Satellite A300-21H - What the hidden partition means?

Hi,
I have a Satellite A300-21H and using MS vista but will be getting dual boot ubuntu soon.
When i look up my disk size i see C drive is 148GB and then there is an E drive also at 147GB.
The E drive is ntfs ( contains a folder called HDD recovery and text file ) - i assumed this was the recovery disk but it seems rather huge!.
Then i looked into the manula to see the recover should only be 1.5GB and there is a hidden 1.5GB drive on the disk also.
My question is what is the E drive, can i merge it with the C drive? and can i wipe it and still use the 1.5 GB to recover things? and The two back up DVD's i made what are they for?
Thanks in advance:
Patrick

Hi buddy
The notebook contains 3 partitions;
One partition contains the Vista OS
The second partition contains the HDD recovery folder. This HDD recovery folder is needed for HDD recovery procedure. You can recover the notebook without using the disk. You can boot from the HDD and can start the HDD recovery process.
But its strongly recommended to create a recovery disk! This could be helpful if something will go wrong with the preinstalled OS and the HDD recovery.
Last partition (the hidden one) contains the Vista backup files called WinRE.
This backup files are needed in order to repair the OS in critical situations
Its no recommended to remove, delete or merge this partition!

  • How to partition Satellite A300-21H with Vista?

    Hello,
I have a Toshiba Satellite A300-21H with Vista and want to dual boot it with ubuntu linux. At the moment there are three partitions, 1.5GB vista recovery, 150gb C and 150gb E ( with HDD recovery inside it ). For my ubuntu i would like partitions / and /home ( around 150gb ). Should i delete the E partition? I have my recovery DVD's made..
Whats the best approach, I think linux only allows 4 partition's.

    Hello
Of course you can delete the partition E because you have created the recovery disk.
Very good job buddy because sometimes the people forget it to burn. :(
Now you can install the factory settings every time that you want.
On Vista you can change the partition size, delete and create it. This is possible by the new Disk Management Utility:

  • How to make a *full* backup (including the hidden partition), free solution prefered =) [T400]

    Hi,
I'm planning on messing with my system a little (re-partition, install linux) and I want a full-proof recovery plan. This should work in case I *completely* mess up my HD (bad boot records, destroyed partitions, etc.)
I have an external hard drive with plenty of free space. How would I make a completely backup; something that would restore everything (including the hidden partition) to its current state?
Is there any way to do this using free/opensource?
Keep in mind that if there's a linux app that can do this, I can just boot up using a live CD and run the app from there.
    Thanks in advance.

Vista or XP? What is/was the partition layout? IIRC, w/XP the 2nd partition is the service partition (hd0,1) and with Vista it is the first (hd0,0).  I don't know if that is always the case, so how is your drive layed out?
ISTR that with XP the service partition is "hidded' by using an ID of 12 (or something) even though it is a FAT32 partition.  Grub might be unhappy with the ID.  Changing it to "C" might let it boot. That's just a WAG.  My recollection is that the ID only affected where I could install the grub files, not what I could boot.
I've got some old notes here somewhere:  www.beezmo.com/ThinkPadT61.htm maybe in "partitioning" or Windows XP.
**** grrr.  the insert link thingy isn't working.  the link above is literally correct, but the forum is inserting some invisible characters ****
I don't know clonezillla.  Will it let you restore only one of the partitions?  If so, do a restore to factory (with the recovery media you made immediately on receiving the laptop) and then restore only the Vista or XP partition from clonezilla.
    HTH,
    Z.

  • How to delete the hidden partition (about 35 GB) on my H430 HDD?

    Hello dear sirs/madams
I want to delete the hidden partition in my H430 desktop. It came with DOS. I am unable to use OneKey Recovery after the reseller installed Windows 7 Ultimate x32. And it is showing the hard disk capacity is 465 GB in my 500 GB HDD. I googled and found that it has a hidden partition. I am unable to delete it using diskpart because it doesn't show the partition. Here's the screenshot of diskpart.
    Link to image
Please tell me if I can still use OneKey Recovery.
Please guide me. I am using Windows 8 Pro x64.

