Satellite A110-103 - 2GB RAM - gaming performance tuning - SOLUTION

Hello,
For those of you who have 2Gb RAM installed on laptop and want to play games like FEAR2-PROJECT ORIGIN this is a performance tuning that I tested on my Toshiba Satellite A110-103!
If you want to add 2Gb of RAM or more to your laptop please read [this post and my experience with RAM upgrades|http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/message.jspa?messageID=153005#153005]! It might help you save money!
Before having installed 2Gb RAM I used to have a 4096 Paging File set in Windows for C drive.
After I installed the 2GB RAM I wanted to play FEAR2-Project Origin at low settings.
However the game played horrible with low framerates. So I wanted to know if there is a way to disable Virtual memory(paging file) and only use real RAM.
Most threads regarding disabling paging files stated that there is no way or point in doing that!
Well I decided to give it a try!
I disabled paging file from *Start->Control Panel->System ->Advanced->Performance->Settings->Advanced->Virtual memory->Change->No paging file*. I rebooted my laptop and after the reboot in my case I could see the big difference in speed!
TEST: I opened FEAR2-Project Origin started to play and my character's movements where much more responsive and without lags! :D
Conclusion: In my case disabling Virtual Memory(Paging file) really boosted my gaming experience! And I play on a ATI X200M card with 256Mb shared memory!
Test this and if you get good results please post them here! I
Best regards,
Marius Gigi

Hi Marius
Thanks for this message
Usually the paging file should help you to increase the RAM performance
Usin the page file, the data which should be stored in RAM would be moved to HDD and therefore a parts of RAM would be free
However, thanks for this feedback and your observations!

  • Toshiba Satellite A110-103 bootup problem

    Hi,
I have had this laptop for a while know but the thing just broke down on me a few weeks ago.
I never had a password set on the bios or computer bootup.
But now it asks for it, the thing is out of waranty so i tried some things myself.
Shorting out the battery to reset the bios did not seem to work, it did show me a error message though.
0251 system cmos checksum bad - default configuration used
    error
0280 previous boot incomplete default configuration used
No idea if its related to the problem, but that is as far as it goes.
Pressing F1 to continue or F2 to enter bios just asks for the password again.
So my main question, is it fixable if so what costs would i be looking at.
And ofcourse any other ideas how to fix it.

    Yes.
Take a look at this document
    Document ID: 98082632http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/bulletin.jsp?ct=SB&soid=2232649&ref=EV
On the bottom of the document it says Toshiba will cover the cost until December 2010.

  • Satellite A110-195 - Ram upgrade questions

    Hello
    I have Toshiba Satellite A110-195
    My questions are:
1)Whats the maximum size of ram per slot,1gb or 2gb?
I have 2 rams on my laptop right now 512 MB each.Am I able to replace one of them with a 2gb ram?
2)Right now on my laptop I have DDR2[PC2-4300] rams.
Any DDR2 SoDimm ram will work?
Or the ram must be DDR2 and exactly PC2-4300.

Notebook supports the Mobile Intel 945GM Express Chipset
    http://ark.intel.com/products/27857/Intel-82945GM-Graphics-and-Memory-Controller
According to Intel page, the chipset handles max 4GB RAM.
This means that you can use 2 x 2GB RAM or one 4GB RAM module.
    The chipset supports DDR2-400 / DDR2-533 / DDR2-667 RAM modules

  • Satellite A110-174 - RAM upgrade questions

    Hi,
    I have a Satellite A110-174
I want to buy some RAM module (it uses ddr2 ram, 533 MHz), but it seems impossible to found them.
I can only find 800 or higher frequencies.
Can I use them or they will give me problems / incompatibilities?
Can I mount 1 module or it's necessary to buy 2 modules?
Will the motherboard read up to 4Gb or it is necessary a Bios update?
    Thank you

Satellite A110-174 can be upgraded up to 4GB RAM.
In order to use a RAM dual channel feature, two modules have to be used.
This means 2GB RAM module in each slot.
The 4GB RAM limitation is caused by Mobile Intel 945GM Express chipset
http://ark.intel.com/de/products/27857 as well as the Intel Core CPU T1350 http://ark.intel.com/de/products/27243
The CPU supports the 533Mhz FSB (front side bus) and the RAM modules will work max at 533Mhz.
So you should use the DDR2-533 modules
But sometimes you should be able to use the DDR2-667Mhz modules. In such case the 667Mhz module speed will be clocked down to 533Mhz

  • Performance with 2GB RAM and SSD

I own a late 2010 MBA, 13" baseline model with 2GB RAM, w/SSD.  I am using Snow Leopard, and it runs perfectly.  I would like to upgrade to ML to sync with ipad, but a concerned with performance.  I use my MBA for word processing, emails, and internet surfing, including occasional movie downloads.  I cannot upgrade the RAM on this model.  I would therefore very much appreciate if someone who has run the latest versio of ML on this model can inform me of its performance w/2GB RAM and an SSD drive.  (I know it can run; I want to know how it runs).  Thanks very much!

