Satellite A100-847 - upgrade advice

Hello,
I'm using Satellite A100-847 (PSAA9E) for almost two years now. 2 year warranty period be over in month, so I guees it is good time for an upgrade. I could use more RAM and a faster HDD (for CAD purposes mostly when I'm on the run) so I would like to know more about it.
*What I already found out is that my notebook:*
(please say if I'm wrong with something)
1) ...Can take 2 modules of So-DIMM DDR2; max 4GB; which means 2X2GB. I already have 2X512GB, and this is not enough.
- The question is which DDR2 memory!? The FSB is running on 667 MHz, so I guess I should buy PC-5300/667 or even 6400/800?
- Which is the best memory for my notebook? The one which doesn't heat up a lot!? Which model is cool enough?
2) ...Has a Hitachi Travelstar 5K100, 2.5", 5400RPM, 8MB cache, 100GB SATA drive. Capacity is enough for me, but it is way too slow. So I guess I should for a 7200RPM 16MB cache drive.
- The question here is does my notebook support SATA2 or is it just SATA1? Which shlould I buy?
- Does my notebook support 7200RPM drive?
- Will my notebook overheat with this drive?
3) ...Could have a more efficient cooling system. Is there any solution to this?
Thank you in advance,
adambar

Hello
Googling around Ive found follow information:
The computer has two SO DIMMs slot comes standard with DDRII 4200 module. It
supports PC2-4200 and uses SO DIMMs (DDRII SDRAM) driven at 1.8 V, accepting
BTO/CTO for your memory requirements. It can incorporate up to 4 GB of main
memory.
Using the following sizes of memory modules:
256 MB (16M168P)/533/667 MHZ
512 MB (32M168P)/533/667 MHZ
1024 MB (64Mx16x8P)/533/667 MHZ
If you want to use maximum RAM you must use two 2 GB. Toshiba recommends using
2 x 2 GB PA3513U-1M2G DDR2 RAM. Alternative to this RAM module are high quality Kingston memory modules.
About HDD I can say follow:
The HDD interface conforming to Serial ATA (for 40/60/80/100/120 GB).
The computer accommodates one 2.5-inch HDD with any of the following storage capacities:
40 GB (9.5 mm thick) SATA (5,400rpm)
60 GB (9.5 mm thick) SATA (5,400rpm/7200rpm)
80 GB (9.5 mm thick) SATA (5,400rpm/7200rpm)
100 GB (9.5 mm thick) SATA (5,400rpm/7200rpm)
120 GB (9.5 mm thick) SATA (5400rpm)
As far as I know SATA2 is backward compatible and theoretically you can use it but I am not sure about that. If I were you I would by SATA1 HDD.
As you can see Toshiba has tested 7200rpm HDDs with this notebook model and you can use it too.
Overheat maybe not but I can imagine that plastic cover will be warmer than before. Be just sure the notebook is placed properly and nothing blocks cooling fan.
More efficient cooling system? I dont know what you mean exactly butt you can try something like this .

  • RAM upgrade for a Satellite A100-847

I would like to upgrade the RAM for my A100-847 from my current 512 MB by adding another module for 512 MB but i face a compatibility problem because looking at the manual the only compatible modules are the following:
    256 MB: PA3389U-1M25
    512 MB: PA3412U-1M51
    1 GB: PA3411U-1M1G
I tried looking for a module with these codes but I didn't find any in Romania. I could find a module from another manufacturer with the same specification but I don't know if these would function properly .
So I need some advice .
    Thanks,
    Bobby

    Hi,
which manufacturer you have seen? If they have the same specs, then they should fit. The best decision would be to take some kingston or crucial modules. They were tested to work well with toshibas, so just consider buying some kingstons with the specs of the original toshiba modules and have fun with them.
In case of some further question just ask.
    Greetings

  • What does the recovery CD contain - Satellite A100-847

    Hello guys
I had a few questions about the recovery CD:
1- What does the recovery CD contain? and the other CD which is called Media something?
2- Does it have Windows in it? So I can format my PC using it? And from where can i find the product key (windows key)
3- What if i wanted to use the CD without formatting? etc. installing the softwares?
Sorry for asking too much but my laptop started disturbing me. Just for knowledge my Laptop is satellite A100-847

    Hello
I will try to answer your question.
1 Recovery media contains recovery image. Recovery image is a kind of package that contains operating system, all necessary drivers, Toshiba tools and utilities and some additional software like WinDVD or Norton antivir application. Media something is not known to me. Maybe exact description can help.
2 Yes it has Windows OS. Yes you can format your notebook using it. You do not need product key. Just install it.
3 I do not know what you mean. The fact is that HDD will be formatted before you start recovery installation. Be sure all your important data are saved on some external device.

