Satellite A30-504 - maximum size HDD - will 160GB work?

Hi guys,
I've a good old A30-504, and the 40GB HDD died a few days ago... I had to buy a new one but the smallest one I can get is 120GB or 160GB.
(Samsung HM121HC or HM160HC)
will it work in my laptop or should I choose a 40-80GB second-hand one?
regards,
Zoltan

Hi
Everything depends on your HDD controller.
If the HDD controller support only 28bit LBA then your could use max 120GB HDD.
If your HDD controller supports 48bit LBA then you could use bigger HDDs.
The ATA-6 defines Ultra DMA/100 (also called Ultra DMA mode 5 or Ultra-ATA100) and it support 48bit LBA.
ATA-5 and lower versions support only 28bit LBA.

  • How to replace CMOS battery on Satellite A30-504?

i have big problems with my satellite A30-504...it does'nt see the HDD on boot, my only solution so far was to press the power button for many times.
My HDD is ok so i think the problem is with the cmos battery but i dont know how to find out what type it is and how to replace it.
(ps. sorry my english, i'm not an english speaker)

    Hi Adrian
CMOS battery is always placed an awkward position and to exchange the battery the unit must be disassembled. If you didnt done this before please dont do this alone. A small mistake and you can damage plastic cover of the unit.
I recommend you to contact service and let them do this for you. It costs a little bit but you will be sure it will be done on professional way. When the unit is disassembled it can also be cleaned from the dust.
Back to HDD: how you know HDD is not defective?

  • Need drivers for my Satellite A30-504

WHERE CAN I FIND DRIVERS FOR THIS MODEL? PLS HELP! I WILL DIE SOON DUE TO A HEART ATTACK SEARCHING FOR DRIVERS...
sorry for the big fonts but i am desperate...show me a link pls!

    Hi desperate
    it's easy.
    1) Follow this link: http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/download_drivers_bios.jsp?service=EU
    2) Step your way through the dropdowns via Notebook, Satellite, Satellite A Series and finally Satellite A30.
    3) Wait 2-3 seconds until page is refreshed
    4) Choose operating system (most likely Windows XP)
    5) Choose what specific driver you need or maybe All.
    Good luck

  • Using Lacie DVD enclosure with new HDD : Will it work ?

May be a silly question. Seems that my Lacie Firewire 400 External DVD burner with a 7.5 " enclosure is no longer working. Should I decide to buy an External Drive
for my Powermac G4. Will I encounter any difficulties installing the drive ?
    Comments welcome.

With FireWire, you may not have any problems, but there's always the possibility that the bridge board in the enclosure isn't programmed for use with a hard drive (fixed media). An optical drive is classified as a removable media device. I tried connecting a hard drive to the bridge board from a Sony DVD burner enclosure with FireWire/USB 2.0 connectivity, but it wasn't recognized. Try it - you won't damage anything, but make sure the hard drive is configured as "master" and not the factory default of "cable select."

  • Satellite A30 - Are there any Vista drivers?

    Hello.
I have a Toshiba Satellite A30-504 laptop for 5 years now, which came with WinXp preinstalled on it.
I want now to change it for Windows Vista, which I have checked and can run on my system.
The only thing I now need are drivers. I've checked the site and I can't find any... But I've read that people +did+ install Vista on their A30 Satellites... Do you know where I could possibly find the drivers?
    Thank you.

I understand you but in the whole story you must be a little bit realistic. You probably know that Microsoft has for Vista usage defined some rules (hardware specification) and notebook manufacturers must offer hardware that will work with new hardware components.
In the whole story sound chip was very interesting.
Anyway support for one specific notebook model is not so easy because all drivers, tools and utilities must be created. So you must understand that Toshiba has offered so many models after your A30 and it is logic that Toshiba has made a kind of dead line and older notebooks as model xy will not be Vista supported.
The same is with other notebook manufacturers.

  • MBP 500gb Internal Drive Replacement - Will it work?

    Hello all.
    I'm looking to upgrade the drive in my MBP (15" 2.4 ghz 4gb RAM, currently with a Toshiba MK2035GS 200gb drive installed). The new Hitachi Travelstar 5K500 (500 GB - internal - 2.5" - SATA-300 - 5400 rpm - buffer: 8 MB) is just what I need.
Question is, is it physically the right size and will it work? Anything I need to watch out for?
I'm aware of the warranty implications and have replaced a PB drive before with no problems.
I'm also aware that there is a difference between SATA 1 and SATA 2 drives.
But that's the extent of my knowledge.
Can anyone let me know if this would work?

