Satellite 5100-503: Changing HDD and booting questions

My harddisk in my Satellite 5100 broke down and I want to change it.
According to various messages in the forum, it is not possible to boot the 5100 from a CD when there is a (new) harddisk in the machine. And the only way to change the boot sequence is via Windows - which does not work anymore - there is no other way to change BIOS parameters than inside Windows.
I have looked in the manual - I cannot find any mentioning of pressing F12 or C or any other combination to change boot sequence (I have of course tried nevertheless to no avail). The only thing one I have found possible is to press ESC + F1 to _restore_ default BIOS settings. And powering up pressing the key left of the space bar gives me the possibility of flashing a new BIOS.
Is it really so? Since that would mean I'm stuck. And in that case I'll simply save the money for the new harddisk and throw out my laptop... (and probably by another brand next time - but I sincerely hope it isn't so...)
Thanks in advance.
Best regards,
Thomas

Oookay. So after pressing F12 at boot time I have to use the _cursor_ keys to move the thin line that looked like an error symbol beneath the graphical symbols, I should have guessed that...
Sigh. I liked the old text approach better.
Anyway. I'm now booting from the CD and I'm installing windows on my new HDD, happy happy.

  • Problems restoring Satellite 5100-503

    Hi all,
I have a Toshiba Satellite 5100-503, and it's hard-drive has malfunctiond, so I had to replace it for a new one, but now I can't use the recovery CD I got with the computer.
Could anybody help me with this?
    thanks in advance.

    > but continues to load windows
How the notebook can load windows if the new HDD does not contains an OS?!
Or did you install the Win OS on other way?
For me it looks like the notebook does not boot from the recovery CD.
The drive cannot read the recovery CD due to the drive malfunction or CD fault.
Did you check if its possible to boot from other bootable CDs?
One hint: try to set the BIOS to the default and safe the settings. Then power up the notebook and press F12 immediately after notebook starting. The boot menu should appear and you should be able to choose the CD as boot device.

  • HELP! Satellite 5100-503 stopped working!!

    Hi!
I have a Satellite 5100-503 and was really satisfied until yesterday.
    There it stopped working.
What I did: Closed the notebook after work (everything ok) and leaved it alone for a while. When I opend the notebook again to continue working nothing happend.
Only the small frontdisplay showed me a spinning CD (no CD inserted) and the battery status display. After pressing the on-button the on-sign appeared but nothing happened again. Pressing the button again (for some seconds) made the on-sign dissapear. No display, no fan, no harddisk noise in any case (ono/off). Inserting an audio CD and pessing the play-button works! Soundsystem is working well.
Does anyone have an idea what the problem could be?
any questions? more infos necessary? please ask!
    Please help

    Hello Hadj!
That was what I thought first and connected an external Diplay (15" TFT). But nothing was shown.
At the Toshiba support hotline a learned about the F8 button at startup; but still no reaction.
According to Toshiba it seems the either the mainboard or the CPU is defect. Approx costs 500 to 700 without
the cost for lookinto what damaged (extra 65).
So I think I will give up on that and look for another Notebook.

  • Satellite 5100-503: burning a 800 Mb CD-Rom

    Hi,
Maximum capacity of a CD in the combo DVD reader/CD of the Satellite 5100-503 seems to be 703Mb. Is there any solution to burn 800 Mb/90 minutes CDs ?
    Thanks

    Hi Sam,
    Thanks for you fast answer.
1)What's a "real" CD Rom ? In shops they sell 700Mb, 800MB and 870Mb CDs. The 800Mb only shows 703Mb on the screen of the burning programs. So, I wish I could overwrite until 800 or 870 on those last two categories that seem specific for this purpose.
    2) No, I did not check a new firmware. last time I tried, it did destroy the whole combo and I got to pay 1000 dollars for repairs from the Toshiba rep.
    3) XP, "Drag and drop CD" that was delivered in the Tosh.
    But I started experiencing Nero.
    4) The CD salesman said I just had to expand the CD capacity in Nero to 870 Mb and overburn up to that limit and it is going to be ok....
With computers things are never that simple. Nero warns me: if the CD-Rom drive is not able to burn more than 700Mb some hardware damage may result.
Would you think, Sam that experiencing Nero and overburning up to 870 Mb would be safe ?
Thnks for your time and knowledge.

  • Satellite 5100-503 - I need a new graphic card

My Satellite 5100-503 shows garbled image during startup particularly when the computer is warm.
    The sound also breaks.
It was diagnosed as a display card problem. The card has nVidia GeForce4 440 Go chip.
What is the equivalent card available in the market or any reliable source?

    Hi Santos
Thanks for posting this your personal opinion but I have to say that you are simply not right
The Toshiba ASP (authorized service partner) will help you always if you have some hardware problems.
But they will not provide you any disassemble manuals because such manual are not for public usage!
And this is not only Toshiba rules but you will find such rule in every company!
If you need an solution the guys will help you and should be abel to replace the faulty part...
Furthermore your Satellite 5100 is an older notebook and the nVidia GeForce4 440Go graphic card is not weakness.
Every notebook parts can start to malfunction after a long time of usage! This is nothing unusual but simply "real world".
So dont speak about weakness because its simply not right and the nVidia GeForce4 440 Go supports the same quality standard like other different graphic chips
Anyway, if you want to solve this issue then the motherboard (contains the graphic card) must be replaced.

