Satellite A10 - doesn't boot up properly

I have an A10 Satellite and i can't boot up even last known good configuration or safe mode doesnt work and if its booting up it will take a long time but a blue screen appears and says that an error occured and its preventing any harm to the hard disk.
I put in the recovery cd but i didnt get the xp cause it says starting windows 98 but im running an xp pro which i got when i bought the laptop. So if any one out there can help???

HI Johan,
If you are unable to boot from your hard drive then your only other option will be to boot from a CD-ROM.
Most commercially available backup utilities (Norton Ghost, Acronis True Image, etc.) include such a bootable CD. The Product Recovery CD supplied with your notebook is most likely a cut-down version of Norton Ghost which is specifically designed to format your hard drive and then restore a 'Ghost' image of the original OEM software.
It is quite possible for your hard drive to be damaged and still have the LED come on when it is being accessed. The damage could be to the physical mechanism of the drive, or to the surface coating of the platters etc. A bootable CD from one of the backup utilities will probably include a version of CHKDSK which you can run to test the integrity of your hard drive. Norton, for example, include a copy of Disk Doctor.
If you have a copy of the original Windows installation CD, you can boot from that into the recovery console, and try to repair whatever is damaged on your hard drive assuming the problem is only corrupt or missing files. In principle, you could use the XP Home Edition CD to do this only if the damaged files are not specific to XP Pro in which case they will not be on the HE disk.

  • Re: Satellite A300 doesn't boot

    Hi!
I have a Toshiba A300 for a few years. I have upgraded it with a new RAM module last week. I tested it with memtetst 86, and everything was fine, but this week it started to act strangely.
The notebook doesn't boot up properly, just spinning the ODD drive (the orange led is flashing), however the ODD is the last boot device in the bios.
Has this problem a connection with the new ram, or is it just the ODDs fault?

This means, that the machine doesn't boot. I have just black screen, no toshiba logo. I found a thread [here|http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=63497&tstart=15] and my problem seems similar to it.
I'm going to try to remove the ram next time the problem occurs.

  • Satellite A10 won't boot up - bad sectors on HDD

    Hallo,
    I got a Toshiba Satellite A10
    Model no: PSA10E-018EZ-DU
The problem is that te comp. won't start up.
there are some sectors of the HD bad or damaged
I did run chkdsk a few weeks ago it helped but now there again problems.
    so chkdsk is running again.
Is there a better program for checking your HD. or must I do something else?
    A new HD?
What kind of HD must I look for?
is any HD for a nootbook oke?
Or are there limitations for a HD of the satellite A10?
    Met vriendelijke groeten

    HI Kees,
There are other utilities that you can use to check your hard drive (Norton Disk Doctor for example) but CHKDSK is as good as any others.
If you are getting repeated hard drive problems then this is a good indication that a new hard drive is required. I suggest you try to back-up your data while you still can. I am not aware of any limitations as to the capacity of any hard drive that you choose for your A10 but it must obviously be the same form factor as your existing drive. You may also wish to consider using a drive with a higher rotation speed than the original drive.

  • Satellite L850 doesn't boot

Hi, I'm having problems with my L850-150
The thing is it doesn't boot. Power led turns on, Nums Lock led turns on, fan turns on, and nothing more happens, so it's not a power supply problem.
I've been reading in this forum that updating the bios could solve the issue, but as I've seen in the instructions, it seems that the update needs to be done on Windows environment, and as I've said, the computer doesn't boot, so I can't do the BIOS update.
Is there any other solution? Is there any other way to update the BIOS?
    Thanks in advance.

Can you please tell us more about your notebook and all you have done last days?
Do you use original OS and factory settings?
Have you done anything that can be responsible for this (software or hardware update/upgrade)?
It is hard to believe that something like this happen for one moment to another without any reason.
You are right, it has nothing to do with power supply, there is something else but on this virtual way it is not easy to offer some precise diagnostic.
In worst case contact nearest Toshiba service provider or your local dealer and ask for help.

  • Satellite L doesn't boot up after restart or shutting down

    Hello,
My laptop after restart or shutting down doesn't starting.
I need to turn off the computer and wait 10 seconds and try again, after that it start ok.
    Any suggest?
    Thanks,
    Dvir

To be honest I dont know if there is the problem actually. Most important thing is that your notebook starts. I dont know if this is so important if this happen after 5 or 10 seconds.
We dont know which notebook model do you have, how old it is, since when you have noticed this strange issue, so it is not easy to understand the problem.
    >My laptop after restart or shutting down doesn't starting.
It is not easy to understand this statement. Does it mean that when you click on restart or shutdown option in start menu notebook react properly but cannot restart or be switched on immediately?

