Satellite A200: Cannot use external USB devices properly

I encountered a problem with my Toshiba notebook and i can't fix it and I am in need your help please..
The problem is that when i connect a USB portable device (external USB harddisk , iPod ,Flash memory ..etc) with more than 8GB of Memory..
It's not properly installed in device manager and appears under "universal serial bus controller ".
But it doesn't say that it's an unknown device. It appears normally with its name, but it's not properly installed (it doesn't say that either ) where it is supposed to be under a specific category (harddisk under "disk drives" , camera under "imaging devices " and so on )
And i can't use the device because the HDD doesn't appear in "My computer" and my iPod can't be used
I'd like to inform you that this problem is with all USB devices with more than 8GB of memory.
Not just one device. I tried many devices to make sure that it's not a problem with the device.
So it's a problem with my laptop and i installed Windows many times with no progress.
Thanks for your help in advance ..

Is it XP or Vista?
If its XP, ensure you have at least Service Pack 2.
This hotfix may help XP see high capacity media:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934428
but that wouldn't really affect external USB HDD's.

  • MBP Does Not Recognize External USB Devices

MBP does not "see" external USB devices (such as Garmin Nuvi GPS) or any thumb drive. No external USB devices show up in Finder nor does Disk Utility see them. No cable issues. Have tried restarting several times, but to no avail. This MBP used to recognize these USB devices, but no longer do so.
I have seen this question posed several times in forum, but no suitable answer. Don't know if it is H/W or S/W problem.

    Hi Terry Temple
Is there at least any power going to the USB ports? ( as in if for example you plug in a USB light, will it switch on? )
If there is power in the USB ports it might be a software problem.
Try resetting the SMC see link: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411
also try re-set the PRAM see link: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
However if you do not have any power at all it probably is a hardware problem.
    Is it still under warranty?

  • Notebook hangs if there's an app actively using external USB disk

...right before going into sleep mode.
I have this notebook and an external USB SATA drive hooked up to it. When I put the laptop into sleep mode, then resume its work, after a while I'll get a blank screen that essentially looks a lot like tty1, all black background and gray symbols all over the screen. Essentially, the message I get is the following:

By playing around I learned that if I kill transmission and any app that actively uses the USB disk prior to the sleep mode, and then start them after resume is finished and the disk is mounted (I use GNOME 3 in fallback mode, so it automounts the disk) everything works fine.
Now, I could ignore those messages but it gets worse. Mostly laptop will hang at a random point in time after printing that wall of text on tty1. It might take hours, or even days before this happens. Sometimes I'll find transmission in a freezed state and I may survive a couple of sleep and resume cycles but I almost never will go as far as 4 days and more in a row. The laptop will hang eventually. And the only way to avoid this is to kill off apps that use external USB drive prior to going into sleep mode.
Any ideas what's going on and how to fix this?

  • NFS export external USB device fails

I am trying to NFS export a FAT32 formatted external USB device, which fails with the error:
    /sbin/nfsd: Can't export /Volumes/<external>: Operation not supported (45)
I am able to export internal/HFS drives, which have the "Owners Enabled: Yes" attribute, and therefore assume I need to set the flag accordingly on my external drive.
Despite the fact that the device has been assigned a uuid (it appears to be in place in .fseventsd and running 'repair disk' echos it in syslog), I get this error when running vsdbutil:
vsdbutil: Couldn't update volume information for '/Volumes/<external>/': Invalid argument
vsdbutil: no valid volume UUID found on '/Volumes/<external>/': Invalid argument
    And diskutil returns this:
Permissions are not enabled on the disk (-9973)
I attempted to add the uuid to /var/db/volinfo.database in order to set the permissions there, to no effect.
I don't believe that I am the only person who has attempted this, but I can find no evidence to the contrary. Thank you.

NFS exporting requires specific NFS serving support from the file system.
Unfortunately, the "msdos" file system implementation doesn't currently
    support NFS exporting.
If you'd like that support added, I would strongly encourage filing a
    bug report/enhancement request with Apple:

  • Cant mount external USB Device?

After Os X Lion installation on MacBook Pro, external devices dont mount?

What kind of external USB device are you having a problem with?

