Satellite A500-1DN - Crashing while playing games

Hi all,
My friend bought a Toshiba satellite A500-1DN about 2 months ago. After around 2 weeks she decided to put 2 games on it (guildwars and jedi knight academy). We soon realized that after about 1 hour of gaming, the computer would crash to a black screen rather than going to a blue screen of death. This meant there was no hint of what was specifically causing the problem and no mini dumps from windows...
Having had troubles with those specific games myself on Windows 7, I thought it must be the games.
About a week later she spent around an hour looking through youtube videos only to find that her computer crashed in the same way as the game. So I put some diagnostic software on the computer. Processor / graphic card overheating? But nothing, the temperatures were stable and acceptable and certainly wouldnt have been the cause of these crashes, unless I unluckily missed the point where it did over heat shrugs so I didn't outrule it...
Due to the problem so far seeming to be video related, I downloaded new nvidia drivers (unfortunately the official ones didnt work and I had to hunt for a custom .inf). It didn't solve the problem but the driver seemed to be functioning suitably well.
So in our rage, we sent it back stating that it may be that the cooling for the laptop, ie copper pipes were not sufficient for the graphics card and Toshiba said they had cleaned the computer up replaced thermal paste, all that typical stuff... which seems very fair. We got it back. We played a game and it crashed within 10 minutes. Perhaps even worse than when it left.
Is there anything else that could be causing this problem - video related activites causing crash of computer without going to BSOD or returning any specific errors. What about RAM? I have even uninstalled the HDD protection thinking it might be causing some compatibility problems.
I need some guidance.
The spec is:
Intel core 2 DUO CPU T6600 2.20GHz
Nvidia Geforce GT 230M
4GB RAM

To the above commenter.
Thanks for bashing my response I appreciate I may not be the best computer person under the sun, however I do think my IT degree counts for something!
Also if you hadn't noticed the huge number of people complaining about this issue, if you haven't had the issue good for you, however for those of us that are still struggling you telling us to download patches and BIOs and what not that are completely none related to our issue I find to some what unhelpful.
As for playing with my laptop on my knee, It is also on top of cooling pad which lifts the fans well clear of any clogging.
And if the layout and design of the laptop isn't a problem how come there are so many issues regarding this problem? While I appreciate that you think you know what you are talking about regarding the N series laptops they also have far less RAM, usually don't have a dedicated graphics card and also have the same sized cooling system to cool a much smaller machine.
I have in fact had the pleasure of speaking with my representative who was very sympathetic with my issue and has currently applied to try a replacement and if I am still having an issue will give me either an equal or upgrade which is very kind of them.
This is not a cheap laptop and we should not be having the number of issues described by many owners.
I still believe that some of our computers are just "dud" computers and while the issue with some of them is Extreme like my own, some of you don't seem to have the issue.
There is no current fix for this issue and I would suggest taking it back to you local Toshiba service centre and discuss with them options as they are generally understanding if you are still having issues after the first few visits!
Will keep you updated!

  • Satellite A500-17X restarts while playing games

    Hello all,
I have had my toshiba satellite a500-17x for about two years, I bought it to play Starcraft and world of warcraft. Ever since i got it i have had a problem with it. While playing games it would suddenly restart the laptop. I contacted the customer support and had it taken back to see if they could find out what was wrong with it. They said it was fine and it must be the games software that was causing the problem. (I do not believe that this is the problem since i reinstalled all software and the problem persisted)
I felt that they were trying to bluff me with this answer. Either they did not do an indebt inspection to try to resolve the problem or I believed that the model itself was flawed.
Anyway I wanted to say that the laptop can sometimes play fine for hours but on other days it will crash multiple times.
I just want to point out something; my graphics card driver is up to date. My air vents are completely clear. The temperature is stable. I have put the power management to maximum. I play with a battery in and the laptop is plugged in. This has also happened from a cold start.
During the restart i am given no advanced warning. The laptop just turns off (no beeps, no blue screen) and restarts.
I have never posted here before and i would really appreciate your help.
I know this has been a problem in the past with this model as i have searched forums for solutions but I cant find one.
If you know of a solution I would be very grateful.
    Thanks

