Satellite A210-17X - PSAFGE-03600LFR - DVD-RAM upgrade

Hello,
I currently have a Toshiba laptop Satellite A210-17X - PSAFGE-03600LFR, after upgrading RAM and HDD, I would need some help to upgrade my DVD-RAM. The original MAT****A (Panasonic) DVD-RAM UJ-870 is not working any more because the laser cell seems to be damaged, it will not recognize any disk whether CD-ROM or DVD and firmaware update provided by Toshiba Europe Support did not change any thing.
Because I need to replace it, I would rather like to install a more recent, more performant, quieter model, but I am having difficulties finding such replacement.
First of all, the front "faade" of the current drive is smaller on the right hand-side than on the left hand-side and most model I find have a rectangular "faade" - i.e. both sides have the same size so it will not fit in the laptop. Is that "faade" removeable so that I could take that of the old drive off and put it on the new one?
Would someone be able to provide me with some help in choosing the correct replacement drive?
Thank you in advance
Kind regards
Eric

Hi PauPau, Hi Macius,
This is brilliant thank you very much for that information. I will be looking into it shortly. I am currently struggling a bit to upgrade another Toshiba Satellite with W7 x64 Ultimate but that I will post in another subject.
Yes, thank you for asking, I found out how to remove/install DVD-RAM on my laptop. I upgraded the HDD which was getting unhealthy. I upgraded RAM and I also opened the laptop case so that I could get to the fan and clean it.
I will let you know how I am doing once I will have purchased and installed a new DVD-RAM. Although I am still wondering whether it is worth it. I know that it is very practical in many cases, but I have learned to use USB bootable Flash drive since my BIOS Firmware upgrade allows me to boot from such devices.
Otherwise, I do not really use CD-ROM/DVD-RAM anymore, NAS, external HDD, Mem sticks, SDHC cards, etc.. are so much more convenient to use.
Would you mind sharing your point of view on this?
Cheers
Eric

Sorry mate but its very difficult to understand your message.
What I could understand is that you have some BIOS problem.
BIOS is an very serious theme Issue with BIOS are not easy to solve since in most cases the EPROM module where the BIOS is stored must be re-flashed using special BIOS crisis disk. In worst cases there could be an serious motherboard problem and this would mean that motherboard has to be replaced.
If the notebook would no pass Toshiba splash screen, the POST (power on self test) could not be passed and this means that there must be serious hardware problem.
Unfortunately, some issue requires additional help from service engineer.

  • Satellite A210 - can't write DVD-DL - need firmware for LG GSA-T20N

I have problem with my DVD drive... I can't write DVD-DL discs (DVD+DL too).
I'm looking for a firmware for my drive.
On Toshiba Support I can find only firmware for Pioneer and Toshiba (TSSTCorp) drives.
Lg says that Toshiba should have newest firmware.

    Hi
I checked the Toshiba European driver page and found tree different firmware updates for TS-L632H, TS-L632 and TS-L632P but there is no update for LG GSA-T20N.
If you are not able to burn the data on some double layer disks then you should try different brands.
As far as I know your user manual should contains some details and information about the supported and compatible disks.
    Check it!

  • Satellite A210-17R (PSAFG) XP driver collection thread

    Good morning,
after realizing that my new NB doesn't come with any drivers AT ALL, I started searching the web for working Windows XP drivers.
I'll use this thread to post links to those drivers, so that like-minded Windows Vista haters can use their notebook with the Windows XP.
I hope we can figure it all out one by one. I'll start posting links tonight when I'm at home and have the links.

    Update:
I was getting a little ahead of myself there with the WLan drivers.
The following ones should work with a little tweaking (thx to Christoph at www.office-loesung.de)
    ftp://210.51.181.211/cn/wlan/RTL8187B_driver_only.zip
open .inf file - insert 2 lines of text here:

  • Satellite A210 - Built in webcam doesnt work

After i reinstall my notebook (Satellite A210) with the factory DVD, my webcam get this error... "Webcam driver open fail. Please restart camera or computer".
What can be wrong? I have this notebook only 1 month and I bought it as brand new notebook.

It is very stupid situation. I have A200 with web cam and when OS installation is finished starts one small wizard and check if webcam is there or not. Hardware is recognised and all necessary drivers will be installed. After restart everything works well.
I presume the same should happen when you try to install your A210. Am I right? Try with recovery installation again. Maybe next time everything will be ok.