In other words, you do the switch and something else breaks down later, Apple will refuse to repair for free claiming that the damage was due to unauthorized personnel fiddling with the innards.
Don't think so. IF something is damaged at the time of replacement yes. It will not void failure of other devices. Having this done by an Authorized Apple Service Provider would be a good way of doing something like this.

  • Satellite A30 - Can I install a bigger HDD?

I thought I had been careful with bits of kit and boards. but after rebuilding my A30 (having had the DC socket replaced), it comes up with the following messages:
*SMART Failure predicted on Hard Disk 0: TOSHIBA MK4018GAS (PM)*
*WARNING: Immediately back-up your data and replace your hard disk drive. A failure may be imminent.*
    *Press F1 to continue*
I have tried refitting board connector to HDD socket, which seems OK.
So am beginning to think I have killed this disk somehow. If so, can I install a bigger disk, say 80 or even 160 GB, and should I look for magic word MK4018GAS, or is it SATA or IDE, I am looking for.
    Thanks. Robin

    Hi!
If you remove the old HDD you can see ifs a IDE or SATA HDD but the Satellite A30 is equipped with a IDE HDD.
You can use a bigger HDD. This should not be a problem but as far as I know this notebook has a 28bit LBA limitation. That means the disk size limit is 128GB and so you can only use an HDD up to 120GB.
If you want to know more about this read the article on Wikipedia or here: http://www.48bitlba.com
So you can buy a 120GB HDD or a 80GB HDD as you suggested. I have good experience with Hitachi and Seagate HDDs.
Anyway, I think its a good idea to exchange the HDD. SMART error message appears only if there is something wrong with the HDD so backup your data as fast as possible. ;)

    Hi Experts,
If Dimension exceeds maximum size then what will we do???
My dought was how to increase the dimension size in SSAS 2008 R2???
           i am using SQL SERVER 2008 R2.
i had faced this question in one of the interview.so,Could you explain with an example.
    Best Regards,

You can't exceed the maximum, else you get error. The maximum is a huge number:
    Object
    Maximum sizes/numbers
    Databases in an instance
    2^31-1 = 2,147,483,647
    Dimensions in a database
    2^31-1 = 2,147,483,647
    Attributes in a dimension
    2^31-1 = 2,147,483,647
    Members in a dimension attribute
    2^31-1 = 2,147,483,647
    User-defined hierarchies in a dimension
    2^31-1 = 2,147,483,647
    Levels in a user-defined hierarchy
    2^31-1 = 2,147,483,647

  • Will a dual core cpu fit im my Satellite 2410-504

HI Im thinking of upgrading my cpu to dual core I have a Satellite S2410-504 socket 478 mPGA , im want to put a Intel core duo sl9bn inside. Will this work?
    any help please

A Core Duo would be a bit faster but wont make a huge difference.
I had a look at the online brochures, it looks like you can install a 2.2GHz Pentium 4 in that model, which should make a noticeable difference in speed.
There is no way a Core Duo will work with the Chipset in the 2410. There is too much of a generation gap. The Pentium M came out after the P4, which I doubt would work either.
When a new CPU comes out, it is released alongside a new Chipset chip. The new Chipset supports new features of the CPU, along with power management changes, and the update to DDR2.
Basically, if you want to use a Core Duo CPU, you need a mainboard with something like an i965 chipset (Northbridge) that has support for the Core Duo architecture. You cannot upgrade the chipset on a mainboard.

