Satellite A505-S6973 - OS Upgrade

Hi all,
I'm curious to find out has anyone attempted to upgrade their A505-S6973 satellite series laptop with windows vista home premium x64 chipset to windows 7 ultimate x64.
I'm asking because i'd like to know if their any compatibility issues, can the system accomodate the installation and with the tvap and eco utilities do they work.
I have to upgrade my system but i want to do a clean installation and wipe my drive means i'll loose all drivers so i'm hoping it's been done and the drivers are easy to locate for re-installation.
Thanks for any and all suggestions, much appreciated.

  • Satellite A505-S6973 and OS Upgrade

    Fellow toshiba laptop users,
I'm here tonight to find out, my laptop has the touchpad and quickplay buttons and I was wondering if I were to upgrade my pc to Windows 7 would i be able to use all these features (plus eco utility and pc health monitor).
I ask this question because currently my pc has, what is supposed to be a 500Gb harddisk, 317 GB hard disk space available but i barely have information or documents stored on my system. I can understand i have programs installed but still to occupy that amount.
So, long story short, if i were to remove and install the Windows 7 operating system, and i installed the toshibha value added package and eco utility programs would that be all I would need to dload and install because i like this pc.
Also can anyone with a Toshiba Satellite A505-S6973 tell me if they can the feel the breeze coming out of their laptop because my fan seems to blow slow and the temperature on my system is always high, currently FAN SPEED 90% and CPU TEMPERATURE 64%, and I hav my system configured to use low power.
I appreciated any and all comments, suggestions and advice...

I don't have US notebook model and cannot answer to your second question but I know for sure that Win7 works well on Satellite A500.
Two months ago I had friends Satellite A500 at home. Originally it was preinstalled with Vista.
I made two experiments to see how it works with Win7. At first I have upgraded it with Toshiba upgrade kit and everything was OK.
With clean OS installation everything was OK too.
Before you start Win7 installation please check Toshiba support page to be sure which version is fully supported. Here in Europe only Win7 64bit is fully supported.

I tried to use System Restore, but it tells that it did not find a restore time that is good.
The main concern right now for me is to get my personal data and files from the computer. I still have other computer to use, so I am not so worried about start up the computer. I want to find out a way to first back up my personal data and files from the computer to an external devices, then try to fix the computer. Thank you.

Yes, that's exactly what you should do first. Later we'll try to resurrect Windows. This is my favorite way nowadays.
     1. Prepare a thumb drive formatted in FAT32. It doesn't need to be large. This stuff only occupies 130 MB on mine.
    2. Download UNetbootin to create the thumb drive.
    3. Download a Puppy Linux .iso file for the operating system.
    4. Run Unetbootin-windows-xxx.exe and point it to the Lupu-xxx.iso file to create a bootable drive.
    5. When you power on your computer, hold down the F12 key. That should give you the opportunity to choose the boot drive.
    6. For some tips, scroll down to the following sections at this web page.

  • Keyboard Issues on Satellite A505-S6973

    Goodday again everyone,
Can anyone tell me if the onboard keypad on my Satellite A505-S6973 has a backlight.
I'm watching alot of these new laptops and similar to mine, under the keypad it's white and I'm not sure if it's like that because it's supposed to light. If so, can anyone tell me.

On Toshiba US support page I have checked notebook specification and obviously your notebook doesnt have this illuminated keyboard.
Just for info: all illuminated keyboards have FN+Z option for enabling/disabling illumination.
With other words small keyboard symbol will be placed on Z key.
This option, when illuminated keyboard is in the notebook, is also available in Toshiba HWSetup tool.

  • Satellite A505-S6973 - No sound of my laptop speakers

I own an A505-S6973 and today i lost volume on my speakers. When i jack in my headphones i get sound but without the headphones plugged in, I get no sound of my laptop speakers.
I checked device manager for software problems but everything is cleared, also, my volume is fully on.
I attempted a restore, but was unsuccessful, also i tried to uninstall and reinstall value added package but when attempting to launch the software after extracting it an error[0x8146045B] signals itself.
This morning everything seemed to work fine, the only thing i can think of, i removed windows media my network places sharing.
If this is the culprit can someone guide me on how I can re-install it. Also, the value added package issue, is there anything that can be done, because the buttong to enable/disable touchpad when depress nothing happens but if i use the function key with F9 it enables/disables.
I really hope someone can help me, it seems this is an unlucky weekend for me.

