Satellite A660-149 - Tosh utility disappeared!

Would someone pl. help me trace the following utility which I've had till recently on my brand new Satellite A660-149 but now it's gone (maybe through some fault of mine).
It took the form of a rectangle that would hide at the edge of the screen and would (inconveniently, most of the time) pop out whenever the cursor hit its outline. One of its 3 buttons caused a box to appear where you could select one of various pre-set options for the display according to ambient lighting, one of these options being user defined.
I found this utility most useful for quickly changing the display adjustments whenever I had to move my laptop around.
I hardly had time to look into what this utility was called and where it was residing, before I lost it without trace.
A prize to anyone who helps me rediscover it ?!

How kind not having given up on me, Xardas! :)
I'm having the same results as you, with Flash Cards. As a novice I haven't looked into these things properly yet, but it seems to me the tool I'm after isn't related to Flash Cards. The closest I could maybe describe it is: a control for ambient light. BTW I don't seem to have a functioning Ambient Light Sensor, i.e. the button next to the Power button (numbered 13 in the Manual) - it must've been disabled for my model. The Manual says: *The Ambient Light Sensor automotically adjusts picture & contrast etc etc. By utilizing up to 8 different contrast settings, you will see the best picture possible in any room environment.* Well, I wonder: the utility I'm after with its (as far as I remember) 8+ lighting presets, must've been a kind of compensation/replacement for the missing automatic Ambient Light Sensor. As I said, it took the form of a (maybe) 4cm x 1cm rectangle hiding at the edge of the screen.

  • Need Toshiba tools and utilities for my Satellite A660-149

    Hi friends
I have formatted my Toshiba Satellite A660-149 and I didnt create recovery CD/DVD.
I have installed Windows 7 but now thing is that I dont have any of Toshiba features like eco utility, HDD protection, face recognition, NVIDIA graphic controller.
Please suggest me what should I do now....& where I can get this software.

    Hi friend ;)
All necessary drivers and Toshiba specific tools and utilities you can find on Toshiba support page under http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com > Support & Downloads Support homepage.
At the bottom of this page you will see option Driver download.
Go there, choose your notebook model and you will find all you need.
Of course, there you will find stuff for supported OS version only.
    Good luck

  • Satellite A660-149 - Does it have a 3D video card?

My notebook has been a surprise gift for me - day after day I'm now discovering its many wonderful features. A bit of a struggle though 'cos I'm far from being well versed in computing.
One thing I'm uncertain about is this: Is my NVidia GeForce a 3d video card? I 'd better be sure because a couple of the drivers Toshiba Tempro suggests I install come with the warning: *This driver is only for the model with the nVidia 3D video card*. Is anyone around who can confirm the Satellite A660-149 does have a 3d video card?

Thank you, folks, for helping me clarify my very hazy ideas on this subject. Then this screen with 1366x768 res/ and 60 hz refresh rate is for sure not up to reproducing 3d, but Xardas must be right in thinking the A660 may support 3D on an external monitor which would explain why the Toshiba utility advises on the installation of a 3d driver for the A660 series. Oh well, I won't bother with 3d one way or another, enough complications in life as it is at the moment. Cheers all. :)

  • Satellite A660-149 stuck on 'resuming from S4 State'

Hi guys, I have a problem with my laptop where is says 'The system is resuming from S4 State', I know this means waking up from hibernation, but the thing is I've left it all night like this and it hasn't changed still saying the same thing. Is there anything I can do to fix it?

Thanks for feedback buddy... its pity that mentioned workaround did not help you.
I would recommend you trying to recover the notebook using the Toshiba recovery disk.
After fresh OS recovery, check the available BIOS versions on Toshiba EU driver page.
In case newer BIOS version was released for your notebook model, follow with BIOS update.
The hibernation issues can be related to system problems and in such case the recovery procedure or BIOS update might be helpful.