  • Question about memory upgrade on Satellite A210-127

I upgraded my memory form 2Gb (2x1 Gb) to 4Gb (2x2 Gb) with two Kingston memory modules KVR667D2S5/2G (PC2-5300 CL5).
For two weeks there were no problems but then I got blue screen every time when system boots reffering to I guss memory error.
I tried to replace memory with original Toshiba's modules but blue screen remains. I have conctacted the service and they say that
it may be memory incompatibility, virus or hard disk malfunction.
After few days of working on the solution I reinstal my laptop with Toshiba DVD and replace original memory. Now everything works fine.
I wonder is Kingston memory cause of my problem or somethig else?
Does anyone know is Kingston memory KVR667D2S5/2G 2Gb compatibile with Toshiba?

I've got an answer forom Kingston Customer Service Specialist:
    Dear Mr. Sekovanic,
Thank you for your e-mail and for your interest in Kingston Technology.
Please note that the memory module with the part number KVR667D2S5-2G is a ValueRAM generic part, built to industry guidelines meeting the JEDEC standard. As they are not tested on any motherboard, we cannot guarantee compatibility of these modules with a specific system.
The branded memory module KTT667D2/2G is designed, manufactured and tested in a specific systems or system series, such as the Toshiba Satellite A210-127. Although the technical specifications are quite similar we do not recommend to use the ValueRAM module on a specific system as yours.
We trust that the above information will be of assistance to you. However, should you have further queries please do not hesitate to contact us.
    so it's not compatibille.

I would like to upgrade my Satellite 1800-700 memory to 1024 RAM. My operating system is Windows XP. I currently have 512 RAM and the BIOS 2.20 TRAD.
However, it would allow me to install 2x512 RAM.
    Please can anyone help?
    Thank you kindly.

I have found your laptop specifications:
    Satellite 1800-700 Memory Specifications
    Standard Memory 128 MB (removable)
    Maximum Memory 512 MB
    Memory Expansion 2 sockets
    Memory Comments PC133 SDRAM SODIMMs

    Model Comments 100MHz FSB
So, as you see, the maximum supported memory is 512 mb

  • After upgrading from Win 8 to 8.1 my DVD RAM GT80N SATA Drive is no longer working

After upgrading from Win 8 to 8.1 my  DVD RAM GT80N SATA Drive is no longer recognizing discs. When I first put a disc in the drive runs for a bit and then stops. I've tried updating the driver but it says it has the most current driver. Under manage, it does not show any error codes and it says it is working correctly. I've looked at the regedit and it does not have any of upper and lower filters. I've tried disabling, rebooting, and reenabling. What am I missing? Another issue I've had since upgrading is that my network adapter needs reset several times a day in order to remain connected to wifi.

  • Satellite L30-105 (PSL33E) Windows Vista does not see DVD-ram UJ-850s

    Hi
I have a Satellite L30-105 (PSL33E) with windows Vista. Windows Vista doesn't recognize the DVD-ram any more. The BIOS recognize the DVD-ram. I did try to download the DVD-ram drivers but they are not on the side of Toshiba.
Who can help me to get the right driver or know more? From the problems with the Mat****a DVD-ram uj-850s ATA device and windows Vista.

    Hi
The CD/DVD drive does not need special drivers!!!
The Vista includes a Microsoft driver which works with all ODDs (CD/DVD drives)
Simply said, the Vista should recognize the drive without any problems.
Some questions; did you get any error messages? What is the device manager status? Do you see any yellow exclamation marks?
There is an old way to fix a similar drive issue. It worked under XP so try it on Vista OS.
Its necessary to update the registry entry
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    1. Click on the start menu.
    2. If this is a Vista machine in the search box type in regedit without the quotation marks.
    3. search the registry key mentioned above.
    4. In the right panel youll see something along the lines of UpperFilter and LowerFilter you want to click on each filter key and hit delete. Click yes when it asks to confirm if you wish to delete the key.
    5. Restart Windows.
    6. Let me know if this works.

  • Re: Satellite A660 - No boot after RAM upgrade

    I have just gotten 8GB of RAM for my Satellite A660, it is Corsair CM3X4GSD1066 4GB PC-8500 (1066MHz) 204-pin SO-DIMM DDR3 RAM CL7.
The system posts fine and the 8GB is showing up in BIOS but once its clears post and goes to load Windows it stops on the black screen, the cursor flashes a few times then it stops. I have left it for about 5 minutes and it wont boot through.
    Please Help.
I have replaced the 4GB sticks and it works fine.

    Hello
For me it sounds like that the modules are not compatible or have defective sectors
As Akuma wrote, such performance modules are risky in notebook because you dont have any options to change the latency values as on desktop computers. So I always prefer Kingston modules for notebook RAM upgrade.
But before you buy other modules, try a BIOS update and load the default settings.