  • Where to get 2nd hand mobo for Satellite A300-21H

Hopefully someone will be able to help.
Where could I purchase a motherboard 2nd hand if possible for my wifes A300 21H.
The system is only 18 months old very annoying it's lasted such a short time.
I have had the system checked and they think it's the mobo.
I was quoted 300+ to repair the laptop is not worth paying that amount so thought I would have a go at repairing it myself.

    Thats right.
New motherboards are very expensive an in most cases its not worth to purchase new mobo.
I recommend checking some internet auctions pages (ebay, etc) to get a 2nd hand motherboard.
Maybe you could get a 2nd hand A300 unit where the motherboard does not malfunction

  • Possible to repair the hidden partition on T61p?

    Hi,
it seems that my hidden partition has been damaged (not physically). Strange things happen when proceeding to a restore, mainly some software i had when i received the thinkpad isn't present after the "factory" restore....
Restoring with the cds i created doesn't fix it.
Is there a way to repair, or anyway to get the hidden partition in exactly the same "shape" it was when I bought the laptop at the retailer (less than 2 weeks ago)?
    thank you
    T61p 6460-D8G, Vista (downgrade to XP soon...), T9300, Quadro FX570M, 15,4' WUXGA...

i'm not sure that i've listed everything, but at least:
    - Office trial, as you mentioned it (didn't even have time to use it...Do you know where i can download it? Lenovo or Microsoft?)
    - Rescue and recovery at least, maybe other TV utilities, but i didn't take time to check everything yet....
The thing is, i would like to repair the hidden partition, get it in "brand new" status, create recovery CDs, so that I have the system as it came, sealed, from the retailer + the recovery set, all of that with Vista. I would preciously ("my preciousssss"  :-)  ) keep that in a box.
After that, i will put in the laptop a new hard disk drive I'm about to buy (7200rpm 320Go 2.5 SATA...), and install XP on it (hopefully from the Lenovo downgrade kit that came with my thinkpad)

  • Deleting the Hidden Partition

HI, I'm going to rebuild my system with Windows Vista, as it was shipped with XP.
In doing so, I was considering deleting the hidden partition.  If I delete this, will I only be deleting the option to restore to the factory defaults?  I have made recovery DVD's so if this is the case, I should be fine.  Will I still have the option to hit the thinkvantage button on boot up and have some of the other tools that are there, such as diagnostics, or do I loose that as well.
    Thanks
    David

I deleted my hidden partition also after making recovery discs.   You can use the discs to restore everything including the hidden partition if necessary.

  • Update the hidden partition on my T61 to SP1 ?

hi, is it possible to update the hidden partition to sp1? or at least make it update automatically when doing a factory restore ? thanks!

No, its not possible to update the factory restore image on the disk.
You can use System Update to get anything new you need in terms of drivers etc after a factory restore.
    Cheers,
    Bill

    Hello
Im wondering that you want to upgrade to 8GB RAM... Normally 3 or 4GB should be more as enough for all applicaions at the moment.
Anyway, as Jayjay said its not possible to upgrade to 8GB. A friend of me has a Satellite A300 and the user manual says that it can upgrade to 4GB or 2GB (depending on the chipset). So if you have a PM965/GM965/RS690M chipset you can upgrade it to 4GB. Otherwise you can only use up to 2GB.
I have upgraded my Toshiba notebook with Kingston RAM. This is high quality RAM and has a good compatibility. I never had problems with such modules.
    Check this!!
    Bye

  • Restoring a Blank HD to factory defaults (including the hidden partition) [T400, Vista x64]

    Hi,
    Background info:
I'm installing linux, and instead of asking about everything at once, I'm separating my problems into multiple questions.
I plan to remove all partitions, make new ones (adding an extra one for linux) and then use the recover stuff to bring back windows
The main question (this one), is:
If I completely clear the hard drive of all partitions, and then re partition to include one extra linux (ext3) partition, can I use the "Product Recovery CDs" (the 14 cds that I have burnt using the thinkvantage software) to restore the computer to the exact factory default state? i.e., will it:
    1) Completely restore vista
    2) Restore the hidden recovery partition (I understand the CDs also act as a recovery partition, but there's 14 of them... I don't know how well I can maintain that many CDs, so I'd rather have another copy on the HD)
    3) Not screw up the thinkvantage "stuff" (this is my first lenovo, so I'm not sure, but I want to make sure the support software doesn't go nuts once it notices there's an extra partition, etc.)
    Thanks in advance.