  • 'A problem with the cooling system' error message on Satellite A660

    Hi all,
Hope I can get some help here. I've had about 5 HP laptops after all of them had problems and faults. I got sick of them and therefore got a refund and bought a high spec A660-1FH.
The A660 has been a great laptop for two days until yesterday when I started getting a warning message saying 'A problem with the cooling system has been detected. Please turn off the computer immediately, and return it for service'.
The cpu fan works fine as you can here it spinning and the temperature of the i5-460m processor is around 40 degrees for both cores - which seems normal to me. I've noted that it happens only when running on battery and if you switch from eco utility to power saver mode. Its fine when running on the 'balanced' power setting. The fan is louder before when this message appears.
As its under 28 days my retailer swapped it for a brand new one straight away. Got the new one home, and the same message appears again. Has anyone else experienced this. As two laptops have had this, I'm wondering if this is normal for the A660 series laptop or if there is really a hardware issue?!
I have tried to upgrade eco utility and the bios of the laptop but both are the latest versions. Can anyone help or share if they experience a similar issue with their laptop?
    Thanks

In front of me I have Satellite A660-13Q (PSAW3E) and I have it about 6 weeks now. It runs almost 10 hours daily and until now I didnt notice such message or anything else that can be suspect for hardware functionality.
I really dont know why this happen on your notebook and dont think there is anything you can do about it.
I would exchange it again. What you can also try is to contact nearest Toshiba service. Make a call, explain the situation and ask if they can help you with this.

  • Satellite A660 - Will not boot up and HDD boot fail

    Hi,
    firstly thanks for your time.
    Model: Satellite A660 (PSAW3A-07U00R)
The problem started yesterday, the computer was going slow as an application closed, so I held the off button untill the pc turned off. When I restarded the laptop it went to a screen saying: Start windows normally or repair Windows (recomended)
When started normally it just hangs at a blank screen, the repair Windows recommends a system restore to earlier point which didnt work. As it just hangs again. I tried pressing F8 and starting in safe mode but again it just hangs. Then after a few times trying safe mode and another system restore the computer then hangs when I press F8. After this the computer goes past the Toshiba logo screen with F2 and F12 options (which both still work), and then it comes up boot failed then goes blank and comes with boot failed bootfailed with some numbers and letters, then it goes to a small box titled boot menu with 4 options. These are
    HDD/SSD Toshiba MK6465GSX
    CD/DVD MAT****ABD-CMB UJ141ES
    FDD
    LAN
If I press ESC it goes through the bootfailed loop and ends up at same screen, if I press enter on "HDD/SSD Toshiba MK6465GSX" then it quickly comes back to screen and at the bottom it says [HDD/SSD Toshiba MK6465GSX] is failed.
I dont understand why it got worse over time. Can anyone think of why this has happend and more importantly how can I get my pc working again? Note: holding 0 then starting does nothing for me atm
    regards, Matthew

All you people looking here on this dead thread.....
Toshiba A660 laptops are renowned for having hard drive fails and boot up problems after grinding to a halt.
My solution (after losing 3 hard drives [and a terabyte of family treasured times]) is the following.
Use MALWAREBYTES (free download and use for 28 days)
Scan and fix. Mine found over 300 trojans that 2013 Norton 360 could not find.
    Re-boot into safe mode.
    SCAN again.
Re-boot and empty the malwarebytes repair files it retains...
Run Norton/McAfee (whichever you have) and you should still have no issues.
    Make a back-up repair disc. Ooooops......no you cant...........at least my laptop can`t.
    I don`t know why.....
Tell me tosh..... why does windows x64 refuse to allow me to make a system boot disc (even though the laptop is all driver updated and Windows updated)?
Uninstall MalwareBytes when Norton/McAfee tells you there will be a conflict between the two programs.
It tells you to re-boot after uninstalling it.
Then when it re-boots you get a black screen. You cannot even get to bios. You think ytour laptop is turned into a brick frisbee. You pull out the battery in frustration after five minutes.
You replace and re-boot....but again you get no bios or boot up.... you think its destroyed the Bios or graphics somehow....youo can hear the hard-drive but you have no clue whats going on..
Around this time you shake the laptop in frustration.....
    Calm down.
Switch on and leave FIFTEEN MINUTES....Ten of which will be a Black nothing screen with maybe a single white underscore line in the top left corner.LEAVE IT ALONE.
Make a sunday dinner for ten people....When you go back to the computer it will be up and running.
When you re-boot again, it will be dead black for five minutes...then boots up... you still think it has a problem... LEAVE IT.
When you reboot again it should work perfect (assuming you have not been overheating it by using it on a cushion on your lap and overheating the insides [use a laptop fan tray]) if you have not shaken your hard drive or caused scrambled damage by pulling the power fifty times like some people do.
I have lost three hard drives and thousands of Gigabytes of treasured family memories discovering the secret the hard way.
    Enjoy.
Buy a different brand next time.
ALL Windows system files should be on a SWITCHED (to update) version of Windows.
Spinning drives should be for Data only.

