Satellite A60 - White Screen Freeze on Boot up

Hi
My laptop Satellite A60-106 has developed some problem on boot up. It just freezes onto a white screen on boot up before I see any graphics. It looks as though it can access the DVD/CD drive but any attempt to boot up with a recovery disc fails in the same white screen and it freezes. I have tried the manufacturers advice as powering up with the F12 key pressed and another suggestion on the
CD to hold the C key down whilst turning on the power brings the same result.
Nothing but the white screen. I have tried F8 to see if I can get into safe mode but it won't move on past the initial clunking of the drives and then silence. I can't think of any way to get this to allow me to move on. I am sure you can though? I would be happy to format and reload but if I can't access the drive then how can I do that?
I wanted to increase the RAM but all of the suggestions in the hand book do not relate to the layout of my laptop. The small access window on the bottom of the laptop will not allow enough access to the RAM? Poking about around the RAM might have induced this white screen lock out?
Thanks
Charlie

Hello Charlie
To be honest you have serious problem and I really do not believe you can solve it alone. It is not easy to say for sure why white display occurs at the boot up. In my opinion there can be several reasons responsible for this.
- Display (display cable, LCD electronic)
- as far as I know white screen occurs if FL inverter makes background light but there is no display signal it can be some defect on mainboard and there is no video signal
The best thing you can do is to contact authorized service provider. Let them check your notebook. They have special tools and there is no problem to find out why this happen.
Bye

My MacBook pro won't recognize hard drive I put in it. It boots only to a white screen unless I boot to my recovery USB. If I do that then I can select my USB and my external time machine drive in the disk utility, so no problems there. But what do you think it is? It won't recognize any hard drive I put in the machine, so might it be the sata cable?

Boot the Recvoery USB, use Disk Utility to select the internal drive makers namea and size on the left.
Now select erase and select the midde option and click erase, it will take a bit to complete but it's best for the drive.
Now select Partiton tab, click the big box and Options: GUID and then Format: OS X Extended journaled and click apply.
Quit and you should be able to install OS X now with your Apple ID and password.

  • White screen.. no boot!

I had my macbook running idley today with itunes and firefox running, when the software update program asked me that updates were available, and that they required a restart. So i clicked okay, restart now, and then entered my password.
Sure enough my macbook continued to restart, but on boot up, it gets to the white screen, and it stays there, i left it for a few hours, but nothing else happens.
If i hold down shift during boot up, i can successfully boot up in safe mode..
Whats going on? is there anyway i can uninstall the updates, so i can boot in regular mode?

    What did you update?
Start up from your install disk & repair the disk. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
    Click Repair Disk.
From reviewing these forums it is suggested that you repair permissions before and after updating.

  • White screen, does not boot

I have a 27" 2009 Imac that has been freezing up lately. Now I power up and I get a white screen with the apple logo and a progress bar. After about 1/3 of the progress bar is complete and maybe a minute or two, it powers off. I have unplugged everything and plugged the computer in again.
    Any ideas?

  • Photoshop CS3 white screen / freeze

had CS3 for over a year or so(legit on work computer) and this just started happening this week. at start up and/or after a few minutes in photoshop CS3 it freezes, goes to white screen and hangs and becomes useless. it starts off lagging like if i turn layers on and off takes a moment to change, if i mask something marquee slowly moves or stops moving altogether, flip between different workspaces, open and close files large and small, any of those it freezes and dies having to force it to close. i have photoshop CS2 also installed and it runs fine. everything else CS3 works (illustrator, acrobat etc.)
    things ive tried:
    1. reinstalling: ver10 of disk does this as well as 10.1 update
    2. delete preferences: from docs and settings as well as thru Photoshop
    3. cache purge
    4. yelling
    5. change scratch disk: i have 3 internal drives
    6. memory test
    7. turn anti virus on and off
    8. change page filing size
    help anyone?

I'd remove them. if they're critical, only put them back when you need them in another app, or get a font manager.
photoshop is very persnickety about fonts and will have problems with a font that's not exactly right, where another app might overlook an internal font error. my guess is there IS something funny about those fonts, but the other apps ignore the parts that are "broken".

