Satellite A300D-1GN - Slow Vista booting

Hi...
I bought laptop 2 days ago Satellite A300D -1gn.
I have pre-installed Vista Home and I have a problem with booting at startup to be precious. It is too long (about 2-3 min).
My friend has weaker Toshiba than mine and he also has a Vista home but his pc is much faster.
What is problem with my laptop? Please help me.....

Hi guys
Horwath has posted already a link to the thread which should help you.
The point is that the Toshiba notebooks support many different notebook features and these features must be controlled by different software.
These processes are running in the Vista background and affect the booting procedure.
If you want you can disable several (not needed) processes in the msconfig.
Furthermore a installed Antivirus applications like Norton Ativirus can slow down the boot procedure dramatically. I had Norton installed on my system and replaced it!
Now Im using the free tool called Antivir. In my opinion its much better and doesnt waste the hardware recourses!!!

  • Satellite A300D - Upgrading from Vista - "Setup.exe has stopped working"

    Hello,
I am using Satellite A300D with Vista and I have been trying to upgrade to Windows 7 using the Toshiba Upgrader.
After choosing the language and proceeding with other steps, it asks me to uninstall a bunch of programs. Some are uninstalled just fine but when it comes four other programs it says "Setup.exe has stopped working" and it does not uninstall.
I have tried uninstalling them manually but I got the same message.
    These programs are;
    Atheros Driver Installation Program
    Toshiba Hardware Setup
    Toshiba Supervisor Password
    Realtek High Definiton Audio Driver
As a result I cannot proceed with the upgrade.
Anyone know what the issue might be?
    thanks in advance,
    Can - TR

I am having the exact same problem. I have the toshiba satellite 350D. I am only stuck at the atheros driver installation program. As soon as it's supposed to be uninstalled I receive the " setup.exe. has stopped working" I tried uninstalling manually as well and get the same message.
I think the only fix would be to reinstall vista and then try upgrading to windows 7 again. I would like to stay away from reformatting though.
I would love an answer to this question as well!! (frustrating)

  • Re: Satellite A300D-15B - slow start up

    Hi,
    1) I recently bought the current laptop and it takes a really long time to start up and be able to work with. After that it works perfectly fine. Actualy the time it needs to start up is exactly 3 minutes. Any recommendations? I really need help.
    2) Is there any chance that I can install a copy of windows XP on this machine?
    Thanks in advance
    Nicos

    Hello Nicos
Yesterday I have made start up test with my brand new Satellite A300-1IA (PSAGCE). The result is very interesting. I have checked the time from pressing power button to the point where all stuff are load and desktop ready for use.
So there is the whole story:
I have installed factory image to get Factory settings again. When the configuration was finished notebook needs 2 minutes and 40 seconds for start.
So the next step was update check. Microsoft offers 22 updates and 108 MB data that can be installed. Ok I have installed all this and restarted notebook several times. After update installation notebook needs 3 minutes and 12 seconds for boot up.
What a difference. What you think?
The last step was my own Vista configuration:
-removing all useless software from the system
-removing preinstalled antivir application and installation of Avira Antivir software (for me definitely the best one because it doesnt need so many resources)
-disabling start up for all processes that I dont need (MSCONFIG)
-disabling all hardware components I dont need in device manager (modem, multicard reader, PCMCIA slot, firewire)
After doing all this Satellite A300-1IA needs for start up 1 minute and 15 seconds only.
I think it is good time for Vista. What do you think about this start up time?
BTW: my brother has NOD32 but I dont like it.

  • My Satellite A300D (PSAK8E) won't boot

Hello, I have a weird problem with my laptop for quite some time and it only gets worse as time passes.
Every once in a while the laptop would not boot (black screen no bios splash screen etc.) and I had to reset it a few times for it to boot. Once it boot it would run for days with no problems. The problem was fixed 100% for a couple of weeks with the latest bios update.
After that it returned to the previous state and it will boot almost never. I've tried hard reset different ram modules, different ram sticks, uninstalled dvd, hard drive, with battery and AC, AC only, battery only.So far nothing seems to help.
    Any suggestions pls?