  • Cannot boot from external USB device

    Hi,
I have an iMac with a superdrive that is not working. This gives me a lot of trouble, because I want to install windows.
Some month ago, I bought an external USB DVD drive, and hoped that it would help. But I quickly experienced that it did not, since I could not get boot camp to use it.
Today, I was sure that I found a good solution. I ran into a site that explains how to use en external DVD to install windows on macbook air which have no internal DVD.
    http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/9136/macbook-air-install-windows-7-with-boot-camp -without-an-external-dvd-drive/
Unfortunately this do not work - for me and my iMac.
First I installed the rEFIt tool and this works fine. The external DVD shows up as a bootable device.
But when I try to start the windows installer from the external DVD, the system just hangs and shows a windows logo with no color. This operation I carry out by selecting the external DVD in the eEFIt menu.
    Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I don't know about the link you gave, I can only pass on my experience.
I made my bootable Windows7 X64 install disk by this method:-
"This method is used to create a new install disk if you have your authentic Windows 7 disk. Don't sweat it; it's much easier than it looks.
Note: you will need to do this on a PC
In your C drive, create these two folders: c:\windows7exe c:\windows7dvd
Go to this link http://rapidshare.com/files/297067205/oscdimg.exe and download Oscdimg.exe. Place it into c:\window7exe folder
Insert your Windows 7 disk into your DVD drive For this example, we will refer to it as the D drive.
You need to open a DOS prompt window. Do this by going to start/programs/accessories/command prompt
Your default command prompt will look something like C:\Users>.
At the prompt type cd c:\windows7exe
Your command prompt should now look like c:\window7exe>
At the command prompt, type in exactly (or copy and paste):
    oscdimg.exe -n -m -bd:\boot\etfsboot.com d:\ c:\windows7x64.iso
Note: the letter d in the above command refers to your DVD drive, change it if your DVD drive is labled with a different letter.
Press Enter. This will begin creating a new disk image. You should see a response in the DOS window that displays its progress.
When the process is complete, you will find a new disk image of your Windows 7 disk in the folder labeled c:\windows7X64
Now that you have a new disk image, you need to burn it onto a disk using ImgBurn. This is a free utility which you can download from here: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download
Place a blank DVD into your DVD RW drive.
Launch ImgBurn and select "Write image file to disc". In the Source window, find your newly burned image in the c:\windows7X64 folder. Click on the disc icon at the bottom of the window to begin the burning process.
Voila! You have a new Windows 7 installation disk which will install with no problems. "
    .....which is on this thread
May not be any use to you without an internal DVD RW which works.
In your shoes I would really want to get my internal superdrive working.
A quick look at iFixit suggests the iMac uses a standard laptop DVD RW which are readily available, but perhaps I am missing something.

  • Cannot mount external USB drive

During a recent update I remember pacman asking about replacing some package with another package to handle disk mounting.  I think the added package was "gnome-volume-manager" or "gnome-disk-utility" (or both).  I didn't see any postings describing problems with doing this, so went ahead and allowed the change.  Now it's a few days later and I find I cannot mount an external USB hard drive anymore.  It has an entry in fstab, and although I have tried mutiple edits of the device to associate the drive with, nothing works.
The disk used to associate with /dev/sdb1.  Now this device no longer exists.  Here is what has happened to my /dev/sd* entries:
    brw-rw---- 1 root disk    8,  0 2009-10-27 11:08 /dev/sda
    brw-rw---- 1 root disk    8,  3 2009-10-27 11:08 /dev/sda3
    brw-rw---- 1 root disk    8,  1 2009-10-27 11:08 /dev/sda1
    brw-rw---- 1 root disk    8,  2 2009-10-27 11:08 /dev/sda2
    brw-rw---- 1 root disk    8,  4 2009-10-27 11:08 /dev/sda4
    brw-rw---- 1 root storage 8, 16 2009-11-04 13:00 /dev/sdb
Trying to force association with "/dev/sdb"  "/dev/sda5" (or some other number not in use) or "sdb1" (or 2,3,4, whatever)  just yields "special device ... does not exist".
Does anybody know how to deal with this?
Does anybody know what package(s) I replaced when the update in question took place?  I think I'd like to reverse whatever happened.
And on another note, I think another gnome-based package also recently replaced a package relating to printing.  Yesterday I discovered I have printing problems too:
At first there were no printers found.  Although cups is supposed to start according to rc.conf, cupsd was not running.  I started it manually and then all the printers showed up again, though I cannot print duplex (again, worked fine before).  What is going on with these gnome packages?!?  Anyone know which package(s) I need to remove (and then what to put back) to make printing work like it used to also?
    thanks much.