  • Satellite A doesn't boot up - Windows cannot start

I got an update for windows internet explorer but it never started to download and i couldn't close the download window.
Then my laptop froze so I switched it off and tried to reboot.
It comes up with all kinds of options but non work they either freeze or at the end reboot the laptop and then it says windows could not boot and it does a check but this stil doesn't work.
Please help its only 20 days old.

    Hello
You can try to start your notebook in Safe mode (F8) and when notebook starts use systemrestore option and rollback operating system to the earlier time before you done this update.
    Maybe this will help.
If not I recommend you to install OS again using recovery image. If you have brand new notebook you can do this using F8 option Repair my computer.
If you need more assistance how to do this please let us know.

  • Satellite A300 doesn't boot - black screen afer Toshiba splash screen

My laptop (Satellite A300) has recently a big problem after when i turn it on.
When I turn on my laptop, after big logo of Toshiba in red i should go to Windows but it just stop and i only see a black page and nothing happens after that, even if i wait for ages, that black page stays same.
I don't know what to do?

I tried this method before. it doesn't work. The problem is not with windows. Once i notice this issue, i installed the Windows vista again and i still face with this black page... but let me tell you something strange... this can fix temporarily when i press F2 button when i see the Red Toshiab logo and then i go to exit to save and chagen and then i restart, and windows runs....it's quite strange because i change nothing and i just save and exit.!!!!!!!! I REALLY NEED HELP WITH THIS BECAUSE I AM SORT OF SUSPICIOUS THAT SOME HARDWARE IN MY LAPTOP HAS SOME PROBLEM..... I DON'T WANT THIS TO GET WORSE :(

  • Satellite M200 doesn't boot after RAM 4GB upgrade

    Hi,
I recently upgraded my RAM just to speed things up a little as RAM is soo cheap these days.
    I have a M200 T2130 Vista came with 1GB (2*512) sticks.
The new sticks are 2 *2GB Dane-elec DDR2 pc2-5300, when I put the two in and rebooted the hard drive light came on briefly and then it just stayed idol, no POST, Bios options.
I tried using a single 512 stick with both new sticks and they both work in a 2.5GB setup just not together also this only works when the 512 stick is in the more internal slot and not the other way around.
So if anyone has had a similar prob or can give me some advice that would be great, I'm not to sure if the motherboard can support 4GB?
    Thanks, Dave.

    Hi
There are two possibilities why your M200 doesnt boot after the RAM upgrade.
Firstly the installed RAM could be not compatible or could be faulty or the notebook doesnt support the 4GB RAM.
I dont know what M200 do you have exactly but you could check the installed chipset and could check on the Intel page if this chipset would support the 4GB RAM.

  • Satellite A10 - boot priority needs to be changed

    Hi everyone,
I've got an old Satellite A10 here, and I'm supposed to put a new operating system on it.
Problem: It doesn't let me boot from CD/DVD!!!
In BIOS (APCI BIOS version = 1.30), I cannot change the boot priority, that is I cannot set the DVD drive as first boot device.
Pressing F12 or "C" when switching on the notebook doesn't show boot options either.
In another thread I read that one can change the boot device by selecting the boot devices' images that can be seen below the TOSHIBA sign when the notebook's power has just been turned on. How do you do that? Arrow keys and TAB dont work for me....
In the windows startmenu, there's the TOSHIBA utility HWSetup that is password protected. In the manual it says that you can change boot priority there (from inside windows!), but unfortunately the owner does not remember any password he might have set, so I cannot change boot sequence from there either.
but anyway it must be possible to boot from CD without accessing windows, in case windows doesn't work any more...
Is there still another possibility than using a "Parallelport wraparound connector" seeing that I don't know how its made or used?
    Who's got ideas?
    Thx

    Hi R2D2,
as I wrote in the problem description above, pressing C and F12, or any other of the F keys, or even all at the same time ;-) does not show me the boot sequence.
And of course I do use the right buttons in BIOS, as the "manual" is even on the same page, on the bottom. It just doesnt let me select and thus change the boot priority!!
Knowing or not the right buttons is really not my problem here - except you know how to toggle the different boot devices shown below the TOSHIBA start up screen (cf above)? Know what I mean??
I SUPPOSE the problem is that TOSHIBA notebooks use this utility called HWSetup accessible from inside windows to change the vital boot functions, but the password for that tool is lost! And my best guess is that this tool blocks the BIOS functions.
The only solution I have come up with is to build and use this thing that deactivates any system passwords, this Parallelport wraparound connector, but as I dont know how to build it, I was looking for another solution as I still dont want to believe that TOSHIBA actually made it impossible to formate this notebook without an operating system on it (or access to this HWSetup from windows respectively)!!!!!

