Satellite 1800 - 400: CD-ROM broken

hey,
About a week ago, my CD-ROM started to act pretty weird. He doesn't read any cd's what so ever. I want to replace him but my question is.. Can i do this myself and if not is it going to be expensive...?
My Toshiba Satellite is an 1800 - 400 serie

Hi,
Francesco is right, you should bring the Notebook to a Toshiba Service Partner. A list could be found on - https://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com - Support & Downloads - Find an authorised service partner

  • How to connect Satellite 1800-400 on TV?

    Hi
I want to connect my Toshiba Satellite 1800/400 to my TV, but i dont know how to install a secondary video adapter. My graficscard is a Trident Video Accelerator Cyberblade Ai1.
PLEASE help because i am getting hopeless and frustrated because i need it for school

    Hello Kevin
As far as I know you dont need to install a secondary video adapter. The notebook has got Video-out jack output to transfer the NTSC or PAL data to external devices (TV).
If you want to activate the TV output function, please go to Display Properties then click on Advanced. Please click now on Display Device tab.
There you can set the settings to TV and in the Multi-Monitor Devices section to LCD/TV. Dont forget the TV-Standard (PAL or NTSC).
Nevertheless with the key combination FN+F5 you can choose between the LCD and TV.

  • Upgrade Satellite 1800-400 from ME to XP Pro ??

Anybody managed a satisfactory upgrade of a Satellite 1800-400 or similar (384MB RAM, 20GB HD, 800 MHz Celeron)from Win ME?
Would prefer to Upgrade to XP Pro, but clean install 2nd choice.
If I format HD for clean install, would an Upgrade version of XP recognise the Toshiba recovery CD as a legit copy of ME - I heard there may be problems?
I intend to upgrade BIOS and collect all available Drivers for this model offered by Toshiba for XP, but will there still be problems with any of the hardware?
Do the Toshiba Drivers need to be loaded in a special order, and is that during or after the XP install?
Is XP likely to be faster/slower/about the same as ME, with above hardware specification??
Any advice welcome, as I haven't upgraded operating system on a laptop before, and the potential problems seem greater than with desktops.
    Geoff

    Hi
I dont see any reason why WXP should not work on your unit properly. On this forum I have read many topics where users reports about WXP on older units as yours.
Please check Toshiba download page under http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/download_drivers_bios.jsp and there you will find drivers for WXP.
After WXP installation install display and sound driver at first. After that install other hardware drivers. The next step is Toshiba stuff installation:
    Common modules
    Controls
    Power saver
    Utilities.
It is important to install common modules as first.

  • Satellite 1800-400, what cpu?

    Hey people,
Just got me a second hand 1800-400 but finding it a little slow. I've order more RAM(256) to go with the 128 it already has. Hopefully this will help.
But I was thinking, What other/faster CPU's can this little machine handle? I can get a P3 1Ghz cpu from ebay cheap but would the system run it?
    Cheers
    Sym

    Hi,
I have looked at the specs of some other Satellite 1800 models and found out that they are using different processors. Most of them are using Celeron 1.0GHz and 1.1GHz. I also found a model with P3 1.0GHz (1800-804). But I think it is using another chipset, so I'm not sure if you can use a P3.
By the way I don't think that a little better CPU will increase the performance so much. Upgrading RAM is more effective.

  • Satellite 1800-804: How to boot from a USB device?

I have a satellite 1800-804 and i like to know how to boot the notebook from a usb device.

    Hi
If you want to boot from USB device you should press down U key on keyboard just after pressing power button but I dont know if this will work (as far as I know it works with external FDD device).
Try to boot up the unit with start disk (FDD) and load the MS-DOS driver for the external CD/DVD-ROM if you can find it on manufacturers download page.

  • Black screen problem on Satellite 1800-921

    Hi there
My satellite 1800-921 has started giving me a black screen after i turn it on. It loads up fine, goes to the desktop and then the screen goes blank and nothing i can do will get it back. You can just make out the dialogue boxes on the screen so I am not sure if its a screen problem or the things i see on the screen are just ghosts...
    It's a bit worrying!
Has anyone else had this problem? So far it only seems to happen when i turn it on. I usually have to turn it off and start again to get it back and then it works fine.
    thanks
    Nancy :)

    Hi,
at older series it can be that the FL inverter is broken or the backlight tupe is damaged. In both cases you can see the screen but without backlight!
To differi if it is a hard- or software based error you should start the notebook and press immediately ESC to enter BIOS. Then the machine should run a half hour in BIOS. When the failure occures it is quite safe that some hardware is broken. Otherwise it is software based and a recovery with the Toshiba Recovery CD should solve the problem!

