Satellite A15-1292

Hello,
my cd drive doesn't read my discs anymore. when I checked the properties of the drive I found that the location is "Location: Location 0 (0)". is this normal? When I double click the cd drive icon I get a message saying the cd/dvd might have a format that is not supported even though the dvd I have in is the recovery dvd that came with the laptop.
Note: I hardly use this drive.
Thanks in advance,
Mike

When I checked the drivers for the CD drive, I found that cdrom.sys, imapi.sys, redbook.sys, storprop.dll all have green check marks. Only Pxhelp20.sys didn't have a check mark. Is this the reason my cd drive isn't working!?

  • Satellite A15-S129 will not boot from CD - missing NTLDR message

I decided to do a fresh install on my neighbors A15-S129 Satellite. After trying all sorts of ways, I decided to remove the hard drive and reformat it in my computer. When I put it back in the satellite, I expected it to boot from the cd since the hard drive was blank, but no, I get the "missing ntldr message".
The Bios does not let the cursor move over to the side where I could change the boot order. When I start the computer, I cannot press f2 or f12 to change the boot order.
After no luck I just started doing all sorts of things to troubleshoot. One: I notice if I remove the hard drive and leave the slot blank, I get IDE error, then SURPRIZE!
The boot goes to the cd, BUT just when I thought I could just install, I get the screen that says missing hard drive, even if I hurry and push the hard drive in.
Why does the computer insist on doing one thing: starting windows xp, even if the drive is bank.
Why can't I, or rather, how can it make it skip the harddrive and move on to the cd drive?
I've never been stumpted like this before! Please help, my neighbor will have my head!

I solved the problem, and I decided to reply to add to this forums knowledge base.
The hard drive was "Locked" so even though I reformatted there remained data on there protected, and so the computer went though its boot sequence, and stopped at the hard drive, hence the NTLDR message. There was data still on there looking for Windows XP.
SO in order to do a fresh install, in my case install windows 98 and then upgrade to XP, I had to put the hard drive in another computer that had a floppy drive, boot from Windows 98 boot disk, when I got to a DOS prompt, change to C: , then type in LOCK /? , this unlocked the drive.
Then I used a little utility called WIPEOUT to clear the drive, then I typed REFORMAT C: , then started to install Win98, but stopped right after the install program copied files to the drive. Then I removed the hard drive and put it back in the Satellite (I would not have to have done it this way if the A-15 had a floppy!) and install continued, and all is fine.
    No repair center charges!

  • Satellite A15-S1292

    Hello,
My cd drive stopped working and I want to restore my laptop to the factory image. What are other options do I have? I could boot from network. The problem is the setup of a server is complex for me.
    Thanks in advance,
    Mike

Apart from the dead drive, about the only options I can think of are:
    1. Purchase an external optical drive. You should be able to pick one up for $50 - $100.
    2. If you have another machine with a functional optical drive, trying swapping out hard drives, just to restore. Though you may run into a image protection issue, where the recovery disk may not install to a different machine.
    3. Have this machines' optical drive repaired.

  • Do I need to format a New hard drive before Recovery & Apps/Drivers DVD? A15

    Greetings:
I just installed a new 80GB hard drive in my A15-S157 (Old I know, but works great for what I need it for).
I tried formating the new drive in an external enclosure on a different machine, but it always failed after noting format was 99%, even seemingly 100%, complete.
I downloaded and ran Western Digital (drive manufacturer) Data Lifeguard quick and extended tests, both came back no errors.
I used the "Toshiba Recovery and Application/Driver DVD, Satellite A15" disc that came w/the machine... everything seemsed to install just fine and XP boots right up.  BUT, I'm concerned that the format failure will come back to haunt me...
    The questions seem to be:
--Is there a problem with using the Recovery DVD WITHOUT first formatting the drive (or not having a successful format)?  Other posts seem to indicate the DVD might do a quick format itself (it was a very quick install)?
--Is it even possible to format a new HD in a USB external enclosure?  Perhaps this was the issue? (it was on an older Compaq desktop (XP), if it matters)
    Thank you!

