Satellite 3000-X11: Four beeps at start-up, blank screen

Hi folks,
A friend has given me a laptop to try and fix. It's a Toshiba Satellite 3000-X11.
Sometimes it works fine. Starts up like normal.
Sometimes, fairly randomly, it will not start. In this instance nothing will come up on the screen at powerup. The fan will kick in. The screen is black and there are four beeps. About 1 per second. It then sits there. On, but half dead. Can hear fan from time to time.
I've read messages on the net that suggest this is a hardware failure of some kind. What I'd like to know is if there is any easy way to know what hardware has failed. Nearly all the messages I read talked about three beeps. This is four.
Makes no diff if I am running it from AC or battery.
I have no idea what makes it start working again.
I suspect (just a suspicion) that it tends to stop working after it has been moved around (i.e. picked up and moved to another desk etc.).
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Also, is there a Toshiba diagnostic tool I can download and run that will test the machine out?
Thanks,
Jonathan

Coincidentally, I had a similar problem last night on my old S3000 laptop. I popped out a PCMCIA card while the laptop was powered up and it just hung. I rebooted it, and I got a few series of beeps and nothing else.
After a lot of swearing. I thought I remembered something about holding down keys at power up on laptops to get them working. I powered down, pressed and held the "esc" key, then powered up. The laptop recovered, displaying a "safe boot" mode. I selected "boot from hard disk" and it seems to have been fine since...
Hopefully that might help.

  • BIOS updating issue on Satellite 3000 -X11

    Hello,
I found a lot of people complaining of this same issue.
I found no solution posted. Most threads (now locked) ended with people saying "Don't update your bios if it is running okay"
This computer is not running okay and I would like to update the BIOS.
The issue is that the bios update says it failed due to the update not being for this model of computer.
The laptop is a Satellite 3000-X11. I have downloaded the v1.6 BIOS update for the Satellite 3000-X11
So I am not sure why it makes this complaint.
Please advise if there is something more I can do here.
Also please know the BIOS update procedure I followed was exactly per the instructions.
    Thanks,
    Jonathan

(sorry about the name change. Somehow ended up with two profiles when I accessed the forums via a different country site)
As per my original post... the computer does NOT run okay.
That is why I wish to try updating the BIOS.
It has issues with it not starting or starting but with a screen that is so dimmed it looks blank. Looking really hard at it I can see it is not blank, just VERY VERY dim.
I wish to update the BIOS just in case that fixes things.
The BIOS update complains that the PC is not the right model for this update, when it is the right model.
    Thanks,
    Jonathan

  • Satellite 3000 x11 cannot use its network card

On my friend's satellite 3000 x11 I'm trying to configure it to connect to my uni halls internet, but to do that I need the MAC address. If I do ipconfig it just says "Windows IP configuration" and nothing else.
If I go to device manager there's no category for network adaptors, even though I can see the ethernet port on the back. Its almost as if it doesnt know it has on-board LAN.
Back home her brother used to use it with the built-in modem , but not the ethernet port.
    Any ideas?

    Hi
Some Toshiba models have an RJ45-port (Ethernet) but nothing behind it - means no network controller. The machine is prepared for LAN but no LAN built in.
So you have to get f.ex. a PC Card to hook it up to the LAN.

  • Satellite 3000-X11 bios updated

I have downloaded the latest bios 1.60 for my Satellite 3000-X11 but after making the updated bios floppy disk and rebooting my computer, it says it is the wrong bios file in the floppy. Anyone knows what's wrong?
    Thanks

    Hi,
just to get sure that you made the update correctly, here are the steps
BIOS Upgrade Procedure for Satellite 3000-xxx
1.)Extract the zip file containing the BIOS upgrade to a temporary folder.
2.)Insert a formatted 1.44MB diskette in the floppy disk drive.
3.)Execute the extracted *.exe file in the temporary folder. Follow the instructions on the screen. A BIOS update diskette will be generated
4.)Ensure the Notebook is connected to the mains.
    5.)Turn the Notebook off.
6.)Insert the floppy disk containing the BIOS upgrade into drive A: and turn the Notebook on.
    7.)Follow the on-screen instructions.
8.)When the procedure is complete, remove the floppy disk and restart the Notebook.

  • Replacement of rubber feet on Satellite 3000-X11

    Hi
Does anyone know where I can get 2 replacement rubber feet for the underside of a Satellite 3000-X11? I have spent ages looking around the Toshiba site but nothing useful coming up.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi
Just to let you know, I phoned the Toshiba Authorised Service Partner. I called them and although they did not have any in stock, have ordered a pack of 4 which I should get in a few weeks. Minimum order of about 15 though!!

