Satellite A10 - boot priority needs to be changed

Hi everyone,
I've got an old Satellite A10 here, and I'm supposed to put a new operating system on it.
Problem: It doesn't let me boot from CD/DVD!!!
In BIOS (APCI BIOS version = 1.30), I cannot change the boot priority, that is I cannot set the DVD drive as first boot device.
Pressing F12 or "C" when switching on the notebook doesn't show boot options either.
In another thread I read that one can change the boot device by selecting the boot devices' images that can be seen below the TOSHIBA sign when the notebook's power has just been turned on. How do you do that? Arrow keys and TAB dont work for me....
In the windows startmenu, there's the TOSHIBA utility HWSetup that is password protected. In the manual it says that you can change boot priority there (from inside windows!), but unfortunately the owner does not remember any password he might have set, so I cannot change boot sequence from there either.
but anyway it must be possible to boot from CD without accessing windows, in case windows doesn't work any more...
Is there still another possibility than using a "Parallelport wraparound connector" seeing that I don't know how its made or used?
Who's got ideas?
Thx

Hi R2D2,
as I wrote in the problem description above, pressing C and F12, or any other of the F keys, or even all at the same time ;-) does not show me the boot sequence.
And of course I do use the right buttons in BIOS, as the "manual" is even on the same page, on the bottom. It just doesnt let me select and thus change the boot priority!!
Knowing or not the right buttons is really not my problem here - except you know how to toggle the different boot devices shown below the TOSHIBA start up screen (cf above)? Know what I mean??
I SUPPOSE the problem is that TOSHIBA notebooks use this utility called HWSetup accessible from inside windows to change the vital boot functions, but the password for that tool is lost! And my best guess is that this tool blocks the BIOS functions.
The only solution I have come up with is to build and use this thing that deactivates any system passwords, this Parallelport wraparound connector, but as I dont know how to build it, I was looking for another solution as I still dont want to believe that TOSHIBA actually made it impossible to formate this notebook without an operating system on it (or access to this HWSetup from windows respectively)!!!!!

  • Satellite A10-131 does not boot from Recovery or any other disk

I have a client who has a A10-131. I have had to reload the OS, but the new DVD-Writer will not boot the recovery CD or any other original Windows CD for that matter. Is anyone able to help with this problem. I need to find out what solution is possible with such a problem.
    Thank You.

How did you try to boot from the drive???
Did you change the boot order in the BIOS???
Usually several boot possibilities are available.
    1. You can press the C button immediately after notebook powering to detect the CD/DVD drive booting
    2. you can use the F12 button to get the booting menu
    3. you will change the boot order in BIOS to ODD firstly
But its interesting to know if your new ODD is compatible with the notebook

  • Changing boot priority to: HD, CD/DVD, USB

I am Tired of my MacbookPro trying to boot into my external usb Drives. Sometimes it won't boot at all when the Hard Drives are plugged in. But when they are unplugged my MacBookPro will boot right up. I would Like to set the Boot Priority to my  Hard Drive, DVD/CD Drive, USB. Or even Change it to DVD/CD Drive, Hard Drive, USB. But, I like to be able to have seamless integration of my MacBookPro to all the user peripherals I have connected. Here is a list of all the components. Separated between what messes with the bootup and what doesn't.
    Working:
    22" Monitor HP w2207 w/ 2 USB ports
Connected by adapters, DVI-to-HDMI, HDMI Cable, Moshi HDMI-to-MiniDisplay Port
Vantec LapCool 2 LPC-305 Notebook fan with 4 ports USB hub
Tripp-Lite 4Port USB 2.0 Hub Connected to HP Monitor
    Logitech K120 - USB Keyboard
    Razor Orochi USB/Bluetooth Mouse
    Creative SoundBlaster Audigy 2NX
    Not Working:
1.5 TB Seagate FreeAgent Desk External HDD
1.5 TB Western Digital Elements External HDD
500 GB Seagate FreeAgent Desk External HDD
Whenever I have the External HDD's connected to any of the USB ports anywhere on this setup, the MacBookPro won't boot into an OS only stays at grey screen. I want to just boot regularly without having to unplugging anything. If someone has a Solution, please help me.

Sorry, Mac's use EFI, not a BIOS where you can choose the boot priority.
When you need to boot off the installer disk, hold c while booting.
When you need to boot off another hard drive, hold option while booting.
When two Mac's are connected by a Firewire cable, you can hold T to boot the second Mac's boot drive to the first one's desktop.
If you want to choose which drive to boot off of as default, select it in the System Preferences.
I haven't yet booted OS X off a USB thumb drive yet, but I know it can be done, don't know the key for that, likely option.
If those other drives are not working, they shouldn't be hooked up to the computer at all, likely that's your problem?