oddly, fdisk -l shows nothing, even for disks which are mounted (eg. /dev/sda4).  when I insert a standard USB thumb drive, the following show up properly:
    brw-rw---- 1 root storage 8, 32 2009-11-05 10:50 /dev/sdc
    brw-rw---- 1 root storage 8, 33 2009-11-05 10:50 /dev/sdc1
and I am able to mount and use the drive as usual.
The external drive I've been struggling with has xfs for filesystem type.  After using the thumb drive, /dev/sdb showed up spontaneously, but no /dev/sdb1.  attempting to mount gives:
mount: /dev/sdb is not a valid block device
    or
mount: special device /dev/sdb1 does not exist
depending on which device is specified in fstab.
I am thinking that either a) my ability to mount xfs filesystems has somehow been hosed, or b) there is something wrong with drive, which must have spontaneously failed very recently (it is less than 1 yr old, but this happens from time to time).
If the drive is okay, any ideas about how mounting xfs filesystems could have been broken by recent upgrades?
btw, the fstab entry (which worked fine until a couple days ago) is:  /dev/sdb1 /mnt/external_1 xfs rw,noauto, user, exec 0 0

  • [SOLVED] Kernel panic when using external USB hard drive

I have a desktop PC with a 64 bit arch install, on a Core2 Duo 6320 CPU. I have been using (and continue using right now) a 500 GB "Iomega Desktop Hard Drive" external USB hard disk without problems. Each time I try to format it or to copy data from the PC, Arch freezes with a kernel panic. Sometimes it freezes faster and I cannot see anything, but others I am able to see the following kernel messages, repeating several times:

Strange enough, the drive is listed by lsusb command as a 2TB but I don't think this is related to the problem (as the OS sees the 3 TB). This is the lsusb output:

I have tried the drive on other PCs and it works flawlessly. Also tried booting Windows 8 on the same PC I have Arch installed in, and in Windows it also works perfect. I have tried using ext2 and NTFS filesystems. Tried also changing the USB cable without success. And right now I'm out of ideas. Any suggestions?

  • Mac Pro no longer mounts external usb devices

    Hi there,
Last week my mac pro stopped mounting my ipod shuffle as a disk (i was using it like a usb memory stick), i thought it was a problem with the shuffle and left it aside. But just yesterday the mac stopped mounting my external lacie 500gb disk. I had never had any problems before this.
I then tried both the shuffle and external hd on my powerbook g4. They work perfectly!
I then thought it might have been a problem with the usb ports on the mac pro - although all my other usb devices were still working - so i booted into xp with bootcamp, and the devices were recognised in xp perfectly.
After searching various threads on different forums the general idea for this problem seemed to be to reinstall osx, which i have just done, and no joy. Im still not able to mount either of these devices.
System profiler sees the devices, but thats it.
Also, i recently bought a new usb memory stick (as i thought the shuffle was dead), this mounts and works perfectly!
    Anyone got any ideas?!
    Thanks

Yes, i did the combo update immediatly after reinstalling osx and before pluggin in the usb device.
The problem developed just before the release of 10.4.9, so i dont think it was the update that did it.
I've only just got this MP back from Apple. The PSU had to be replaced. It took them nearly 3 weeks to do

  • Satellite A200 - Cannot change language on Toshiba OEM CD

Hoping to find some help on how to change my Toshiba Satellite A200 from Spanish Language to English.
I asked a friend to buy me this notebook from Spain, unknowing to him the OEM came in spanish language and the recovery CD as only is only spanish but i don't understand spanish and i have been finding it difficult to go about the notebook since i don't want to click the wrong thing in spanish.
Even when i install programs, it automatically installs in spanish and this is really frustrating,
    Somebody HELP!!!

The notebooks are country specific products. That means that every notebook manufacturer offers product with country specific keyboard and operating system.
Toshiba recovery image is not multilingual installations image and you cannot install Vista on English using this DVD.
What you need is Microsoft Vista installations DVD on English language. Drivers, tools and utilities for your notebook on English language you can find on European Toshiba support page under http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com

  • IMac FireWire port used for USB device

I have a 27" iMac which of course has a FireWire port, but I don't own any external FireWire devices. I'd like to put that empty port to use as a USB port to connect an external storage device. Is there a cable, converter, or adapter made to do that?