  • Satellite 1800-100: video-out does not work

    He,
I just installed windows XP on my old Satellite 1800-100, but now my video-out does not work anymore. So I just downloaded the latest driver, but there's no way I can get it installed. According to Windows the new driver isn't newer, so it won't let me update it. And when i try to unistall the display driver, I have to reboot before it takes effect, and wile rebooting it automaticly installs the standard driver again.
    Can anybody help me?
    Greets,
    Daan

    Hi
Do you mean TV- out port or monitor port? As far as I know this unit is preinstalled with WXP Home and all drivers can be also used for WXP Pro.
Did you preinstall your own OS (non recovery image)?

  • Re: RAM upgrade on Satellite 1800-700

I would like to upgrade my Satellite 1800-700 memory to 1024 RAM. My operating system is Windows XP. I currently have 512 RAM and the BIOS 2.20 TRAD.
However, it would allow me to install 2x512 RAM.
    Please can anyone help?
    Thank you kindly.
    Lee

I have found your laptop specifications:
    Satellite 1800-700 Memory Specifications
    Standard Memory 128 MB (removable)
    Maximum Memory 512 MB
    Memory Expansion 2 sockets
    Memory Comments PC133 SDRAM SODIMMs
CPU Type 850MHz Intel Mobile Pentium III
    Model Comments 100MHz FSB
So, as you see, the maximum supported memory is 512 mb

  • How do I read a downloaded manual file for Satellite 1800?

I downloaded the file named S1800MnlME.EXE from the Australian Toshiba site. I didn't download it to the notebook to which it applies (model PS181A-00UK5), but to a different computer.
I double-clicked on the file. I got a window on the screen. The title bar said "WinZip Self-Extractor" and the file name. In the window, it said "Hyper Text for Satellite 1800" and I was invited to click "Setup". I did. I got a window that said "Installing Hyper Text for Satellite 1800". Then, I was told that installation was finished and to reboot. I did. On reboot, I can't find any new files though, just the original one.
What am I doing wrong? Will this only work on the Toshiba notebook itself?
    Thanks for reading this.
    Leslie

The problem's solved. There were files in a new folder on the C: drive called docs. Double-clicking on MVSHELL in that folder opened the manual.

  • Satellite 1800: screen switches black

I have a Toshiba Satellite 1800 which is, like me, getting on a bit! It was bought in 2000 but has not had excessive use.
Recently the monitor has started to play up and will suddenly go completely black. I checked the manual and to get it back I press Fn+F5 and it does come back although sometimes it takes a few pressings.
Does anyone know why it has started to do this and is there a way to fix it. I am dead scared that one day it will simply not come back at all.
I am a total greeny when it comes to technology.

Actually, if you look closely you find that the screen does not go completely black, it just gets very dim. You can still see the shades of what is being displayed on the screen. The problem is with a little board called the FL inverter for the screen.
    Please check the following thread:
    http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=15513
I have had the same problem for a while now with my satellite 1800. The only solution I have found is to open the LCD and re-seat the connectors on the FL inverter board. It works every time and lasts for a month or more. Keep in mind that I teach using my laptop.
So, it gets carried around quite a bit every day. The recurrence of the problem might be due to the jarring and bumping as I move the laptop from lecture to lecture.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. But this is not something that can be cured through software.
    Best regards.

  • Re: New SD-R6472 on Satellite 1800-100 - target drive not found

    Hi Toshiba fans
    I have a Satellite 1800-100 and bought a DVD drive SD-R6472
I have downloaded the SD-R6472 csel changer programm but cannot run it.
It says "the target drive is not found "
I did already download the latest bios version
Does anybody know what to do next?
Would appreciate it a lot if someone could help me on this
    best regards
    Chris

There is a simply explanation; the firmware which you are using is simply not compatible with your SD-R6472 drive.
I dont think that you will be successful to flash the drives settings.
Fact is that such tool is not available on the Toshiba page and I doubt that any 3rd party software would be able to do this
Before buying a CD/DVD drive you should ensure that such ODD would be compatible with your notebook.
In my user manual I could find details about compatible drives.
Maybe your user manual would provide info about the compatible ODD too
If not, then you should contact the Toshiba ASP for informations about compatible CD/DVD drives.
    Have a nice WE
