Mike,
In your computer, the primary hard drive is designated the "master".  The Master drive is the first drive that is detected by the computer.  It is thus the primary drive and it contains the critical system information such as the master boot record which initiates the boot process.  Additional drives on the system are designated "slaves" and contain data, programs, etc.  The drive can be set up as master or slave either via jumpers on the drive controller itself or through a "cable select" method in which the cabling determines the function.  Many if not most of the Toshiba systems require drives that have the jumper method.  These drives will have a jumper block, a group of pins adjacent to the drive connector.  There is a small plastic block that slides over one pair of pins and can be moved or removed completely depending on the drive requirements.  The drive will usually have a label on it that shows the jumper positions for Master or Slave.  If you click HERE it will take you to a Western Digital page that gives further information.  Any drive purchased from ToshibaDirect that is listed as an accessory for your computer will be the correct type.  Other drives may or may not.  I have used the Seagate Momentus series as replacement drives but if you're buying an aftermarket drive, you need to be sure that you're getting something compatible.  The sales help in stores like BestBuy and CircuitCity aren't always the best informed.  By the way, this discussion applies to the older Toshiba drives the use Serial ATA drives and the EIDE interface.  The newer Parallel ATA drives are a whole different ball of wax.  I you want further info, Google is your friend.  Just plug a search term in and go.  Wikipedia is a particularly good place to get information.

  • Satellite A300 - Hard drive sound

    Hi everyone,
Just got a Satellite A300 out of the box and I was surprise that I can hear the hard drive spin. Is this normal ? My old machine didn't have this constant sort of hushing sound.....
    Thanks for any reply
    Otherwise nice machine

  • Satellite A65 Hard Drive Problem...PleasE Help!

When I try to boot my computer (Sarellite A65-S126) I get the following message,....It keeps scrolling down my computer.
For Realtek Rtl8139(x)/8130/810x PCI Fast Ethernet Controller V2.13 (020326)
PXE-E61: Media Test Failure, check cable
    PXE-M0F Existing RXE ROM
I have looked in the BIOS and the boot order is sound.  Also I have tried to boot directly from the HDD and it will not do it.  Also, I looked in the BIOS and it does not recoginze the hard drive "no hard drive".  I have heard that what the computer is trying to do is boot from the internet connection....but it should be booting from my hard drive.   IS the drive shot????  If not, I can not repair it via the orginal disk I got with the computer.  It will not format the hard drive because it does not see the hard drive......I REALLY do need help....my daughter's school work is on it and it is the computer she uses to go to school on....home schooled....  HELP PLEASE....

The hard drive has failed.  If you are very lucky, you may be able to recover some of all of the data by removing the drive and putting it in an USB external drive housing.  That system has a PATA drive so be sure and get one for an IDE drive.  HERE is an example from NewEgg.  You can then plug the drive into another computer's USB port and see if you can recover any of the data.  You can replace the drive in the computer with a 2.5" PATA laptop drive such as the Seagate Momentus line.  Toshiba has replacement drives up to 250GB.  You can then restore the system with your recovery disks and hopefully you will have been able to recover something from the old drive.  Consider that you've had an object lesson in the reasons to keep current backups of important data.

  • Satellite t115 hard drive runs constantly

My hard drive runs all the time, only briefly stops during restart

You more thana likely have some program running in the background that is either scanning the system for errors, indexing files, or a run away virus scanner.

  • Re: Satellite A40 - hard drive error - won't boot

My friend bought this laptop in April 2007 and was very happy with it until about a month ago when it stopped booting into windows xp.
On starting she now gets the message
"PXE-E61 media test failure - check cable"
    "PXE-M0F exiting intel boot agent"
    "insert system disk in drive"
    "Press any key when ready"
and then the laptop won't boot into windows.
I thought that the hard drive may have come loose, so I took it out and refitted it, but to no avail.
I have also tried to reinstall with the recovery CD's but get the following error message
    "status
GDISK (E) no such fixed disk 1"
    this is followed by ***ERROR***
    error number 11030
    message invalid destination drive
    X;
I ran a Toshiba (or it might have been Hitachi) disk checking utility which I burned to a cd and ran on boot up.
This said that there were problems on Toshiba MK4025GAS, which is the hard drive. the details match up with what it actually says on the drive.
The BIOS can see the drive to boot to as it is listed as the master, with the cd drive as the secondary.
Therefore, is it the case that the drive is broken. If so - can it be repaired or is there another solution.
I have tried googling the error message and there are conflicting messages regarding this issue, so your help would be much appreciated.
It seems crazy that the drive can break after only 18 months - was there a faulty batch?
If this is the case does Toshiba offer a replacement or is it going to cost a bundle?
    Thank you

As Im not mistaken the Sat A40 supports the IDE HDD controller and therefore you would need an IDE 2.5 HDD. But I would not recommend buying an HDD bigger than 120GB because there is a tiny risk that the BIOS would not recognize the HDD properly.

