Satellite A100: Windows won't boot - Unmountable Boot Volume

My son has a Satellite A100 running Windows XP SP3. Windows doesn't get past the Windows logo screen and terminates with an +Unmoutable Boot Volume+ message.
After this has happened, the HDD password status in BIOS is +HDD password froze+. Note that the HDD does not have a user password set.
What is happening here and how is it fixed?

Well, I persevered with Recovery Console and fixed the problem with the Fixboot and Fixmbr commands. It appears that viruses had corrupted the boot sector or master boot record, making the remainder of the Windows partition unusable. Once these were repaired, all the directories and files were still intact and usable.
Interestingly, there is a hit for a similar problem on the Microsoft Windows XP help, but their solution is more complicated.

  • Satellite S2450-201: Blue Screen Error - UNMOUNTABLE BOOT VOLUME

    Hello,
This morning a turned on my laptop and went downstairs for breakfast when i returned to the laptop there was a blue screen in which it said the following...
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
    UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows uodates you might need.
If problems continue, disable or remove any new installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, Press f8 to select advanced startup options, and then select safe mode.
    Technical information:
    *** STOP: 0X000000ED (0X817D3130, 0XC0000032, 0X00000000, 0X00000000)
Now i have tryed restarting over and over, I have tryed Safe Mode, Safe Mode with networking, Safe Mode with command prompt, Last known good config, Start windows normally. All of which lead to the same blue screen with the same white lettered message.
I need to gain access to the computer quite soon as it contains important data. If anyone can help without me losing any data i would be very much obliged.
    Thanks in Advance.

    Hi
I think the easiest way to solve this problem is to recover the notebook with the delivered Toshiba recovery CD.
The boot sector can be created again on the HDD.
But you know; all data will be deleted.
If you want to save the data, you can try to remove the notebook HDD. Install it in the external USB case and connect the HDD to the other computer. Then you will be able to access the HDD and to save the data.

  • Satellite A100 - Windows and BIOS doesn't start after BIOS update

Hello, I have updatet BIOS of my notebook sattelite A100.
After updating I cannot start my notebook and BIOS doesn't start.

Hey guys... I tried to update my girlfriend's BIOS on a A100 just now (the windows installer) and the procedure stoped in the middle because windows crashed while doing. Now the laptop won't start at all (obviously). I have a black screen when turning it on. No boot sounds or anything. I've already removed the AC power source and battery in case that works. I guess removing the BIOS battery won't help either since the flashing was wrong... In case that doesn't work, is there any chance i could find a BIOS from ebay or somewhere else?
    Thx in advance, Jimmy..
PS. My gf is going to shoot my brains out :P

  • Satellite A100: Media Buttons do not work

    Hello!
I have Satellite A100, Windows XP SP2. All multimedia buttons on the left of the keyboard stopped working. They worked yesterday, i did not install anything or even turned the computer off since then. They just stopped working.
Can anyone help me to fix it?
    Thank you!

Have you just installed the button controls over the old ones or did you delete them properly first and made a reboot?
Sounds like there's something still left in some parts of the Windows entries.
Maybe you could try to completely uninstall toshiba button control, then search for leftover registries with programs like regcleaner or similar. Make reboot and after that install button control again.
In many cases this method really helps.

  • Satellite L300-055 won't boot windows

    Hi,
I have a satellite L300-055 laptop that fails to boot up.
I shut it down one night and the next time I turned it on it wouldn't boot.  It goes to a black screen with the following error message.
    \Boot\BCD
    Status OxcOOOOOOf
An error occured while attempting to read the boot configuration data.
It asks me for a recovery disk, but stupidly I didn't make one.  Is there anything that can be done to recover the system?
    Any help would be appreciated!

If you can reach the recovery environment, Jen, there are lots of things to try.
Turn the computer on and immediately press and hold the F8 key.
On the Advanced Boot Options menu, choose Repair Your Computer.
When you reach the System Recovery Options menu (the recovery environment), choose Startup Repair.
If that doesn't do the trick, go back to the System Recovery Options menu and do a System Restore.
Let us know how it goes.