    Hi
Gaming issues are always very difficult themes because nobody can say exactly if its caused by game <-> GPU driver compatibility problems or notebook (hardware) issues.
You said you had this issue playing two games but does it happens playing other games or running other applications (no games)???
In your case I recommend checking some gaming forums about StarCraft and WoW.
Maybe you will find some more details about that.
At the other hand the unit supports an NVIDIA GeForce GT 230M graphic chip.
Some people said that nVIdia driver 8.16.11.8973 would run stable

  • Satellite A500-17x restarting while playing games

    Hello,
I got this laptop for christmas, and have recently purchased games through steam, it is then when I came to play Call of Duty 4 that the laptop just randomly restarted itself. At first I thought that it must of overheated, but then it was not hot at all, and had only just been switched on. I then thought it could of been the game conflicting with the computer, so I tried other games such as Counterstrike: Source, no luck it still randomly restarted. Ive played for hours without it turning off then other times just minutes. The laptop is ok when im just surfing the internet etc. but restarts when playing games. I have read other forums expressing the same problem, but have yet to find a solution. I have updated the display drivers from the Toshiba website, from nVidia but still not working.
    Please Help :)

I believe I know the solution.
I've been looking over this forum for a few months with the same problem, looking for developments that might help me solve mine, so I feel it right that I should post here telling you how mine's fixed.
I sent mine off from where I bought it (PC World) for repair, twice. The first time all they did was clean out the fan, but sending it back with the same problem, they changed the motherboard, also known as the mainboard, and it seems to have fixed the problem. I have evidence why this is so from wikipedia. Some of the major functions of a motherboard are:
    - slots for expansion cards (these interface to the system via the buses supported by the chipset)
    - power connectors, which receive electrical power from the computer power supply and distribute it to the CPU, chipset, main memory, and expansion cards.
I always assumed with it switching off on the AC power supply WHILE PLAYING GAMES, there must be some sort of problem with the link between the power and the "expansion cards" e.g graphics and video cards, and it seems that this "link" is indeed the motherboard, so in manufacturing, it sure seems like the model of the motherboard used by Toshiba may have had a minor fault for the model that causes this shut down, unfortunately.
So far there has been no problem using the laptop while playing games, and it seems to be all fine so far!
I hope this answer helped a lot in sorting out your problems, good luck and happy gaming! :)

  • Satellite P300D crashes while playing games

    Hey all,
I have the following issue with my P300D. I installed Win 7 32Bit a week ago and everything worked fine so far.
But now everytime I play a game it crashes after 40 mintues or an hour.
I have to mention that these games worked fine on Vista before.
Well the thing ist, that I have no bluescreen or something, it just goes off. Then I cant start the laptop for a minute or two.
For me it seems like it's preventing not to overheat. But I have no idea what this could be. Is it possible that Win 7 is the issue (got latest graphic drivers, also update BIOS) or is it maybe CPU or ATI Cart goes too hot? Its only crashes while playing, I can work on the PC with other software for hours and nothing happens.
Im really out of ideas so I'll be greatful for every help.

    Hey Prevision,
Sounds like that your notebook is overheating. If the notebook would overheat it often goes out without any reason (bluescreen for example). This is my experience
So I would recommend cleaning the notebook with compressed air spray. It could blow out the dust from the cooling ventilators and this should be done from to time. Compressed air spray isnt expensive, it costs only few Euros and you can get it from every computer shop.
    Check this!!!
Furthermore it would be interesting to know what display driver you have installed. Non Toshiba display drivers are often cause problems because they dont have an overheat protection so check the Toshiba page for a new display driver.

  • MBP 15" always crash while playing games

My MBP 15" always crash while playing  Assassin's Creed 2  . And always crash after exit PES 2011 . How to fix it . T T

Are these games recommended specs following the CPU, the GPU, and RAM of your machine? Is your operating system exactly with the recommended speces of the game?  I.e. a game that says it is 10.6.x compatible has only been tested with 10.6 & 10.6.1, but probably not always 10.6.2 through 10.6.7.

