Satellite A100 - black display at start-up

Since two days my Toshiba A100-495 laptop / model-no. PSAA9E-18F047GR / serial-no. Y6065357Q with Windows XP SP3 shows a black display at start-up. There is even no Windows start picture.
The laptop does all the booting, but after finishing and being ready for use, the display is still black. When I am pressing Fn + F5 keys, the desktop appears.
The black screen is only at cold start-up after shut-down, not at awakening from stand-by or pause.

I have connected an external monitor (power ON) to the shut-down notebook, then started the notebook.
There was nothing to see neither on notebook monitor nor on external monitor black screen as before. After the booting was done, the desktop appears after pressing Fn+F5 for about three seconds.
I have not jet tried to change BIOS settings because there is no Toshiba splash screen on start-up. I am afraid I can not see what is going on or what I have to choose after accessing BIOS without display signs.

  • Satellite A100-250: Display resolution 640x480 under W2k

    Today, I purchased a Toshiba Satellite A100-250.
Since I have quite some software I want to run on it that works far better under Windows 2000, I installed Win2k on the laptop.
And since a fresh Windows Install gave me a 640x480 resolution, I went to the ATI-site to download the Radeon Drivers.
But, when I downloaded those (6-2_xp-2k_dd_ccc_wdm_enu_30152.zip) and tried to install it, I got two errors.
The first one is: "Severe. INF error. Video driver not found."
The second one is: "Severe. Setup was unable to complete the installation. Try to setup your display adapter with a standard VGA driver before running setup."
So I checked the Device Manager. Under "Other devices", there's a listing of "Video Controller (VGA Compatible)".
No matter what I try (Windows Update, Windows CD, standard inf files), I can't get a video driver running.
Can someone please tell me what's going on here?
And can anyone give me a solution?

    Hi
As far as I know it's not advisable to use not Toshiba graphic drivers.
The other drivers are designed for the usage on the desktop PCs and not for the notebooks.
The graphic cards on the notebooks are not similar with the desktop PC graphic cards.
The problem is that I don't found a Toshiba graphic driver for the W2k for this unit.
But I have got a idea.
You can use the Windows XP on you unit. The best way is to use the Toshiba recovery CD. The Windows XP supports a compatibility mode.
If you right click on an exe file and choose the properties so you will see the compatibility tab.
There you can enable the option and choose the W2k.

  • Satellite A100: Black screen until windows starts

    Hello everybody,
my screen shows nothing until windows XP starts. No toshiba start-screen, no boot menue. The rest runs problemfree, no errors. I would like to have the normal boot with: "press del to enter setup" etc.
    Thanks for helping

    Hi
Something like press del to enter setup will not appear because usually at the beginning only the Toshiba splash screen should appear.
If you want to enter the BIOS you have to press the F2. By pressing the DEL you will not enter the BIOS. Its a notebook and not a desktop PC, buddy ;)
What you can do is to disable the Quiet Boot in the BIOS. Then diagnostic enabled and summary screen is displayed.

  • Satellite L750 black screen on start up!

After using my new Laptop for three weeks (and only for 3 hours per day) suddenly one morning I pressed the start button and the only thing I got was a black screen with nothing else .No cursor , no sound , nothing at all , only black screen. Please I need help

I have the same problem with this Satellite L645-S4102.  No Toshiba splash logo on startup.  Just a black screen.  There were BSOD problems before I got this laptop but I can't even get the laptop to bootup to even try and repair it.  The laptop is out of warranty.  On startup, it checks for usb bootable or DVD bootable disc (lights come on, but that's it).  any help would be greatly appreciated.  I tried taking out the batteries and leaving it for over an hour, held the power button to drain any static electricity, then put the lithium battery and laptop battery in  and still get the same results.

  • Satellite L300D - Black Screen on start-up

Hi Guys, I need some help please. On Thursday I was on my computer and noticed the time was wrong I thought I must of done something wrong and was going to fix it. I went to restart my computer but it wouldnt boot just had a black screen. I knew I hadnt damaged the screen. After a bit of googling I read about taking the battery out and plugging the charger in and low and behold it worked!
On Friday I charged my battery up for an hour and put it in the computer and that worked too so I thought the problem was solved.
Unfortunately today my computer will not start at all with or without the battery in still get the black screen. The fan is going but apart from that its very quiet. I tried putting the cd in to see if that would do anything but it didnt.
    Any suggestions please?