  • Need WXP drivers for Satellite 5100-503

I have a Satellite 5100-503 with a GeForce4 440 Go and I recently installed Windows XP Professional with SP2 as fresh install. I tried to play a game that I had installed and played on the other operating system (XP SP1).
When I tried to run it, it sent me a Could not run OpenGL message. Then I browsed your website for drivers. The only problem was that when I checked your driver archives my model was nowhere to be found.
I checked various other unofficial websites for drivers but again without success. After that I tried models that where close to my model, but they didnt help me, then I tried various force wares with modded .inf, no success either.
All Im here to ask you is to please send me the drivers or upload them to the internet for download. The last time (a couple of years ago) when I had installed the OS, I downloaded the drivers from your website and it worked perfectly.
I hope you can answer to my problem as soon as possible.
Also I would like to have all the drivers needed for my laptop, for Windows XP SP2.
    Thanks in advance

    Terentino
I searched the whole drivers archive and it doesn't show my model "5100-503", it skips from 5005-S508 to 5105-S501...
I am at least with no sound drivers as the sound appears to have a lot of static.
PS: Sorry for my absence I was away working and i didn't have time to drop by and give you more intel.

  • TrackControl, Change Track, and others questions about AvTransmit

    Hi there,
I've got multiples questions about JMF and AvTransmit, hope you will help
For a small student project, i'm developing a streaming server using JMF, i have used the AvTransmit example.
Streaming, etc... everything work fine, i stream music over web
But i need help with "playlist" :
// Get the tracks from the processor
    TrackControl[] tracks = processor.getTrackControls();
    First Question :
The Processor use a MediaLocator to get one track, is there a way to indicate multiples tracks, such as a directory containing multiples audio file ?
At this time, i can only set 1 file in the MediaLocator.
I'm using a simple class as Playlist (a File[]), and, when i want to change song, i stop the thread, change the MediaLocator with another file, and restart the thread.
It works on a Lan, but on Internet, Player (I use VLC for my test) lost the connection, i need to restart VLC to get audio again.
    Second Question
Is there a more "elegant" way to change tracks ?
    Last Question
I have think about building my own object Playlist... gasp...
I've look at the javadoc... but i'm a bit lost... does my class have to implement TrackControl ? what are the object inside etc...
If someone knows information about this...
    That's all ;)
    Thanks !
Tommy, french student (sorry for the english)

    First Question :
The Processor use a MediaLocator to get one track, is there a way to indicate multiples tracks, such as a directory containing multiples audio file ?
At this time, i can only set 1 file in the MediaLocator.No. The processor uses a MediaLocator to get one file. Files (can) contain multiple tracks.
You can, in fact, combine the tracks of multiple files together, but, there's no need to do that with your application. AVTransmit2 sends each track as a separate RTP stream, so you'd just be sticking them together just to pull them apart again.
In general, you want to keep your architecture as one processor per file, one RTP stream per track.
    Second Question
Is there a more "elegant" way to change tracks ?Yes. It's what I refer to as a jukebox DataSource. I discuss it / explain the concept on this previous thread.
What you're essentially doing when you change the MediaLocator is starting over from scratch. You end up with a whole new DataSource, whole new Processor, whole new RTP session. On the LAN, this isn't an issue because it looks like you paused the RTP session (because the IP/PORTs don't change).
Over the internet, though, when you stop sending and restart, you're very likely going to get a new public NAT port. And so when your stream gets to the client, it's going to look like it's from a different person than the original.
The solution is to use the jukebox datasource to change the media without restarting the Processor or the RTP streams. That'll ensure that your stream won't move between files from the perspective of the client...
    Last Question
I have think about building my own object Playlist... gasp...
I've look at the javadoc... but i'm a bit lost... does my class have to implement TrackControl ? what are the object inside etc...
If someone knows information about this...Ummmm, your "Playlist" object should just be a Jukebox datasource, so follow the link and figure out how that's supposed to work. If you have questions about it, just ask 'em here (rather than on the older thread)...

"is there a step somewhere that I can follow to replace my HDD and what HDD is compatible."
You have several resources at your disposal. There are several threads in this forum mentioning which third-party HDAs have been used to upgrade your computer. There are several online tutorials regarding the HDA replacement in your computer.

  • Format HDD and boot from usb?