  • Satellite X200-25H - 3 beeps on start up and wont boot-up

Hi guys, I'm looking for a little advice before I get in touch with Tosh, it might be something I can fix myself hopefully.
I Have a slight issue with my laptop at present. I've turned it on this morning and received 3 beeps on start up (a quieter beep pause then loud beep pause then another loud beep) and fails to boot. I have the power, battery and standby lights on lit and the fans appear to be whirling ever so slightly but I cant get no POST or the Toshiba Screen to appear. On the surface it looks like a hardware fault, the thing is in the few years I've had this laptop, I've not experienced any issues what so ever.
It was fine shutting down last night, the error seems to have appeared from nowhere.
Any idea what these 3 beeps could point to? I've had a quick look this morning ie re-seating the RAM and Hard Drives but I got fed up trying to figure out which of the 100 more screws I needed to undo to get to the GPU's and CPU haha. Just looking for a little direction.
    Kind Regards

    Hi
Yes, the single motherboard is very expensive so if warranty is not valid anymore then its not worth to spend the money only for new mobo.
    >>It is unfair that after spending lot of cash for the notebook, it didn't last longer than 3 1/2 years completely disappointed with Toshiba now.
Guess what? My dad bought a notebook from another manufacturer; the notebook did not boot up after 3 month of usage. Fortunately the warranty was still valid.
So its just a bad luck dude. Notebook can start to malfunction after some days/weeks of usage of after years or it will run properly the whole time.
Ive got two Toshiba notebooks. Until now everything works properly.

  • Satellite A105-S4164 - won't start only blank screen

    Hi all,
I have a Toshiba Satellite A105-S4164 laptop that won't start.
I thought that perhaps there is a problem with the battery. I took the battery out and then hooked up the laptop to the electrical outlet, made no difference. The blue lights in front the laptop, come on, but I don't hear any noise from the mother board or the fan. The laptop is purchased in July of 2006 and it is out of warranty.
All I see is the blank screen.
My guess is that the mother board must be replaced. I also had kept up with Symantic Anti virus and also windows XP upgrades prior to April 1, 2009.
    Thank you for your feedback.
    Seyed

Can you see a picture on an external monitor?
Well I think in this case the notebook should be checked by notebook technician. You should contact an ASP and ask for help. This would be the best way because the technician can make sure what parts are faulty.

  • Satellite P100 will not power up or has blank screen

So I have this laptop that has failed me about 4 months ago. Will not power on anymore. I can press the start button and it sounds like its working but there is nothing on the screen. I can hear the fan every now and again and then a beep after about 1 min after "start up" but screen looks dead. Nothing appears on screen at all.
I've tried the powering on with and without the battery.
My laptop use to get very hot and freeze as far as I remember.
I've replaced my Toshiba with other notebook but if my Satellite is not gonna work again is there a way I can get files off there still?
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi
    > I've replaced my Toshiba with other notebook but if my Satellite is not gonna work again is there a way I can get files off there still?
You need the data and files from the internal HDD?
You could access the data connecting the P100 HDD as an external USB HDD to the other computer.
You could remove the HDD from the P100 and could insert it into a external USB caddy
I think the HDD supports the SATA interface so you have to look for SATA USB caddies
    Regarding the P100 issue;
Well it seems to be a hardware problem We can speculate only about the kind of malfunction but for me it looks like a serious issue
The best is to get in contact with an notebook technician and to check the single parts
    Good luck

  • IMac starts with blank screen

    Hello,
My iMac has been acting a little weird lately, until last night, when it got much worse. It's a 2009 iMac running Mavericks.
Every so often when I would turn it on, it would give the Apple chime and the screen would never come on, it would remain blank. I would try restarting a couple of times and it would typically fire right up, Apple chime and the screen would come to life. Last night, I was updating iTunes and a couple other things and my iMac restarted. Except that it did the blank screen thing on restart. Now, I can try restarting it for ten minutes before the screen actually comes to life, but when it does, it goes right back to trying to install updates. After the updates are done installing, the computer restarts itself... And the cycle continues.
It's pretty much stuck in a loop of start-update-restart-blank screen. It won't boot up correctly two consecutive times, no matter how many times I try.
    Any advice?

Check System Preferences - Startup Disk and see if your internal HD is highlighted. If it is not please click it and then select restart.

  • 2 Beeps on Startup and blank screen - Satellite P300-19P

    Hi guys,
I installed an express card yesterday and it's caused all sorts of havoc (IRQ conflicts, hangs etc).
I went to restart this morning and it's now just giving me 2 beeps and nothing on screen. I've looked up the phoenix bios bleep codes but this one aint listed. Any ideas if I can do a BIOS reset with a jumper?
Obviously I've tried removing the express card!
    Any help would be fantastic
    Thanks
    Owen

    Hi buddy,
    > Any idea what the beeps mean?
Only an authorized service provider can say for sure what this beep code means
    > I'm not fused about an authorised provider as it's out of warranty.
Why is it a problem if your notebook is out of warranty? Who says that a repair would be expensive? Maybe its a simple thing that would cost only few Euros.
According to a popular saying: You can lead a horse to water but you cant make him / it drink ;)

  • My iMac makes a continuous beeping noise and a blank screen.