Just went through the same situation with my 2006 iMac. Technically my memory tops out at 3gigs, but I can get 4 in there if I insist (though the machine won't take full advantage).
After a considerable amount of research, and hearing some horror stories of some folks who dove straight into Lion on older machines, I opted on upgrading memory to 3gig, backing up all my data, then running a clean install of Snow Leopard. I then reinstalled all my stuff, followed with a run of Monolingual (a shareware program that removes unnecessary languages and builds), then ran OnyX (another shareware) to run scripts and check/repair permissions.
Works fantastic. Machine is operating perfectly on 10.6.8 and with the memory upgrade and clean drive its running faster than ever. Definite new breath of life in the machine.
As per memory upgrade, I'd recommend going to Crucial. They're very Mac friendly, customer oriented, and reasonably priced. They have a small program you can download that scans your machine to determine the correct chip required, then brings you stright to an info and ordering page. I managed to get a 2gig chip with shipping for about $25. With the Snow Leopard upgrade total cost was under $60 for resuscitation.

    17" Powerbook G4 1.67GHz with 2GB ram
    System:
    10.5.4 Leopard

    1. Switching between running applications hangs up sometimes as long as 15 seconds
    2. Video playback in quicktime is choppy
    3. Various programs take a tremendous amount of time to open
    4. Opening relatively small illustrator and or photoshop files pinwheels for unusually long time

i have tried clean installs, as well as regular maintenance... and upgraded my RAM to the max of 2GB
Is there anything else i can do? Anyone else having similar problems and or know the best way to repair?

    Hi,
Just to chime in, I am running a PB G4 1.67, and I am running Leopard (10.5.4) on it just fine. In fact, I am *more than* pleased with the fantastic performance. I am a very very heavy user (enterprise software developer permanently running 101 things simultaneously on his machine) and I have no problems.
First of all, try to figure out what is chomping performance. Is it CPU? Fire up activity monitor, go to the CPU tab, list "all processes" and order by CPU usage. See if a process is swamping your CPU. Until I let it run overnight to index my 250Gb drive, the Spotlight indexing engine (mds) was eating all my CPU. Thereafter, it's fine. Or you can disable it.
So yeah - let's first figure out what is causing your CPU to over-work (and hence, your machine in general to heat up, they do get hot, especially in hot climates) and work from there. No reason to suspect hardware failure yet...

Have you run the Apple hardware test? One of the tests is to specifically test the fans.
*Overall, the entire computer feels VERY sluggish*
How much free disk space do you have? You need 10% to 15% free for systems usage. Less than that an performance can really slow down.
If you bring up the activity monitor, under system memory, what does it say for page ins and outs?

  • Performance difference between 1gb and 2gb RAM for Leopard

    Hi ..
I'm thinking of upgrading to a 2gb Ram.
Would like to know if other users saw a major increase in speed & performance in Leopard.
    Thanks.

No, I didn't see any appreciable speed increase in Leopard, but the increased RAM should help.

  • How is Lion's performance with the baseline 13" MBA (Late 2010) 2GB RAM?  I know it works fine with the baseline 11" 2GB model, but because that's a smaller machine, perhaps the 2GB limit is not so detrimental to performance.  MBA 13" 1.86, 2GB/2010

How does the baseline 13" mba (late 2010, 1.86 ghz, 2GB RAM/128GB) work with OSX LIon? I know the baseline 11" is fine, but does the larger form factor of the MBA 13" require more RAM to be speedy under Lion? I wouldn't think so, but please advise.  Please answer this question ONLY with refrence to the specs listed (13" MBA (late 2010, 1.86 ghz, 2GB RAM, 128gb).  Thanks much!