  • XD-bit (CPU feature) disabled/unavailable for Satellite A100-PSAA9

Last week I bought the notebook Toshiba Satellite A100-847 (Satellite A100-SPAA9) that has an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, model T7200.
According to Intel specifications this processor (like all Core and Core 2 processors) has the XD-bit feature, known in Windows as DEP. I had the unpleasant surprise to find out that this feature is
reported by Windows as unavailable (in hardware). I understood from the electronic manual on the recovery CD (which is an older edition than the printed manual that comes in the package) that I can make this feature
available (for some older Satellite models) but I couldn't find any option in my BIOS to do this (my BIOS is made by Phoenix, version 2.0).
I really want to know how can I make this feature available/active as my processor supports it and so does the operating system bought together with the laptop and more than that, this feature is something beneficial - especially designed for security reasons and supported by all modern processors and operating systems.
Do I have to wait for an updated BIOS to include this option (to activate the XD bit feature) or to have it automaticaly set as active/available (instead of disabled/unavailable)?
I am expecting a well documented response from somebody who knows what I am talking about.
    Thank you very much.

First of all, Ive started this topic hoping that I can obtain a technical and to the point response, regarding exactly what I have asked. I do not wish for this thread to become a technical glossary, because any user that has the slightest notion of using Google or Wikipedia can easily find out what XD-bit, DEP and PAE mean (and those who dont already know what these mean cannot help me).
I am compelled to repeat myself: my problem addresses the technical personnel, who really understand and know what I am talking about; it is not addressed to the average Joe who likes to hear himself talking, but not to the point.
Secondly, anyone can find out that the Intel T7200 processor has the XD-bit feature just by searching on the
Intel site: he will only have to type the words T7200 specifications into the search box; but anyway, here is the link youve asked me for:
    http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sspec=sl9sf
Thirdly, my system has to support the XD-bit feature because:
    a) the operating system acquired together with the notebook is Windows XP SP2 Home Edition (so it is SP2 and yes it is in the PAE mode!)
    b) the mainboard and the Intel 945PM chipset support this feature it is the standard Intel NAPA platform (and, just for the record, the only difference between this notebook and another notebook I own is just the processor, which is Core Duo simple -Yonah-, not Core 2 Duo -Merom- as this Toshiba notebook has; and the other notebook has the XD-bit feature enabled and Windows uses it)
Ive also tried to install Windows XP SP2 Professional and I used diagnostic and information programs (e.g. Sisoftware Sandra) but with the same result: I am reported that the processor does not have the XD-bit feature or this feature is deactivated.
Taking into account that Intel has blessed this processor model with the XD-bit feature and Toshiba has used at its turn the omnipotent Intel 945PM chipset which has nothing against the XD-bit feature mentioned above it results that this feature has been deactivated most likely by BIOS.
Ive started the topic [hoping that this forum is visited by Toshiba technicians in order to find out the problems their clients/users encounter and to act accordingly by offering them their support.
PS: I am not mad, not at all; I do appreciate the interest shown in my problem, but I do not wish to accept/encourage useless and pointless discussions.
If you wish, we can have other discussions on hardware topics but not on this thread in which I only hope to obtain the solution to my problem (solution that can come by a possible update of the actual version of the BIOS present on the site).

  • Satellite A100 display blank but external vga works

    Hello,
my two year old Satellite A100-847 display stopped working. I used external VGA monitor for a few days,
then switched back to laptop LCD and found out it doesnt work. It doesn't show anything , only the grey backlight.
The LCD doesn't work even at boot nor does in WIN XP, nor at battery power or AC. I have tried to dismantle the display according to some guide
to check if the signal cable is firmly at its place in the connection to LCD, but it hasn't solved the problem.
I use the original BIOS and somewhat updated nvidia display driver, they worked fine up to now, so I suggest its not a bios/driver problem.
(but maybe it is, so I tried to install original display driver with no effect. I dont want to try to flash new bios, and end up with f....ed up display and bios too)
The video output to external monitor is completely fine, from boot or in win.
Does anybody see a solution, please? Or should I only go to service provider...
    thank you
    Pepe

    Hello
In my opinion you should definitely go to the nearest Authorized service provider. They can say for sure what the problem is and, of course, order by Toshiba the right part for exchange.
It is definitely hardware issue and it can be the FL inverter, especially if you see the something on the screen but almost black and grey.

  • Memory upgrade on a Satellite A100-912

I own a Satellite a100-912 and I want to upgrade its memory!
As it seems, this model supports only PC2-4200 DDR2 SODIMM modules (533 Mhz). Before bying a memory module that might regret, I want to know if there will be any compatibility issues if I use to this laptop PC2-6400 DDR2 SODIMM module (800 Mhz).
Is it going to work even at lower clock speed (533 Mhz) or is it going to be a total waste of money?

As far as I know the FSB is able to handle 667Mhz modules.
You can use lower modules (533Mhz) without any problems but modules with higher Mhz will not run with full speed due to the limited FSB.
So I dont recommend buying 800Mhz modules. Firstly they are not supported and secondly its waste of money!