My Macbook Air (2011) is very slow and I keep getting a warning message that the start up disk is full.
I would like to reformat the HDD and load Mountain Lion direct from a USB stick. Is this possible and what is the procedure.
    Thanks
    Rudy

Check out this article. If you don't already have a copy of the Mt Lion installer you'll need to download one. In order to download it you'll need to have enough free drive space, about 8GB. I've seen this turn into a chicken/egg situation :-(

  • Changing HDD for SSD QUESTION (U410)

Is any data held on the 500GB drive at time of reset?
Basically my question is, can I simply swap the 500gb HDD for a 250gb SSD without problems of so when I reset the Windows8 install etc will work as usual?
I will use the one click recovery button, and reset everything, except this time on the 250gb SSD.
    HELP?

    hi shoutingdog,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
First Before you change any setting or setup,
Create a backupdrive first of your WIndows 8 using this Method and let's Name that as your Repair Image.
Download and install belarc advisor to get the product key.
The HDD will have everything, your Windows 8 Os and even the Onekey Recovery Partition, so removing your HDD will render the One click recovery button Not working.
Two ways to install windows 8 back to the blank SSD.
1 You will need an external mount for your SSD or HDD where the scenario should be both SSD and HDD are connected to the computer so you can clone the HDD to your SSD.
(If the clone failed then you can use the Repair Image)
2 You can use a retail copy or any installer copy of Windows 8 and install that to your SSD, if asked for a product key, use the Key extracted using the Belarc advisor.
Any driver needs you can download from Support.lenovo.com
Again The Preloaded HDD Contains the Recovery partition, and the One click feature will look for the HDD where it is saved.
    Best Regards
    Solid Cruver

  • Inspiron 1545 - New HDD and Boot CD not working

    Dear Dell Support,
my Inspiron 1545's HDD died and I bought a new WD Blue (WD5000LPVX) to replace it with.
Initially the HDD was not recognizable (PCW cable not present) and after some searching I found that I had to disable NIC on BIOS.
After doing so, the HDD was present on the BIOS.
I tried then to boot from CD, both Windows and Ubuntu, but it never reaches this, even though both changing the boot sequence and choosing what to boot from on F12.
It ends up with a message 'Operating System not present'.
I also noticed that BIOS becomes very slow when the HDD is present.
Finally, it seems that the new drive is a SATA 3 one, but this can be changed using jumpers...
Any ideas on how to boot the laptop with this setup using a CD/DVD?
    Thank you.

  • Prohibited sign at bootup after cloning internal hdd to external hdd and booting up from it

    Good evening.
My specifications/environment: I have a Macbook Pro 17" 2009 model running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.  The internal hdd had 2 partitions, one for Mac and one for Bootcamp.
Objective:  I am trying to upgrade the internal 500GB to a Seagate 1TB external Harddrive and making it the primary internal. Then I want to upgrade to Mountain Lion.
Steps taken:  Used a 2TB external to make a Time Machine backup of the current internal harddrive.  I put it aside.  I made a clone of the internal harddrive (only the mac partition) to another 1TB external, using Disk Rescue 3.  I took external Seagate out of its external case and replaced the 500GB internal. I booted up with the new 1TB drive and got a prohibited sign with the spinning circle.  I booted up again holding in the ALT key to select the boot drive.
I did notice though that the 1TB Seagate drive used, is a little bit fatter than the previous 500GB internal.  I did manage to fit the drive in still, as it had the SATA connector and it did sort of fit in.
Since I couldnt get the drive loaded up, I put the original back in, started up and did a verify and repair on the new drive.  It did say that there was a minor header error and it fixed it.  Put the new 1TB back in as the internal, but still getting the prohibited sign at startup.
I booted up again without holding ALT and got the folder with the question mark flashing. I shut down again and used ALT and selected the Hard drive for start up and got the prohibited sign again.
i must mention that I also had difficulties deleting the Bootcamp partition and reclaiming the storage to the Mac HDD.
I have more details on the issue as I've tried so many different things.
Please guide me into what steps I should take to make this work.
    Thank you in advance

After the two previous partition/format attempts (the first of which included Zero Data erase [around 5 hrs on the 500GB drive as recommended per Kappy's Extended Hard Drive Preparation]) I returned the drive to the retailer for an exchange with an identical WD Scorpio Blue 500GB (I wasn't sure that there was an issue with the drive but didn't want to take any chances on my brand new hard drive upgrade....).
I prepared the new replacement drive attached via USB 2.0 Bytec DriveMate (which has a separate power supply) using Disk Utility (running DU off the internal hard drive [Leopard ver 11.1}), partitioned as 1 partition, GUID, Mac OS Extended (Journaled); erased (but did not zero data); unchecked the "ignore ownership" check box of the external destination drive via Get Info after selecting the drive on the Desktop; and cloned the internal HD to the external drive using the Restore tab of DU, selecting "erase destination" check box.
The clone using Disk Utility Restore tab completed successfully in around 4 hours (83GB of data cloned to the 500GB drive...seems long...perhaps selecting "erase destination" under the Restore tab caused it to take longer?). I unchecked the "ignore ownership" box for the destination drive again after cloning. Rebooted to the external drive and ran a few apps....everything OK.
Not sure what the difference was in the successful clone - whether there was a problem with the original drive or whether "zeroing the data" during the first erase and partition may have created issues - but it worked fine with the new drive.