  • Questions about different issues on a Satellite A30

Ok, to start, I don't know much about computers let alone laptops but my husband is "usually" good with them but right now we are having major problems.
I have a Satellite A30 (not sure if it's a pro as it doesn't mention it in the manual and Stephen is about to have a heart attack right now and isn't on the laptop so can't check the BIOS).
Anyway. Problems started quite some time ago, in fact not long after the warranty ran out. I bought it second hand and I loved it when I got it.
    Ok
Problem 1. - Overheating, we finally solved that by hoovering it out every now and then, problem solved.
Problem 2. - USB 2.0. Some things work some don't. My Nikon camera won't work via USB but my Lumix does. My mobile struggles. Just bought a card reader, worked on Stephen's laptop but not the A30. Bluetooth dongle doesn't work. All these items used to work.
Problem 3. - I can set my processor speed to either 1.6GHz or 3.06GHz. Overheats really easily on 3.06 and tends to slow down and seems to be faster on 1.6GHz and doesn't overheat on 1.6 so end up keeping it on that. Pain though. Even with extra under laptop fan cooler base.
Problem 4. - Not that I'm an expert but I think my power supply is gone. I always have my laptop plugged in about 90% of the time. I can put the laptop on and it will use the AC Adaptor for a while then goes on to Battery Power. If the AC Adaptor was in that was what it used, not the battery. Then when the battery gets to the end of it's power it just goes and I have to wait until it charges again before I can turn it back on. I find that really annoying.
Problem 5. - As from 2 days ago it has went totally and utterly kaput. Won't even log on. It goes as far as Windows XP booting up then an error message saying something about a missing .DLL file. Stephen said he sorted that but hasn't resolved the problem. We decided it was a hard drive problem so bought an external case for it and Stephen after 2 whole days managed to upload everything from the HDD to his laptop. It was a 40gig HDD. Some of the files were warped and had to be deleted so thought that was the problem so went out to buy a new one but went for a 120gig. Stephen formatted that on his laptop then went to transfer it to my A30 but same problems. Now I am wondering if 120Gig is too much. At the mo Stephen is taking out his HDD to put in mine and vice versa. His laptop is recognising it as a 120GHz but according to him my BIOS is not very clear and doesn't tell you anything. As I said I know nothing about computers. I'm really clutching at straws here. Stephen has been brought up on computers but is more used to desktops and we decided to sell our laptops and buy a high spec up to date desktop but I doubt I'd get much money now for my A30 if it doesn't work.
Any ideas would be sooooo helpful to get it rolling again.
Sorry for this thread to be so long but although Stephen won't admit to it, he really needs help and I can try and give any info you need to help us out.
BTW I read in my manual that it can take up to 80Gig HDD but larger ones in the future so we thought it would be fine with 120 by now since they are available if that is any help to you.

    Hi there,
do you have still warranty on that machine? If yes then bring it TOMORROW to an authorized service partner.
Why? The problem is that this machine has an Pentium 4 which really gets hot and if the cooling system is clobbed with dust, then the cooling paste which transfers the heat between cpu and cooling module gets dry and cannot transfer the heat accurately to the copper cooling module.
I would suggest you to go to an technician and advise him to exchange the cooling paste, it will really raise your system stability.
    Believe me. :)
The other thing with USB is: sometimes there is no enough power in the system and I assume that the problem lies on the AC-adapter. Purchase an new AC-adapter and you probably wont have problems with stability, USB and some other things anymore. I cannot tell it for sure, but I solved a problem with a Satellite 2430 which I had and which is quite the same model like yours, it has just some other colors but the model is the same.
I had that heat problem and I solved it by exchanging the cooling paste, but then the machine was not in warranty anymore and I am a little bit familiar with computers.
I had problems with my AC too, but my error was another because it mades some noise and after a while it stops working. At this time the system did not worked properly and after exchanging the AC everything was fine again.
Regarding the HDD: I cannot tell you something about since I am using just a 60GB drive. You will probably find it our on your own or a experienced user here in the forum could maybe help you.
I wish you good luck with your machine and a nice weekend

  • How can i access the hard drive in a satellite A30?

I have just bought a new hard drive and have been startled by the lack of information on the internet with help to access the hard drive. Please help. I have the satellite a30-203. Thanks, Daniel Short

    Hi daniel,
turn your A30 upside down. Then you need to remove one screw in order to remove your optical drive. After this you will see the HDD. Remove 4 screws that secure your HDD from the computer. Then pull back the hdd using the back brackets in the same way like you pull out your optical device.
    Hope this will help.

  • Maximum size of an .air package

    hi forum,
are there any limitations / recomendations for a maximum size
    of an .air package?
i'm currently developing on an air application which will be
distributed via cd/dvd. the app will have access to an fixed amount
of image data (about 1,5 gb), i'm not shure whether its better to
keep the data outside of the .air app installer an write an
postroutinie which autmatically copies the data from cd to
harddisk, or simply include the whole data whithin the .air file?
last version would save a lot coding but i don't know if ther
are limitations in the size of an .air packege