  • Satellite A300 - Turns on but doesn't boot

    Hello,
I have a Satellite A300. I have had several probems while booting since 2 months ago: When I want to turn on my laptop, it turns on but the screen keeps black and it doesn't load the "Toshiba Leading Innovation" screen. The "Satellite" light (at the left of the mousepad) is on (it would only switch on a second while booting and then would switch off) and it doesn't turn off.
I have to retry for so many times with all the possibilities: Without battery, only with AC adapter, with both of them but it doesn't boot. I don't know what can I do. I have always to hibernate my laptop bacause I am afraid to can not boot it the day after.
Could you help me? If it cares: I had to buy a new battery (not Toshiba original) because I had to change the original one. No more changes in my laptop.
Thank you very much and sorry for my english writing :S
    Diego

Thank you for your reply PinkPanther,
I think it isn't fault of the battery, because my laptop doesn't load the Bios neither the "Toshiba Leading Innovation" screen not even tryng to switch on only with the original Toshiba AC adapter.
About the external monitor: it's true many times I connect my TV by the HDMI port. But i think it isn't the problem. As I said first, there's a light (is writen "Satellite") at the left of the mousepad that lights when the laptop turns on and when comes this "Toshiba Leading Innovation" screen, suddenly it switchs off. So when I have this problem with my laptop, this light keeps on. I think that if it was problem off the monitor, this light should turn off and load the OS, and then I must hear the sound at the begining of the OS...
As you say, maybe it's a serious probelm... I posted here because I hoped that anyone had the same problem, resolved it and could help me

    Hi

  • Tecra S1 doesn't boot and hangs at (boot) splash screen

    Tecra S1 Model PT831E-107EQ-GR
Problems started a month ago. It randomly didn't booted. After some power off/on tries it finally booted and worked properly. Because it happened more often I've bought a new hard drive (Toshiba 40 GB). I've had Acronis True Image and planned to make a disk clone to the new drive. The problem is that a notebook now doesn't boot anymore so I cannot boot it from A CD nor hard drive. It stops at "In Touch..." logo with "Press [F12] for the boot device selection menu" text and doesn't react any key. I tried to boot with no CD, no hard drive - the same. I also connected internal HD using ATA-To-USB adapter - the same. Does it mean that's not a disk problem but motherboard or other components? Is it possible to enter BIOS before boot selection screen?
    Regards,
    Jacek

Problem solved. There was a broken PCB under the CPU socket. I've found that pressing with my finger and holding CPU while booting allowed to startup the system while releasing the finger caused system hanging and its total crash. Our local service tried to repair it but with no success. Finally two days ago we've found a working motherboard (a used one) for about 200 USD and now I'm waiting for installing it in the laptop. Th regular price for a new one (about 400 Euro) is too much, but 200 USD is OK. I do like the laptop because of its ports (LPT, RS232). It's used for programming and controlling some older devices. Newer laptops have no LPTs nor RS232s and it's not easy to find a working USB adapter because the software we're using is even from DOS times and has hard-coded IRQs for those ports.
Anyway, I hope it'll back from the service fresh and new, and of course working ;)
    Thank you for your tips.