  • Satellite M40X white screen appears

    Hello,
I am an advanced pc user and have used this Toshiba as my main computer for about 1.5years now. Today while in Windows XP I was extracting some files for school and I looked up @ the tv (was watching tv at the time, had the laptop on my lap well ventilated) and back down to the laptop and all I saw was this white screen and the hard drive activity / processor light was on constantly.
I put the hard drive area up to my ear and I didn't hear it vigorously writing to the drive so I figured it was the cpu doing something weird or windows acting up. So I turned it off by holding the power button for 7 seconds. I waited about a minute and turned it back on. To my surprise the white screen stayed. It was as if it wasn't even posting (to the bios..).
I have a password on it to make it harder for anyone who would steal it to get in. I entered it and hit enter thinking it was just some malfunction that I would have to live with, waited a bit, nothing. I didn't even get to the grub loader.. The hard drive had no activity; the light wasn't on as it usually is when Ubuntu or Xp boot up...
I looked a diagram on Toshiba's Canadian site (couldn't find a canadian signup page here so I signed up as a uk user..) and it said to type FN+F5 which I knew wouldn't work because I couldn't get any output on an external screen.
It didn't. I have taken out the battery and plugged it directly in to the charger. No change, taken out the hard drive; no change there either. I am going to leave the battery out for the rest of the night, but I don't think it will make a difference... I just put the battery back in as its been out for a good 40minutes now and no change..
My only guess is the gfx card finally went. It's got the Intel GMA900 or 950 (can't remember).
Anyone have any other theories? If so is it worth spending the money to fix it or should I just get all my data off of it and move on?
Thanks in advance for your help, JoeM

    Hey Joe..
They've changed the screen and the mother board... Now they tell me that my warranty has expired and I will have to pay for the repairs. I told them I bought this laptop under the good name of Toshiba, and that I hardly have used this product.
I asked them to refund or give me a discount on another product. I also said that I'm not going pay to repair it since they're repairs under warranty seem to be temporary at best. I know it doesn't hold much power to them but I belong to an organization that regularly purchases computers and laptops.

  • White Screen Freeze

    Hello.
At the moment I have a huge problem with my Intel iMac in the fact that it will not load from the main white start up screen.
I get the start up sound, then just a plain blank white screen.
Before this happened I was setting up Boot Camp, it resarted in Windows Install, but I cancelled the install and resarted the iMac, and the problem started then.
I have tryed pressing C at start up and get the folder with question mark showing up on the screen, but when I insert my original Tiger discs nothing happens.
Any help would be hugely appreciated.
    Thanks, Tom.

    Hi Tom
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Insert the Install Disk 1 and restart holding the Option key, then select the Install Disk to Startup from! Once booted select Disk Utility from the menu bar and check to see if the (Partition & Format) for the OS X on the HD are there and OK. If you see the OS X on Macintosh HD, select and repair it. If not then go back to the Install Option Install panel and do an Erase and Clean Install. When Installing Tiger both Disk are required and you will also need to install the second disk when prompted to do so.

  • White screen & won't boot after Time Machine restore 10.8.2

    Hello,
I know someone posted a similar issue but that it was related to a hardware failure.  Mine was not a hardware failure.
Just wanted to give an FYI to anyone who may run into this issue.  I recently restored my Macbook Pro from a Time Machine backup (10.8.2)
and I was getting a blank white screen at startup where the spinning line "|" would appear and then go away, and then come back, and then disappear...  Over and over.  Booting into single user mode resulted in the same issue.
I ended up re-installing Mountain Lion over itself and my machine booted sucessfully.  Did all the software updates and I'm back at 10.8.2 again.
This is just an FYI, something for you to try if you get the same error, hope this helps someone.

Startup command-s and at the prompt type reboot
    Then press return.

  • Toshiba White Screen Display on Boot Up

Hi, I own a Toshiba laptop Model P55-A5200.  About 3 or 4 months ago, I started getting white screen when I turn on the computer instead of being greeted with the Toshiba logo during the turn on process.  I would have to turn off the computer by pressing on the ON/ OFF button several times before the Toshiba logo will appear and the computer will boot up.  I recently updated to Windows 8.1 and also install the latest display driver and still getting the white screens during boot up.  Any help from anyone?  Or, do I just need to get a new computer?

It sounds like it's likely the hardware failing unfortunately.

  • White screen no matter boot mode (Safe, Recovery HD, Internet Recovery)

Ever since yesterday I've gotten the white screen of death. That means the only mode I was able to boot into was the single user mode, nothing else.
I was able to bring up the partition and was able to select the recovery HD but after the spinning gear disappeared I was left with a white screen, nothing responded, not even the caps lock. All I could do was turn it off and try something else.
    I have reset the NVRAM.
I have no clue what's going on and I don't have access to my Mac's install CD as I lost it when I moved.
    It's a late 2011 15 inch MacBook Pro with 10.7.5, if I remember correctly.