  • Satellite A660 - USB boot problems after BIOS update

    Hello,
I own a Toshiba Satellite A660 and recently have update the BIOS to the latest version (1.80). Since then the notebook will freeze on the boot screen (the one with the Toshiba logo) whenever a USB flash memory is attached.
It works without the flash memory connected and also if I connect it after I enter the boot menu or the BIOS setup. I can even boot from it like this.
As far as I am concerned this is a serious regression. Is there any way I can downgrade the BIOS version, or any other way to fix this issue ? I rely heavily on external USB drives.
    Regards,
    Claudiu.

I too am having problems with my A660 since upgrading to 1.80 bios - the HDD/SD utility, the pc health monitor and half the other toshiba utilities no longer work because they can't recognize the bios and actually tell me this... I get an error message telling me ''can't get bios type''...
On top of this I get the boot problem as well - I have to unplug half of my USB devices to get the laptop to boot properly...
And now - one month into owning my new A660 - after a hard drive failure, a problem with the Broadcom internal wireless adaptor I now have the internal TV tuner no longer working and have no idea how to fix it...
My gut feeling is that the sooner I can downgrade to the original factory bios the BETTER - and wait for another bios update to come along that is not faulty/buggy...
HOPE someone can help me with this...
    John.

  • Satellite A660: HW setup. Error1316 Network error occured

I have an annoying problem on my Satellite A660 that I cant fix. I have lost the use of my function keys as well as the flash card function. It seems to be related to the HW setup utility which wont open.
When I click on the icon this message comes up This application has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. I have tried to reinstall Hwsetup but it will not do so either by reinstallation or uninstallation and this message appears, T/ hw setup. Error1316 Network error occured while attempting to read from C. \Windows\installer\Toshiba Hardware Setup.msi
Error 1603 fatal error. Consult windows installer help (msi.chm) or MSDN for more info.
I have downloaded a fresh copy of Hwsetup but still no change. I have also tried to restore from much earlier restore points but again nothing changes. Would very much appreciate any advice, cheers Jeff

    Hi
    > Have even tried deleting HWsetup from Program files then doing ccleaner then trying to install hwsetup again but the installation package will only ask me if I wish to uninstall it not reinstall it even though its not on the hard disc,
This means that there is still some garbage of the HWsetup in the registry.
What to say; I use CCLeaner also and the CCleaner contains a option which helps to uninstall the installed applications too.
You should check this you should also clean the registry several times.
I think registry still contains a lot trance of HWsetup and its necessary to run CCleaner (registry cleaning) more than one time.
Otherwise you will need to delete the HWSetup traces manually but this is risky because you could damage the registry which means that the OS would not function properly.
The last resort would be new system recovery but I dont know if its a option for you

  • Help needed with system recovery Satellite L300-149

    Hi
    We have a Satellite L300-149.
Was running really slowly so wanted to reset it to factory settings.
Did the 'press F12 when starting, put disk in' etc etc BUT have a horrible feeling that I put a disk in that actually belonged to a different Toshiba we used to use a U300.
The 'give away' was that the user manual for the U300 is now on the desktop on the Satellite :-/
I hoped that this wouldn't be a major problem BUT the F8 key has now disappeared making it impossible to connect to the internet.
I looked online and read that the L300 sometimes doesn't come with a disk as the info is kept on a separate part of the hard drive so hoped I could reset it back to factory settings again but when I click F2 on start up and go to the option to restore it, noting happens.
    Can anyone please help??????