  • Satellite Pro L10 - Unmountable Boot Volume

My Satellite Pro L10 loops at the boot process. After the Windows XP splash screen, the following error messages comes up: .... Unmountable boot volume... Technical Information: Stop: 0x000000ED...
I know this is nothing exceptional and doing a full recovery would solve the problem. But I don't want to loose the data (which of course is not backed up). I tried a Windows XP disc, but it won't boot from the cd/dvd drive pressing F12 or <0> and changing the boot order....
    Can anyone help please?

    Hi
Hmm the error message unmountable boot volume appears mostly if the HDD cannot be recognized during the booting. Why? Well, possibly the HDD malfunctions or the master boot record is faulty!
If you dont want to recover the notebook you could try to boot from the XP CD (press C button immediately after notebook powering) and to start the repair console.
In the repair console you could use the command chkdsk /p and after this you could fix the master boot record using the command fixboot or/and fixmbr.
If it does not help, the new OS installation is you last resort.
Ps: if you want to backup the data you can try to remove the HDD and try to connect it via external USB HDD controller to another computer.

  • Satellite S55t-B5233 Shrink disk for dual boot windows 8 and other OS

    Hi,
    I have a Toshiba Satellite S55t-B5233 Pre-installed with Windows 8.1
I would like to maintain Windows 8 but to dual boot with Windows 7, Ubuntu and OpenSuse, so:
    - When I try to Shrink disk C (943371 MB) it says that 'Size of available shrink space in MB = 469651 MB'. The free space in my disk is 885240 MB!
So I would like to know if there is a way to left about 200000 MB for Windows 8? so I could use the rest of space for shrinking for other OS...
    - I would instal windows 7, ubuntu and OpenSuse in partitions D, E and F [Partitions that I pretend to create by shrinking C] ... a) does it will void my warrantee? b) does it will render my Windows 8 “Recovery Partition” useless?
    thanks in advance...
    Gari

    Satellite S55t-B5233
I don't recommend you attempt multiple-booting in this new UEFI/GPT world, Gari. Things are more difficult now than they were in the BIOS/MBR world. Best to set up virtual machines using Hyper-V or another free VM to run other OSes.
    In answer to your questions,..
    a. Toshiba doesn't care what you do with the software. They won't even look at the computer until the drive has been restored to its original out-of-the-box contents.
    b. After you mess around with the partition locations, I doubt the recovery partition would be accessible in the normal fashion if at all. Many create a recovery drive and delete the recovery partition first thing.

You said you are using an USB DVD Super Multi drive??
Sorry buddy but I think you will be not able to boot from external USB CD/DVD drive
As far as I know BIOS doesnt support this!
You have to use the use the internal CD/DVD drive if you want to boot from the disk!

  • HP DV7-7338ea Windows 8 Unmountable Boot Volume BSOD

The product concerned here is a HP DV7-7338ea with operating system Windows 8. I have been using it for just under 11 months and bought it with Windows 8 installed.
    Problem descrpition:
I recently installed a new sound update for my laptop. I was promted to restart and once that happened, I recieved a BSOD with the error message: unmountable boot volume. When that happens, it restarts and goes into "preparing automatic repair" mood after which the screen goes black and the windows cursor shows and then that's it. I am left with no options or anything. I have tried pressing F11 on start up and then it says "please wait" and goes back to the same black screen. I have left it on for over an hour but it just remains there until my computr switches itself off for overheating (this has never happened before). I haven't recently installed any thing new apart from the HP update. Please help as I do not know what to do now. I have not backed up my files yet and they are too important for me to loose.  Thanks
    Update:
I ran a system check and it said the Hard Drive Short DST failed. Does this mean I have lost my files? The laptop had been operating very well until this latest HP update which may have corrupted my hard drive.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

A harddisk short DST fail means that either your harddrive is failing or have failed alltogether.
If you're still under warranty, contact your retailer or local HP store and get a replacement harddrive that you can switch yourself or have it sent in for service.
If you have an IT knowledgeable friend you might be able to salvage some of the data on the computer.
You can try removing the harddrive frmo your computer and connecting it to his.
Please let me know how it works.

