Satellite 2800-500 hinges

Ok, here's an obscure one. I've owned my Satellite 2800-500 for around 4 years and am extremely happy with it. Recently however, the screen hinges became very stiff to the point where they have now cracked their aluminium mountings just below the screen (inside the case). The laptop is now in about 15,000 pieces (mostly screws!) to gain access to the two hinges and find out what's going on.
I think they're just gummed up (technical term..!) and have removed a couple of the split rings and lightly oiled inside to try and free them up again. However, I don't hold out much hope that this will prove to be a long-term solution, so would like to find replacement parts.
Can anyone recommend some kind of supplier for getting two replacement hinge mechanisms please? They're manufactured by a company called Reell, but they just referred me back to Toshiba support. I'm trying some avenues with third party parts suppliers, but there seem to be so many different hinge parts that it would be a massive stroke of luck to find a broken 2800 laptop to salvage them from.
Any help would be most appreciated - thanks!
Mike

Hello Mike,
these hinges can normally be ordered only by a Service Partner because it is a replacement repair part!
You can try to contact a Service Partner and ask if they can sell you such hinges!
You can find a list of ServicePartners at Support & Downloads on http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com

  • DVD-RW for Satellite 2800-500: IDE1 error, drive not recognized

Installation of a DVDRW slim drive NEC ND6500 has caused an "IDE1 error" message on boot and the drive was not recognized.
Would the Toshiba SD-R6472 DVDRW drive be compatible with my Satellite 2800-500?
Does anyone know a way to make anyone of them work?
[Edited by: admin on 22-Jul-05 17:57]

If you took some effort in reading this:
    http://www.cdrinfo.com/Forum/tm.asp?m=84345&mpage=15??
    you would have known already.
Well, you always have people who know better, and ofcourse there are always people who know better....
    (euh, never mind, hihi)
    Ok about the IDE error.
    Vasdiak has an ide error-notification.
    I didn't.
In my case it was not recognized with the ND6500 connected and the 2nd controller dissapeared in bios and OS.
Nevertheless was there the same solution for what appeared the same problem.
This (and reading lot's of info on the web) got me thinking.
In case of NEC equipment(and maybe other brands as well) basically you have to look for a real OEM drives, which are configured as Master/Slave
Bulk & Retail drives are most of the time deliverd as CLS (even though retailers/dealers say otherwise), and that's no good for Satellite Pro 4600 (and many other toshiba laptops).
Just to cut to the chase:
The GNR-version of the NEC-ND6500A will work in a Toshiba Satellite Pro 4600 (2100 & 6100 too, and I think many more will).
As for the Toshiba SD-R6472 DVDRW:
My guess is it's the same problem with the same solution:
    1.Buy a Master/Slave configured drive OR
    2.modify it yourself by:
    2a.soldering pin45&47 together (like I did).
2b.flashing the proper firmware (which is not always available/hard to get), which will result in reversed ATA.
Problem is that the NEC, Toshiba and many others do NOT sell (real)OEM-parts to the end-users, even though many retailers believe they do.
But that's merely because of the lack of consensus on how to interpret the meaning of "OEM".
Fact is that many retailers sell bulk-parts as if there where OEM, but that's wrong !
    In my particular case:
I bought a NEC-ND6500A which was OEM-specified on the website (dealer), and after informing with the dealer I bought the drive.
The NEC did not work and I,amongst a lot of other things -->, contacted NEC.
I mentioned the "OEM-story" and NEC explained.
They won't deliver GNR-version to the end user, but he also told me the reverse ATA trick and send the proper firmware via email.
Then again I decided not to use reverse-ATA-firmware because it cannot be undone, and there is less available firmware in reverse-ATA mode (no problem if you want to use official firmware only, by the way).
    To make things more confusing:
GEN-version is specified as master, also by Nec, but the Toshiba does not cope with it well.
And so do a lot of other laptops that cannot recognize CSEL-drives (which it really is !!).
Kinds of errors one can get: IDE-error, unpredictable behaviour, no DMA possible, etc...
The GNR-version (or GEN-version with soldering trick or reverse ATA-firmware) IS however recognized as master (or slave) drive on the 2nd controller....
Enfin, if people here are really interested in solving their problem I think I really got them started here.
My advise: put some effort into it (by reading link above and search the web).
    Good luck to y'all !