As I see, the VAP utility makes problems. The next step I advise you to do a little bit dangerous as you have to remove some elements in registry, but before
    1. Make the ,,Hidden Folders,, to be seen. (Control Panel- Appearance and Personalization-Folder Options (click the , show hidden files,, and then choose ,, Show hidden files, folders,, and Apply)
2 Go to C:\Users\, here you should choose your profile name, in my case it ,, jeka,, \AppData\Local\temp\TC20020600B.temp\ Here you should see TVAP folder, remove it completely
3 Run the ,,regedit,, that found in Windows folder. Choose ,, Edit,, -,,Find,, and type in ,,toshiba value added,, In left Column you will see highlighted folder with value like 8FFFC660FB2109346A37579FE5FF81E8, delete it. restart computer.
Then, start Tvap exe, it should work now. But you should be careful working with registry, don't delete anything other

  • Satellite A505-S6973 overheating and fan works often

I hate doing this but I seem to have encountered another problem which i have been searching and reading with the hopes of correcting myself. I presently own a Satellite series laptop with an Intel Cor 2 Duo T6500 2.1Ghz processor.
I 've been monitoring my system for performance issues andi've noticed that for sometime (unsure when) the temperature on my system has risen significantly. I'm seeing from my PC Health Monitor that my processors temperature is running at 59% and fan speed is at 78% yet when I place my hand near the cooling fins at the side of my laptop I can barely feel any breeze but a co-worker of mine has a vostro and the fan feels like it's running on NOs.
If there is anything that can be done I'd greatly appreciate this, i'm afraid of loosing my system due to something simple that cause overheating.
N.B. I noticed that at one time different users posted threads stating that after updating there BIOS they experienced overheating problems. If this is the cause of anywhere near it please help.

Are you sure that your notebook is overheating?
In my opinion you cant compare this with other notebook models because every notebook has its own cooling modules and fans and there are not standard parts as on desktop computers. Furthermore its also important which form factor your notebook has. Larger and bigger notebooks have a better cooling assembly as smaller ones.
Anyway, in my opinion you could try cleaning your notebook using compressed air spray. This should always be done from time to time to blow out the dust from the cooling ventilators. Therefore its not necessary to disassemble the notebook.

  • How to sort out different issues on Satellite A505-S6973

Can anyone tell me, if the warranty period on my laptop has not passed, can i return my laptop to toshiba and have all my issues sorted out. Would there be a cost to do whatever repairs software related needs be done and how i am supposed to go about it because my laptop is beginning to have all sorts of little errors, i noticed that my harddrive has 156gb used although i have about 60 gigs in use.
A couple multimedia buttons aren't working but i touch them, my touchpad doesn't turn off with the hard button unless i turn it off using the FN key and my processor runs low but when i use a program i see it's reaching between 85 to 100% utilization.
I really like this laptop, but the issues i'm having i highly doubt it should operate this way.

    Hi mate
Software issues are not covered by warranty!
This means that you will have to pay for everything if the ASP technician would not find any problems!
This is why you should recover the notebook in order to check if its only a software related issue.
    >A couple multimedia buttons aren't working but i touch them, my touchpad doesn't turn off with the hard button unless i turn it off using the FN key
Reinstall the VAP (value added package) and flash cards utility
    >my processor runs low but when i use a program i see it's reaching between 85 to 100% utilization.
This is not a bug or hardware problem. You will notice this CPU behavior because the CPU supports an feature which helps to save the power and reduce the heat dissipation

  • Satellite A505-S6973 Web Cam won't turn off

I recently signed up for Google Chat with the option to use the Video Chat feature.  Ever since I can't get the web cam to turn off, even when I'm not even logged on the Internet!  I don't like having the little light shining in my face every time I turn on the computer.
How can I turn off the camera when I'm not using it?

If you can get it to boot up again, I'd suggest doing a restore to out-of-box state to see if you have a hardware issue or software.  If after restoring it to out-of-box state you are still experiencing problems, it is likely hardware failure (i.e., cpu, hdd, motherboard, etc.).

After installing Firefox 4 Beta my graphics card keept crashing on my laptop. After looking at the reliability report on the laptop i noticed that a key event that happend shortly before the video crashing began was that i installed Firefox 4 Beta. From this i uninstalled Firefox 4 Beta and went back to Firefox 3.6. My laptop has not had a video crash since then.

  • Multiple Problems with Toshiba Satellite A505-S6980 laptop??

