Satellite A660-18N bootmng is missing

Hi , I have a Sateillite A660-18N i had some problems before such as freezing but under warranty and always been fixed . I have had no problems for months and now my warranty has run out and my computer complety froze and i turned it on and it said "Bootmng is missing" this happens straight away .
It has a build in partition to do a full recovery but the error happens straight away before i can press the key to reset the laptop. The laptop came with no recovery disks as there is a built in option.
Any advice or any help getting me a recovery disk for windows 7 is very welcome

Hi
So you are not able to repair the OS using the option by pressing F8 and then choosing Repair my Computer?
Hmm in such case you have to install the OS from Recovery disk.
Did you create such disk in the past?
If not then you could order this here:

  • Need to remove password on Satellite A660-18N

    Hi there,
I have problem with an access to my laptop Satellite A660-18N, it is asking for the password, that i do not remember (or know). I bought it in UK back in 2010, since then it is the first time i am dealing with this problem. Is there any possibility to obtain this password remotely, because i am afraid there is no toshiba service center in a town (or nearby), where i am located now.
Any advice that helps to solve this issue is highly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

I presume you are writing about BIOS password.
This password can be removed by authorized service provider only so any kind of remote fix is not possible.
BIOS password is very important security feature and such issues must be handled very carefully.

There you can find addresses and phone numbers of all ASPs in your country.

  • Satellite A660-18N - Powers off after waking from sleep mode

My Satellite A660-18N powers off 2-3 seconds after waking from sleep mode. I upgraded the memory from 4GB to 8GB, using Crucial's website, so I know it's compatible. BIOS is updated to 2.00.
Not sure what to do, how can I fix this without turning off Sleep mode completely?

    Hello
    >Currently I've turned off sleep mode altogether. I've also reset the BIOS settings from the boot menu but it hasn't fixed the problem
And why you dont test it with pretested memory modules from an authorized service provider? The part number for such RAM is PA3677U-1M4G. Its one 4GB DDR3-1066 MHz memory module.
Furthermore it would be interesting to know who says that Crucial memory is compatible Maybe its compatible to other Toshiba notebooks but fact is you have problems after waking from sleep mode and this happens only with Crucial memory and not with preinstalled modules.
I dont think somebody here can provide you a solution for this because its just a compatibility issue and its user to user forum only.

  • Satellite A660-18N hanging and needs hard reboot

My Satellite A660-18N hangs every other day about 2/3 times. I cannot press ctrl + alt + del and the mouse does not move. I have to hold down the power button to reboot it manually. It started about 2 weeks after I got it which was in September. I watch a lot of videos online (and offline) and usually after the screen freezes/hangs, the audio continues and stretches. I thought that this was a problem with IE8 so I switched to Google Chrome but this still continues. This problem also occurs offline. Also, after my laptop hangs, the fan speeds up so I thought it was an overheating problem. I bought a cooling mat a few days ago and the system still hangs. I'm not sure what to do now, can anyone help?
    Intel core i7 q740 @ 1.73Ghz
    4.00GB ram
    64-bit OS
    Windows 7
Nvidia Geforce 310M 512MB dedicated video memory

I'm having the same problem as the OP, with my A660-11M.
At the moment the display is freezing a few times every day and it's been like this for the last week. Before that, (almost) no problems for a few months after having similar problems.
So, it seems to be coming in bursts which is, needless to say, bizarre.
I too experiences it mainly while watching video (and similarly the audio would continue after the freeze) so I disabled Hardware Acceleration in the FlashPlayer settings after reading this post:
    http://forums.toshiba.com/t5/Video-Display/Toshiba-A660-Screen-Freeze/td-p/189944
    But this didn't help.
Then I thought it might be Chrome, so I switched to Firefox 4.0.1 but this didn't help either.
Now, I have disabled the Flash plugin to see if that works - too early to say so far.
BTW, these days the crashing is occuring mostly when I am NOT playing video - although I don't play much video anyway.