  • Need info about HDD support for Satellite 2800

    Hi!
What max HDD can I use in Satellite 2800-200
    Thanks .

    Hi there,
the biggest model of the 2800 series was delivered with a 30GB HDD. But I think maybe you can try a 40 or 60GB HDD.
The bad thing is that I cannot promise you, since the machine is a pentium 3 platform and I donĀ“t really know how big they drives can be..
The most secure way is to buy a external USB-HDD and just put the data on it, but thats just my opinion.. ;)

  • Satellite 2800-400 sound card driver problem with XP-SP2

I have upgraded my Satellite 2800-400 to XP-SP2 and my sound card driver does aperently not work with SP2. I have downloaded the latest driver that I can find and that is 5.12.1.5245 from 2002, but this driver does not work together with the program Skype. I get a massage that the sound card driver does not suport SP2.
How can I solve this problem without deleting the SP2 upgrade.
    Message was edited by: felixnorway

I have tried both drivers and the same problem ocurs.
After ecessive testing I have found out that everything/skype now works well for 1-2 hours. Then sudenly my compter does something (I do not now what, and I can not se that the computer does anything) and then sudenly Skype starts beeing blocked by SP2. At the same time (same minute) that Skype after 1-2 hours of perfec running sudenly is beeing blocked, my computer somehow have loaded a file named kernel32.dll for the second time. How i found out this is just a coinsidence, no errors indicates this file beeing involved and this is maybe normal. The file is located at C/Windows/system32/kernel32.dll. Do you know what my comuter does after this amount of time and why it loads this file for a second time. When I turn on my comuter the file is loaded and that is logical, but after 1-2 hours what is the logic for the computer to load it again. Is this something I can shutt off?
My computer runs perfect and smoth for 1-2 hours, then I beliwe the whole system32 is loaded again and this causes some kind of problen and makes the SP 2 kick in.
    Any advice?

    Hi
A friend of mine has had an crazy jumper problem. The cursor jumped and opened similar applications.
This problem was caused by keyboard fault. The technician has replaced the keyboard and since this procedure everything works

    Hmmm.
You can find some drivers on the Toshiba European driver page.
The Satellite 2800 series is very old and the drivers have been moved to Archive.
    You will have to choose the;
    Archive -> Satellite -> Satellite 28xx -> Satellite 2800-600

  • Satellite P100: Cover hinge cracks

Jeffrey said that technicians replaced something inside the cover, and then all was well.
I would very much like to know what they did, so that I can ask for the same!
The cover on my P100 has been changed twice already but has failed again in the same place, by the left hinge, after very little use.

    Hallo Allend
Toshiba have just repaired my Satellite P100 for the third time, under guarantee, although the initial period had expired.
This time they asked me to send it back for "expert attention" direct to Toshiba, rather than to an approved repair agent.
The cover looks better this time - previously there was an uneven finish over the hinge fixings which is where the cover split.
The repair note states that the cover and both hinges have been replaced, and that the replacement parts have been "updated to finally resolve the problem". This is a rough translation from French.
If I were you I would insist that only these the new parts are used.

    I have a L20 laptop.
The hinges or the plastic covering it thats connected to the plastic cover of the open/close button is broken.
That might not make sense, but I can email a pic to anyone who can help.
If I sent it to the Toshiba shop, will they fix it?
Is it replaceable? Or a waste of time!
Help! Im afraid its disturbing the batteries.

    Hi Hannah
Sad story but dont worry. The hinges are definitely replaceable!
A notebook technician could replace both hinges.
You should contact the Toshiba authorized service provider in your country.

  • Will 2800-400 BIOS update enable 802.11g wireless LAN?

