Satellite A40 - What max HDD size is possible

This Satellite A40 has a 40GB 4200RPM drive.
Looking for 120GB and possibly 160GB.
This question is whether I can consider a higer RPM an/or seek time.
What would be the limitations?
Maurice Newsome

Hi
I presume the A40 supports an IDE HDD controller ATA-5.
In such case the 120GB would be the max die to the 28bit LBA
But in your case I would test firstly an 80GB or an 120GB HDD.

  • Need info about max HDD size available for Satellite Pro M30-813

    Hello,
    The following question is mainly to be addressed to authorized Toshiba support personnel. What exactly is the limitation of a maximum size of an internal HDD that I could use with my Satellite Pro M30-813?
    Recently, I have bought and installed seagate 160 GB SATA drive, onto which I have successfully installed WXP Pro and have been running it for quite a while with no problems. Recently, I have been copying large amount of data from an external hard drive to my new internal disk, and as the files were being copied as I noticed having about 50 GB free space left, I had experienced windows "delayed write failed" and a massive partition failure with no possibility to recover data. The system would no longer boot and the whole MBR was damaged. As the result, I have lost all data on my new disk.
    Although, I realize that Toshiba is not responsible for additional hardware that I use with my laptop and that is not officially supported by Toshiba, I am certain that as an end user of a Toshiba product I have the right to know about a max HDD size limitation information for my notebook model. Therefore, I request Toshiba technical support representative to give me a straight official answer to my question.
    Thank you in advance,

    Hi Andrew
    > The following question is mainly to be addressed to authorized Toshiba support personnel
    I think you are in the wrong area if you are looking for an answer from an authorized Toshiba support.
    This is a Toshiba user-to-user forum! You will meet here Toshiba notebook owner and enthusiasts who share knowledge and tries solve problems but nobody from Tosh :(
    I could provide my experience with the M30 Satellite and the HDD upgrade possibilities.
    In my knowledge the Sat M30 supports a 40GB, 60GB and 80GB HDD for sure.
    In my opinion you could use the 100GB HDD but bigger HDDs will not run and functions correctly.
    So switch to a lower HDD size and enjoy the notebook!
    Ive goggled a little bit and found compatible HDD and the part numbers
    HITACHI GBC000Z810 -> 80GB
    HITACHI GBC00014810 -> 80GB
    TOSHIBA HDD2188B -> 80GB
    HITACHI G8C0000Z610 -> 60GB
    HITACHI G8BC00013610 -> 60GB
    TOSHIBA HDD2183 -> 60GB
    TOSHIBA HDD2184 -> 60GB
    I hope this could help you a little bit!
    Best regards

    bios has been flashed to most recent version, even though its only from 1998...
    thanks for any help!
    oh and i dont have any hdds lying around to simply test the boards capabilities :(

    thanks, i didnt really know what those extra jumpers on HDDs were for.
    i borrowed a 40gb HDD off a friend and did as you said, the bios then auto-detected it as being about 33000MB in size.. would this be the maximum HDD size?
    you did mention that by its age, the max HDD size might be 32GB, so this all sounds like we've found the answer;

  • What is Max HDD size for MacBook Pro 15" bought in 2006-07

    Hi
    I bought a MacBook Pro 15" about 3.5 - 4 yrs ago. The model is A1211.
    It came with 120GB HDD, 2GB RAM.
    What is the maximum HDD size that this will support? The Apple store employee says, it will support only upto 160 GB. But, I am skeptical it would be that low.
    So, was wondering if anybody knows the max size, and also, which HDD would be best. I want at least 320 GB.

    You can get a 750 GB drive that is 9.5mm high. As far as I know, the 1 TB drives are all still 12.5 mm high, although that could change at any time.
    The fastest 750 GB drive I know of is this one:
    http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/products/laptops/laptop-hard-drives/
    It is 7200 RPM. At 5400 RPM, there are many other choices. You might want to shop at Newegg, which often has specials on drives, as does Tiger Direct. Newegg also has reviews of individual drives you can look at.
    Personally, I like Western Digital drives, and put the 500 GB Scorpio Black drive in my 2007 MBP, where it has performed without issue. The largest drive that originally shipped with my MBP was a 4200RPM 250 GB drive, the very biggest one you could order in a MBP back then.
    Any 2.5 inch SATA drive should work just fine. The only one I would avoid is WD's 640 GB drive because a number of people have has issues with it in their Macs.
    You might shop around on line a bit, and if you are torn between two or more drives, post back with what they are and ask for opinions. Everybody has favorite drives, so it may not be possible to get anything other than a bunch of opinions.
    One other thing to watch out for. Some drives are sold with or without some form of free fall sensor. Apple has its own built in sensor called the Sudden Motion Sensor. In some machines and drives, there seems to be a conflict between the drive's sensor and Apple's SMS. If that happens, you would need to disable Apple's sensor. Usually it's easier just to select the drive without a built-in sensor and let Apple's SMS work as its designed to do. In the Seagate drive I linked, it's called "G-Force", but would have a different name in a different brand.
    Incidentally, you can up your RAM to 3 GB if you like.
    Good luck!

  • Max HDD Size for Satellite 3000 -514 with BIOS 2.30

    Hi folks !
    What is the largest HD size notebook recognizes with BIOS 2.30.
    I found no FAQ information ragarding this BIOS version.
    Thx for your help.

    Hi
    The Satellite 3000-514 supports the HDD sizes up to 30GB.
    You need a HDD 2.5", 9.5mm support bus master IDE, Ultra 33/66 synchronous DMA
    Bigger HDD sizes are not supported and I suppose the BIOS will not recognize it.