experienced any file size issues on the Mac.
Does anyone have any info on how to write a post-routine
which automatically copies the data from cd to hard-disk?
    David
    hi david,
thanx for your reply. think we have the same problem. here
are my ideas to resolve this problem:
    1) writing a post-routine:
as far as i know there is no standard post-routine function
implemented in air. so we have to fake it. maybe this way:
    - create a prefereces.dat where you store all the application
    preferences (serialized data) in
    - create a "firstRun"-flag inside this file with the value of
    "false"
    - in the application init() method check this value
    - if set to "true" - run the application
    - if set to "false" call a "copyContent()" method
    - this method should prompt for a "toc.xml" (open a file
dialog) which is stored on the cd
    - this toc.xml should keep all infos which content should be
    copied
    - now the user has to manualy go to the cd-drive an select
the file. (you shoud check the file schema, whether its "your"
    provided file)
    - for later use- save the native path of the toc.xml in the
    flag "toc-path" inside the preferences.dat.
    - now copy all files (asynchronus) listed in the toc.xml
(excluding the files in the "local-toc.xml", see below)
    - for "aborting proccess issues" you should also write a
local empty "local-toc.xml" to the users hdd
    - for each copied file you should write an the associate
entry from the cd's toc.xml to this local-toc.xml
    - this is important because if for some reasons the whole
process fails (by user or system), we do not have to copy the whole
    stuff again
    - if all files ar copied correctly, set the firstRun flag to
    "false" - run the application
    - if not, exit the application
    - next time the app starts, it looks for the firtsRun flag
    again.
    - if its still set to "true" (cause the copy process wasnt
successfull first time), the app matches the local-toc.xml with the
toc.xml from the cd (read the path from the toc-path flag first, if
not valid - do a new file dialog prompt)
    - now the "rest" of the content will be copieed
    - this procces loops till everything is well copied :+)
    2.) write a "real" installer
    - write a real installer with an installer build tool e.g.
    NSIS
    3.) hack air
    - try the new air wrapper tool
    "shu-player"
    - it wraps the air package in a single .exe
    - this a tool like mdm zinc for flash
    4.) hope
    - .... that adobe provides post-routines in the next release
    of air :+)
well, hope this helps - this are just ideas which havent been
    realized.
i'll keep you to date whether one solution works ...

  • MS6183 Max Size HDD

I have a Tiny PC with a MS6183 motherboard and BIOS A618301 V1.3, I am in the process of upgrading and adding a second HDD. What is the maximum size drive that other people have managed to install?
    40Gb or 80Gb?
    Many Thanks,
    David

    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/service/forum/index.php?threadid=4048&boardid=11
only thread i could find here
yours appears to have normal bios
    1.7 talks about 40 gb
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/bios/bos/spt_bos_detail.php?UID=119%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20&NAME=MS-6183
if it does not see the 40 gb you can limit it by jumper to 32gb and will not have wasted to much
if not intending to boot to it the 80 gb will work just set none on ide and windows will find it,but you will not be able to boot to it

  • Whats the largest hard drive the Satellite A30 supports

Satellite A30-514 P4 2.8GHz/WXP HE/512MB/30GB/15TFT/DVD-CDRW . I have the latest and only bios update i can see under downloads for this machine.I have a 30gb disk.I am looking at either a 80gb or 100gb model.Does this model support these sizes. Also some of these new hitachi drives have one ata cable that supplys both data and power.Does anybody know if this laptop supports this connection or is it two cables. As i have not had a look yet.Any advice on what type of drive to use will be much appreciated.

    Hi Mike,
I have an 80Gb hard drive in my A30 at the moment. You will need a drive with similar physical dimensions as your existing drive. Cables are not an issue since the hard drive on the A30 is connected directly to a connector underneath the optical drive (this must be removed first to access the hard drive.
A suitable drive would be the MK8025GAS but you could also take the option of using a drive with a higher rotation speed. The original drive is 4200rpm and I am currently using a 5400rpm version in my A30. There is a little bit of extra heat produced but this is only really noticeable during heavy disk activity (virus scan, defragment, backup, etc.).

  • Satellite A30: Question about new Hard Drive

The hard drive on the above computer has failed. When formating the system hangs at 70%. When running a utility to recover the hard drive again it fails at 70%.
I am now looking at replacing the hard drive and would like to know can any 2.5" hard drive (speed/make/size) be used (non Sata).
I would have assumed it would not be a problem but there is no way of changing the settings in the Bios, does the Bios auto detect the drive when fitted?.
When fitting the hard drive can it be fitted through the access panel on the rear of the laptop or does the whole back need to be removed?
    Thanks,
    Keith.

    Hi Keith,
The hard drive on the satellite A30 is located underneath the optical drive which must be removed from its slot first. To do this just undo one screw (F5 I think) underneath the notebook and the optical drive will then be free to slide forwards.
The hard drive will then be visible secured in place by four screws (2 on each side). Remove the screws and then pull the hard drive towards the front of the notebook to disconnect it from the connector.
You will need to transfer the mounting brackets to the new hard drive which is then inserted by reversing the above procedure.
The BIOS will automatically recognise the new drive.
If you choose a drive with a higher rotaional speed than the normal 4200RPM be careful of the extra heat that will be generated. I use a 5400RPM drive in my A30 and it does tend to warm up quite nicely when the drive is being used heavily.
