Satellite 1800 screen goes extremly dark

Help this is my second Toshiba with this problem the screen goes extremly dark and after adjusting a few times it sometimes gets normal.

Maybe the Inverter in the Screen area has a bad connection? Or perhaps the FL Tube is failing.
Sometimes re-connecting the Inverter connections can clean (deoxidize) the pins and get it working again.
But you shouldn't do it yourself if you don't know what you are doing, the Inverter is high voltage!

  • Satellite 1800: screen switches black

I have a Toshiba Satellite 1800 which is, like me, getting on a bit! It was bought in 2000 but has not had excessive use.
Recently the monitor has started to play up and will suddenly go completely black. I checked the manual and to get it back I press Fn+F5 and it does come back although sometimes it takes a few pressings.
Does anyone know why it has started to do this and is there a way to fix it. I am dead scared that one day it will simply not come back at all.
I am a total greeny when it comes to technology.

Actually, if you look closely you find that the screen does not go completely black, it just gets very dim. You can still see the shades of what is being displayed on the screen. The problem is with a little board called the FL inverter for the screen.
    Please check the following thread:

I have had the same problem for a while now with my satellite 1800. The only solution I have found is to open the LCD and re-seat the connectors on the FL inverter board. It works every time and lasts for a month or more. Keep in mind that I teach using my laptop.
So, it gets carried around quite a bit every day. The recurrence of the problem might be due to the jarring and bumping as I move the laptop from lecture to lecture.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. But this is not something that can be cured through software.
    Best regards.

  • Satellite A100: Screen goes blank after a while of no action and can't be reactivated

    Hi all
I am after a bit of advise/help. I have a satellite A100 & after its been on for an extended period with no keyboard input (like burning dvds), the screen goes blank. It doesn't matter which keys I press I can't make it come back on. The only way out of it that I have found is to restart the machine.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
    Thanks
    Gary

    Hi,
normally this means the machine is in standby mode (power LED is blinking orange). To reactivate you have to push the power button. Then it should bring back all opened windows as before going into standby.
You can deactivate standby function in the power management. (Start -> control panel -> power management)

  • Screen goes black (dark) after applying a video effect

I've been trying to apply some fairy dust to part of a clip, and it works great in preview. But as soon as I "apply" it, the clip goes dark, so that when i play the movie the part where there should be a special effect is dark.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    p.s. I am running imovie hd 5.0.2 (111) on a mac mini

    Hi Blob
I also observed this when using fxstabilizer - I just changed back.
moved my play-head one frame forward and cut cmd-T then applied
the stabilizer again and then it worked fine.
May be a one time phenomenon but may be it helps in Your case too.

  • Can't install Leopard on MacBook Pro - Screen goes very dark

    Need help!!
Screen is alright at first during boot, Apple logo is fine. Then there is like a Video mode switch upon booting CD and the screen is really, like if the backlight was off or really low brightness set. Special Fs keys on keyboard do not change anything on this, other keys are responsive but I don't want to start install when I can't even see the mouse pointer.
Anybody experienced this? All was fine just before the install, never had a screen issue before. Being able to eject the CD from the superdrive would be nice too...

    Same problem on my MBP.
    How I solved it:
Step 1: Aim lots of bright light sources at your screen.
Step 2: Realize how dirty your screen is. Clean it before moving to step three.
Step 3: If you tilt the screen at just the right angle and squint really hard, you can kinda read the screen.
Step 4: Place finger on trackpad and wiggle like crazy until you manage to see the cursor.
Step 5: Proceed (slowly, so you don't lose the cursor or the only angle that makes the screen barely visible) with install.
Step 6: Go take some medicine for the migrain you just developed squinting at the dark screen.
Step 7: Enjoy Leopard. (Step 7 is optional).

  • Satellite A500 - screen goes black

My wife and i have had ours four weeks and getting same thing happening. Dont know why.
also battery only lasts an hour when using and 2 hrs when not in use.

    Hi
    Regarding the black screen issue;
You should visit the Toshiba driver page and should download and update the graphic card driver to the latest available version.
    Regarding the battery working time;
This depends on the notebook usage and on the power management settings.
Please check this Toshiba HowTo how to change the power management options:

  • T40 Screen goes dark - still very dimly lit

HI all, I have a thinkpad t40 that i use for school, just word processing and stuff like that. I am having a problem with the screen. I will be using it, (either plugged in or battery) and all of a sudden the screen goes extermely dark on me. I can still barely make out the desktop but its unusable. I did some googling and found other people have been having this problem. Seems the only fix is to buy a new inverter for the screen. I wanted to check and see if there was anything else i could do before buying one and investing my time to take it apart....Thanks alot!!!
    Doug

assuming you've already increased brightness to maximum (Fn-Home repeatedly), and the screen is still not bright enough, then it would seem that the fluorescent backlighting is dying.
the inverter (converts low voltage DC to high voltage AC) which powers the fluorescent tube(s) could also be at fault, but ime, it's more likely that the lighting itself is on its way out.
as george has already mentioned, a key indicator that the fluorescent lighting is dying is the 'pinkish hue' (where there should be bright white), particularly when the system is starting from a cold state.
i'd start with replacing the inverter, since it's the least expensive item, but i strongly suspect the problem is actually the LCD panel itself (backlighting), and that will cost considerably more to replace... but on the bright side, it's not difficult.  if you decide to make the repairs yourself, be sure to take a look at the T40 Hardware Maintenance Manual first; it shows how to disassemble & replace the inverter and LCD panel.
btw, temperature extremes and physical shock can have a very detrimental effect on the fluorescent tubes and cause premature failure, ime.
it should also be said, these **bleep** fluorescent tubes die much too soon!

  • Extremely dark screen for no apparent reason

    Hi All,
I've just bought a MacBook, it's great except for the following issue. Suddenly, while I was browsing using Firefox under MS Windows Vista with Boot Camp (OK, I'm a heretic but let's discuss it another time), the screen went extremely dark. First I thought that the computer had shut down, but I realized that the screen was minimally visible. I tried putting it to sleep and then waking up, but the brightness remained abysmally low. I also tried manipulating with F1 and F2, no use. Then I made a cold reboot (I couldn't even see the shutdown button, only some shadows), and the problem has gotten resolved. The screen is now bright, but I don't know why the darkness occurred and whether there is a risk of its happening again.
Any suggestions welcome. Thanks in advance.

I've seen this a few times. I don't know what the cause is. For me, it probably happens once every 6-8 months, so I'm not too worried about it.

  • Primary screen goes dark when external display is added

    Hi,
Earlier, when I was on Mac Lion, I always used to face problems whenever an external Monitor was added to the Mac through the firewire to VGA converter port.
Hoping that Mavericks update would give me a respite from the issue, I upgraded my Mac Pro and to my utter shock, the issue has got magnified in mavericks. The primary screen goes completely dark whenever I add the external monitor.
Any idea how to overcome this issue ?
    Thanks in advance !

I meant the mini Display Port intead i wrote firewire port.. Hope it doesn't confuse anyone !

  • Screen goes dark when the computer is turned a specific way. Have to pick up the computer and move around in order to get the screen back on?

Occasionally when I turn my computer to show someone something the screen goes completely dark. Then I have to re-turn it or move it around to try and get the screen back on. Its not automatic dim because that is turned off. There doesn't seem to be any kind of pattern either. Help please!

  • Screen goes dark on resume from suspend

I have some problems with my video driver and suspend to ram. When I try to resume after suspend, my screen goes blank (dark). I tried restarting X, but nothing seems to happen. (The computer does still work when the screen is dark, i can ssh into it.)
The computer has an ATI radeon 9600 mobile graphics card, and it's using the open source "radeon" driver.
Im pretty shure this is a graphics driver iusse, because suspend works somewhat with the catalyst driver. (With catalyst suspend works once then crashes when i try to suspend a second time).
I have read the wiki entry for ATI-cards but it doesn't say anything about using suspend with the "radeon"-driver.

  • I phone 4 goes dim/dark during use

Replaced a cracked screen, phone comes on fine but after brief usage the screen goes dim/dark. Pressing the sleep/awake button on top will usually bring it back to normal but it continues to do this until I do hard reset. If I hold the phone at an angle, I can still make out that there are icons, phone is still on, calls and alerts still come through. Have done sleep/home buttons reset. If it were a connector issue I would think the screen would not come on at all... Any help would be appreciated!

Try hard reset. If not Resore as new iPhone. iOS 4.0.1 Made signal much more reliable. Unless of course at&t service is actually alot worse than previous phones showed.

  • Screen goes very dim after 3-minutes using Leopard

Has anyone had the same experience? I have tried all energy saving settings without success!! Its similar to the screen dimming that MBP users experience with Tiger (I could get around this by unplugging the power supply, and plugging it back in again) only with Leopard the screen goes very dark, almost to the extent that you can't see anything on the screen, and there appears to be no workaround. It takes hold without fail every time the notebook is left to sit untouched for spot on 3-minutes.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If it's a consistent 3 minutes to lights out I'd suspect the Energy Saver setting has got 'stuck' somehow, it might be worth trying a Parameter RAM reset - hold down apple/option/p/r keys at start up and wait for three chimes before releasing.