    Hello Erwin!
    As it normally is the same BIOS for them, I think this might help:
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=131
    "On-Board IDE

       Bus Master and Ultra DMA 33/66/100 operation modes. "
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/bios/bos/spt_bos_detail.php?UID=131&kind=1
    BIOS, update version 4.4
    "-Support HDD Size larger than 137GB"
    Hmm, how can you see if you have succesfully updated to version 4.4? because I am not sure if I did it right
    Also it supports HDD larger than 137gb, does it support up to a 300 gb?

  • What is the max hdd size for a macbook 2.1 (late 2006)

    I have a Macbook 2.1 (late 2006). Its 80 MB HDD crashed.
    What maximum HDD capacity/size can my Macbook handle?

    Replace it with any notebook sized, 2.5", SATA I or II HDD. Presently, the largest that will fit is a 1.5 GB drive by Toshiba. You cannot install a drive that is over 9.5 mm high.
    Look for drives at OWC to get an idea of what's available and pricing. You can buy the drive you want anywhere reliable you want, so look for the best price available for the make and model you choose. Good brands are Hitachi, Seagate, Toshiba, and Samsung.

  • Restore dvd and MAX HDD size

    Hi, I assume I have a HDD with a problem, someone gave me this powerbook without DVD s. Used to boot fine but now it just does not. On the apple site I dont see links to buy older (pre intel) OSX disks so I can not run disk utilities or reinstall. Where can I buy and download OSX images that I can create a bootdvd with, from my PC.
    Suppose the HDD is broken, what s the maximum HDD size. Smallest I can get here is 180Gb, originall disk is 60Gb. Here s what is written in battery bay:
    1.3ghz/256Mb/60Gb/Combo/BT/APX

    There are several possibilities if you're in the US - don't know about Italy.
    Get original replacement system discs - You can call Apple Customer Support 1-800-767-2775, provide the Serial Number and specifications of the Mac, and for a fee, a replacement set of system discs (if available), can be ordered. However, the discs will be for the original version of OS, that was pre-installed, when the Mac was manufactured.
    Tiger install DVDs are in short supply. Tiger is no longer available at the Apple Store *but may be available for $129 by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753)*. For other sources, do a Google search for MA453Z/A (10.4.6), MA190Z/A (10.4.3) and M9639Z/A (10.4) . Also look on eBay. Be sure & buy a retail version (black with silver X) and not a model specific version (gray) (See Can I use another Mac's system restore disc on my Mac? ). Expect to pay (possibly a lot) more than the Apple list price of $129.
    After you install the base 10.4.x, update to the final Tiger version 10.4.11. Here's the link for the 10.4.11 combo update http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
    Look at this link Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger Installing Software Support Page
    http://www.apple.com/support/tiger/install/
    You can also download the Tiger Installation and Setup Guide
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/TigerInstall_SetupGuide.pdf
    When you upgrade the OS, do it via Archive & Install. See About the Archive and Install feature http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710
    Be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings. Also, repair permissions before and after the install.
    Leopard is the max OS you can install, but Leopard is no longer available at the Apple Store *but may be available by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753)*.

    After you install the base 10.5, download & install the 10.5.8 combo update at http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate
    You can use the larger HD.

  • Equium L40-17M: What maximum HDD size can I use?

    Just wondering if anyone knows the maximum hard disc size I can install, and what I should be looking for when buying one?
    Many thanks

    Hi
    I think the L40 supports the SATA 2.5 HDD and its not matter what HDD size it is.
    The notebook should handle every 2.5 SATA HDD.
    Currently the 500GB 2.5 HDD is the biggest size on the market but in the next time you will find 2.5 SATA HDD which would support 1TB (1000GB).

  • Max HDD size for Satellite M30

    Hi all,
    I recently aquired a Toshiba Satellite M30 notebook with a defective HDD, Im just wondering what is the maximum size drive I can put in this thing, I have a 250Gb drive I can use, but dunno if it will be able to address the drive at its actual size

    On this old notebook model you can use HDDs with IDE connector only and, as Akuma already wrote, there is 128 GB limitation so I recommend you to buy 100GB IDE HDD and I think it will be OK for this old notebook model.

  • Pavilion DV9605 - Max HDD Size?

    What is the maximum size of  SATA HDD that can be addressed by the DV9605ea?
    The notebook will not recognize the Seagate 7200.4 320GB hdd that I am trying to install in the 2nd drive bay. I am running a 120Gb drive in the 1st bay. Two 120GB drives work just fine.
    HP service desk will not answer this question as they consider is "rendering assistance to an out of warranty item". I have searched forums and cannot find a definitive answer, only conjecture.
    TIA

    I have seen where drive bay two will not recognize a large hard drive on some laptops.  If you can't see the hard drive for bay two in the bios then your PC has a bios limitation of hard drive size.
    Try this: Swap your new drive to bay one and see if the bios will recognize the new larger hard drive.
    I upgraded my DV9700t from two 120 GB to two 320 GB.  But again, my model number is different. Also, I stayed with the same model line (just a larger drive) and manufacturer when I did the hard drive upgrade.

  • Satelite Pro 4200: Which is a max HDD size?

    Hello, Please help. I have a Satelite Pro 4200 with a dead hard drive. I cannot get a 10 GB hd anywhere. I can only find 30 and above. Does anyone know the max size of HD that can be installed in this system? e-mail me: [email protected]
    Thanks.

    Hello Jose
    Unfortunately there is no public document about that. I am pretty sure that 20 GB HDD will work properly. If you want try to call service partner and ask them. They must have this information.
    By the way: as far as I know Toshiba doesnt support hardware upgrade. This is supported by Authorized service partners or independent hardware parts supplier.