    Hi,
We purchased the Toshiba Satellite A505-S6980 laptop at Best Buy about a week ago.  However, we seem to be having multiple problems with it, that I wouldn't have expected from a brand new Toshiba.
    Problems:
Whenever I'm in Mozilla Firefox browser, it crashes 90% of the time.  Firefox was always my favorite on our previous computer, and still is, I just can't use it because it continually crashes.
In Outlook, whenever I try to open a message or reply, or basically any general command, it pops up an error message that says, "Could not install the custom actions," and then does whatever I'd wanted it too.  It's a pain, as we do a lot of email and calendar through Outlook.
In Outlook, when I tried to import our Contacts, it says that we do not have the appropriate permissions to access the files.  We are the only user account on this computer.  We don't do seperate ones for each family member; we just turn on the PC.
It seems to me like the internet crawls on this computer.  Every time we try to play a video (e.g. ABC, CNN, Youtube), it won't buffer.  It just stops and starts all throughout the video about every 3 seconds.  HUGE nuisance.  We watch a lot of videos.
Minor issue:  In Firefox, before it has crashed that is, on my old computer I used to be able to type "cnet" without the quotes into the address bar, and it would take me to www.cnet.com.  If it couldn't find the page, it would take me to my default search engine's page (Yahoo) with the search results.  On this one, if I type anything into the address bar (like search terms/keywords) it bring up search results with a My Start Incredimail search engine.  I want my Yahoo search engine, and I want it to find the page if it can.
I cannot seem to get the Aero Flick (I think) to work.  That was one of the main things I was looking forward to, but I can't figure out how to do it.
It seems to me like the Windows Explorer freezes a lot.
There have been multiple times when I'm typing that the keys don't work.  Like I would have to press the A key about 10 times to get it to show up on the screen once.  It's hit and miss and doesn't do it all of the time.
This isn't a problem - just a question.  Is it best to leave the computer plugged in all of the time if it's stationary?  Or once it's fully charged, should I unplug it and let the power run down, and then re-charge it?
**CLARIFICATION:  It's not Outlook Express, it's Microsoft Office Outlook 2007.  The one that you have to pay for.  Surely it works with 7, considering it's Microsoft?!?!
If you can help me answer any of these problems/questions, I would really appreciate it.
Have a safe and Merry Christmas!

Yes, everything was fine with Firefox.  However, I have uninstalled it, and am just using Internet Explorer for now.
    Thanks for battery info...
I'm well within the return window, but overall really like the laptop.  I've put a lot of time into it, and just want it to work right if possible.
    Thanks for the info.
ScottinFla wrote:Concerning Firefox, have you checked your add-on list for any faulty plug-ins or extensions? Try disabling them and see what happens. Also, that search engine you mentioned may have somehow been installed on your machine. Have you checked the "Manage search engines..." window available from the search bar? Check your add-ons as well. You could always reinstall Firefox from scratch.
As for the battery, it may not be best to continually run down the battery - followed by a long charge. Once a month or so should be fine. Otherwise, just try to give the battery some exercise every now and then.
Are you still within the return window? Your unit may have a bad install, some bad RAM, or...
I have the same model and it works just fine.

  • NEW Satellite A505 - Blu-ray won't play on WinDVD or Toshiba DVD player

I purchased a Satellite A505 (Windows 7) with a Blu-ray disc player that was pre-loaded with WinDVD, Toshiba DVD player, and one other player (?) - all this software was added 12/21/2009 (by the manufacturer). When I put in a Blu-ray disc WinDVD stops responding and I have to start the task manager to "end task." The Toshiba player says "media not supported." I used the recommended compatibility settings (Windows XP) and it says "incompatible application." I tried using a Sony Vaio w/ Blu-ray and had no problems with the same disc using WinDVD. I don't know what's wrong (and I'm not super tech savvy) - my settings, my drivers, my hardware... ???
I also downloaded the free trial of Corel's WinDVD 2010 and it wouldn't play on that either...
*Note - my model number is A505-S6012 but I can't find this as an existing model on any of the Toshiba sites. It was delivered to the store around 1/4/10, so it's brand new. The A505-S6990 has most of the same features though.

    jacuielaura,
I had the exact same issue with the Win DVD BD that was preloaded on my A505-S6014 when I purchased it. I myself also downloaded the Win DVD 2010 free trial and it did not work. Reason being is that they are only allowing people to trial the DVD version of Win DVD 2010 and not the Win DVD BD 2010. I also tried Cyberlink's PowerDVD and it worked but it digitized terribly. So I uninstalled both trials and went to support.toshiba.com and found what I needed to fix it.
I recommend you uninstall the original Win DVD BD version you have and any trial editions you downloaded and follow what I have listed below to fix your problem.
This is only a recommendation. Uninstall and install software at your own risk. If this fix doesn't work for you then you will have to call Toshiba and request a disc to reinstall your original software you uninstalled.
This is how I fixed mine:
Go to Support > Download > then choose your category (Laptop) then your Family (Satellite) then you're model #(A505-6012). Or you can just enter S6012 in the search box and it should bring up a list of all Laptop models with S6012 in them. Choose yours and click Go.
Now from the two drop down lists choose which Operating system: (Windows 7 64 bit) should be what you have, then choose Blu-Ray in the 2nd drop down list.
Download and SAVE these files to your desktop or My Downloads folder so you do not have to search for them again after you reboot.
You should now see this listed:
WinDVD BD for Toshiba for Windows 7 (32/64)(v8.0; 11-05-2009; 176.1M)
Also you will need to download the (Intel Management Engine Interface driver) which is listed in the drop down list under Utility (2nd page):
Intel Management Engine Interface for Windows XP/7 (32/64)(v6.0.0.1184; 10-08-2009; 6.39M)
Reboot after each installation even if it doesnt tell you to.
After both downloads have been installed and the OS is completely loaded again, insert a Blu-Ray disc and hopefully it should automatically play.
P.S. When playing Blu-Ray's I turn my power management to Performance. This may also help.
    Good luck!
    Hailofaguy

