Satellite A60 - CPU upgrade question

Hi there people.
I have upgraded the memory on my gf's quite old a60 laptop, but want to upgrade the cpu as well now as she is running the celeron 2.8.
The laptop manual says i can have the followng cpu's:
Intel celeron up to 2.8ghz (which i currently have)
Mobile intel pentium 4 processor up to 3.06 ghz
Mobile intel pentium 4 processor up to 3.2 ghz supporting htt
other processors may be introduced and a level 2 cache from 128kb to 1mb
I am trying to work out whether this means i can have the northwood 130nm 3.2ghz or whether i can have the prescott 90nm 3.2ghz.
If I could have the prescott, would I not be able to get the 3.46 ghz prescott?
As these cpus are quite hard to find, i am just checking to see if i can have any of these..., also how easy is it to get in and change the chip inside the laptop :D
While I am asking, is it worth upgrading the hard drive from 40gb 4200 rpm to a 7200 rpm one?
Many thanks for your time people

I wouldn't install a Prescott, they get very hot! The cooling fan may not be able to keep the CPU cool.
Installing a Northwood would be the best option. Looking in google, it appears this laptop can definitely accept Northwood CPU's.
The jump from a Celeron to a Northwood is a big step. But from Northwood to Prescott is only a small step.
I would choose this one: http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sSpec=SL77N
As for the HDD, 7200RPM drives can get hot and are noisy, and are not that much faster than a 5400RPM drive. A 5400RPM HDD would be the smart choice.

  • Satellite A60 memory upgrade doesn't work - help

Hi, I have a Satellite A60-793 and I would like to upgrade the memory adding a 512 MB to currently installed memory.
I tried to install a 512MB PC2700 DDR 333MHz SODIMM module, but system won't boot up: it emits a long whistle, then shuts down automatically. If I remove the module, system boots properly.
I've allready updated my BIOS, i there anything more I can do to make it work?

    Well I apreciate your attention.
But I still have a doud here, do you think it may be solved if I change the actual 8chip module for one 16chip module low density with the same caracteristics? I was told these were more compatible modules.
    Any advise for this?
    Thanks!

  • Cpu upgrade question ... again !

OK, I've done more research on the motherboard this system has got, and it turns out that it is an OXNARD ( gateway 2000 ) motherboard ..... looks exactly like the msi 6330-lite motherboard .... so I am assuming its a 6330 lite motherboard.
The gateway website shows the motherboard as capable of taking up to a athlon 1.3 Mhz cpu, although I am simply looking at upgrading to a 1.2 athlon cpu ( 100 mhz variety )
also, I have noted the bios that is installed on my machine here is the 0AAVWP02 version that gateway provided .... I am still wondering a couple things :
1 - can i simply get an athlon 1.2 Mhz cpu and ( as i have been told in an earlier post ) clear the cmos to upgrade my machine ? Also, how exactly do i clear the cmos on this board ? Or will I have to upgrade the bios, which I am very unsure of how to do on this particular motherboard ... making me very nervous here ...
2 - if I DO have to upgrade the bios on this motherboard, what version of the gateway bios do i need , and how, exactly, do i do it ? I am not the most savvy pc user, have upgraded bios a few times before on other machines, and done a couple cpu upgrades too, but anyone got any suggestions for a semi-newb on this upgrade ?
    thanks, warren

    Ok..
i really dont think that u should assume that the two mainboard are identical just because they look the same..
Upgrading... Well... Its different from MB to MB... On MSI, all u have to do is plug the CPU and the MB configures it self.. (ALl u have to do is set the FSB).. But on other manifactires, u might have to set up the clock speed ratio and the core voltages manualy using jumpers.. U need the MB maunal to do this..
clearing CMOS.. I dont c why u need to do this.. But if u really want to then there should be a small jumper of three pins with a cap in the first two pins. Pul it out and plug in into the next two pins and again plug it into the first two pins.. (DONT DO THIS WITH THE COMPUTER ON).. If this doesnt work then pull the battary out, wait for a few min ans put it back in

  • Satellite A60 - HDD Replacement question

I have an old Toshiba Satellite A60. The HDD has recently died and I am looking to replace it. What I would like to know is what spec of disc drive the Toshiba Satellite A60 can support. It originally had a MK3025GAS
    HDD2196B ZE01 S 30GB 2.5" drive.
    1. I would like to replace it with a bigger capacity drive. What capacity (gb) and speed can the A60 support ?
    2. Do I need to replace it with a toshiba drive or can I use any other 2.5" drive (Seagate, Fujitsu, etc ...) ?