  • New Satellite L455 hard drive crash question

Bought my computer 10 days ago, has full warranty. It was "display model."  Running Windows 7.
Froze upon using memory stick (checked for viruses-none found) then completely crashed. Phone support to Toshiba could not fix despite repeated attempts. Computer will not go into Safe Mode. It will boot up to Toshiba logo, then goes to screen to choose F2 or F12. Can choose F12, then goes to blank screen.
When the computer crashed, it also had a strange effect on 2 other computers in the house, one is another Toshiba Satellite(older model) and a Mac. Neither could connect to the internet although the internet was working. I was able to solve those problems by completely disconnecting both computers and restarting after a 2 minute wait. They now work. But my new Toshiba does not, just stares at me with a blank screen.
Should I take it into an authorized Toshiba dealer as recommended? Can a new memory stick with very little data on it, cause such a crash? I'm afraid to use the USB device now.
    Thanks!

I would see if it is wtill within the return window and either get your money back or exchange it for a working model.  I would NEVER accept a display model laptop unless they discounted the price by about half no matter what warranty they provide.

  • Imminent Hard Drive Failure? Satellite C655D-S5130

Recently performed a system recovery after boot failure on Satellite C655D-S5130. Recovery went fine, but now we're getting a windows error message after startup saying that we should run file backup because the hard drive reported errors and warning us of an imminent failure. Otherwise running fine. Please advise.
    R&S

Everybody should already have a file backup for all of their PCs. So if you haven't already backed up your files then do it now.  I strongly suggest creating a Hard Drive Image of your C drive using a reliable imaging/ghost program. If the hard drive is able to provide a reliable image this will save you a lot of heartache and countless hours of rebuilding your NEW Hard Drive.
FYI I can't count the number of Hitachi HDDs that have come across my desk from both Toshiba and the other company that sounds like bell.  All with bad sectors or making clicking sounds.  On the other hand...I have not seen any bad WD drives since 1999, and I have only seen a few bad Seagate drives. (1 3.5" and 1 2.5").
My guess is that you are experiencing Premature HDD Death Syndrome or PHDDDS.
If you are still within warrenty you may be able to get it replaced....when it dies...but I would spend the $$ now to get a new WD Scorpio Blue or Black and make preperations to restore your reliable image to the new HDD.
    Good Luck.

  • Satellite A-35-S159 Hard Drive Failure

    Hi,
I am getting a message that a hard drive failure is imminent. I am prepared to replace the hard drive. (I might need your help there, hope not!) Prior to this, I tried to upgrade the memory, and was having crash events. Do you think that the crash events were hard drive related and not memory upgrade related, as I originally thought? Do you think with the replacement of the hard drive that the memory upgrade might take?
Also, will I be able to get the drivers I need from here? i don't have a Toshiba recovery disk, i will have to install WXP on the new drive.
    Thanks for any help!

    Satellite A35-S159
All your Toshiba drivers and utilities are here.
But you are far better off ordering the recovery media from Toshiba by calling Customer Service at 800-457-7777. (Have the computer's serial number and a credit card handy.)
When you restore the hard drive from there, all the drivers and utilities have been preinstalled in the correct order.

  • How can i access the hard drive in a satellite A30?

I have just bought a new hard drive and have been startled by the lack of information on the internet with help to access the hard drive. Please help. I have the satellite a30-203. Thanks, Daniel Short

    Hi daniel,
turn your A30 upside down. Then you need to remove one screw in order to remove your optical drive. After this you will see the HDD. Remove 4 screws that secure your HDD from the computer. Then pull back the hdd using the back brackets in the same way like you pull out your optical device.
    Hope this will help.