It is always problematic to discuss about issues that happen sporadically. To be honest all you have done is right and unfortunately notebook users cannot do more than that.
In my opinion it must be checked with special diagnostic tools and it can be done in service only.
For me is confusing that from time to time notebook doesnt even show splash screen. There must be some problem on lowest hardware level. BIOS? Connections? We can just speculate about that.
Try to contact service, explain the situation and ask what the problem can be.

  • Re: Satellite C855-1GN very slow performance - booting procedure takes 15min

My sister bought a Satellite C855-1GN installed with Win7 64-bit last December (typical - 4 days out of guarantee now) and for sometime has found it getting slower and slower.
She asked me to take a look at it for her, and she is quite right, this laptop is appalling unresponsive for even the most basic of tasks like opening Windows Explorer, which takes over a minute to open.
It's a similar story for pretty much any button press on this machine, sometimes longer depending on what has been clicked. Even getting the thing booted up from power button press to desktop being visible (let alone usable) takes a staggering 15 minutes plus.
Entering text such the password for user to login to Windows, or a URL in any browser (IE and chrome installed by default) results in the spinning circle equivalent to an egg timer for at least 60 seconds before anything happens, as does pretty much any button click. For example, Windows start button or right click on anything whatsoever.
Initially I suspected some kind of malware / too much rubbish installed. Ran full scans, no issues. Disabled / uninstalled all of the bloatware I could find, still no difference.
Shut down all power saving features, still appallingly slow.
Windows Experience / Task Manager / resmon all report nothing out of the ordinary nor anything eating resources. Out of desperation, reset to Out Of Box Experience condition using the hidden recovery partition... which took over 24 hours to complete, and that's not an exaggeration.
I went to bed, then to work for the day, and it still hadn't finished until I'd been home for a couple of hours.
This machine now has a completely fresh (albeit Toshiba specific) Win7 install, and runs just as horrifically slowly. I'm still waiting for desktop, 17 minutes after powering it on before typing this. It's had several reboots, and is not still installing anything.
6GB of RAM is more than ample. Whilst not a P3, 5 or 7, there is no way that an Intel B950 dual core processor running at an admittedly not top class 2.10GHz can be this slow (especially as it wasn't until a few months ago), I've had awful Celerons in my time which have been infinitely faster than this.
Has anyone else had similarly pathetic performance from this model? If so, we're any of you able to resolve it? Or should we just bin this paperweight?

    Hi
In the past we have discussed many times about similar issues and some people were not satisfied about performance of brand new notebooks preinstalled with original recovery image.
As small example you can check this thread. Generally speaking there is described what you should do with this machine. You must, I like to use word optimize, preinstalled operating system. It will definitely run better and faster.
Other way there can also be problem with HDD. If your sister likes this machine I recommend you a small investment in new hardware. Exchange HDD with SSD. SSDs are not so expensive anymore so you can buy one, I would say, with 250GB and I think it is enough free space for their work.
You cannot imagine how fast they are. I use one on my old P500. Notebook starts in 40 seconds only.
Im pretty sure with new SSD and optimized original Win7 that you got with this notebook your sister will have good and pretty fast machine.

  • Satellite A300D with Vista 64-bit - Drivers for Conexant High Definition

    Hi,
I have Satalite A300D-15B AMB 64-bit notebook with Vista 64-bit installed. After I have installed Vista, it automatically took the audio drivers for sound card, but Dolby didn't work.
I tried to install the drivers from toshiba, it fails.
Can someone guide me how to install the Vista 64-bit drivers for Conexant High Definition Audio please......
    regards,
    Ganesh

    Hello Ganesh
Sorry but this notebook model is not supported for Vista 64-bit and I don't know what driver installation are you writing about.
What you can try is to download and install THIS driver.
This is driver for Satellite A300 but this notebook has the same sound card as your Satellite A300D - Conexant CX20561.
    Please post the results.

  • Satellite Pro P105 - Laggy videos and slow Vista

Lately my PC is bein very laggy whenever I watch a video and sometimes particularly slow switching from a window to another.
I have got a NFORCE GE 7900, 2mb ram and T7200 intel core2 DUO, I ran antivirus and anti spyware.
Everything seems fine but I can't possibly watch a video (I tried both Windows video player and DVX) and sometime even other applications are getting slower and slower.
Everything was working fine untill 4 days ago.

Maybe there are too many background processes. Try to stop all useless processes. When everything was OK at the beginning check all installed stuff. I believe some added application make HDD busy and result is slow Vista.