Overy time, every PC/Mac gets unavoidably bloated with junk like unnecessary files/downloads/apps or left-over files of video-streams/uninstalled apps/caches/... which slow down the overall system. That's why PC/Mac should be formatted (=deleting everything even including the operating system) once in a while to reinstall the operating system (here: Lion) from scratch -hence "clean install". To format a Mac is pretty easy, but all of your files (e.g. images, documents,...) should be saved on external harddrives/CDs/DVDs/Flash-drives... because they are going to be deleted during the formatting.
I'm NOT going to describe you how to format, because it might not be necessary for you.
But what you NEED to do anyway is (if you want Lion):
(( 0. Eventually, but not necessarily: Make a TimeMachine-BackUp to be able to return to Snow Leopard))
    1. Download Lion, BUT DON'T install it (cancel the install-process).
    2. Follow the instructions on this site:
    http://lifehacker.com/5823096/how-to-burn-your-own-lion-install-dvd-or-flash-dri ve
This will give you a legal copy of Lion on a DVD or Flash-Drive, which btw allows you to install it on all of your mac at home. Why do you need copy of Lion? If you encounter problems with lion after a "normal install"(=NOT formatting and NOT clean installing the operating system), you still have the option to make a clean install. A clean install can't be done without the copy of Lion on a DVD or Flash-Drive.

  • Slow gaming performance on Satellite Pro C660-2C7

So my games run slow on C660-2C7 my video card is ATI mobility radeon hd 5470.
Can I do something ? I tried the site canyourunit which says if u can or cannot and on Assassins creed revelations says that I can run it but once ingame it goes really slow
    null

Well, not quite sure what games you are trying to play but require to read some articles about the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470. for example this:
+Due to the higher clock rate (and GDDR5 support), the 3D gaming performance should be above the HD 4570 (predecessor with same TDP range). Therefore, all current games should be playable in low-medium details. Demanding games, like *Crysis, NFS Shift, or Modern Warfare ran on the HD 4570 for example only in low detail settings fluently.* Less demanding games like Left 4 Dead should run in high detail settings.+
    http://www.notebookcheck.net/ATI-Mobility-Radeon-HD-5470.23698.0.html
So it depends always on the game and the requirements to the hardware

  • Satellite L40-14N won't start up if i install two 2GB RAM modules

Computer won't start up if i install two two gb ram modules, can i install vista 64 on this computer to overcome this problem, have upgraded bios.or is there something else i can do.it also wont work if i put a 2 and a 1 gb ram in.
    Any help would be apprecated
    mansy

No, Vista 64Bit won't solve your problem. The fact is, that this notebook model only supports a maximum of 2GB Ram in total. So, you can only use one of your 2GB memory module.
If you do so, notebook will boot up again.

  • 10G OLAP Performance Tuning

HI if anyone had some tips for tuning 10g, so that my OLAP (AW in particular) performance is at its peak.
THe server specs are as follows:
    Server1.
    Windows 2000 Server
    2GB RAM
    Server2.
    Windows XP Pro SP1
    1GB RAM
I find that when I import old Express 6.3.4 databases into 10g, after import, the initial Update/commit, takes the same time as the import command. Is this because it has to write data from temporary space to permament.
I am basically looking for comparable parameters to that which would have been set in Express Instance Manager.
At this stage I have only looked to tweak :
    shared_pool_size
    sga_target
    db_cache_size
From my reading I understand it is best to leave olap_page_pool_size as 0.
Can any one assist. I am finding that performace using default parameters in 10g, is worse than that of Express 6.3.4.

Here are some guidelines for improving the OLAP performance in Oracle Database 10g Release 1.
    A. Turn off LOGGING (REDO) during builds to improve data insertion performance.
Disable Logging during build to improve overall load performance. Once load is complete turn it on.
If you choose to set NOLOGGING for the LOB segment (of the AW$ table containing your Analytic Workspace) check out MetaLink 1058851.6 for information pertaining to event 10359 which can reduce I/O for frequently updated NOLOGGING LOBs.
    http://metalink.oracle.com/metalink/plsql/ml2_documents.showDocument?p_database_id=NOT&p_id=1058851.6
    * Turn Logging off prior to commencing build.
    ALTER TABLE GLOBAL.AW$GLOBAL MODIFY LOB (awlob) (CACHE READS NOLOGGING);
    * Turn Logging on after build completes.
    ALTER TABLE GLOBAL.AW$GLOBAL MODIFY LOB (awlob) (CACHE READS LOGGING);
    B. Increase REDO Log size and log_buffer parameter to reduce log switch waits and improve overall time.
Ask the DBA to increase this to somewhere between 100M and 500M from the default of 10M. Use ADDM to determine the ideal size.
    C. Build Analytic Workspaces (LOBs) in separate preallocated Tablespaces to improve overall data load performance.
This can reduce device contention while preallocating space avoids allocation during inserts and updates.
    D. Move TEMP, UNDO and REDO Logs to fastest disks to improve overall build performance.
Ask the DBA to place TEMP, UNDO and REDO Logs on fastest disks. No RAID5. Use RAW whenever possible and consider RAID10 or 0+1. RAID 5 can severely affect performance on highly updated databases.
    E. Specify better OLAP DML for SQL IMPORT or SQL INSERT DIRECT to improve analytic workspace load performance.
SQL INSERT DIRECT is up to 53x faster than SQL INSERT.
NOTE: Source tables should be ordered by the inverse of the target object's dimensionality when loading data from relational sources into an analytic workspace.
SQL IMPORT is up to 7x faster than SQL FETCH.
    F. Use AW TRUNCATE instead of AW DELETE if you wish to keep the analytic workspace name. Performs better with less overhead.
    EXEC DBMS_AW.EXECUTE('AW TRUNCATE SCOTT.EMPAW');