    Hi
    Forget the HDD recovery now
You have recovered the system using another disk and this has deleted the HDD recovery image files. So this option is NOT possible!
You are right the L300 and all other notebooks are not delivered with Recovery disks.
The recovery disk has to be created using the preinstalled software called Recovery Disk Creator. But this is also NOT possible because you removed the preinstalled system and the files which are needed for such recovery disk are not available anymore!
But if everything work properly except of the WLan FN + F8 key, then I would recommend to install only the Wlan driver. I think the key does not work because the right WLan driver is not installed.
I think the Satellite L300-149 supports the Wlan Realtek RTL8187B chip.
So install the right Wlan driver which you can find here:

  • Re: Satellite A660 - Toshiba Utilities - Web Camera Application missing

I have a new Satellite A660 with inbuiilt web camera, but there is no Toshiba software (as stated in the Manual) to run the web camera, nor the face recognition software.
I havent checked anything else yet but not in Programs directory and nowhere on the Start menu.
Any help as to where to find the software ?

I agree with Paolo30, if the webcam is available on this notebook, then an right software should be installed as well. Go to the Toshiba driver page and check for your model:
    http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/download_drivers_bios.jsp
    [Australian Toshiba Driver Page|http://www.mytoshiba.com.au/support]
However, on my laptop I haven't installed any Toshiba webcam utility myself, Windows made it by default. And it runs..... Maybe, it will work better with original Toshiba driver but I don't use webcam at all.

  • Satellite A660 - Not finding external DVD drive

Hey guys. Newbie posting out of total desperation and needing help! I have posted in other forums with no luck. I bought a Samsung SH-D162D DVD Drive in a USB enclosure to connect to my Satellite A660 via USB.
I cannot get Windows 7 to find it! When I plug in the USB cable the balloon comes up to say it has been installed (sometimes), I can see it on for about 1 or 2 minutes then it drops off. It isnt listed in my hardware or anything. Its not found in Disk Management or My Devices so it isnt a case of changing the drive letter - I cant find the drive to change it. I have also tried to find the upper and lower settings in regedit. Couldnt find them so couldnt delete them as advised in other posts of this nature.
It is set to master, the IDE connector and power connectors are fine. Its gotta be a Windows 7 problem cause it does show up very breifly. In the minute or 2 its there I cant do anything with it. It just hangs although it will open and close. Ive googled it and cant find anything. Mainly registry issues but they didnt help.
Ive also connected it up to another laptop with XP and had no problems so I know the DVD Rom works fine and all the cables are ok. Ive tried in all 4 USB ports on my laptop and also turned off all energy settings. All with no luck. And I also have every Windows 7 update.
Heres exactly what happens from power off on the enclosure.
1 - I plug in the USB lead then turn on power to the enclosure.
2 - I quickly go to Start, and I can see the DVD Rom drive E next to my laptops dvd rom.
3 - The green bar at the top starts filling up from left to right and gets about half way then suddenly the DVD Rom icon disappears and so does the green bar.
4 - It then flashes up under the laptops DVD Rom icon with a Local Disk drive E but only for a split second.
5 - Sometimes a balloon comes up saying installing device, then device successfully installed...but not every time.
And thats it. I'm at a total loss and cant work it out, so any help is really appreciated!

    Hi Smee,
So if you have already connected the external drive to another computer and this worked properly, it seems to be a driver or compatibility issue between your external DVD drive and and your Satellite A660
It will be connected to USB port so have you tried to remove all USB ports from device manager? After this you should restart your computer and the USB ports will be recognized from device manager automatically. Furthermore I would also try updating the chipset driver. Newest version you can download on official Toshiba website:
    http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com > Support & Downloads > Download Drivers
Have you also tested other devices on your A660 if they work properly?

  • Satellite A660-11M - Power Saver does not work

    I have a Satellite A660-11M and I work on Windows 7 Ultimate
The problem is that I have download all drivers and updates but the toshiba power saver does not work its installed with no error and TPSLaunch (green icon) does not open when I click on it and no icon I found in the control panel for the program afterIi install all the Value Added Package!