  • Memory upgrade on Satellite A300D-15B

    Hi all,
I am having upgrading the ram on my laptop from 4gb to 8gb. First I will post the full details of my laptop then explain the problem.
    (Original Configuration)
    Satellite A300D-15B
    Model : PSAKCE
    Bios Ver: 3.30
AMD Turion X2 Ultra Dual-Core Mobile Processor ZM-86 (Upgraded from ZM-80)
Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit
    4096 MB (2048 +2048) PC2-6400 DDR RAM (800MHZ)
Right then, I installed Windows 7 32bit on it ages ago and upgraded the CPU and have never had any issues as i work with computers.
I did some checking and found out my Motherboard supports uo to 8gb of ram and decided to buy two 4gb ram modules. I made sure I got the correct ram for my laptop.
I upgraded the ram and it recognised it without any issue and even stated that 8gb of ram was installed under 'System'in contol panel and in the bios. As it was a 32bit OS it only utilised 3gb of the ram. I then decided to upgrade my OS to Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit and thats when the fun began.
Basically my laptop will not boot if I have more than 4gb of ram installed (In any configuration) and get a BSOD. I have had a few different Stop Error codes but I cant seem to find a solution. Also there arent any/many options to change in the bios so Im stumped.
I have tested the ram modules with Memtest several times without error and have also tried them in different laptops without issue. I know my laptop suppors the 8gb as I had no issues running the 32bit OS.
All my drivers and other software are to date and work fine and have installed all windows updates to date.
Has anyone else had this issue and is there a patch/fix available?
Any help, ideas or suggestions are welcome and hopefully I can sort this problem out. Many thanks in advance.
    Melchius

    Hi there,
The Ram I bought is the correct to the letter and is as follows:
    Komputerbay DDR2 PC2-6400 @ 800Mhz - 2 x4gb modules.
It has exactly the same Cas latency and timing settings aswell.
You mentioned that it booted fine in 32bit as it didnt address the full 8gb but now on the 64bit OS I have 1 x 4gb module installed and it is recognised without any issues,.
If the ram wasnt compatible in any way then I should be getting some errors or something to indicate a problem.
It also wouldnt boot/run properly with just 1 of the 4gb modules installed on either 32/64bit OS's, which isnt the case at all. I am certain that the ram itself isnt the issue.
I also tried installing 1 x 2gb and 1 x 4gb module for a total of 6gb and I managed to get windows to load (once) but it then stopped responding. Im not very keen on spending loads of money on another 8gb of ram from Kingston or Crucial if the same thing is going to happen, which I fully expect it will.
Thanks for the suggestions though, any other ideas?
    Melchius
Also worth mentioning that the ram that came with the laptop wasnt even Toshiba brand, it is Samsung ram so maybe they should make a list of all the compatible makes for their laptops or maybe not lock their bios's to the point that the end user is so limited.

  • Fan is working so fast on Satellite A300D

    Hi everybody!
My machine is Satellite A300D 17-F with Vista!
For a long time it had a problem which is about HDD because of the bad sectors. I guess I solved it with a program named maxtor blast4. I have set up it to xp sp3 and it became more fast.
But fan! Fan is working so fast :) I try power saver driver but it was not set up.
    What can I do??

If you want to slow down fun speed change cooling method option to min level.
This option you can find in Toshiba power saver tool.

    Cheers Avo

    Hi Avo,
If you cant find Windows 7 driver at the moment you should try the Vista driver. I have also Satellite A300D and Im still using the Vista driver for Chicony webcam it works really well.
You can download the driver here:

  • Satellite A300D-15B - Upgrade from Windows 7 32bit to 64bit?

I've added an extra 4GB of memory to my Satellite A300D-15B (PSAKCE). When I try to run the Windows 7 64bit upgrade it fails with a blue screen.
Is it possible to upgrade this model to 64 bit Windows 7?

    Hi ronchennells,
Theoretically it should be possible to upgrade to Windows 7 64bit You can do/install everything what you want but the important point is drivers
On the official Toshiba website there are no Windows 7 64bit drivers but you can try the Vista 64bit drivers. Normally they are compatible
Generally speaking its not necessary to upgrade to 4GB RAM or more for using Windows 7 64bit. You can also use the 64bit version with 2GB only.
What happens if you start the upgrade with original memory module only?

