Satellite A100 (PSAA9): Win7 + screen brightness adjustment issue
Hi
I have installed Windows 7 64-bit on my toshiba A100 (psaa9) machine, and i cannot modify screen brightness anymore.
It is maximum brightness always. Fn key does not work, and neigther i can modify the brightness manually through nvidia control panel. nvidia driver is 7.15.11.7967, installed automatically with windows.
In a similar thread http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=182780
i've read suggestions about Value Added Package to be installed, but there is no package like this for my model.
how can i fix my problem?
thanks
hi all,
thank you for reply!!!
ok, i tried to install VAP and Flash Card Utility for Satellite L500. first, installing Flash Card Utility i got invalid serial number error. i've read in forum that it might be due to inappropriate driver for my version on laptop or if i did not install VAP first. so, second, i tried to installed VAP, but i get value "Setup tvap error 0x8146045B" :(
according my display driver: it was nVidia driver automatically installed with win7. in fact there is no display driver for win7 64bit version on toshiba website... i guess i have more problems with display, as my secondary display blinks every time some system event like driver/program installation or usb device plugging-in or -out happens.

Wrong nvidia drivers for Satellite A100 (PSAA9)
I downloaded nvidia drivers 97.45 but this driver recognizes my GeForce Go 7600 card as NVIDIA Quadro NVS 110M. Is there something wrong with the drivers?
At nvco.inf I found that there is only support for the latter card. What is happening?I wrote here last week but nobody answer me. I have Satellite A100-PSAA9 and driver doesnt work on Windows Vista. It says "This driver compatible with Wista Vista" so I'm using Windows Vista Ultimate also Turkish language. I was thinking maybe problem is Turkish version but I see it is not.
I called Toshiba Turkey customer support but they said "We didnt test yet Vista driver, please bring your laptop here. Maybe we will report this Toshiba Europe and they will release new driver soon". I dont want to bring it anywhere, I want some solution.
NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600 doesnt work with Windows Vista Ultimate. Nvidia.com on web sites not release yet any GeForce Go Vista Driver. What does it mean?

Hi guys! I hope you can help me with this.
My laptop is a Lenovo U400 bought last April. I upgraded it yesterday to Windows 8 Pro.
The Upgrade Assistant detected incompatibilities on the following softwares (I'll be mentioning only those I had problems with after the update.)
-AMD Catalyst Install Manager
-Catalyst Control Center
-Lenovo Energy Management
-Cypress Trackpad
After the update, the following problems occurred
-Windows kept prompting me about the incompatibility of Catalyst Control Center and Lenovo Energy Management
-When I check the Device Manager -->Display Adapters, My AMD Radeon HD 6470M was changed to HD 7400M and has an exclamation point on it indicating a problem. When check Properties it says, "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)"
-I can't manage switchable graphics because the AMD Radeon driver has been stopped by the OS and Catalyst Control Center doesn't work. It says, "Catalyst Control Center cannot be started. There are currently no settings that can be configured using Catalyst Control Center."
-My touchpad works but does not support multitouch functions.
-Screen brightness adjustment stopped working both on hotkeys and Power Options.
I tried the following actions to fix the problems:
-Downloaded the new softwares from Lenovo Support but the Catalyst Control Center and Cypress Trackpad still doesn't work. I also tried installing driver software from the AMD site but it still didn't work. [FAILED]
-I tried to use the Cypress Trackpad software for U300s/e and it fixed the problem with the touchpad [FIXED]
-Installed the Energy Management software for Windows 8 but when I click the 'Optimized Battery Health' button, it keeps reverting back to 'Maximum Battery Life'. [PARTIALLY FIXED]
-Resorted to 3rd party software to fix the Switchable Graphics (Catalyst 12.11 Beta from leshcatlabs.net) and it fixed the switchable graphics problem as well as the Catalyst Control Center problem. This is temporary until a working solution or update is available. [TEMPORARILY FIXED]
-All actions trying to fix the Screen brightness adjustment didn't work. [FAILED]
Please do help me on this. Thanks in advance!!!Yes I own U400 too and I'm using it now. To many forums been read, can't remember which one. Basically, u have to clean AMD and Intel drivers that come along with Win 8. Why? Because the Win8 driver database will lead the device ID "DEV_6760" (if you looking at display adapter device properties) to HD 7400 series instead of HD 6470M, again why? At the bigining only the HD 7400 series already "certified" by Microsoft, while the 6470M out of somewhere. Current CCC (or else) + 6470 drivers, contain also driver for 7400 series in same packages (at least until now, hopefully near future they will release an update). So you can gues where the windows will lead to? Yes 7400 series (certified one). This will explain also why the Energy Management didn't work to= "missing identifier" or we can say "hardware not match".
You have to find a "fix" driver which contain only HD 6470M and install it manually trhu "Have Disk" option, after you claan all AMD and Intel driver. If you success, then install the CCC from Lenovo Support and from ATI ( I use 12.11 Beta8 Net4 CCC - this is a must), but remember to unchek the AMD Display driver when you install both CCC, and leave the rest checked including Intel Component. Then you can download install anything you want =).
Leschat's driver did't work on my and "harm" the system. Believe it or not, I found the AMD 6470M standalone driver on HP website. They call it "SoftPack", which actually contain CCC software.
It's quite tricky thing, that's why not everyone willing to try. But I think it's worth to try, as the risk is not too deep, just backup anything befor you do it. Cheer -
How to create a complete new image for Satellite A100 PSAA9E ?
My Satellite A100 PSAA9E is so incredible slow that I think the only option is to uninstall everything. Mean how can I restore my laptop to its original condition inlc. latest driver units.
best regards,
stefHi,
Before making a new installation you can clean your system using software like TuneUp utilities. it's shareware but you can use it free for a month. It cleans the registry, removes duplicated files, and...
If you want to restore to it's original condition, use recovery disks or Hdd recovery image (Pressing F8 on startup). If you didn't burn and hdd recovery image gone, you can order from Toshiba for money or get windows copy for installation (all the drivers you can find on Toshiba driver page)