  • Satellite A660-18N freezes randomly

My Satellite A660-18N freezes randomly mostly when I'm playing games or watching video.
Also sometimes when I'm just moving the mouse. It does it about 1-2 times a week/2weeks. When it happens the display freezes but the audio plays on for a while and doesn't react to any keypress so I have to manually turn it off and on.
I don't think it's a graphic card overheating issue as it sometimes happens just a few minutes after I turn on my laptop plus I use a cooler pad as well.

    Hi
This happens sometimes this means that you cannot replicate this and this means that its really difficult to say what could cause this.
Theoretically it could be just a software issue. Maybe only the registry is corrupt.
In such case the new OS installation should be done.
Of course it could be also related to memory: so test the RAM using some tools like mem86+ or similar.
Check also the HDD; for that you can use the tool called Drive Fitness Test.

  • Satellite A660-18N - Screen it too bright so how to update the BIOS?

Hi guys, I need your help with this laptop because it is giving me a lot of problems.
I have changed the screen of this Satellite A660-18N because the one that was fitted in was damaged. I have installed it and is working fine but I'm having problems with the brightness. When I click - on the brightness it goes up and when I click + it goes down. It's way too bright and want to do something to fix it.
Does the bios help to fix this problem and how do I flash the BIOS on these laptops? I did flash BIOS on desktop pc but on this I can't see any way of doing it. Is there any way of fixing the screen without changing the BIOS? Some people said that I have to flash the BIOS because new screens wont work 100% with old BIOS.
    Please help
    Thank you

Thank you very much Xardas for your reply.
It is 3rd party screen. I bought it from ebay. They said that it's original. It says made from Samsung. The original one was also made from samsung. The guys from Toshiba said that you might have to update bios so that it will accept other screens. I told them which one I bought and they did confirm that it should work fine.
I wanted to flash the bios with the latest bios and maybe it could work fine. I just don't know how to do it? I did create a bootable usb and placed the bios in it but don't know the command to flash it. I did go in bios but did not find anything that would be helpful to flash.
I also was thinking to use some kind of software that makes it little bit darker. It's way too bright. My eyes hurt to use it. I always have to use sunglasses.
If you know anything it really would be helpful.
    Thank you

  • Turn on wireless capability - Satellite A660 - 18N

    Toshiba Satellite A660 - 18N
I have used this laptop to connect to the internet via a wireless connection since I purchased the unit some 3 months ago.
Just over a week ago the wireless connection dropped out and I have not been able to reconnect via a wireless connection, cable connection is okay.
When I check to see what the problem is the dialogue ' Wireless communication is disalbled - Please turn on the wireless communication switch'. Another dialogue box also comes up when I trouble shoot elsewhere 'Turn on wireless capability use the switch on the front or side of the computer or function keys if available to enable wireless capability on this computer'.
I have tried FN with F8 - but it states turn on the wireless communication switch - as far as I am aware there is no manual switch for switching wireless on/off?
Any help would be fantastic as this has become a pain.
    Many thanks.

    Hi
For A660 series make sure that the wireless button is lit up on the media controllers (the one across the top) if it doesn't stay lit up, try to uninstall the TVAP - Toshiba value added package on the control panel, reinstall it using TOSAPINS - Toshiba application installer (go on mytoshiba folder and look for toshiba application installer), restart the laptop. Try to Fn + F8, make sure that the wireless is on and try to connect to your network
If still not working, try to check the version of your driver. try to uninstall/reinstall, if not go ahead and update the driver.
Check also if there's an update for the BIOS
If it can detect the the network but cannot browse the internet try the following:
Power cycle. (Shut down the laptop, disconnect the charger and turn it over and remove the battery. Leave the laptop for 20 secs and put the battery back)
Boot on safe mode with networking (Tap F8 while turning on the laptop). On advanced boot option select safe mode with networking.
Try to connect, wired and wireless -- if you can connect either with wired or wireless
Try to go on command prompt (start, on search programs and files time in 'cmd' ) type in 'ping www.google.com' if you can get 4 replies and 0 lost. the problem is on the security settings. try to disable your firewall.
If still not working do the system recovery.