  • Graphics upgrade for a Satellite A100-163

    Hi,
I was wondering if it is possible to upgrade the graphics in the Toshibe Satellite A100-163. In the specifications on this website, it states that it is connected by the new PCI Express x16 bus, does this mean that it is infact a seperate graphics card in my laptop that at a later date I would be able to upgrade?
    Thank you for your help,
    M_Taylor40

I was wondering if this is one of the new laptop motherboards with a PCI express card connected through a PCI Express port tho, as you can now get laptops that have a PCI express port for future graphics card upgrade. I know that a standard desktop card would not go in a laptop, but laptop graphics cards are beginning to appear but they are still quite expensive and hard to get.
Just under the speficiations of this laptop, the graphics bus is the PCI Express x16, and I just wanted to know if this was either the graphics where of the built-in adapter type which was connected through the PCI Express x16 bus, or that it was in fact a seperate graphics adapter that was connected to a PCI Express x16 port. As if it was the port version, then technically the existing graphics card could be removed and replaced with another card.

  • Satellite A100 shuts down after memory upgrade

Consider me as 1 of the thickie bunch.. Not even sure wot im talkin bout but here goes n e way...........
    Have a Satellite A100 570 ( PSAA2E)..........
Have tried several different online sites lookin for memory upgrade. Didn't have the witt to use toshiba site...... Ended up going with Crucial.........
Ran diagnostic on laptop and was sent the module a needed.or so i thought....... wrong 1 or 1s as i bought 2 x 1G modules in order to " double up".....
Got my money back as they were not compatable with my system.. something to do with density problems....
Tried company called OFFTEK........ they seemed to know what they were talkin about....... I have from Offtek. at present a..........
200 Pin 1.8v DDR2 PC2-4200 SoDimm....... but Toshiba have recommended below......
    1GB PC2-4300 DDR2 Memory (533MHz)
    Part Number: PA3411U-2M1G
    1024MB (1GB) Memory PC2-4300 DDR2 (533MHz)
Theres an obvious difference ...... 4200 and 4300. But im not sure if its a significant difference........... or what it means
Have updated bios to most recent version and basically updated everything toshiba had to offer for this model...........
Ran EVEREST and it recognises the 1G module but when i take out the original 512mb module the laptop starts for about 3 seconds then shuts down...
this repeats about 5 times then complete shutdown.....
I dont like opening the back cover too often but this is the 3rd module ....
Not sure whats meant to happen if the module is working...i.e start up message..not sure if windows recognises 1G module....
Would it be safer bet to send Offtek module and stick with toshiba option.....
    Thanks in advance.....

Cheers R2........ suppose at this stage i could start rhyming off a load of star wars lines but uve probably hears them all before.......
N e way......... checked out the link u posted..........very useful......
The module described is identical to what i have.............As with previous reply ( above ) im not sure what to do.........might take up Offteks offer of replacing the module but slightly concerned it might have same outcome......Still not happy bout opening the cover so much........nut needs must i suppose

  • Upgrade CPU for Satellite A100-683

What CPU can be used to upgrade the Satellite A100-683. Currently the Intel Core Duo T2250 has been installed.
    I would like to upgrade my CPU and memory.;
    (1) What is the maximum CPU that is supported by the mainboard?
    (2) What kind of CPU kan I use. Thinking about a Intel Core Due T7200 or T7600?
    (3) What kind of memory can I use to upgrade to 4Gb?
Looking forward to any reply thagt is usefull!

    Hi,
I think since your machine is not anymore in warranty, you wont get any problems or a revocation of some kind of warranty when opening your machine and doing some techie-like work on it. :)
    1. It should be the Core2Duo T7600
    2. Use the T7600
    3. 2GB+2GB? ;) T
Seriously: Try to use DDR2 with a FSB frequency of 667Mhz.
    Thats all, still some questions?

  • Can graphic card on Satellite A100-386 be replaced/upgraded?

    Hi all,
Having probably heat problem with my satellite a100, I ran to the point were the screen remains dark and ... no boot at all !
All was cleaned inside for the dust, thermal pate applied on the three places needed.
Some months ago, I put 2 RAM at 2Go to boost it a bit : it was fine till some days with instant shuts down after about an hour to the great end : no more boot with no bip, nothing on except the fan and the led power.
Opening it, I saw the thing near the fan that could be the video card which seems to be removable, pretty rare isn't it ?
If it's really remplaceable, do I have to find the exact same, nvidia geforce Go 7300 Tc, said on specs, or is there the possibility to put there a better card ?
As far as I know, one does not reserve an emplacement for a removeable part if there is no way with the others parts of the computer to change it (compatibility), unless it's for cost reasons...
    Thanks for help

    Thanks guys,
What about the probability to have an answer from the "official" repair service of toshiba as there's no more guarantee and the product discontinued ?
I found a card on ebay and on an another site, the possibility stands there, if needed !
I also was surprised with the no bip, and what do you mean by "it sounds as BIOS problem" ? motherboard dead ?
How to access to BIOS without screen ?
Can I try to power on with the gpu removed to test if bips come without crashing the motherboard ?
I apologize for my english french-thinked before written, due to the lack of practice !!
Is there a way to ensure which one, from the motherboard or the gpu is dead ?
HDD was tested several times on other computers and is ok, same for the RAM.
Could removing the CMOS-battery for some times can be helpful, in the case of gpu not faulty ?