  • R61 R&R won't start after "unmountable boot volume" error

    Hello all,
New user, first post - after problem, of course.
I have an R61 Thinkpad with Windows XP on it.  (SP2 or SP3, not sure).  Has worked flawlessly for years, then the other day I got the dreaded "unmountable boot volume" error and it would not start.
No problem - I re-start, hit the ThinkVantage button, then hit F11 to use the R&R hidden on a separate partition of the hard drive........I get the black screen with the big progress bar, ok, then a blue screen......then nothing.  Hangs up and sits there.  I have repeated this about 5 times now.
No problem! - I was smart enough to make an R&R CD set a while ago!  Put the primary R&R disk in the CD drive, start the machine, ThinkPad button, F12 this time to choose boot from CD.....much CD activity ensues and I once again get the black screen with the big progress bar.  It takes much longer, and I get teh blue screen - BUT - then it goes one extra step to display the "ThinkVantage Rescue & Recovery 4" screen with the life preserver image.
Excellent, I thing - except it then hangs there.  Just sits there.  No disk activity.  No keys will do anything.
I can find no threads here or on any other forum with this particular issue.
Am I fubar?  Or is there something else I can do?
    Thanks a bunch.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Hi jim, welcome to the forums,
Is the hard drive recognised in BIOS, was there an entry in the boot list against HDD0?
Regardless of it being shown in BIOS / boot list or not, the first thing I would do is to reseat the hard drive and see if that helps, maybe over time it's lost contact to the mainboard socket. If you don't know how to do this you can find out at the R61 movies site.
The next thing I would do is run a hard drive diagnosis check from a bootable cd, these can be downloaded from all HDD manufacturer's websites e.g. Hitachi's Drive Fitness Test.  It may be that the drive has simply gone bad after all those years of work.
Let us know how you get on

The file system may be corrupted. To fix it, you need to run CHKDSK on C: Drive.
If you cant boot into Safe Mode to run CHKDSK, or if the Recovery Console wont load, you may need to connect the HDD to another PC using a USB Adapter, so you can run CHKDSK on it.
Also test the Hard Disk for errors by using DFT.
    DFT Download: http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm#DFT
Download the ISO File and burn it to a CD-R Disc (There is also a Floppy Disk version if that's easier).
If you dont know how to burn an ISO file, read this guide: http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm
Restart your laptop and boot from the DFT Disc.
Choose the "Advanced" Test and let it run (it may take an hour or so).
If you see a red message box, the HDD is faulty.
An error od 0x70 means there are bad sectors and the HDD needs replacing.

  • Windows 8 won't work in Boot Camp, help?

I have a late 2011 MackBook Pro 15" and I have tried multiple ways to get Windows 8 on it via Boot Camp.  I don't want to use a Virtual Machine because I need the dual booting ability.  When I try to burn the Windows 8 .ISO 32 or 64 Bit onto the DVD Disk Utility says "unable to burn Windows8 consumer preview (not recognized)".   The .ISO is from the Microsoft website so I don't understand why Disk Utility won't burn it.  I burn the .ISO through Finder and when I put it in my MacBook with Boot Camp up and running, Boot Camp just tells me to insert the Windows disk.  So Boot Camp won't read it.  Someone please help me, I've been at this for quite a while now and I haven't had any luck.

I decided to give Windows 8 another try this morning and have installed it successfully on my 2009 MacBook Pro. It is fully functional (with audio, keyboard controls) after performing the following steps:
    - Burned 64-bit Windows 8 Consumer Preview DVD at 4x
    - Opened Boot Camp Assistant and created a support disc (I installed this on an external dos drive)
    - Allocated around 35GB to Windows
    - Restarted and performed Windows installation
    - Important: Installed Windows updates (this makes the OS stable)
    - Installed Boot Camp drivers from support disc
For safety, I created some restore points along the way. Before installing the updates, the system hung quite a few times and there was no sound. After the updates and boot camp drivers, everything is now working fine. Good luck with your installation.

  • Satellite A205-S5804 won't boot.

My computer Satellite A205-S5804 won't boot.
It won't run on safe mode, and it won't run the system restore.
It remains black with a cursor, if anything at all.
How do I get my computer back on?

    Hi
Youve got a cursor which is flashing in the upper left corner?
In such case you should check of the HDD has been recognized by BIOS!
If the HDD is listed in BIOS then I would recommend checking the HDD using the drives fitness test:
    http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm
To run the drives fitness test you must download the appropriate creator or image and create a self-booting media.
    Check it!