  • Satellite A660-18N - Solution for disabled WLAN switch

I have at last solved this annoying issue, my laptop is a Satellite A660-18N
Out of the box it just would not connect to wireless networking. With the Fn-F8 key combination reporting: "Wireless communitcation is disabled, please turn on the wireless communication switch"
Of course there is no such switch, just the FN-F8 Combination key press. Having tried various forums, and tech support, I solved the problem my self.
    The solution is:
Go to the folder on your c drive "Program files\Toshiba\TBS. Then scroll down the list of program files and double click on the file named TBSWireless.exe and hey presto, the wireless communication will turn on (Amber Light will come on on the front bottom right panel of the computer). From now on the FN-F8 Key combination will turn it on and of.
    Bye all

    Absolutely great job, Fin_1!
Thank you for this solution but I must say I didnt notice this problem on my Satellite A660 but it could be useful for other A660 owners :)

  • Satellite A660-18N won't shut down

When I close my laptop it will stay running and the fan will still be as loud as it was before, but when i open it again the screen will be black and I need to reboot it.
I also cannot shut it down normally- it will stay at the "shutting down" screen and eventually bluescreen. Also when I unplug my mouse during use it will not work when I plug it back in again.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I would like to know since when you have noticed such behaviour?
When the notebook was delivered it had clean preinstalled operating system and I cannot imagine described issue happen from day one. It is not easy to say why this happen but I can imagine some running process blocks your notebook and it cannot switch down properly.
Have you installed some additional software?
Before you try to switch off your notebook open task manager and try to close some running processes related to different applications that run in the background (if you have installed some of them).

  • Satellite A660 Win7 action centre - Power management system is missing driver

I replaced the battery on my A660-15J Toshiba laptop a few months back with the high capacity battery and now the win 7 action center keeps popping up with the message that I need to download and install the missing power management system driver.
The power supply was not replaced at all, nothing has changed, other than the battery.
The charge light on the laptop functions as it did before the battery change.
It comes on and is red, and after a couple of hours it goes white and the battery level shows it is at 100%
The problem is that windows 7 action center says that it is missing an ACER driver??? -> WTF???
The link that it gives to download it from DOES NOT WORK
It seems strange to me that the link that windows provides its to an acer website, but since manufacturers use parts from others manufacturers it does not surprise me at all.
I just want clarification and confirmation of what I need to do here, and why the toshiba service center is not showing this update???
I read that BIOS update can resolve this issue, however there is NO bios update for my laptop.
I have also contacted MICRO$OFT but I'm still awaiting a reply from them.
I have also read other posts on various toshiba forums that relate to this same problem but they usually say that model is not supported by toshiba in that country....
I clicked the link to this forum directly from the Toshiba Australia website, so please don't tell me that my model is not supported on this Toshiba Europe forum!
    The exact message:
Download and install the driver for your power management system
Your power management system is missing a driver.
Follow these steps to solve this problem:
Tap or click to download the driver from the A+c+e+r Corporation website
Download and extract the driver files
Tap or click Save or Save as, and then save the file to your desktop. If you cant choose where to save the file, youll need to find it and copy it to your desktop. When you download files, most web browsers save them to the Downloads folder on your computer.

    > I replaced the battery on my A660-15J Toshiba laptop a few months back with the high capacity battery and now the win 7 action center keeps popping up with the message that I need to download and install the missing power management system driver.
Possibly this is the problem. Is the new battery fully compatible?
Satellite A660/15J is an Australian notebook model.
Here I found some accessories for this model:
    http://www.mytoshiba.com.au/products/computers/satellite/a660/psaw3a-15j06t/accessories
    The compatible battery are:

    Toshiba Battery Pack (6 Cell / 5600mAh / Li-Ion / 10.8V) PA3818U-1BRS

  • Satellite A660-047 - Missing drivers for WAN Miniport

    I have a Toshiba Satellite A660-047 PSAW3C-047017 running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.
I just downloaded the ISO for Norton Ghost 15, created the installation CD, installed Ghost, and ran the driver validation from the installation CD. I got the following message:
    > The following devices do not have drivers in the Symantec Recovery Disk.
    >
    > WAN Miniport (IKEv2)
    >
    > A detailed information about these devices is given below