  • P67A-GD65 B3 boot priority keeps changing with USB device plugged in

I just bought this board this week and updated to the latest ( 1.D0 ) bios and still having these issues. First issue is that when in bios, my mouse only moves up and down. Can't move it sideways. I have to use my keyboard to adjust settings. I have Logitech USB keyboard and mouse. Second major issue is that I have 4 drives in a Raid setup and 1 1tb drive for storage. The Raid drives are hooked up to the Intel controller and the 1tb drive is hooked up to the Marvel controller. Everytime I turn the pc on and off or do a reboot the bios keeps changing the hard drive priorities to having the 1tb drive 1st even though I had the Raid drive as being first. One thing I notice is that if I unplug my USB card reader it boots fine and doesn't change the drive priority. It would be a hassle if I have to unplug my card reader each time and plug it in when I use. Kinda defeats the purpose of a front panel card reader. BTw the reason I had to plug my front panel card reader into a passthrough USB is because the board only had one 2.0 USB header and that was already being used by my 2 front panel USB connectors which was also disappointing.

Ok, all testing complete. Installed a USB 3.0 external, & a WD 2TB HDD to the Marvell. Settings, Intel AHCI, Hot Plug enabled. All USB functions enabled. Marvell set for AHCI. Booted to Windows normally. Marvell HDD showed up at POST, but in Windows had to be activated & assigned a drive letter. Full shutdown. At fresh startup, all was normal in the boot sequence with the Intel OS HDD as the #1 Boot Option, & the Marvell HDD was listed in the BBS as available to assign it's boot order. Continued to Windows & did another full shutdown. This time on a fresh restart, the Boot Option Priority was still #1 the OS HDD, but, the BBS boot order was the Marvell HDD listed as first & the Intel OS HDD as the #2. This didn't really cause any problem to boot normally even though the HDD BBS sequence was out of order. Full shutdown. At this restart, the Marvell 'was' #1 in the Boot Option Priority & the Intel OS HDD didn't show in the BBS list. I went ahead & let it boot into Windows which it did without a hitch & then I shutdown right away. At this point I took the USB external out of the picture, & it had no affect one way or another as to the boot order. Full shutdown/fresh startup, but this time, set Marvell to IDE, changed Intel Hot Plug to all disabled, save & exit, next cycle, Marvell was #1 Boot Option Priority again. Set the Intel as #1 Boot Option Priority & also as #1 in the BBS, & at every shutdown & restart since, the Intel OS HDD has held as #1. I went back & changed the Marvell back to AHCI later, & it still held correctly as to what I had set in each fresh startups.
Summary? I believe the Marvell devices are being initiated first in the POST sequence. Disable of Hot Plug seemed to help. Since the Marvell has no way to disable Hot Plug, the HDD always shows up in the Sys Tray. My advice? Unless you have multiple ODD's, I would suggest to disable & not use the Marvell ports or controller at all, or use it for ODD's only. How your card reader fits in to all this, I have no way to test for that. Place the storage HDD in one of the Intel SATA III ports, leave the 4 HDD's in Raid in the 4 black SATA II ports, place the ODD if only one in the other Intel SATA III port. Bottom line; MSI Tech Support needs to be notified & involved with this. By your description, there is an obvious conflict with the card reader & how all the boot order is established. Although I did have the Marvell take over the boot order a couple of times, it never caused the OS to not load as normal or cause any problems while in Windows. http://support.msi.com/

  • Satellite A10 won't boot up - bad sectors on HDD

    Hallo,
    I got a Toshiba Satellite A10
    Model no: PSA10E-018EZ-DU
The problem is that te comp. won't start up.
there are some sectors of the HD bad or damaged
I did run chkdsk a few weeks ago it helped but now there again problems.
    so chkdsk is running again.
Is there a better program for checking your HD. or must I do something else?
    A new HD?
What kind of HD must I look for?
is any HD for a nootbook oke?
Or are there limitations for a HD of the satellite A10?
    Met vriendelijke groeten
    Kees Folmer
    http://www.csfolmer.nl

    HI Kees,
There are other utilities that you can use to check your hard drive (Norton Disk Doctor for example) but CHKDSK is as good as any others.
If you are getting repeated hard drive problems then this is a good indication that a new hard drive is required. I suggest you try to back-up your data while you still can. I am not aware of any limitations as to the capacity of any hard drive that you choose for your A10 but it must obviously be the same form factor as your existing drive. You may also wish to consider using a drive with a higher rotation speed than the original drive.

  • Shattered screen, external screen in standby with Satellite A10-S203

The screem of my Toshiba Satellite A10-S203 is shattered, it is all tripes, colors and black spaces. I connected the laptop with an external screen, but as soon as Windows starts the external screen goes on stand-by. How can I change this?