My 2007 iMac is making beeping noises and it's just a grey screen. Nothing is happening. I've tried to restart and unplugged it and still does it. Does anyone know what is wrong and can I fix it myself?  Thanks

    Beeps on startup:
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images.
5 beeps = processor is not usable

  • Equium L10 300 Wont start up Blank screen

Hi I wonder if anyone can help or advise me with a start up problem,
It's a Equium laptop L10 300 XP homedition, After running PC doctor to remove Popups and adware my laptop stopped starting up.
Initially on start up after the system check it kept returning a blue warning screen which flashed off very quickly before shutting down and trying to restart this made it very difficult to read but i managed to make out something about a physical memory issue and dump, I managed to access the safe mode options and tried each one of the options including last known good configuration but all failed to start the machine up and just returned the same error message. Then at some point with all my fiddling it now wont even run the system check before crashing it now only does the initial boot which allows me to access the BIOS system F2 and F12 and nothing more.
I have the product recovery disc and even tried it briefly before interupting it When I realised the instructions say it will reformat the drive and I will lose all my data which I dont wish to do.
Is there a way for me to repair this problem or copy extract my data, before using the product recovery disc.
    Many thanks in anticipation,

First you should check the memory, it may be corrupting the data. Did you install aftermarket memory recently? Go to www.memtest.org and boot memtest from a floppy disk or CD.
To recover your data, you can remove the HDD and connect it to another PC using a 2.5" USB Adapter. Then put the HDD back in and run recovery.
ps. you can view the blue BSOD code by pressing F8 when Windows starts booting, and select "Disable automatic restart on system failure" in the Menu.

  • X1 Carbon (3443CTO) start up blank screen and no activities after BIOS ACHI to Compatibility

    Hi everyone,
    I have a X1 Carbon 3443CTO and it's running fine.
Last night everything was ok and I went into the BIOS and changed AHCI to compatibility (don't ask me why, I was doing some testing), then I went "Exit and Save Changes" (at the last page of BIOS). As soon as I press Enter the screen freezed there (as opposed to reboot)
Since it hangs there I hold the power button and it shutdown.
Then I power it up again, but now, here is the problem:
    1) The computer turns ON, keyboard backlight flash on for a second (normal)
    2) Screen stays blank (no, it's not the backlight faulty)
    3) power light turns ON (normal)
    4) no sign of activities pressing any buttons, no beep sound
I am not sure what the problem is but it feels it's due to BIOS setting I did that caused the problem. Would someone please help me to resolve this (urgent)?
    Many thanks!!!
    John
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

It turns out that the board does need replacement, they are ordering the part and getting it replaced.

  • Failed to start up - blank screen!

Yesterday, when I turn on my mac the grey screen appeared but the wheel doesn't. So when 10 minutes passed and nothing happened I turn it off from the power button. After some minutes I tried to turn it on again but at this time nothing appeared but only a blank screen neither sound chime and the keyboard didn't correspond. I checked the keyboard to another mac and it's ok! What's going on? I have poor knowledge in hardware.

Pull the battery and test that. Pull the hard drive. See if you get the old "?" on startup. A corrupt hard drive can in some cases prevent booting even from any CD/DVD or alternal hard drive.
While in there, find the PMU would be next step.
If a system won't boot into Open Firmware (command option o f) I think you are close to sunk.

  • Project Never Starts - Only Blank Screen

    Greetings,
I've just recently upgraded to CP3.
I'd like to have an online version and a cd version of the
project so people can use either type.
When exporting the project it works fine on some computers
while others just give me a the playbar and a blank white screen.
I've had some success with .exe files on certain machines,
but not the swf/htm versions (tried online and local versions).
Any ideas why the project just won't seem to load and play?
Unfortunately, my company needs this asap and I'm running out of
    answers.
    Thanks,

    Hi again
The CD Autorun failure could be the file naming. If you are
using spaces, substitute underscores. But I tend to only use the
older DOS 8.3 format for my naming.
Where are the files when you are running on other PCs? Local
C drive or on a web server? If local C drive, have you tried
copying to a web server? If web server, are you certain you copied
ALL the files up there? Often, folks miss the need to copy the
standard.js file. I didn't suggest this earlier as you said it
seems to work on some, but not all PCs. Which is what made me think
    it's a Flash Player thing.
    Cheers... Rick