    Jacek

  • IBook G4 doesn't boot

    Hi,
I just bought a broken iBook G4 on eBay thinking I would be able to fix it without replacing the logic board. The iBook doesn't boot properly. When I press the power button, I can hear the SuperDrive start up, then the screen with the gray Apple shows up and the OS starts to load normally. But when that screen goes away and the blue background comes up, it just stops there... no "Loading Mac OS X" window with the progress bar. I figured that this may have been a deviation of the iBook G4 logic board problem where people used clamps to pin down the left side of the iBook and hold the faulty chip to the logic board, allowing the iBook to boot. I gave it a shot, but instead of using clamps I tried putting a small rubber shim on top of the faulty chip inside of the case to see if it would work. The first time I booted it up after I placed the shim, it worked fantastically. No hanging at the loading screen, no sluggish performance.
That was the way it worked for a couple of days. However, the booting problem soon returned. I tried booting from a Tiger reinstall disk to verify/repair the disk/permissions, but the iBook hung at the same blue screen. I didn't have the original install discs that came with the iBook, so I couldn't run a hardware test on it. I also tried booting from a Leopard install disk to no avail. Resetting the PRAM, NVRAM, and PMU did nothing as well. I even went so far as to replace the RAM in the expansion slot with RAM that I knew was working, but the iBook remained broken.
The strangest part of this was that the iBook worked perfectly on another computer when put into TDM. I was able to verify/repair both permissions and the disk from my Power Mac G5. Even though the iBook's screen becomes scrambled with random colors and lines after a few minutes in TDM, it functions just fine on another computer. I was even able to successfully boot my Power Mac and iMac from the iBook in TDM. Seeing as this was possible, I tried reinstalling Tiger on the iBook (in TDM) remotely from my Power Mac. It worked like a charm. Following that reinstall, I downloaded and installed all of the software updates. Then I tried to boot the iBook natively again, but to no avail. It still hung at that same blue screen.
At this point, I suspect that there is something wrong with the logic board that I am unable to fix without completely replacing the logic board itself. That's sort of disappointing, but I guess that's just the way it is. If anyone has any input to this, feel free to respond. Here are the iBook's specs:
    CPU: 1Ghz (1064Mhz)
RAM: 256MB soldered, 1 expansion slot open
    HDD: 30GB 4200 rpm
    Screen Size: 12 inches
    Optical Drive: Combo Drive
For the complete list of specs, see this page: http://support.apple.com/specs/iBook/iBookG4_Early2004.html
    Thanks,
    -Trevor

    Trevor,
I just took the heatsink off and I see the GPU. However, there are multiple parts to it.
So that would be called a daughter card. The problem with a daughter card is that the possibility of a reballing/reflowing failure is increased.
Should I place a shim over the whole chip or just one part of it?
It's that whole daughter card that has the problem. I've got a post around here somewhere. Here's the thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6051715&#6051715
    The picture is here:
    http://tinyurl.com/3835w2
Also, what material should I use for a shim here?
Probably the most elegant solution would be to use thermal pads like the ones that are already there. Don't build them up too much.
    What about from underneath?
My fear is that a metal shim will short the GPU and damage the logic board permanently. But I also fear that an insulating shim will not conduct heat as it is supposed to and cause the GPU to overheat.
Dale at Superior says that chip doesn't put out much heat but better to be overly cautious. I wouldn't use metal since there's no give to it. What's directly under that 9200 daughter card? One of my thoughts was to shim from both sides.
Where did you put that first shim?

  • Shattered screen, external screen in standby with Satellite A10-S203

The screem of my Toshiba Satellite A10-S203 is shattered, it is all tripes, colors and black spaces. I connected the laptop with an external screen, but as soon as Windows starts the external screen goes on stand-by. How can I change this?

    Hello,
I have had this issue as well before. After Windows starts the video is reset resetting the video output to LCD instead of external monitor. Once this happens try using Fn+F5. If this does not work, you might be able to boot up and press F8, once it gives you the windows selection menu go to safe mode. Once there go to video properties and change the default settings to external monitor, and try rebooting normally. Should work wonders. Hope this helps, if not let me know.

  • Can't boot Windows properly

    Hi!
I got some new parts for my comp about 1 week ago. I have been running this system stable for a few days when suddenly the computer wouldn't boot windows properly! It enters the Windows loading screen and then nothing happens.
After like 10 restarts i can enter windows again.
Safe mode with networking works perfectly and the windows has a clean install.
I have tried to boot with only 1 mem-module, then i tried some different sets and i tried to increase the voltage as well on both CPU and memory but no difference whatsoever.
I am not overclocking although i tried overclocking with the built-in system for overclocking but got a bluescreen so i set it back.
When i am in windows, working or gaming then everything runs smooth and i experience no strange things at all.
Please help, this is getting really frustrating...

Yes i have tried both the system restore, full system virus scan, scan for spyware and stuff, and the choice before the safe mode with networking, no difference there :(
As of now, i uninstalled my graphics driver (Catalyst) and rebooted a few times, and it reboots. I reinstalled the graphicsdriver but only the driver and not the catalyst center and it rebooted properly. this doesn't make any sense at all to me. Do you think my PSU is powerful enough?