    Hi buddy,
    Wait a moment, please.
Im a little bit confused about your posting First you write about Power Saver and then about green icon Which one you mean exactly and whats the problem?
If you mean Eco mode you have to install Eco Utility from official Toshiba website.

  • Satellite A660 keeps crashing

My Tosh Satellite A660-11M PSAW3E (Windows 7 Ultimate) was working fine until I installed the MS March 2012 security updates which included the latest update for MS Office Pro 2007. After the install it immediately started crashing soon after boot up and the Action Centre kept saying that a new power driver was available.
I used System Restore to restore back to just before the updates and that seemed to help - the Action Centre said that there was no problems - and the system seemed to be OK. Some of the MS Mar 2012 updates reinstalled and the crashing problem returned.
I used System Restore again to go back to the pre update state. However despite returning to pre update state and manually uninstalling the Office Pro 2007 update, my A660 continues to suddenly crash at frequent but different intervals - some times it is OK for an hour or 2 and other times it crashes within minutes of boot up.
Any ideas and help would be very welcome as I am tearing my hair out over this.

    Hi Tks for replying.
No I have not done either the HDD recovery process or used a Recovery Disk. I have just tried to get the system back to the pre update state using Windows 7 Ultimate System Restore.
I feel I cannot risk a full recovery situation until I have at least backed up my valuable files (loads & loads of them and I'm frantically doing that now) to a portable drive as I cannot afford to lose them. Although I do normal backups I am at the moment about 1000km away from my normal base where my usual backup system & past backups are.
The system has now run for over an hour, after 2 crashes in quick succession without a problem, but I feel it could give up at any time.
When I can I will try reverting to factory settings but at the moment I cannot take the risk of screwing up the laptop and losing data & programs.
I do not know for certain if the MS updates (all or one) are responsible but the timing between "no problems" & "crashing" causes suspicion that they may have a hand in the problem.

  • Satellite A660-158 and FN Key functionality

Satellite A660-158 model. Where to me to find the utility for Fn key?
I haven't found this utility in drivers. That I displayed what Fn buttons I push.
    Thankful in advance.

    > Let's finish this subject about different views on life.
This is good. :) Obviously you have enough time to play with all this. Fact is that drivers offered for new machine are absolutely the same as drivers you got with recovery image.
With other words I think youve spent your time for .... nothing.
Anyway, install VAP again and hopefully FN will work well.

  • Satellite A660-10X - Freezes many times

    Hello
A few months ago I bought Satellite A660-10x. On original installed system it freezed one time (I used laptop maybe one hour) but I thought it was some accident or maybe something was configured improperly. Then I installed clear system (Windows 7 Home Premium) from Microsoft disc and installed only necessary drivers but the problem occurred again. At the first moment I thought that it happen only when I don't click or move mouse for above 1 minute but at the moment the problem also appears when I click or write something. I use this laptop very rarely but as you can imagine it's very annoying and it makes that I cannot trust this laptop and data on it. Maybe you know what can cause the problem or maybe some new drivers were published to remove this issue?
I read that not only I have the same problem.
    Best regards

    Hi machanic12,
    > The amount of bloatware included with the Toshiba Recovery Image is astonishing.
What bloatware you mean? Do you think that any drivers or important software like Value Added Package is bloatware? Thats wrong!
As you can see in other postings here in forum I use Satellite A660 for 3 months now with preinstalled Windows 7 from Toshiba. Never did a new installation as yet because the factory settings work perfect.
Ok, if you dont like McAfee security software or trial software of Office for example you can simply remove it in control panel > Add/Remove programs. I did the same, just for information.
But the most installed software is necessary and really nice, like Eco Utility. It helps me to save a lot of energy and battery power. Furthermore ConfigFree is also nice WiFi tool that I always use and other Toshiba Utilites like PC Health Monitor are nice to check the fan activity, temperatures, etc.
I must say I dont have any performance problems. Windows starts pretty fast, no problems with Photoshop or VMware. Also my games run well.
Otherwise I agree with your posting running a Memtest and update BIOS version. Latest version (1.80-WIN) I have installed and no problems. :)