  • Qosmio X300-14V - Crashes while playing games

Hello ! I have some problems with my Toshiba Qosmio X300 14V. While I'm playing games installed on the computer it "crushes". The screen goes black and the speakers start buzzing.
I noticed that if i reinstall teh windows, driverers and directX it won't happen for some time. I also have to mention that it doesn't happen with ALL the games. It mostly happenst to games that require higher performance of teh computer; games like Just Cause 2, Neef For Speed Hot Pursuit, Fallout New Vegas. In one case it happened to a pretty old game, Shadows Ground Survivor.
If anyone can find any reasonable explination please help me. Thanks in advance.
P.S. About 4-5 months ago my HDD crushed, so I bought a new one and installed win 7. At that time I was using win vista home premium x32 with the drivers that were included in the recovery pack. Before the new HDD I had no problems with the computer. Apart from some occasionally crushing because of ovearheating because the venting channels were filled with dust.

    Hi donrumata_1,
Maybe the notebook crashes due overheating?! Have you already tried to clean your notebook with compressed air spray?
This can blow out the dust from cooling ventilators and takes only few minutes. Furthermore its not necessary to disassemble the notebook so its very easy and not complicated.
=> [How to clean the cooling system of a Toshiba notebook|http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/HTD7A01ZZ000AR01.htm]
From my own experience I can say its very useful and I do it every 3 months. So the notebook is much cooler and more silent because the fan doesnt run so often anymore.

    Hello
I have problem with my Toshiba A500-132 laptop, it has Intel P8700 2,6Ghz procesor, ATI Radeon HD 4650. When I'm playing games that need extensive power after few minutes computer shutsdown, propably hes overheating, ive bought cooling pad but it doesnt change lot. Is this malfuncion or normal response of a system to overheating.
    Sincerly Unab

    Hi, mate
You aren't the 1st person in this forum who has such problem with A500. The most possible reason is overheating. Have you enabled ,,maximum performance,, in cooling method in ,,Power plan? Also, you should try to clean with the compressed air spray...

  • Intel hd 4600 crashes while playing games

I have an HP ENVY 700 series PC with an Intel i5 processor and an Intel HD 4600 onboard graphics processor running Windows 8.1 64 bit.  When playing high graphics games the computer will restart itself.  This happens with all full screen games, (Diablo III, Starcraft II, Sim City, etc).  I have tried all of the suggestions given on other forums.  None work.  I have the game graphics set to the lowest settings and the resolution in the game set to the same resolution the computer uses.
Does anyone have any REAL solution to this problem.

    Fred, welcome to the forum.
The best solution is a discrete video card.  Integrated video simply is not designed for gaming.  This will no doubt require a power supply unit (PSU) upgrade, as well.
If you would like more help, you should provide the full model of the computer.

  • Satellite A500-19W - Suddenly restarts during games

    Hello Guys,
I recently got a new Satellite A500-19W, but while playing games it suddenly restarts.
Any idea what might be causing this and how to solve it.
    Thanks,

    Hi Malek_1,
This happened also to me on Satellite A300. The reason was because my notebook was overheating and so I decided to clean it using compressed air spray. Its pretty easy because therefore its not necessary to disassemble the notebook and it blows out the dust from the cooling ventilators.
    Check this!!!
Furthermore in Windows Power Management you can choose between different cooling methods. I use Maximum Performance mode.

  • S890 screen turns off while playing games

I bought this phone a week ago.Everything about this phone is awesom except one thing. The screen turns off while playing games automatically, which is really annoying. Is there any fix for this??

    Graphics card springs to mind;
also, in your game settings, in either options or video settings (or similar). Are the settings correct for your card. I know on a low end PC, "full hardware acceleration" can cause crashing.
I'd still think, it's more a graphics related problem. If you have a big flat screen mintor (e.g 24,27 or even 30") then that, in it's own right needs a good card. Add the game to it and you may have problems. I do take it you have compared the specs with what's required on the box (of the game) and "about this mac/"more info"). All the best.

My phone's battery got drained while playing games and now it wont open if i connect it to my charger,?.what can i do? my phone was given to me as a gift from the a relative in the US and im from the Philippines. How can i fix it? Do i need to bring it to any apple center to have it replaced? or is there a quick fix to this problem?...

Keep iPhone on Wall Charger for 10 minutes, it may turn ON itself. If still OFF, keep on Wall Charger and Reset, hold both Home and Power buttons until the iPhone begins to start, this can sometimes take about 20 seconds time of holding both buttons while on charger.