Only OEM drives come that way.  Actual Retail drives come in a box with instructions, warranty card, installation disk, etc.
But that has nothing to do with this.  You only need to be concerned with what the instructions that came with the Recovery Disks or Installation disks say.  When you run Windows Install from an actual Windows Install Disk Windows will always bring up a partitioning and formatting option prior to the actual installation whether the drive is unpartitoned and unformatted or not.  This has been the case since the first Self Contained Windows came out (Windows 95).  It's been at least 15 years since one needed to partition and format a drive PRIOR to starting the actual Windows installation process.
Recovery Disks work in several different ways depending on the manufacturer.  One thing they have in common is that they are designed to work on new disks (unpartitioned and/or unformatted) as well as drives that already have an existing OS installed.
If you don't post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please try to post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.

  • Sound for a15-s1292

I downloaded the sa10sndx.exe file for my satellite a15-s1292 laptop.
When I clicked on the exe file, Winzip starts but it never finished. It is hanging on the last file extracted.
The setup.exe never starts. Does anyone have an idea why this is happening on my laptop with Windows XP?
I lost my hard drive and reinstalled windows XP SP2.

  • USB Ports & USB Card Bus Adapter

I have a Satellite A15-S127 that I bought brand new when they were released the end of May, 2003. In general, it has and still does run great. A few years back I went from using WindowsXP Home, which came pre-installed, to WindowsXP Pro. Just after that the 2 factory installed USB ports in the back of the laptop stopped working. I tried to get them back working and couldn't so I bought a 2 Port USB Card Bus Adapter, which has worked great giving me back useable USB ports.  Well, all of a sudden when I insert the Card Bus into the laptop, everything locks up. I can do nothing but remove it and hold down the power button to shut it down and reboot. I even bought a new Card Bus Adapter and it does the same thing. Now I have no useable USB ports.
Im hoping someone can help me to either get my originally installed USB ports working or to get my PC card slot working again.
    Thanks
        Logan Krewe

I wanted to add to this...I did plug in a CF card the other day and that was recognized.  I then tried my external hard drive directly again in a front USB port and it worked for a while (an hour or so).  Then it suddenly was not there anymore as if I'd ejected it even though I didn't.  Tried to put it back in and nothing.  This tells me it may be a hardware problem since it "recognized" it for a bit.  It's very frustrating.

  • Locating exact model information

I'm trying to determine exactly which Toshiba Satellite A10 I have. The label on the underside of my laptop only says "A10" no other model appellation such as "-100" etc.
Where would I look to locate this? I do not have any paperwork, as this laptop was given to me third or fourth-hand, all I have is the unit itself. I would like to look up the specifications, to determine if I can upgrade the RAM, etc, but need to know the exact model, to find the right spec sheets on the main web site.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!!

You should be able to use most of the drivers and utilities for any machine in the PSA10U part-number family.
One of them is the Satellite A15-S127, whose downloads are here.
    Good luck!

  • Satellite A40-SP151 - DL DVD-RW writer compatibility - ide#1 error

    Hi
Can anyone add to list of *compatible DVD writers for Satellite A40-SP151*
Googling the drives previously listed, they appeared to be just DVD-Roms/CDRW combo's.
    ie:
    Toshiba G8CC0000R810
    Hitachi G8CC00015810
    TEAC G8CC0001D810
    HITACHI G8CC0001K810
    Panasonic G8CC0001C810
    Toshiba SDR2412OAA
I'm trying to upgrade to a DL DVD-RW drive.
I can confirm Pioneer KD08 and Panasonic UJ-850 FWv1.10 are _not_ compatible, the latter I cannot find any firmware for (to try and swap master / slave settings)..(Dont want to mess with the Pioneer)
I think the TOSHIBA DVDRW/CDRW COMBO Part No. SD-R6112 is compatible if anyone can confirm this?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hello,
this problem can be solved by simple "upgrade" of Yours new drve (which is not compatible).
    Solution :
    http://www.motherboardpoint.com/t135374-internal-burner-not-detected-tosh-1805.html
that means opening new drive cover and some soldering (this can void new drives warranty ....)
You need jumpering pins 45 & 47 of new DVD drive connector
This worked for Satellite 1800 series, Satellite A10/A15 series notebooks- few drives were upgraded.
But "Making this modification requires not only soldering, but
EXTREMELY fine soldering. Most users will not be able to perform this
    on their own.." .
By my opinion is better to give some $$ for technician who ia able to do this soldering job and
not to search compatible drives, as I know ,is not very easy to find ...

