Satellite A40 - broken CD-ROM drive, bootable options

Hi,
my CD ROM drive is broken and I need to use the Windows XP CD to update some corrupted files. Having bought an external CD ROM drive I have now found it impossible to boot from this, because it appears to not be supported by the BIOS options. Does anyone have any suggestions how I can use the CD to repair the corrupted files??
Many thanks
HombreJoven

Reading this other reply below, I don't think that the brand of the external drive matters. From what I can glean I need to update the BIOS to accept USB HDD (CDROM) or buy a new CDROM internal drive and get it fitted...

No Oleg, its not possible
You can only boot up from the USB FDD, HDD, CD/DVD drive and LAN

  • Old Toshiba Satellite with broken CD-Rom now needs a new hard drive to reinstall OS and drivers

I have a very old Toshiba laptop with an unworking Cd/DVD drive. Recently the internal HDD crashed and is unrepairable due to a broken hardware issue. I purchased a new Internal HDD and installed it then attempted to reinstall from the recovery disk using an external DVD drive. This did not work as the computer forces me to utilize the onboard CD/DVD drive. Besides the original HDD crashing after 5 years of use this is still a pretty good laptop which is why I would like to find a way to fix it. If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate it very much.
As an aside I do have a SATA USB cord and if it is possible I might be able to utilize it and the disk to install/recover the new drive and then install it this way however I don't know if this will work. Thanks.

The new Toshiba laptops will allow you to run the Recovery from the USB ports, with either a flash drive or an external DVD drive. Unfortunately, the old Toshibas don't have that option. Your best choice is to replace the broken DVD/CD drive. After that you should be able to run the Recovery and start again.

  • Satellite A100-049 - CD ROM drive no longer found

My satellite A100-049 no longer sees my CD rom drive, It won't auto play any discs, and when I double click a shortcut to a program that uses a disc it says 'no cd-rom drive found'.
I've tried updating the driver but I already have the most up to date one. It was fine yesterday, before I installed Norton 360- I don't know if that has anything to do with it. My operating system is vista home premium.
I really need help quickly as I'm going to university in under 3 weeks and the cd rom drive is vital to my course.

    Hi Michael
Its very strange that your CD/DVD drive does not work longer after the Norton 360 installation. For me it looks like the Norton 360 has modified some registry keys and therefore the drive malfunctions.
I would recommend removing the CD/DVD drive from the device manager.
Then restart the notebook. After new reboot the windows OS should recognize the new hardware (CD/DVD drive) and should install it again.
Then start the registry and remove the upper and lower filter values from this registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    then reboot and test again!
Good luck and cheers dude ;)

  • Satellite A660 DVD/CD-ROM drive does not detect discs

    Hi there,
I have a Toshiba Satellite A660 with a MAT****A BD-CMB UJ141ES DVD/CD-ROM drive. It is about 18 months old and recently I have noticed that it does not recognise any CDs/DVDs. It makes a couple of noises once inserted but then stops spinning and nothing happens or changes in My Computer view.
Please note there seems to be no apparent problems with the drive:
    - It is present in My Computer
    - The device is working properly in device manager
    Things I have already tried:
    - Run Microsoft FixIt and CD-ROM/DVD Troubleshooter - both said it could not recognise media
    - Deleted upper filter in the registry as per many suggestions (no lower filter present)
    - Updated driver
I don't know what else to do. Please help as this is frustrating for a relatively new notebook which never is moved from my desk (don't expect many damaged parts).
    Cheers

As I said: clean the laser lens
If you open the CD/DVD drive you will see the small laser lens.
Use cotton wool tip and alcohol

  • New i-pod broken cd rom drive- how can I import?

My friend has a brand new i-iPod, but his cd rom drive isn't working.
How can he import music? He has financial concerns, so buying a new drive/computer is not an option.
He wants to use my computer, which is fine but then won't his iPod be linked to my computer? Sorry I'm not real knowledgable about these things.
Can he put music onto his i-iPod from my i-iTunes, and then use his i-iPod to put it on his i-iTunes, so he can manage and edit?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Satellite P105 - DVD/CD ROM drive does not work

The DVD/CD ROM drive on my P105 does not work at all.  I've tried the registry fix for the upper/lower limit thing - didn't fix the problem.  The drive does have power, does spin a disk, but it is not recognized by the system.  It doesn't show up in the device manager at all.  I need to get this working and I'm hoping it doesn't need a new drive as this machine is out of warranty (of course!).  Thanks for any and all suggestions on hot to fix this problem.

    Can anyone help me?

  • Broken CD Rom drive and can't update

I have a Macbook Pro and I cannot update my computer. My biggest problem is that I cannot use my CD Rom drive to reload the old software. I need to know another way to get my computer updated so I can use my Itunes. What can I do?

    1) Yes, you can replace the CD/DVD drive
    2) Its not very tricky to remove the CD/DVD drive from the notebook. Its secured with one screw at the bottom of the unit. Remove the screw securing the optical drive module and use your hand to push the module and then you can slide the module from the bay
    3) You will have to buy an compatible CD/DVD drive. The compatible drive could be ordered from your local Toshiba ASP

  • External drive for broken CD rom drive on G3.

