random times. Apple's been unable to fix it. On most visits to the Apple store, it works fine. On other visits, it acts up, and they replace something like the RAM or the hard drive.  She lost a semester for university course notes, and currently can't use it at all, because Apple sent it out for 'diagnostics'.  Her college grades are suffering. How can I convince Apple to just replace it?

Apple policy in the past has been to try and repair three times.  If is not successful, then replace.  So keep accuarate records on when and what was repaired so you can make your argument that it needs to be replaced.

  • Dual G5 freezes at random times...

    Computer Specs:
    Dual 2.0 GHz G5 (2003)
    2.5 GB RAM (2 x 1GB, 2 x 256 MB)
160 GB HD SATA slot A (boot disk)
500 GB HD SATA slot B
    OS 10.5.8
My computer has been working fine for the past 6 and half years, and then I decided to move my office. Once I hooked my computer up in the new location, it started behaving very erratically. At random times (2 mins - 4 hours) after it starts up, it freezes and the fans kick into overdrive. I have tried the following with no improvement.
    Removed my 2 x 256 MB Ram. (Operated with 2 X 1GB).
    Removed my 2 x 1 GB Ram. (Operated with 2 X 256 MB).
    Reset PRAM.
let run with no USB (including mouse and keyboard) or firewire devices connected.
booted from CD (freeze occurred while booted from CD)
Restored from Time Machine to new Drive and replaced the boot disk.
Can not run AHT, because the restore disk provided to me 6 years ago is not recognized.
Seems like a Hardware issue... Any ideas?

I know this particular problem has already been answered, but I'll offer my recent experience for others that have random freezes.
I have a similar G5: Dual 2.5GHz running 10.5.8. I started getting random freezes where the system was not responsive to the keyboard or mouse. The display did not change--just suddenly lock up at what appeared to be random times in different applications. I had to force shutdown from the power switch.
I tried numerous things. I booted from a good backup--still froze randomly. I reset PRAM, changed the battery, moved RAM around, changed internal disk drives, no dust -- didn't help.
During one attempt to install a fresh OS from the Install Disk, the system froze at the point where I entered my Apple ID and password. Before shutting down again, I disconnected the Ethernet cable and suddenly the keyboard and mouse were responsive again. I booted again with the cable disconnected and connected via wireless. No more freezes. The G5 had been connected to a NetGear gigaswitch along with several other computers and NAS, none of which had problems. I power cycled the switch and connected the G5 to a different switch port and have had no freezeups since. I didn't realize that a bad Ethernet connection would cause the OS to lockup -- would have expected a timeout or other error message.
    Hope this helps.

  • Mail tool seems to freeze my system at seemingly random times

Mail tool seems to freeze my system at seemingly random times for a couple of minutes once or twice an hour. What's going on?
I've run permissions repair, & the disk repair run showed no problems. The disk is split into Mac & BootCamp partitions and there's about 80GB free on the Mac partition. I'm running 2 x 8GB DIMMs that have been carefully matched and extensively memtested and passed. This is an early 2011, 15 inch MBP with the 1.5 GB ATI GPU option.

  • Satellite C660-184 freezes at random times whilst playing a game.

Laptop Freezes at random times whilst playing Football Manager 2011. The game isn't graphic intensive and had worked for about a month with no problems, only recently has it begun to freeze and the only thing i can do is switch off my laptop by the power button.
    I have a
    Satellite C660-184
    Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (pre-installed, Toshiba-HDD recovery)
    - Intel Core i3-380M Processor
    - DVD-SuperMulti +-R (Double Layer)
    - 4096 MB (2048 +2048) DDR3 RAM (1066MHZ)
    - 39.6cm (15.6") TruBrite HD (1366 x 768) High Brightness display with LED backlight with 16:9 aspect ratio
    - Intel HD Graphics, Display Memory: 1696 MB
My graphics card driver is up to date, says my latest one is 28/07/2010.
I'm at a loss to explain what is happening.
Help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi buddy,
    > The game isn't graphic intensive and had worked for about a month with no problems, only recently has it begun to freeze
This could mean that the notebook is overheating now
The reason of overheating is dust that is blocking the fan so the notebook gets hotter
I would recommend cleaning it using compressed air spray to blow out the dust from cooling ventilators. You can do this without disassembling the computer so its very easy and takes 5 minutes only.
Just remove the battery and disconnect AC/DC adapter before you do this.
For example I clean my notebook every 4 months because a lot of dust is coming out so its worthwhile.

  • Skype freezes while typing at random times. Window...

I'm using Windows 8 Pro (64-bit), along with the desktop version (not the app). But I also recall having a bit of trouble with this on my laptop (Windows 7 home edition 64-bit) as well.
At random times in the middle of my typing, Skype will freeze. It will remain frozen for a few minutes. When this happens, I usually just minimize it and do something else and check back on it to see if it's working. It always unfreezes, I haven't had a crash yet. However, this is getting to be very annoying. It happens rather frequently and interrupts my chat with friends.
I have already made sure that skype is not running in ADMIN or DEBUG mode, etc etc. I'm also using the latest version of Skype.
What could be causing this? And how might I be able to fix it?

    Win 8.1
Using the Desktop version because, well, the modern version is unworkably stupid in too many ways to express.
30-60 second random freezes while typing. No crash. And call still work.
These type of Microsoft FAILS can surely drive a person to insanity.
Why do simple applications like these reduce in performance year after year wile doubling in file size many times over?
Years with this issue occuring and no solution from Skype. I am beyond words

  • MBP freezes (apparently) randomly.

I have a MacBook Pro 15" that I purchased in 2006. It has started freezing up at (seemingly) random times, leaving me with the only option of shutting it down by holding down the power button. Usually after doing this and trying to restart, it will freeze in a similar manner again at the log in screen.
For a while I was able to just shut it down for a few hours and it would function for another hour or two, which lead me to believe the machine was overheating. But now I could have it turned off for over 24 hours and turn it back on and it will freeze at the log in screen. When the problem started I could use it for maybe an hour then it would freeze, I'd shut it down for another 1-2 hours and be able to get another hour of use before another freeze. Now I basically can't even turn it on.
The battery has been completely dead for a while, which likely is contributing to the problem. I took the battery out and attempted a restart but had the same problem. I also noticed that the battery had bulged, which is a new addition to the problem (it probably started to grow in the last week or two). I am getting a new battery and hope this will help, but I'm pretty sure I have more than just a battery problem.
I would love any suggestions on what might be done to get it running again. I don't know that I've included enough detail so please ask me questions if you think you might be able to help. Also, I know the computer is very old, but please do not suggest that I just buy a new one. If I could afford an new Mac, I would have already bought one! I do not intend to attempt any hardware fixes on my own, but if you folks can even give me an idea of what is going on for me to tell the repair people, that would be awesome. Thanks!

First, remove any bulging battery as it is a hazard.  Properly dispose of it.  As tjk has suggested, next run the hardware diagnostics to be sure there is no hardware failure.
How to run hardware diagnostics for an Intel Mac
Boot from your original OS X Installer Disc One that came with your computer.  After the chime press and hold down the "D" key until the diagnostic screen appears.  Run the extended tests for a minimum of two or three hours.  If any error messages appear note them down as you will need to report them to the service tech when you take the computer in for repair.
    Some "common" error indicators:
    SNS - sensor error
    MEM - memory error
HDD - hard disk drive error
    MOT - fan error
    Then I suggest the following:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.