Common user always looks at the bottom line price on computer peripherals and USB devices are always cheaper. USB 2.0, in theory, should be faster than FireWire 400, but they usually aren't because of the way USB transfers data in short bursts or packets of data. FireWire 400 and 800 drives are faster as they transmit data in a more continuous, constant and reliable stream of data.
This is why devices that use FireWire or have both USB and FireWire connections are always more expensive.
So, those users never use the FireWire port.
FireWire is faster for external hard drives, especially data transfers and for booting and running a Mac from an external FireWire drive. FireWire optical drives are faster. FireWire audio devices and interface devices are even faster and more reliable than USB.
FireWire is more expensive, but more reliable data transfer protocol.
There is no way to bridge the two device protocols . It's either one or the other. The masses always choose the cheaper USB devices.
The masses don't care about faster and consistent data transfer rates or  better reliability.
Especially if a user isn't some sort of creative like a graphics, designer, Illustrator, photographer, digital painer/3D-CGI Artist, engineer, audio or video/multimedia professional.

    Hi
You can only boot from this devices:
USB FDD, Primary HDD, Optical devices, Network (LAN)
You can not boot from the USB HDD.

  • N86: charging using external usb battery

    Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone found a solution for charging the N86 using an external USB battery. I have two such batteries and my N86 refuses to charge from either of them. One of them works flawlessly with the iPhone so I know it's supplying at least 1000mA.
I was wondering if we need a special USB cable other than the one supplied by Nokia.
    Any pointers would be appreciated.

USB charging is a lower voltage charge but I think you should still unplug the player after it's been fully charged. While tranferring tracks or organizing the music it won't really make a difference. I know that a couple nights ago I charged a player over night (Meaning it was plugged in for like 5 hours with a full charge) and the battery's charge seemed to drain a little more quickly. I know this is highly anecdotal but just some thoughts.
I don't see the need to rate the music on the player (most of my music is ripped straight from CD so it's all pretty good) and for what most people use a Mass Storage Device for personal files or maybe a few movies and 2 gigs is more than enough.

  • 12GB too Small- using external USB/HDD for game storage?

    Hi,
Our old PS3 broke, we just bought a new one "Super slim". Our old PS3 had a Hard Drive with 60GB it was easy to instal 3 games and play them.
The new PS3 only has 12GB space. We installed 1 game and coulnd't even instal a second one because it didn't have enough space !
We tried to find answers on the internet on how to use a USB Stick as a storage device for the Game Data. However I couldn't find an answer.
We have it formatted on FAT32 however we can't seem to put Game Data on it.
If anyone knows how to use a USB Stick as storage device for Game Data please we need your help.
PS: I am not talking about Save Data (These files are 2MB) I am talking about the Game Data like 8GB each Game.

Are you sure an External Hard Drive wouldn't work ? I've seen some official Sony External Hard Drives for ps3. If an External Hard Drive does work on a PS3 could you explain how and also why a USB Stick doesn't work and an External Hard Drive would ? An external drive won't work because the transfer speed is simply too slow for game data to be usefully stored on it.
For example, using a USB drive I attempted to boot Windows XP. This took approximately 30 minutes, and then lagged unbelievably with even the most basic operations. When running a full blown game, this sort of speed of operation would be useless which is why it's not a feature. Hopefully that explains it a bit.I care to disagree, PS3 has USB 2.0 which has 60MB/s transfer speed, which is a bit more then most HDD can do. So in theory it would work but "Sony" has policy to do everything can don't want and don't do what they want. So the issues you had were propably due to something else.

  • Satellite U925t cannot boot from USB

    Hi
I cannot boot from USB flash drive on Satellite U925t. I use bootable USB flash drive inserted (Hiren Boot 15.2, sure booted on another laptop), restart the system. When the splash screen is displayed, press F12 to access the boot menu, selecting USB - but laptop no boot from USB.
    Please, Help me.
    Thank you very much

From within Windows, try holding SHIFT when you select Shut down. Is there any change then?
Also, try entering the UEFI settings, disabling Secure Boot, and changing UEFI to CSM.