Cannot record audio from wave on Satellite A100-PSAA9
Why I can not record realtime Audio Conference with the included RealTec Driver on my Toschiba A100?
Record Options given just, "Microphone-Line In-CD" but Wave is Missing, why?
I have another Notebook from Asus with RealTec Driver and there is it possible, on my Toshiba not, why?Dear all,
I've read so many posts where people want to record music they hear on their Satellite Notebooks (either wave, or sounds from the internet) and it seems that cornelius solved the "realtec driver" problem - that doesn't meen that it's really a problem of realtec - (where there are only three mixer categories) quite well. But I tried a little - because I don't want to spend 30$ for a new driver and found a cheaper solution (finally I hope, it works at least on my Satellite A100-PSAA9).
What you need is:
first, a program that may record your sounds to mp3 or wave or whatever, I use No23Recorder - but there are lots of other programs working very well. Second you need to buy (mine cost 1) a jack plug (in german: Klinkenstecker) with one male and two female slots. Third, a stereo cable with one jack plug at each end of it (2)
Than you can start recording by putting the jack plug into the headphone slot of your Notebook; than putting the stereo cable into one of the female slots of the jack plug and the other one into the microphone slot of your Notebook. To listen to the things you want to record, put a headset into the free slot of the jack plug - and start recording ;-) !
So if you have enough money and you don't like a bit of cable salad, than I suggest you choose cornelius's way. If you are a poor student like me, perhaps you should try mine?

Need WXP drivers for Satellite A100 (PSAA9)
Hiya,
I've had to re-install Windows XP on my laptop. I don't have the Toshiba drivers CD though.
So I came here to get the drivers but I've no idea which driver goes with which hardware in my Device Manager.
Here's what I need the drivers for under Device Manager...
Ethernet Controller
Mass Storage Controller
Network Controller
PCI Device
PCI Device (again)
SM Bus Controller
Can anyone advise which specific driver I need for each?
Many thanks,
JamesThanks for you replies. I'd already come across that file, but it didn't give many clues. Here's the contents of it...