    Hi
As far as I know the old Satellite A60 supports an IDE controller.
This means that you have to use an IDE 2.5 HDD (ATA).
As far as I know the older IDE controller are limited to 128GB due to 28bit LBA (logical bit adressing).
So maybe you should start with an 120GB HDD which should be compatible even if the controller would be limited to 128GB.
But ATA-6 standard (also called UATA-100) supports 48bit LBA so in such case its not limited to 128GB. You can check the HDD controller using some freeware tools like Everest Home Edit or SANDRA soft to get details about the controller built in the A60.
    > 2. Do I need to replace it with a toshiba drive or can I use any other 2.5" drive
You can use any HDD which meets the requirements (IDE, 2.5)

  • Cq62-423nr cpu upgrade question

    hello all:
i would like to upgrade my cpu from a single core to a dual core. i need to know which dual core processors are compatible with my notebook.
    i have a CQ62-423NR
ty in advance for any help
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Here is the Manual, which you will need:
    Service Manual
Your motherboard has the GL40 chipset and Celeron 900 processor and the GL40 is designed to only be used with Celeron processors. There is one compatible dual core Celeron processor, the T3500 as described here:
Intel Penryn T3500 Processor (3M cache, 2.1 GHz) (for model 1.2 only) 625830-001
Your processor is single core 2.2 ghz and the T3500 is dual core 2.1 ghz with the same cache. You would notice some speed improvement. You can't completely discount the beneficial effect of two cores. The best thing I can say is the T3500 is dirt cheap which reflects that it is not an impressive performer but still a little better than the Celeron 900.
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Mobile-Celeron-Dual-Core-T3500-SLGJV-2-1GHz-800MHz-1MB-Socket-P-CPU-La...
If you can do the work yourself $10 is a no-brainer investment but if you really want improved performance consider a solid state drive. Prices are coming down and are almost affordable now even to upgrade older hardware.

  • Quicksilver CPU upgrade question

Hi, I've got a 733mhz quicksilver G4. I'm looking into upgrading to a dual 800mhz quicksilver cpu. Sound like a plan? I know not to get an mdd cpu as I've heard they won't work in the quicksilvers. Does this sound like a plan, the dual 800mhz?....is it worth it/ do you think I'll see a difference? The only thing this computer is mainly used for is online...it's a clean system, yet with all the moving ads they keep putting on yahoo, weather.com, etc...the single 733mhz is seeming a bit slow...even with a good amount of ram I have in there. Will this swap be a simple one 'pop out, pop in'....or is there anything I need to do since it's a double on mb with originally a single cpu? Thanks for your advice! How do you calculate the cpu speed...i know that this dual 800mhz is not the same as a 1.6ghz, but what would you call it equivalent to? Thanks for your advice-
    Message was edited by: funylinks2004

    Hi-
Any of the Quicksilver CPUs are plug and play/ interchangeable in the QS.
Just get the heatsink with it, as they vary. Dual processors must have a dual processor specific heatsink.
A dual 800 is equivalent to a 800 Mhz processor, except that there are two of them, that's all.
It is better than the QS single 800 MHz processor in that the single doesn't have a L3 cache.
What a dual does for you is to help with multitasking in OS X, speed up dual processor aware software and boost graphics and video handling ability.
A single 933 MHz processor is quite a bit faster than a 800 MHz processor, and way better than the 733 MHz processor due to L3 cache.
However, the dual 800 also has the L3 cache, so it will feel a bunch faster than the 733.

  • QS 733 CPU upgrade question

I just purchased a first gen QS 733 yesterday. I'm new to Power Mac hardware but not to PC hardware so give me a slight break. I don't quite understand the daughter boards that the G4 is utilizing. I upgraded the system to 1.5GB of PC133 that I had laying around but need to add a larger hard drive and processor. So with that in mind I have 3 questions.
    1. What processors can I use? I see on the sonnet page that their procs are compatible on QS 2001 and 2002. So does that mean I can use any QS or MDD G4 proc in my GS 2001? Also, I see dual proc 800mhz daughter boards on eBay, can those be used in my system?
    2. I see some posts that state I can't use a drive larger than 128GB in some QS systems. Is this all systems or is there a way I can figure out short of sticking a 200GB drive in.
    3. Also, along the lines of hard drives, I have a 500 GB Seagate Firewire drive. Will the QS recognize its full size?

    Welcome to the Mac community.
    1. Don't know.

Possible Alternative - SpeedTools ATA Hi-Cap Support Driver: Allows the use of extended capacity ATA drives (drives greater than 128 Gigabytes in size) on older (Pre Mirrored Door) G4 and G3 Macintoshes running MacOS X versions 10.2 and later. Cost $24.95
    http://www.speedtools2.com/ATA6.html
Possible Alternative 2 - Larger than 128GB drives can be used by adding a PCI ATA/100 or ATA/133 controller card, one which is 48-bit LBA compliant; or by adding a PCI SATA controller card and using SATA drives.
    3. On firewire drives you are not limited in size, so the 500GB will work.

  • KT4 Ultra CPU Upgrade Question

I am trying to upgrade my CPU from a 2100 XP to a 2800 XP on my KT4 Ultra and am running into trouble.  I was under the impression that all I had to do was turn up the FSB frequency in CMOS and everything would be OK howerver this doesn't appear to be the case.  Currently the FSB Freq. is set to 100 and I can get it above 104 or the system will not POST.  Has anyone out there put a 2800 with the latest BIOS in a KT4?  What setting need to be changed and what values should be used in CMOS??
    Help please!!!!

    set to 166

  • CPU Upgrade questions

I was wondering if my laptop cpu can be upgraded from a intel pentium to a i5 and if so where do i find out the compatible CPU's?