  • SATELLITE C855D-S5320 Help me please!

Hi I'm new here, a student, and recently my parents bought me a Toshiba SATELLITE C855D-S5320 for my birthday a month ago from Walmart.com. It runs Windows 8.It worked just fine for 3 weeks until yesterday.
Yesterday, I started my laptop and I had to go run an errand. When I came back and restarted the laptop again, this booting message showed up: "CHECKING MEDIA FAIL" then this follows "NO BOOTABLE DEVICE -- PLEASE RESTART THE SYSTEM"
I don't have any clue about laptops, hard disk drives, recovery disks, etc.  I can't return this laptop to Walmart because it's too late. 15 days have already passed so I can't refund or return it. I don't know what's warranty but I doubt this laptop had it. I looked all over the internet and forums for help. I did try the F12 button to make sure that it is booting from HDD but the laptop still showing the same messages and is not booting up.
    1. HDD/SSD
    2. USB
    3. ODD
    4. LAN
I pressed F2 while it powered up and in the Setup Utility, the CPU type, CPU speed, HDD/SSD, ODD,Total Memory Size, System BIOS Version, and EC Version are all in gray text.
I'm really confused and scared. This is a brand new laptop and I can't return it or refund it. My parents are mad at me because they think I messed it up but I'm telling the truth, I didn't do anything! Our family doesn't have a lot of money and we're going a bit of bad luck nowadays so I really don't want my folks to spend more of their money on me or trouble them more.
This is my computer brand: http://us.toshiba.com/computers/laptops/satellite/C850/C855D-S5320/
I really really appreciate it if anyone can help!

    Hello --
I'n not really replying but I'm new here and can't figure out how the heck
    else to post a question!
I also have a C855D-S5320 laptop. Now, when it hibernates and I touch
a key, it doesn't bring up the log-in screen. It just brings up a blank screen.
So, I have to use the power key and turn the laptop ALL the way off.
Once it has been completely turned off it brings up the log-in screen
    and everything is fine.
I tried removing the battery but that didn't fix it. Other than this issue,
it works fine, and it's only 3-4 months old. Thanks, if you have any
    ideas!

  • Satellite P300D-10v - Question about warranty

    HI EVERYBODY
I have these overheating problems with my laptop Satellite P300D-10v.
I did everything I could do to fix it without any success..
I get the latest update of the bios from Toshiba. I cleaned my lap with compressed air first and then disassembled it all and cleaned it better.(it was really clean insight though...)
BUT unfortunately the problem still exists...
So i made a research on the internet and I found out that most of Toshiba owners have the same exactly problem with their laptop.
Well i guess this is a Toshiba bug for many years now.
Its a really nice lap, cool sound (the best in laptop ever) BUT......
So I wanted to make a question. As i am still under warranty, can i return this laptop and get my money back or change it with a different one????
If any body knows PLS let me know.
    chears
    Thanks in advance

    Hi
I have already found you other threads.
    Regarding the warranty question;
If there is something wrong with the hardware then the ASP in your country should be able to help you.
The warranty should cover every reparation or replacement.
But I read that you have disasembled the laptop at your own hand... hmmm if you have disasembled the notebook then your warrany is not valid anymore :(
I think this should be clear for you that you can lose the warrany if you disasemble the laptop!
By the way: you have to speak with the notebook dealer where you have purchased this notebook if you want to return the notebook
The Toshiba ASP can repair and fix the notebook but you will not get money from ASP.

I think the DMI information needs updating. The service center should have done this when the mainboard was replaced, so take it back to them and ask them to update it.