    Hello,
I have had this issue as well before. After Windows starts the video is reset resetting the video output to LCD instead of external monitor. Once this happens try using Fn+F5. If this does not work, you might be able to boot up and press F8, once it gives you the windows selection menu go to safe mode. Once there go to video properties and change the default settings to external monitor, and try rebooting normally. Should work wonders. Hope this helps, if not let me know.

  • HDD Group Boot Priority gets reset occasionally but not by me

    System Information:
    o  Pavilion H8-1050z
    o  AMI BIOS 6.12
    o  Windows 7 64-bit
o  Three internal SATA disk drives, but only one is bootable. Other two are user data.
I deleted the user data disks from HDD Group Boot Priority, but something puts them back at times.
When this happens, I get a boot error "No active partition".
This is easily fixed by entering BIOS setup and re-ordering or deleting the user data disks from HDD Group Boot Priority.
What resets HDD Group Boot Priority? I'm not doing it. Do I need to sequence the SATA cables?

My apologies for the slow response. I opened the case and verified the connections. They are in the table below. The Windows 7 disk is plugged into the first SATA port. This makes it puzzling since the BIOS ought to obey the sequence of the connections. The only things I do to the system is connect or disconnect external USB drives, flash memory drives and a scanner. The last time I had the case open was June 2011. That was when I installed DISK 1 and 2. Since that time, the HDD Boot Group Order has changed three times. I have no idea what I did to cause the BIOS error. Each time, I just executed shutdown and the next day I got the error when I powered on the PC.
The last time  changed the HDD Group Boot Priority was
    1 DISK2
    2 EXTERNAL USB DRIVE
    3 DISK 0
    4 DISK 1
    5 EXTERNAL USB DRIVE
The internal cables have been connected in this order since June 2011:
SATA PORT, COLOR, DISK NUMBER, DISK CONTENT
    SATA1, DARK BLUE, DISK 0, WINDOWS 7
SATA2, WHITE, DISK 1, DOWNLOADED APPLICATION INSTALLERS,IMAGE BACKUPS, LOGS
SATA3, LIGHT BLUE, DISK 2, AUDIO, VIDEO, BOOKS
SATA4, PEACH, BD/CD/DVD, BLUE RAY DRIVE
    SATA5, RED, NO CONNECTION
    SATA6, BLACK, NO CONNECTION
The motherboard is an H-RS880- micro-ATX form factor (ALOE), Chipset AMD 785G.

  • How to recover the Satellite A10?

    I have a Satellite A10.
After insering the recovery disk 1 the A tab instead of the C tab. Now I'm in DOS and I have no idea how to get back to my main page or D drive to continue with the recovery. I have no idea how to use DOS.

    Hi
To be honest Im a little bit confused
The recovery procedure is very easy and you dont need to do anything in DOS.
In order to recover the notebook you have to boot from the recovery disk and have to follow the instruction on the screen.
The Satellite A10 series is old and the recovery procedure is different to the new procedure but you should definitely receive some messages how to proceeds
    I recommend repeating the recover again;
Put the right recovery disk in the drive and boot from the CD by pressing the C button. You could use F12 and then you could choose CD/DVD drive in the boot menu

  • Satellite C850 - boot from DVD issue - want to replace Win8 with Win7U

Got a new C850-1JZ yesterday and am trying to replace pre-installed Win 8 with Windows 7. I did create the recovery media (3 DVDs).
The laptop is driving me "insane" as it seems to block any attempt to boot anything else other than Win8 on the preinstalled hdd.
1.) Inserted Win 7 Ultimate DVD and tried to boot, would not boot from disk.
2.) Loaded advanced boot menu and tried to boot from ODD, would not boot from disk it. (Options are LAN, USB, HDD, and ODD (assuming this is optical disk drive)
3.) Changed regular bios settings boot priority to boot from ODD first, then HDD, would not boot from disk.
4.) Learned there is a "security boot protection" mechanism enabled by default in the bios. Turned it off. Machine starts loading from ODD and says "Windows is loading files" then hangs. This is a MS original Win7 Ultimate disk from the Microsoft store, no scratches. Makes no sense. We actually have 2 of them, so I tried the other, same result.
5.) Thought screw that, let's just put the hard drive from the other computer (T61) in here then and do clean new setup another time. Replaced hdd with other sata hdd that has Win 7 ultimate installed and system configured. When booting from hdd, it says "No OS" found and reboots. When booting from ODD, it starts with windows is loading files again and then freezes.
What kind of other extra protection/virus blocker/stupid setting am I missing here? This is puzzling me. Thanks.