When I first got theToshiba Satellite, it came with Vista. It was UNUSABLE! I mean that I would have to restart it by removing the battery and disconnecting all power every couple of hours.
Toshiba wouldn't help me and microsoft would not help me.
They both blamed each other. So after paying over $700.00 I was disappointed.
After a year of struggling, I found the drivers for windows XP and installed Windows XP. The laptop was suddenly fast and it worked.
I don't like how hot it gets and the noisy fan on most of the time. A friend has a LENOVO laptop that works very good, and is very quiet.
I doubt that I would ever buy another TOSHIBA again, mostly because they did not support me when the laptop was unusable right out of the box.
Also 3 years is too short a period of time for the 4700.00 Laptop to go in the landfill!
    Pathetic.

  • Satellite L640 - Black screen at start-up

When I go to start up the notebook I only get a black screen. I can hear the fan going and the start up sound happens to login but only a black screen appears.
Any suggestions to fix this would be great!

Thing is I don't really know what's caused it. I download a lot of torrents using utorrent and don't really use it for much else. It was running a little slow but basically one day just went to black screen and that's it. Is there a way to restart the settings?

  • Satellite laptop black screen on start up!

Last night my laptop froze up and after several minutes of waiting it out nothing was happening. I did a hard shut down and left it overnight. This morning upon turning it on all I get is the Toshiba start up logo and then it goes to a black screen with a blinking white cursor in the upper left hand corner. My only 2 options in the logo screen are F2 and F12. What happened and how can I get it back to normal? I'm starting to panic!

Please include your full model number when posting problems on the forums. It can be found on the bottom of your laptop.
Turn off your laptop, unplug all wires, remove the battery, and hold the power button for thirty seconds. Afterwards, reattach the battery and connections.
If that doesn't fix it, try contacting technical support by calling (800) 457-7777.

  • Satellite P300- Black Screen at start-up

    Hey,
My notebook freezed the other day then shutdown. Ever since it has been unable to rebot. The power and battery light are on and when I go to turn it on it comes on and will ether stay on for 5 seconds and go off or stay on but still with a black screen.
Any of you guys plz help.

    Hi
In your case I would check the memory modules firstly.
The point is that a faulty module would affect the notebook startup process you would not be able to access the BIOS if the modules are faulty.
You said the notebook shut down this would mean that the temperature has increase to a higher level and therefore the notebook powered off in order to prevent the hardware from damage
In your case everything can be possible as I said; RAM should be checked at first, if RAMs are ok, then other parts like CPU and motherboard should be checked
I think you have not many experience and not enough resources in order to run some tests and therefore I recommend contacting a technician. The professional guy could test the parts and if necessary could replace it

  • Satellite A100 display blank but external vga works

    Hello,
my two year old Satellite A100-847 display stopped working. I used external VGA monitor for a few days,
then switched back to laptop LCD and found out it doesnt work. It doesn't show anything , only the grey backlight.
The LCD doesn't work even at boot nor does in WIN XP, nor at battery power or AC. I have tried to dismantle the display according to some guide
to check if the signal cable is firmly at its place in the connection to LCD, but it hasn't solved the problem.
I use the original BIOS and somewhat updated nvidia display driver, they worked fine up to now, so I suggest its not a bios/driver problem.
(but maybe it is, so I tried to install original display driver with no effect. I dont want to try to flash new bios, and end up with f....ed up display and bios too)
The video output to external monitor is completely fine, from boot or in win.
Does anybody see a solution, please? Or should I only go to service provider...
    thank you
    Pepe

    Hello
In my opinion you should definitely go to the nearest Authorized service provider. They can say for sure what the problem is and, of course, order by Toshiba the right part for exchange.
It is definitely hardware issue and it can be the FL inverter, especially if you see the something on the screen but almost black and grey.

  • Black screen instead of Desktop Windows XP on Satellite A100-455

I have now a permanent problem with my Satellite A100-455 laptop since it didn't shutdown properly (in fact it stopped when the battery was out...).
Now systematically when I try to start the laptop, after the Toshiba and Windows XP family logo the screen remains black (only the mouse arrow works), the Windows desktop never displays!
Even with a F8 mode, I tried some options without success...
    What can I do ?
Do you think the only solution is the recovery of the system with the original recovery CD delivered with the Laptop?
Thanks in advance for your help.

    hi deirdra
looks like you have to install your system again. using the recovery-cd is a good idea.
but be aware you could *loose data*! depending on the recovery mode.
when you are not able to start your operating system by pressing f8 you are in trouble.
maybe you can test it with a system-on-cd to check if it is a hardware problem.
in my oppinion there is a problem that depends on software...
try to choose "known last good" configuration
and / or "f5" instead of "f8"on booting into your os.
try to boot without battery only with ac-power on.
let me know if any of the suggestions worked for you.