I recently bought a Belkin 54G cardbus wireless adapter for use with my Satellite 2800-400, which has a Windows ME OS.
The setup software wouldn't install a driver, even though ME was said to be supported.
I wrote to Belkin and they told me that it was because the laptop BIOS didn't support 802.11g wireless and that I should update the BIOS. I updated to BIOS version 2 but it didn't make any difference.
I don't know if Belkin's instructions were on the right track or whether they were they just pushing the responsibility as far away from themselves as they could.
Please can anyone tell me if my laptop does support 802.11g wireless, with or without the BIOS upgrade?
    TIA

Well it's done now so there may be other benefits. Not 802.11g wireless though it seems.

  • Oracle 8.1.7 on RedHat 9.0

Is there anyone who install Oracle 8.1.7 database on RedHat 9.0 ?
Help me step by step guidline..

    Hi
I do this on a redhat 9.0. it working perfectly
all i can say that's you must read this. good luck
    Next Previous Contents
    2. Starting off
    2.1 Prerequisites
a 400M swap disk (on my install)
At least 800M free on your hard disk. Type:
    bash$ df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
    /dev/hda2 5.3G 3.6G 1.4G 72% /
    and read the field Avail.
    Hardware
The steps we are going to describe allow to have Oracle 8i, version 8.1.7 running on:
    a laptop Toshiba Satellite 2800-100 with 128Mb RAM and a 600 Mhz Intel Celeron;
    others ....
In any case, never underestimate Oracle's system prerequisites.
    2.2 Linux setup
    Distribution
We focus on a Linux RedHat 7.2 distribution, since we had problems with it and we wanted to use it. The steps we are going to describe should work on any Red Hat 7.2 based Linux distribution.
    Distribution Setup
We assume you have your Linux RedHat 7.2 box installed and working in a reasonable way for you. In any case, 'base' packages, X Windows (the installation routine is a Java GUI) and the development tools regardless of whether you intend doing any coding or not is what you need.
    Setting users and groups
    Login as root:
    $ su - root
and type whatever password you decided root must have.
    Create groups:
    bash# groupadd oinstall
    bash# groupadd dba
    bash# groupadd oper
Create oracle user and set its password:
    bash# useradd oracle -g oinstall -G dba,oper
bash# passwd oracle (to change password)
Installing the right Java Virtual Machine
The only Java Virtual Machine compatible with Oracle 8i, version 8.1.7, is: ftp://sunsite.dk/mirrors/java-linux/JDK-1.1.8/i386/v3/jdk118_v3-glibc-2.1.3.tar.bz2.
Do not think: "newer versions will be less buggy", as the installer probably won't work. And don't think.
    Once downloaded it, move it:
    bash# mv jdk118_v3-glibc-2.1.3.tar.bz2 /usr/local
    untar it:
    bash# tar xvIf jdk118_v3-glibc-2.1.3.tar.bz2
and create a symbolic link to the folder the command here above has just created:
    bash# ln -s /usr/local/jdk118_v3 /usr/local/java
    Kernel parameters
Oracle documentation suggests that you make changes to the Linux kernel so you can get more shared memory. If you decide to follow that way, keep the instructions in the Oracle documentation and the Linux Kernel HOWTO at hand to build your new kernel.
In fact, the required changes can be made by setting some parameter in a suitable initialization file. Just follow some steps:
    bash# cd /etc
and create a new file rc.config, if it does not exists. Inside rc.config copy the following four lines:
    cd /proc/sys/kernel
    echo 250 32000 100 128 > sem
    echo 4294967295 > shmmax
    echo 4096 > shmmni
Edit the file /etc/rc and add the line:
    /etc/rc.config
In any case, if you want just to start playing with Oracle 8i, version 8.1.7, Linux RedHat 7.2 default settings can work fine, and you do not need to set any kernel parameter, as just described.
    Setting up some libraries
There may be some compatibility problems between Oracle 8i and gcc versions >= 2.1. If you experience them, download these rpms:
    compat-egcs-6.2-1.1.2.14.i386.rpm
    compat-glibc-6.2-2.1.3.2.i386.rpm
    compat-libs-6.2-3.i386.rpm
    install them, as usual, by:
    $ rpm -Uvh compat-egcs-6.2-1.1.2.14.i386.rpm compat-glibc-6.2-2.1.3.2.i386.rpm compat-libs-6.2-3.i386.rpm
and, finally set a symbolic link because there is a small installation bug in one of the packages just installed:
    bash# ln -s /bin/id /usr/bin/id
    Final step
Reboot your machine and keep reading...