T400 screen brightness standby issue
When my T400 comes out of standby the screen brightness goes to 100% even though the Power Scheme prior to standby was lower than 100%. This causes me to have to manually adjust the screen brightness. Does anyone know how to prevent this from happening? I have the ATI video adapter and I am making power setting changes via the Power Manager.
Is everyone running XP with this issue? I had the same problem when I got my brand new T400 and after 5 calls to tech support for this and quite a few other nuisance problems they gave me an RMA to send the thing back after I reloaded with an XP set they had sent me thinking I had received a bad copy of XP. Day before I was going to send it back I went to reload it again to get my info I had loaded off. Well for whatever reason I chose to load it with the Vista recovery discs instead and it took care of all of the nuisance problems!! I have no idea why but its not an issue now, all I can figure is whatever software is not checking the brightness when it comes back from standby doesn't properly run with XP as with my few other nuisance issues. I'm loading 7 this weekend, will update to let everyone know how it works.
(Other issues included the LAN/Bluetooh icons in the task bar next to the clock-even after telling them to "go away" in the properties they failed to do so. Sometimes the screen wouldn't even come back on after coming out of standby so I'd have to blindly shut it down and reboot. Wireless connection was sporatic and fingerprint softwarewas finicky in not letting me load fingerprints(that one was a driver update issue though)-Like I said, Vista took care of all of it, not that I'm endorsing Vista because I do bellieve Vista was a total failed attempt at an OS by Microsoft and was released WELL before it was ready and properly tested. My guess is the software/drivers for all the hardware with issues were developed under vista so it'll work with XP but doesn't like to and will be finicky....) -
Satellite A100 and Blue screen
I have a Toshiba Satellite A100 thats approx 4 years old.
When I start up the computer I get a blue screen with an error message before I can see my computers background. But I can successfully start it up in safe mode.
The error message reads:
A problem as been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If it appears again follow these steps.:
Run a system diagnostic utility supplied by your hard ware manufacturer. In particular, run a memory check, and check for faulty or mismatched memory. Try changing video adapters.
Disable or remove any newly instaled hardware and drivers. Disable or remove any newly installed software. if you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components. restart your computer , press F8 to select advanced startup options and select safe mode.
Te3chnical information:
*** STOP: 0x0000007F (0x00000008,0xF794ED70,0x00000000,0x00000000)
If someone could walk me through some stepsto try it would be greatly appreciatedHi buddy,
If you can start your notebook in safe mode it seems to be a driver issue. So you should restore the system to an earlier point and hope it works.
In worst case you have to reinstall the whole notebook. Therefore start the HDD recovery and your OS will be reinstalled. -
Screen brightness adjustment broken
Since the latest updates to the kernel/udev/kmod, I can no longer control my screen brightness via KDE. This used to work perfectly. Neither the Fn-F6/F7 key combination, nor the "Screen Brightness" slider on the KDE power management tool changes the brightness.
Is this a known issue? If so, is there a workaround...?
I use a Toshiba A500 laptop. Like I mentioned, this worked last week, before I ran pacman -Syu :-(
The real problem is that it seems stuck at the highest brightness - this is draining my battery within 20 minutes.
Is there another way to adjust the screen brightness?

For NVIDIA I had to add the following to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/15-nvidia.conf
Option "RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=1"
So now it reads:

Special RAM brand for Satellite A100 (PSAA9)?
Hi,
I have a Satellite A100-504 (PSAA9) with only 1 GB RAM. CPUZ says it's a Hyundai HYMP512S64BP8-C4 PC2-4300 module.
I want to upgrade to 2 GB and was wondering whether I have to buy some special sort of RAM? Do I have to buy also Hyundai RAM or can that be a different brand? What about the specifications? Which RAM modules would be the best in combination with Vista and that Hyundai HYMP512S64BP8-C4 1 GB module?
Thank you for your help!
BobOne more thing: you can of course buy the memory modules from different manufacturers but be sure you use high quality product. I can recommend you also Kingston memory modules.

[Solved] Screen brightness control issue
I just purchased a Lenovo T410s. I have set it up to only use Nvidia and only give visibility to the Nvidia GPU. The problem I have is once X starts I can no longer change the screen brightness with the function keys. I'm using KDE and it registers that I'm trying to change the brightness but the screen never changes. If switch to run level 3 I can use the function keys to change the brightness without an issue. I'm confused at what is causing the issue. I'm not sure what information you need to help me, but I will give you what you need if you tell me.
EDIT: I discovered on the Nvidia forums that the backlight function was disabled in the drivers for this model. Apparently when in use it causes squealing sounds.
Last edited by migizi (2010-12-09 13:15:40)I did some more testing and here is what I found out. I switched my laptop to use integrated GPU only, so that means Arch sees my GPU as the Intel HD. Now I can boot X and control my brightness with the functions keys. Has anyone else run into the problem with Nvidia drivers and the Quatro NVS 3100m GPU?