  • The problem with the gaming performance

i am usin hp 15-g206ax notebook and it have a quadcore processor and 4gb ram and a 2gb graphic card but its gaming performance is not good Please tell me what i can do for improving the gaming performance

There is not much to be done. You have the AMD HD 8570M graphics with dedicated video memory. That is in the lower middle of the spectrum as far as gaming is concerned. Way better than most laptops but way less powerful than a true gaming machine. Just keep the drivers current is about all. Turn down visual effects. There is no upgrade possible for the hardware.

  • Unreasonably low gaming performance, reasonably stout machine

I have heard plenty of people having problems with their computers in regards to gaming but I wanted to see if anything has been figured out.
    My specs are:
    27" iMac Core i7 (mid-2011 model)
    3.4ghz
    quad core
    8gb ram
    768gb HD partition, 250gb free
AMD Radeon HD 6970M, 2gb video memory
When I first got this computer it was a fantastic gaming computer even when running OS X.  When I first installed Diablo III on it I was getting between 40-60fps easily.  Borderlands 2 was smooth as silk in the highest settings and at native resolution.
A year or so passed and I started gaming on the PC side with games that weren't available on the Mac.  I started noticing that my gaming performance really seemed to lag behind the PC side.  I booted up Borderlands 2 and now at the same settings as before it is unplayable.  I estimate no more than 10fps.  Diablo III is getting 6-8fps.  On the PC side Diablo is getting a solid 60fps with max settings.
It's obviously not the computer hardware itself.  Something changed between August of 2012 when I received this computer and now.  I believe the computer came installed with Mountain Lion (10.8) and I followed up the next year by installing Mavericks (10.9).  I did a clean install of Yosemite the other day and I am STILL having problems.  I am at my wits end.  This is the first time in 25 years (Apple IIgs was first) of owning Apple products where I am not able to rectify my own problems and honestly, my PC partition has yet to give me any problems so it is making me feel like I made a mistake buying a Mac.
I realize the Mac isn't as good of a gaming computer as a PC... I get that.  But when a game is working fine one day and a year later is unplayable... GRRRR.
    I am open to ideas.
      Model Identifier: iMac12,

Thanks but I read that in several places already.
I stated that I had this problem in Mavericks as well.  Working on downloading the Mavericks installer and I'm going to try a wipe and install (of mavericks) to see if that fixes it.

  • 2GB ram graphics, when good?

The mac of current build, 27 inch is going to replace current computer.
    These are tasks carried out
    - communication: faxing, e-Mails, IM, Skype, others
    - web browsing for information, news, office, financial, multimedia, knowledge setup
    - text processing, spread sheet, other basic office tasks
    - photos storage, basic processing, viewing
    - lan's central station, lan management, other clients management
    - financies, taxes in private household
    - private household management
    - basic photo edition: resize, change contrast/similar, vignietting
    - multimedia viewing sporadically
    - CAD if yes then in far future and simple one
    - gaming if yes then in far future and sporadically
    - movie cut/edition, if yes then in far future and not sophisticated
I wonder if 27inch mac will suffice for these tasks.
Dedicated graphics on current Windows based machine has 128MB 300MHz DDR
and is used along with SXGA - 1280x1024- resolution. We are quite satisfied with
    performance/quality of that graphics.
Is it advisable to order in this case the 2GB RAM graphics when purchasing
    now sleek new mac?

video memory is used for 2 things and 2 things only
    1. to store the image one show on the screen how much is resolution H * resolution V * colour depth
    so 1920*1080*4(32bit is 4 bytes)
so 8.29MBytes is anought video memory required to display your desktop
    2. 3d games and pro 3d programs use video memory to store textures it is to blt on the polygon surfaces if textures take up more memory then the video card itself has it have to store them in system memory which mean a bit hit in performance
if the game or program does not have textures to fill up the video memory they are left empty and not used
so if you use apps and games which only use 1GB texetures your system will be as fast with 1GB as with 2GB