  • Satellite A100-599 - question about display driver update

    Hi,
I have a Satellite A100-599 with a NVIDIA 7600go graphic card and I have Bioshock like most of you the game crashes because of some problems with the graphic card drivers, no pb...in the meantime NVIDIA released some new patches to the Forceware and after I rechecked the Toshiba driver support database I saw a new release in the Display driver list for WinXp.
One of them seems to be from 13/09/2007. I downloaded the drivers, installed them and after I checked the driver details in the Device manager list and to my surprise the details said the drivers are from 2006. I reinstalled the drivers and the same thing appeared. I checked the XML that was in the drivers archive and surprise ...the drivers are really the old ones from 2006. So my question is this: Do you have any Display Drivers for my model that work for Bioshock :D
    Regards,Marian

I dont know if WE have. I think it would be took some long time to ask every single user: hey, do you have some drivers for blackmodjo? Ah, come on, please. Just a little bit of them... ;)
No, I have a better idea. Its like cooking a meal. The ingredients: DriverCleaner Pro and the website www.laptopvideo2go.com and .... ta ta ta TAAAA a lot of patience
To get some good "bio"shocked meal just follow this receipt:
    Go to
    http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/
read before you do anything (YES, even before you continue BREATHING) the FAQ-section on that site (RECOMMENDEDRECOMMENDEDRECOMMENDED)
and then download the drivers. Do it, yes...
Then download drivercleaner by searching for it on www.google.com and THEN, read their Manual before doing anything else (Ok, you can continue breathing..)
After reading their manual you will something like:
    1. Starting program, doing something, restarting machine
    2. starting in safe mode, starting that program, removing..yadayadayada
    3. Installing new driver
    3. Playing Bioshock
    4...
5..no..6. Thanking me and giving me your first born.. ;)
So, by cutting away around 40% of my humoristic stuff and following the constructive technical instructions from me you will be able to play bioshock.
    Greets :)

  • Satellite A100 has a black screen and won't load into the Bios

I bought a Satellite A100 - (model psaa8c-0fh00e) about 5 months ago. it was left on over night which is not uncommon and when i came back to use it about 15 hours later it was just a black screen. moved the touch screen and its keys and nothing happened. so i cold boot it and it turned off. i then turned it back on like normal and the notebook turns on but the screen is completely black. it's not even loading the normal Toshiba Bios screen.
Now my question: is if there is any way I can fix this, i am familar with computer and parts. I just don't get this one cause i've never had to reflash the bois or anything like that. I'm just not sure how to turn and i really don't wanna have to take it into a shop, any suggestions would be helpful.
    thanks in advance.

    Hi Conrad,
If your A100 powers on normally (HDD spinning, optical drive LED flickers, fans turn etc.) then I would suspect that your LCD or FL Inverter has failed. You can check this by connecting an external monitor to the notebook to see if that shows the normal display.
On the other hand if there is no activity at all from tour notebook when you power it on then I would imagine you have an internal hardware fault, possibly the main board, which will need to be checked by a Toshiba Authorised Service Partner since the unit will still be covered by the warranty if it is only 5 months old.
    regards,

  • No display after linux install on Satellite A100

    Hi All,
On the weekend I decided to install linux on an extended partition on my toshiba satellite a100. I did a fresh install of windows from the recovery cd and everything worked fine. I then installed linux on an extended partition and my computer displays nothing when starting up - (the LCD has a back-light) and I get all the beeps and it reads from CD's etc. The strange thing is that I can plug it into an external monitor and it works fine. When I start it up with an external monitor I can then switch to the LCD and I get a display but it is very slow and has many imperfections.
I have updated the bios, installed the latest graphics drivers (ati) but still have no improvement. Since the linux install I have removed the extended partition and installed windows from the recovery cd again (still not improvement).
Does anybody have any suggestions as to what I can try next?
Thank you in advanced for your help.

You ask what you can do??
Delete and format the whole HDD and reinstall the OS from the recovery CD.
If you want to use the Linux, I would recommend using a Knoppix. You can get it on the Live CD and its not necessary to install it on the HDD.