  • Satellite L40: How do I recover files from Hard Drive

    Hi
Can anyone help me please. About one week ago I started experiencing a clicking sound coming from my Satellite L40 laptop. My laptop froze and when I restarted it, I was directed to the system setup with a message at the bottom saying
"Pri Master Hard Drive Disk SMART status bad, Backup and replace.
    Press F2 to presume."
    I have pressed F2 but I haven't a clue what to do?
Can anyone tell me how to backup my files before my hard drive has completly gone or if it has gone can I use another device to get them off.
I have tried to use the recovery disk but the disk is not responding??
    Please help
    Pete

    Hi
This messages looks like an warning notification from the S.M.A.R.T.
It does mean that your HDD will eventually fail.
It could happen next days or it may not happen for a few months but the SMART capability has detected that the drive is going bad so it should be replaced as soon as possible.
It looks like your notebook is not very old so the warranty should cover all replacements.
I see only one way to access and backup the data. Possibly you could buy an external USB SATA HDD enclosure and could connect the HDD to another computer.
Im not sure if you will be able to access the HDD due to the malfunction but if you want you could try this.
    Good luck

  • Hard drive replacement on Satellite A100-049

    Hi, thanks for reading.........
Recently my Toshiba Satellite laptop has given an error on booting about imminent hard drive failure, so I purchased a new drive of exactly the same make and model, WD Scorpio Blue, 320GB.
On installing the new drive the laptop beeps quickly several times over and sometimes boots to CD or sometimes just beeps until I power off.
I've tried the hard drive in another laptop and it works fine.
I've tried to use the Toshiba recovery CD to restore the laptop back to factory, but when Vista loads it errors with a message like 'This software is not configured for the hardware', or something?
I've installed Ubuntu 11.10 and that works great, except I get the beeping whenever I restart or power on the laptop.
Can anyone point me in the right direction as it's driving me nuts!
    Many thanks!
    Steve

I appreciate the sound is coming from the bios, I was just highlighting the fact that I know the actual hard drive is functioning as I can boot in to an operating system.
I've installed a different SATA drive and that was just an 80GB drive and that had the same problem, that works fine in the laptop it is from, but put it in the Toshiba and the beeps continue!
I don't have any other drives to hand, but I think I've tested enough. The current one is showing as failing, but boots OK with no beeping, the new 320GB drive boots OK into Linux but beeps like crazy and the 80GB drive boots into Windows XP but again beeps like crazy.
If anyone can help, I'd be very grateful, as it's driving me round the bend! :)
    Cheers,

  • Satellite l505d-gs6000 hard drive failure?

    hello,
am working on a computer for a friend. we both have the toshiba satellite l505d-gs6000.
he says he was on google and started to suffer a malware attack and shut off the computer. the computer will no longer boot.
trying to boot the computer will yield a message that there is no bootable device.
upon entering bios, the hdd is not listed and is just blank.
so i really don't think that the hdd is bad, but im not sure how to confirm that besides switching the hdd between the two computers.
will flashing the bios help me at all here?
    any input is appreciated.
    thanks

If the BIOS isn't even seeing the hard drive, there's a physical problem with either the notebook or the HDD. This might sound simple, but have you tried reseating the HDD? Maybe it just came loose. If that doesn't help, I'd say the easiest thing to do is to try it in another computer and/or try another HDD in your notebook.

  • Satellite L350-12C - hard drive failure, need recovery

Please help. I have Toshiba Satellite L350-12c and its a German model. My hard drive failed.
The local Toshiba repair centre said they can replace the hard drive but without the disc they cant restore it to working order.
The worst part is its still under warranty but Toshiba is refusing to help me. The only place I can order discs is from Europe who wont accept an American credit card and mailing address which kills me because I have another laptop from Germany and they sent me discs with no issue.
The local shop even contacted the local rep and she was no help. Please help frustrated Toshiba customer.

Sorry i have a german l350-12c that was purchased in the UK. it has a 2 year international warrnty and i live in the united states. toshiba of usa insist they will do nothing to help. the local toshiba dealer is been very helpful they spoke to a toshiba of america rep and still was told their was nothing they can do. this model was not built for the us market. the local shop is willing to fix it if i get the original restore disc. without that their not willing because they say they dont have access to the drivers and the special fixes that would be ont the disc.which is the stuff that makes all the little functions work, Plus without the disc theirs no way to set up the recovery partation, which is damaged due to the harddrive failure. theirs ways it could be peaced together but they wont do the warrnty work without being able to fix it. if they just swapped the harddrive i guess i could manage but that realy blows seeing i have warrnty which is suppose to be honored even in the us. when i call toshiba of uk they say they cant send the disc to the us. but yet through my work we get things from simens in germay on a regular basis.so im completely at a lose thanks for any help.