    I have a g3 also...but don't want to get rid of it. I bought the wireless g4. However , how do i purchase a CD rom/ external drive for a broken g3....??
Please advise what company would be the best.
    Thank you..

    macbear:
You really should start a new topic. However, both 2001 iMac 500 Mhz versions support Firewire. You could buy an external Firewire CD/DVD burner and use it. Try OWC.

  • Satellite M35x-s349 - DVD-ROM Drive not reading

    I have a Satellite M35x-s349. I got it around late 2004.
It had this problem for a few months and I had submitted to not being able to read or write cd's/dvd's because I couldn't find my recovery discs. When the whole comp crashed I renewed my efforts, found them, restored it with the help of an external HD case, backed up and restored my comp. It was working great. I burned cds and watched movies with no problems for a couple months.
Now it has stopped reading any kind of cd again. I put one in and the little disc flashes next to my cursor. I hear movement inside (both whirring and the eye moving) but after about 20 seconds it gives up and claims there is no disc in the drive. I don't want to have to do another system restore but I can't even read the Restore disc to reinstall the driver. Are there any thoughts on why this is happening if not any solutions? Any way to reinstall the driver online? I'm a mid-level comp user so I can understand most tech jargon you throw my way. I can usually solve my own problems but this one seems hopeless.
    Any help is much appreciated.
    -Tom

A friend of me has a Satellite M30x. As far as I know this is the same model as you have but for the European market.
His CD/DVD drive was faulty and had problems to read the disk. He bought a second hand drive from eBay and exchanged it by his self. Now it works again and exchanging the drive was pretty easy.

  • Satellite M30X: DVD/CD rom drive does not work

    Hi,
Hope someone can help. The above drive will not now recognise any inserted media. It whirrs for a while then stops. I have cleaned the lens and also run through the support and diagnostic tests and they cannot help me any further.
I have also reinstalled the driver but no joy.
Does this mean a new DVD/cd drive is required?
Is it removable from the laptop and easily replaced?
Where would i get the part - M****a DVD ROM UJ- 82OS ?
    How much would this cost?
Thanks to all for any suggestions???
    Jim

    Hi,
I had the same problem as you and I had to send mine for repair and they replaced it for me. My drive, same model as yours would not burn DVD's.
    Installing is quite easy:
I HOLD NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY DAMAGE DONE
    1. Turn the unit up-side down
    2. Remove every screw except the one securing the Hard-Drive, Memory Module and the one under the battery.
    3. Now get a Pin or a Straightened out Paper-Clip and push the Pin/Paper-Clip into the small hole of the DVD-Driveand slowly pull the drive out.
    4. Nearly there, Now you need to put your new DVD-Drive upside down because you have the unit is upside down as well.
    5. Once you have done that, you need to put all the screws back in place.
    6. DONE!
    Hope this helps

  • Satellite A40-SP151 - DL DVD-RW writer compatibility - ide#1 error

    Hi
Can anyone add to list of *compatible DVD writers for Satellite A40-SP151*
Googling the drives previously listed, they appeared to be just DVD-Roms/CDRW combo's.
    ie:
    Toshiba G8CC0000R810
    Hitachi G8CC00015810
    TEAC G8CC0001D810
    HITACHI G8CC0001K810
    Panasonic G8CC0001C810
    Toshiba SDR2412OAA
I'm trying to upgrade to a DL DVD-RW drive.
I can confirm Pioneer KD08 and Panasonic UJ-850 FWv1.10 are _not_ compatible, the latter I cannot find any firmware for (to try and swap master / slave settings)..(Dont want to mess with the Pioneer)
I think the TOSHIBA DVDRW/CDRW COMBO Part No. SD-R6112 is compatible if anyone can confirm this?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hello,
this problem can be solved by simple "upgrade" of Yours new drve (which is not compatible).
    Solution :
    http://www.motherboardpoint.com/t135374-internal-burner-not-detected-tosh-1805.html
that means opening new drive cover and some soldering (this can void new drives warranty ....)
You need jumpering pins 45 & 47 of new DVD drive connector
This worked for Satellite 1800 series, Satellite A10/A15 series notebooks- few drives were upgraded.
But "Making this modification requires not only soldering, but
EXTREMELY fine soldering. Most users will not be able to perform this
    on their own.." .
By my opinion is better to give some $$ for technician who ia able to do this soldering job and
not to search compatible drives, as I know ,is not very easy to find ...

  • Broken CD-rom in Toshiba satellite harman/kardom

    I have Toshiba satellite laptop
    but CD rom is broken,
So, I have External DVD rom(USB)
and I want boot from External DVD rom and install Windows 7
But When Press F12 , Dont have choice for external CD rom
    what can I do?

When asking a question on the Forum, please include the computer model with the question. You'll get a better answer that way. Depending on the computer, some will allow you to boot from an external USB DVD drive and some of the older computers won't. In your case, your computer does not give you the option to boot from the external USB drive. Best option is to get the CD-ROM drive replaced and try again with the Windows upgrade.