Hi ahriman222, have you found out what was causing the problem?
I've been having the same problem the whole morning although I just did Internet Recovery and just got a white screen but then I rebooted and suddenly my machine booted normally! I ran some disk utility tests and they all checked out fine.
Just to be more specific, I couldn't boot into any other mode earlier today other than single user and AHT (apple hardware test) mode. fsck reported no problem with the HDD and AHT both passed standard and extended tests.. so hopefully, it's a good indication that this isn't a hardware issue.
my problem is a bit more strange though because I was also getting these strange vertical pink stripes.. it's also odd that considering those stripes were present in AHT mode and yet AHT was not reporting any hardware problem.

    Hi there,
As soon a you start your mac, hold the option/alt key on your keyboard. You will then get a choice of drives to boot from. Choose 'Macintosh HD' and your computer should boot as usual, to Mac OS X.

  • Satellite A350 - White Screen Of Death

    Hi
I recently broke my screen in a temper tantrum and sent it in to Toshiba repair.
They replaced my screen. That was about a month ago.
I installed windows 7 3-4 days ago and it worked fine.
I opened my laptop one night to discover a blank white screen.
After turning it off and on, taking the battery out and in, the white screen still remained, then it randomly appeared with system restore options
I restored the system and applied a microsoft hotfix to counteract the supposed windows 7 error. it did not work.
The white screen appears when i put the laptop to sleep (shut the laptop) or shut it down.
The screen appeared again yesterday and i left it overnight hoping it would change.
My sister pulled out and put back in the battery and a screen appeared asking how you would like to start windows.
I started windows then reinstalled Windows Vista using a mirosoft setup disc.
After installing AVG antivirus it told me to restart.
I restarted the laptop and instead of the toshiba logo appearing the white screen of death appeared.
It stayed for 10-20 seconds then my laptop started.
I looked at this article (http://www.laptoprepair101.com/laptop/2008/04/13/laptop-lcd-screen-turned-white/) and it suggested the screen may have problems. Should i send it back in to Toshiba?
    Can someone supply further diagnosis?
    My specs:
Intel Core 2 Duo CPU P7450
    2.13ghz
    4.00GB RAM
    32 bit OS
So basically i have a random white screen when i restart, turn on or bring the laptop back from sleeping. whether it recovers is a strange thing with many factors. i don't think its my OS because it happens on Vista and Windows 7
please help as much as you can. i don't wan't to take it in for repair as it may cost money

The screen has a 2 month warranty from the repair and the laptop still has half a year of general warranty. when the white screen appears i tried using HDMI to connect it to a TV and there was no change. Could it be due to the fact i upgraded to Windows 7? if so will they still charge me? is there any test i can do to check if it is a Hardware issue or a screen problem?
i shut the laptop for a while yesterday and my brother opened it to see the white screen. i grabbed the right side of the screen and pushed it back and the logon screen came up. what would that suggest?
    thanks for the help

  • White screen freeze problem

    Hi,
I recently had some problems with my macbookpro 13inch
When my external monitor is connected to my macbookpro it will sometimes after a while suddenly switch to a white screen (macbook itself + external monitor) after this i can't do anything else but reboot my laptop and loose all of my progress i had made on some projects.
a different problem is that on websites it sometimes just randomly starts selecting text and i can do nothing about it.
does anyone know what to do with these problems? a little help would be usefull.
i hope this thread is in the right place i'm new here, didn't find a more appropriate folder.
    grtz
    wouter

    Goglangigo,
    Many thanks for the response.
Indeed, at Channels, alpha is ticked.
However the sub-menu is in grey or inactive, inaccessible mode, so I can't change it to RGB... can't think why it is inactive.
I'm certain I didn't have this problem a couple of days ago and am also certain that I didn't go to that part of the View menu.
So, I guess I must have tripped another choice elsewhere. Inadvertently.
I've gone through other projects and the problem is the same.
    Any other answers?
    Thanks again.

  • QuickTime White screen / Freeze only on .wmv saved as .mov

I had a normal habit of downloading .wmv files, playing them and then saving them as .mov files using QuickTime Pro. Since the QuickTime 7.1.6 release I have been doing the same practice without any problems. I still download (.wmv), play and save as .mov files. Works fine... Recently I went back to play one of my pre-QT 7.1.6 .mov files and all that I got was a white screen, no audio and after the timeline moved for a few seconds, QuickTime froze. Had to force quit. Nothing else has changed except for applying the update and now none of my pre-QT 7.1.6 files that I had saved in this manner will play. Any ideas...