Save the new version of .bash_profile and re-read it, by issuing:
    bash$ source .bash_profile
Finally, if you have not any window manager running, it is time to let it running.
    3.2 Starting the installer
We shall work under the hypothesis that you want to install cdrom Oracle distribution. Mount the cdrom with:
    bash$ mount /mnt/cdrom
and move to the directory that contains the installer:
    bash$ cd /mnt/cdrom/install/linux
    Then, launch the installer by:
    bash$ ./runInstaller
and follow the steps on the GUI it should appear:
after a first click on NEXT verify that the proposed path is:
    /u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.7
    and click NEXT again;
fill in the filed Unix Group Name with the value:
    oinstall
If, for any reasons, this is not your first attempt to install Oracle, you will not be prompted for the Unix Group Name. In this case jump to step 4, below.
A pop-up window will ask you to run a script as root user, so, open a terminal emulator and type in:
    bash$ su
    bash# cd $ORACLE_HOME
    bash# ./orainstRoot.sh
When you're done click Retry on the pop-up window.
You are now given the option of what to install. Choose Oracle Enterprise Edition, and click Next.
It should now allow you to choose what you install with much finer granularity. Unless you're particularly constrained by disk space or know exactly what you need, choose Typical and click Next.
When it asks you the Global database name, if you do not have any particular needs you can type in oracle.localdomain. Also, verify that the values of SID is set to:
    O817DB
    Then, click Next.
The next step is to set the location of the database. Type in:
    /u01
    and click Next.
Finally, you are asked to indicate the location where you put java. If you followed our suggestions the path is already:
    /usr/local/java
Since it is fine, click Next, and, then Install.
The installation completes by a pop-up windows that asks you to run a script as root. If you closed the previously opened terminal open one again and type:
    bash$ su
    bash# cd $ORACLE_HOME
    bash# ./root.sh
After the script completes, click OK on the pop-up window.
Oracle Net8 Configuration starts. Choose Perform typical configuration and click Next.
The configuration tool that starts is the Database Configuration Assistant.
    It may signal errors like:
    ORA-03114: not connected to ORACLE
The temporary solution is to just click on Abort. These kinds of errors will be recovered in a few!!
When the Database Configuration Assistant concludes its tasks, just click on Next and the installation concludes.
If you needed to click on Abort, you must:
    Download the patch: glibc-2.1.3-stubs.tar.gz
    move it into ORACLE_HOME by:
    bash$ mv ./glibc-2.1.3-stubs.tar.gz $ORACLE_HOME
and let ORACLE_HOME your working directory:
    bash$ cd $ORACLE_HOME
    uncompress and untar the patch:
    bash$ gunzip glibc-2.1.3-stubs.tar.gz
    bash$ tar xvf glibc-2.1.3-stubs.tar
    run the patch script:
    bash$ ./setup_stubs.sh
When it stops you are done!
    4. Creating a database
    We just typed:
    bash$ dbassist
and we played around with the default options. This allowed us to generate an instance of Oracle 8i we could use for teaching purposes, during an undergraduate course on the foundational principles of data bases. If you need more professional-oriented instances, consult other HOWTOs or read Oracle documentation.
In any case, at this point, what you should be able to do is to let interactive Oracle sql interpreter SQL*Plus run, by issuing:
    bash$ sqlplus
and by choosing one of the following two default account/passwd pairs that Oracle creates by default. The first pair is:
    user-name:sys
    password:change_on_install
    while the second is:
    user-name:system
    password:manager
However, if you, just for example, want to connect from/to another machine we address you to other HOWTOs; for example, Stephen Darlington's "Oracle for Linux Installation HOWTO" covers this subjects and gives other useful hints in its final sections.