*Thanks as***, that solves the problem.*
After 10 days Toshiba Support in Germany came back with the same answer.
Basically it seems the UEFI Firmware has some reference to Win 8 or the original OS and key and boat loader that is checks, and you cannot load anything else until you disable it by:
    1) In the BIOS, disable "secure boot" mode
    2) In the BIOS advanced settings, switch from UEFI to CMS mode.
Then you should be able to install anything as the new OS.
Also, if you want to write down your product key / serial number , since it is not printed anywhere (e.g. no sticker on the bottom of the laptop) [Belarc Advisor - Free Personal PC Audit|http://belarc.com/free_download.html] is a good tool to retrieve this from the registry and write it down.
As far as I know it's "glued" to this particular hardware, so not portable, but it might be a good idea to write it down in case you lose the system recovery disk but would want to re-install it with the original serial number.

  • Does Satellite A10 and S1410 have the same hinges?

I need to replace hinges on a S1410 and I found a seller carrying A10 hinges. Toshiba Satellite A10 and S1410 look similar in the photos so I wonder if they share the same kind of hinges. Can anyone help me?

    Hi Joao
Just Toshiba service partner can give you a proper answer. In my opinion you should contact them. Just on this way you will be 100% sure.
In my opinion it is not the same kind of hinges. If you look carefully those two units are absolutely different.

  • Satellite A10 drivers for Windows 7

    Hi,
I just revived my old Satellite A10 by installing Windows 7, however I cannot find any drivers to suit the new OS. Tried the Vista 32 bit drivers from the Toshiba Downloads page with no luck.
Are there, or will there, be any drivers to suit the A10 model for Windows 7, and if so, where can I find them?
I know it is an older machine, but I would like to keep it alive for networking!
    Thanks,
    Beno

    Hi
Im wondering that you want to use Windows 7 on this oldie
In my opinion you should be happy with preinstalled OS from Toshiba instead new Windows 7 where you dont get any drivers.
Your only chance is Vista drivers. The most of them are also work on Windows 7.
If not, boot from recovery disk and install this OS. ;)

  • What CD/DVD drive is compatible with Satellite A10-S103

I am using portable computer Toshiba Satellite A10-S103 and I am about to replace original CD/DVD-ROM drive with a new one which can also write CDs and DVDs.
However, I have been given a notice, that after installing new DVD drive the "IDE #1 error" message may appear. According to my knowledge, this error can be avoided by replacing the old drive with a new one that requires the same Primary/Secondary Master/Slave/Cable select settings as the old one.
Can you recommend me a DVD-RW drive that could replace the old DVD-ROM drive and would work without any further HW adjustments?
The new DVD-RW drive should be similar to i.e.
However, I was not able to decide whether this device will or will not work in my computer as I do not know settings of the original DVD drive.
My original Toshiba DVD drive information as follow:
    1. 'Model No.' SD-C2612
    2. 'ROM Ver.' 1315
    3. 'Serial No.' 394N002659
    4. 'Ver. No.' 302.
    The computer is already out-of-warranty
    Thank you.

    >However, I have been given a notice, that after installing new DVD drive the "IDE #1 error" message may appear. According to my knowledge, this error can be avoided by replacing the old drive with a new one that requires the same Primary/Secondary Master/Slave/Cable select settings as the old one.
You are right. The IDE #1 error appears because the BIOS doesnt recognize the new internal CD/DVD drive due to the wrong master/slave/c-sel settings.
Usually such settings are fix and cannot be changed like on the external ODDs using other jumper position.
The firmware controls the internal notebooks ODD settings.
Therefore the usage of the supported and compatible ODDs is very important.
Sorry, but I didnt find any details about compatible CD/DVD drives.
Did you take a look into the user manual of your notebook series???
In my user manual I found some info about the compatible drives with my notebook.
So maybe you are a lucky man and your user manual will provide some useful informations.

    Hey all!
New ID as i'm rubbish at remembering passwords/log on emails....
I've got a Satellite Pro A10 that needs a new keyboard - there's loads floating around on ebay for the Satellite A10 - but not the Pro - now i'm almost 100% it'll be the same keyboard - right? the 'Pro' bit just usually denounces extras bits and qhizzy things - but basically they're the same hardware platform underneath - i.e. the same keyboard between the Sat A10 and Sat Pro A10
    Anyone?
:D thanks in advance for letting me sleep at night!

I agree with you. There is no much difference and the notebook construction is the same.
I am 100% sure the keyboard is the same.

  • Lost COM/LPT ports on Satellite A10 and cannot use modem

My Satellite A10 has lost ports and I can't use my modem.
    What can I do ?

    Hi
I think you should delete the modem from the device manager. Then reboot the unit and the OS should recognize the modem again. Then you can install the modem driver again.
All this should be done automatically and you dont need to add any ports.
The properties should be enabled if you have the administrator rights.
    Thanks and good luck