Satellite A100-785 PSAANE - CD/DVD drive issue
Hello Friends,
I own a Toshiba Satellite A100-785 PSAANE and its configurations are as follows:
1.87 Ghz C2D, 1 Gb Ram (512 + 512), Windows Vista Basic, CD/DVD read/write...
Issue: Its been quite long, i m facing a certain problem with my Optical Drive. When ever I insert an CD which is originally produced by any company it works fine. The moment I insert any CD which is personally burned with some data from any normal CD/ DVD writer or the CDs which were previously created by the same laptop mentioned above, its been read as a blank disc. The data of the disk is not shown.
For eg: Lets say if I insert any software cd like my webcam's cd or my printer's cd they can be read normally and work fine. But the moment I enter any cd which is been burned by me which contains my personal files, that is been read as a blank disc.
This issue does not exists with any of the DVDs. Doesn't matter which every dvd I insert either being a normal software dvd or being the one which is burned as a personal data dvd, everything works fine and all the data in dvd can be read.
I have tried reinstalling the driver, I have tried reformatting my laptop using the Toshiba Recovery CD provided with the laptop, but the issue still exists.
In between few months ago, I tried doing some tweak, like first i insert the cd in the drive and then disable the cd drive and then enabling it again would actually read the cd. But after few tries, this also stopped working.
Now I really have no idea what should I do to make my CDs work normally.
I hope this post can help me out.
Your help will be appreciated
Thanks for your precious time
Regards

For me it sounds like a DVD, where the data has been burned, were not fully compatible.
I meet such issue on different computers. A friend of mine has had the similar problem with an non Toshiba notebook. Its matter of the disks which are used for burning.
I tested several brands and now Im using TDK and Verbatim because my CD/DVD drive supports these kind of disk properly.
Of course it could be an hardware issue too but in such case you will need to replace the CD/DVD drive -

XD-bit (CPU feature) disabled/unavailable for Satellite A100-PSAA9
Last week I bought the notebook Toshiba Satellite A100-847 (Satellite A100-SPAA9) that has an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, model T7200.
According to Intel specifications this processor (like all Core and Core 2 processors) has the XD-bit feature, known in Windows as DEP. I had the unpleasant surprise to find out that this feature is
reported by Windows as unavailable (in hardware). I understood from the electronic manual on the recovery CD (which is an older edition than the printed manual that comes in the package) that I can make this feature
available (for some older Satellite models) but I couldn't find any option in my BIOS to do this (my BIOS is made by Phoenix, version 2.0).
I really want to know how can I make this feature available/active as my processor supports it and so does the operating system bought together with the laptop and more than that, this feature is something beneficial - especially designed for security reasons and supported by all modern processors and operating systems.
Do I have to wait for an updated BIOS to include this option (to activate the XD bit feature) or to have it automaticaly set as active/available (instead of disabled/unavailable)?
I am expecting a well documented response from somebody who knows what I am talking about.
Thank you very much.First of all, Ive started this topic hoping that I can obtain a technical and to the point response, regarding exactly what I have asked. I do not wish for this thread to become a technical glossary, because any user that has the slightest notion of using Google or Wikipedia can easily find out what XD-bit, DEP and PAE mean (and those who dont already know what these mean cannot help me).
I am compelled to repeat myself: my problem addresses the technical personnel, who really understand and know what I am talking about; it is not addressed to the average Joe who likes to hear himself talking, but not to the point.
Secondly, anyone can find out that the Intel T7200 processor has the XD-bit feature just by searching on the
Intel site: he will only have to type the words T7200 specifications into the search box; but anyway, here is the link youve asked me for:
http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sspec=sl9sf
Thirdly, my system has to support the XD-bit feature because:
a) the operating system acquired together with the notebook is Windows XP SP2 Home Edition (so it is SP2 and yes it is in the PAE mode!)
b) the mainboard and the Intel 945PM chipset support this feature it is the standard Intel NAPA platform (and, just for the record, the only difference between this notebook and another notebook I own is just the processor, which is Core Duo simple -Yonah-, not Core 2 Duo -Merom- as this Toshiba notebook has; and the other notebook has the XD-bit feature enabled and Windows uses it)
Ive also tried to install Windows XP SP2 Professional and I used diagnostic and information programs (e.g. Sisoftware Sandra) but with the same result: I am reported that the processor does not have the XD-bit feature or this feature is deactivated.
Taking into account that Intel has blessed this processor model with the XD-bit feature and Toshiba has used at its turn the omnipotent Intel 945PM chipset which has nothing against the XD-bit feature mentioned above it results that this feature has been deactivated most likely by BIOS.
Ive started the topic [hoping that this forum is visited by Toshiba technicians in order to find out the problems their clients/users encounter and to act accordingly by offering them their support.
PS: I am not mad, not at all; I do appreciate the interest shown in my problem, but I do not wish to accept/encourage useless and pointless discussions.
If you wish, we can have other discussions on hardware topics but not on this thread in which I only hope to obtain the solution to my problem (solution that can come by a possible update of the actual version of the BIOS present on the site).