  • Hard disk error on Toshiba Satellite A505 56980

    Hello,
Windows keeps bringing up a notification that the hard disk on my Toshiba laptop(A505 56980) has errors. It recommends for me to get hardware technical support to determine if the disk can be repaired or needs to be replaced.
My disk name is TOSHIBA MK5055GSX and I have only one volume C:\ drive.
I am running my antivirus scan just to make sure I don't have any active viruses or trojans damaging my hard drive. My computer freezes for a few seconds on and off. Not sure if this is related to the hard disk error.
I have backed up all my info and also created system recovery disk. I also have the recovery disks from when I got the laptop.
My question is how do I go about diagnosing the hard disk error and geting it fixed? What is the warranty for hard disks? I bought this laptop beginning of last year.
I appreciate any help I can get to resolve this problem.
    Thanks

Perhaps your model name/number is Satellite A505-S6980?

Restart your system, when you see the Toshiba logo start pressing the F8 key repeatedly until you enter the Advanced Boot Options Menu, choose 'Repair Your Computer'.
This should take you to the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRe)
Select 'Command Prompt', and type in this command, hit the 'Enter' key, and restart your computer:
       chkdsk c: /r
This will check your hard drive, try to recover any corrupted files/data it can, and repair any problems it can. It takes a while to run anyway. But, if there are problems with your hard drive, it could take many hours. Just keep checking back, it will give a report as it goes, and when it's finished.
Let us know the results. Good luck.

  • Satellite A505 Doesn't Recognize HP Printer

My Satellite A505 laptop doesn't recognize my HP Color LaserJet 2550L printer, when I connect them with a USB line.  I tried going to the HP site to download the drive for the 2550L, but that site said Windows 7 already had it! Suggestions?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Did not work.  I tried installing the printer and driver using the add printer function (per the video), and, while I got a message that said the printer had successfully installed, neither the test page, nor a second, 1-page Word document, would print --  even though the printer is on, with paper loaded, no jams, and a green light, the USB cable is in tight (printer and laptop), but I get a printer job status of "Error" whenever a job enters the print queue.
Same thing happened when I tried to load the driver from the original disk that came with the printer (I suspect the original driver isn't ready for Windows 7, but I have Windows 7 set to "automatic update", so I'm expecting it to go onto the internet and find the newest version of my driver, one that IS compatible -- that's the whole point of the auto update function).  Another issue I encountered, when I tried to load the driver manually, from the original disk, was it came back with a pop-up window that advised loading the driver with the "Printer Wizard", so I know that had to be a pre-Windows 7 disk.
FYI -- I had this same problem trying to use an old Brother Laserprinter at home -- the USB wouldn't recognize the printer.  Loaded it via Windows, but got printer error message on any document I tried to print.
This should be so simple! Plug 'n Play, via USB.  Maddening!

  • Toshiba Satellite A505 - Operating system windows 7

Toshiba Satellite A505 - Operating system windows 7
    1) Unable to get the main part of my touch pad to respond to tapping.  In the control panel we made sure that tapping and tap zone was enable.  Someone said to hold fn & f9 simultaneously but it still doesn't let me tap on the larger main part of touch pad.
    2) When trying to turn up volume by + sign it makes a alarm sound (PC beep) and as soon as I let go it goes back to where it was.  When using icon in system tray it does the same thing (alarm sounds (PC beep)  and it automatically goes back all the way down). Even going into control panel >sound>speaker >properties to turn up volume does the same thing.  Any help with these two problems would be greatly appreciated.

ok number 1, try going to ''device manager'' which is found by typing it into the white box when you press the start windows button in the far bottom left corner, the find the device that controls your touchpad... e.g (smart pad etc), it should be easy to find under ''mice and other pointing devices'' then id like you to ''disable'' the device, ignore any messages, and then wait a few seconds, and go back and ''enable'' it, then restart, this should resolve the problem, otherwise its a case that it is damaged, or needs updated drivers or re installing, but try that first...
Number 2, this is an ongoing problem, and should only last for a few mins until it fixes, if the problem is more serious try this: go to the speaker icon, and right click, then click, ''playback devices'' then the tabs at the top? you see one called ''communications'' well, click that tab, and change the setting to ''do nothing'' see if that resolves it. if not i obviously have more complex solutions, im just giving you thr most common fixes.