  • Long Windows Vista Boot Time

Just installed Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 via Boot Camp, all went well with the installation but whenever I boot into Windows it sits at a screen with a black background and a blinking white line at the top left corner. It lasts about a minute and then boots into Windows. Anyone know why it does this?

Blame it on EFI and having to load emulated BIOS and pretend it is on Master Boot Record drive.
I wanted to see what a PC boot process was like, and it varied by motherboard and BIOS (and even what chipset drivers, how many addresses for disk drives and attached devices).
For me the only fix - wish I hadn't applied the one EFI firmware, all it did was add 30 seconds to Windows (improves compatibility for booting Windows on Macs was all it said) was to assemble a comparable PC hardware. About 45 seconds though. Still slower than booting OS X is.

  • Few questions about Satellite A300D-14P functionality

I have model Satellite A300D-14P for one month. Warranty 2 yrs. I have few questions, and asking for help, and suggestions what I should do?
*My camera quality * is VERY poor, Only with very much light on, I can get generally ok picture quality. Indoor, beside turned on both options, night mode or backlight compensation I hardly can see my face, very dark and poor quality. Second problem is blue led light, it is annoying because half of picture is always blue, somehow that light taking half picture which is always blue:((( I used notebook model from L300 series ( cheaper than mine) with same camera and that blue light, it is working perfectly :(
*Battery life and start up Vista OS*? ??In power save mode hardly 1.5h ??? Just surfing and nothing else....I asked Toshiba support here in Serbia about that and they told me that it is normal, and measuring of battery life (2, ...h) by specifications, is when my display is off and computer don't do anything ??? They also told me that normal start up time for Vista OS is around 1.45min maybe more???
If I install win XP is it possible to get battery life longer?
Do I need to go in Toshiba service or what?
Thank you very much and sorry if I am boring :))))
    Nikola

    Hay Nikola
You are not boring at all and welcome on this forum.
    I don't know where to start. ;).
I have Satellite A300-1LI in front of me and I use it about a month now. Start-up time is very interesting theme and with right configuration you can optimise it and make it much shorter as with factory setting. Please read one very interesting thread about it under http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=134947
Do the same with your Satellite and I hope you will be satisfied.
Battery running time? I must say that information about two hours is realistic and I can confirm it. The same on my Satellite. But to be honest for mobile computing it is OK. I have changed several notebooks and just business notebook Tecra has had linger battery running time. What you can do is to check Toshiba support site and pick up info about more powerful battery. I am not sure but you can use Battery Pack (Li-Ion, 9 Cell, 6000mAh).
About cam I cannot say much. On my Satellite it works OK and I am satisfied. OK the quality is not the same like on good external webcams but for integrated cam it is OK.
If you are not satisfied try to talk with nearest service or try to compare it with some other Satellite by your local dealer.
So Nikola, if you have more questions please post again.

  • Very slow to boot, even on an external drive

A friend's 15" MacBook Pro, quad core i7,(older, not sure of the exact model) very slow to boot, and boots with the progress bar, then when you try to log in, it goes back to the login page. Often it will not start. Starts after resetting SMC.  Reset PRAM. Booted to the recovery disk, ran repair disk on drive, no errors, tried to run repair on the volume and the MBP shut down. Tried booting to an external drive and it boots to an empty desktop with a finder window like an extended desktop.Tried AHT, only the usual battery sensor error, 4SNS/1/40000000  TB3T-128.000. ran extended test, same thing, only the one error.
So, how to back up this MB Pro before I try an erase and install. (short of removing the drive) It would seem to be a hardware error, but always want to try an erase and install. Any ideas or troubleshooting suggestions?

Mike -- thanks for your input. I guess Windows is just a worrisome thing for us Mac guys. Part of what always gets me is unknown code that goes into Windows. I did a Google the other day to see if I could get a feel for the "roots" of the upcoming Vista.
Who knows what Vista is really based on -- a modification of NT that was in part based on DOS and VMS? From my limited experience, I am not sure there is enough shelf space to hold the manuals to run VMS successfully. Of course, why worry; Boot Camp and other things will change before Vista gets here.
The bottom line is that I will use all the Windows security fixes.