Sorry it cannot be without also replacing the motherboard. See page 17 of the Manual here: Manual Celeron and Pentium models use a different motherboard so the best you can do is upgrade to the Pentium 2030M which is only .1 ghz faster than the 2020M you have. Installing a new motherboard and processor is not going to make financial sense. If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

  • CPU upgrade on Satellite A60

Hello, i want to upgrade the cpu on my Satellite A60 celeron d345, what kind of processors are supported?
    Thanks

    Hi
I can not give you any informations about the CPU prices because it depends on the computer dealer.
Mostly the online dealers are much cheaper. So simply use a search-and-compare prices engine in the net.
Now something about the motherboard compatibility:
The Toshiba Satellite A60 is a full size notebook PC based on the Intel Portability P4 processor, providing high-speed processing capabilities and advanced features.
In my knowledge the motherboard should be ale to handle the Intel P4 (Northwood), P4 (Prescott) and Celeron (Northwood) CPUs.
    - P4 (Northwood) 2.66/2.8/3.06/3.2 GHz
    - P4 (Prescott) 518(2.8 GHz)/532(3.06 GHz)/538(3.2 GHz)/552(3.46 GHz)/558(3.60 GHz)
    - Celeron (Northwood) 2.5/2.6/2.7/2.8 GHz
    - Celeron (Prescott) 325(2.53 GHz) / 330 (2.66 GHz) / 335(2.8 GHz) 340 (2.93G) / 345 (3.066 GHz) / 350(3.2 GHz)
But note; everything what you do is at your own risk!!

  • Memory upgrade on Satellite A60-218

    Hi,
Is it possible to upgrade the memory for the Satellite A60-218 models?
I've heard that the memory is onboard (internal) and cannot be replaced. Is this true?
If not, could somebody give me a hint where can I find the memory modules on this model?
I have tried disassembling it without success.
    Thanks!
    Levente

    Hello
Just for info: Satellite A60 has 512 MB internal memory and one sot only is available for upgrade. This unit can handle with max 1,5 GB of RAM. On the bottom side in the middle there is placed memory module cover. Remove it and you will find RAM slot.
For RAM upgrade you can use follow compatible memory modules:
    PC2700 512MB (PA3312U-1M51)
    PC2700 1024MB (PA3313U-1M1G)

My Queston is if there is any possibitity to change my Radeon Mobility 7000 igp of my Satellite A60 for a better card or do i have to by a complete new Mainboard?

    Hello
This theme was discussed a lot of time in the forum and there is a simply and short answer: No, its not possible to upgrade the graphic card.
The card is a little chip which is fixed on the mainboard.
About the motherboard changing: Well, its not very easy because of a exact fitting and compatibility.
    Bye

  • CPU upgrade on Satellite L30-101

Hi, I have a Toshiba Satellite L30-101. I've upgraded the RAM successfully to 2GB (2x 1GB) but I'm finding it incredibly hard to get information on processor replacements.
The laptop has the latest BIOS on it (3.10-WIN - 19/02/08) but when trying to find information regarding whats in it I'm hitting brick walls. Firstly the site > http://www.toshiba-tro.de/biosinfo/ < doesn't have my laptop on it,
    Product Type: Notebook
    Family: Satellite
    Product Series: Satellite L Series
    Model: ? unknown
    Short Model No: ? unknown
I did hope I could stick an Intel Duo in but with the ATI chipset, I'm pretty sure it wont work but again without knowing whats within BIOS, compatible.. I'm lost. The only processor I can find which may work, same package, FSB, socket is an Intel Core Solo Processor T1350 which kicks out 1.86 GHz, not a massive difference and I'm sure it can't be the only replacement option.
Could someone and staff please help me with getting hold of BIOS info and compatible processors for my laptop. The current Intel Celeron M Processor 410 kicking out 1.46 GHz isn't good enough for Vista (cert on laptop) and basic multi tasking. Its lagging way too much even after a good tune up, ram upgrade, HD upgrade to 7200RPM. I'm in need of a processor upgrade but as mention finding it incredibly hard to obtain information of which would be compatible.
    Sincerely,
    Gourcuff

    Hello
In my opinion your attempt to replace CPU is wrong. Why? Satellite L30 is not designed to offer some fabulous performance and it is designed for everyday usage. Best evidence for this was the price. It was not so expensive.
Can you please tell us why do you want to have new CPU? Do you use some special software?
Back to CPU replacement. As you probably know mobile computers have limited upgrade options and it is related to RAM and HDD upgrade. It is definitely unprovided for CPU upgrade and it is not supported. Specific design, especially cooling system is designed for certain CPU.
Due to all this you will not be able to find any relevant info about CPU replacement.
Check please this Toshiba document - http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB9401AX0001R01.htm