    > Hardware Id : ms_agilevpnminiport
    > Hardware Id : MS_AgileVpnMiniport
From a bit of googling, it seems it is more of a higher level interface than an actual hardware device. I'm not really sure what it's used for, or how likely I will miss it in the event of a recovery. Is this something I should spend time worrying about right away?
The thread http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-hardware/wan-miniport-sstp-driver-problem/f83493ae-8127-47dd-a7b7-7e5b3460b6a6 says it's not needed in "most cases" but I was wondering if any exceptions might be encountered during recovery (when I would like to use WiFi to surf and restore my system to non-factory state, as well as to do diagnostics on a possibly bad HDD).

By the way, would anyone know where to get the driver? I would prefer to get it from a Toshiba or Microsoft site, but the laptop driver download page for my model at Toshiba Canada doesn't list anything containing "wan" or "miniport".
The thread http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itpronetworking/thread/316bec01-01c4-433a-95cb-a0b5b2359beb how to transplant the relevant part of the registry, but I would like to avoid mucking with the registry if possible. I would feel much more confident about having a driver that can be installed by more conventional means (if there is such a thing).

  • Re: Satellite A660 - Toshiba Utilities - Web Camera Application missing

I have a new Satellite A660 with inbuiilt web camera, but there is no Toshiba software (as stated in the Manual) to run the web camera, nor the face recognition software.
I havent checked anything else yet but not in Programs directory and nowhere on the Start menu.
Any help as to where to find the software ?

I agree with Paolo30, if the webcam is available on this notebook, then an right software should be installed as well. Go to the Toshiba driver page and check for your model:
    http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/download_drivers_bios.jsp
    [Australian Toshiba Driver Page|http://www.mytoshiba.com.au/support]
However, on my laptop I haven't installed any Toshiba webcam utility myself, Windows made it by default. And it runs..... Maybe, it will work better with original Toshiba driver but I don't use webcam at all.

  • Satellite A660 - 3D DVD software runs out of date or is secretly altered

Whats going on; why do I get lynched to pay an additional $59 for software to make my Satellite 3D work?
    Ok.
This probably sounds nuts; but my Toshiba Blu-Ray DVD software seems to have a DVD/Blu-ray prevention program in it. Preventing 3D and smaller issues.
It has been out of whack since I updated the software on the Toshiba site and when I updated the nVidia GTS 350M drivers.
That may be co-incidental to the problems which began in previous month/s; as I don`t always play discs on this laptop; so pinning a date when it went pear-shaped is harder.
But, after going through a nightmare (of not working on DVD or Blu-Ray on half my discs for months now); I installed the latest TRIAL ($59) Corel WinDVD 11 Pro player and everything (including 3D) works perfect again. But for 30 days only; until/unless I`m robbed of $59 additional that is.
    The problem is/was;-
3D only worked on half of my Blu-Ray 3D discs using pre-installed (and later updated) Toshiba COREL WinDVD media PLAYER. Sometimes it only played 3D side by side; 2 images. No 3D. Some Blu-Ray 3D discs were fine ODDLY. Region code not an issue.
Toshiba DVD 3D player/upconvertor program was the worst (not the SD version, I dont use).
Toshiba (HD) 3D player would not recognise half of my Blu-ray 3D laptop disc drive content. "DVD drive not recognised" error message.
Toshiba DVD player itself would not upconvert any normal DVD to 3D.
Toshiba DVD player would only play NORMAL 2D when running upconvert (no 3D).
Toshiba DVD player would only play HALF-SPEED DVD when upconvert was disabled. When trying to play a DVD in normal 2D mode.
All settings were tried and altered to fix the problem around a thousand times.
Software uninstalled and re-booted and re-installed a dozen times each.
I also had to un-install the software and re-boot and re-install the following;-
nVidia graphics driver (from nVidia sites own 295.73 and re-install Update to the `older` nVidia Toshiba 260.51 driver).
I used to be able to upconvert DVDs to 3D using this laptop; so it did work many months ago; but now that has all stopped for months now.
Its a pain as I have un-installed everything and re-installed all the relevant software from the Toshiba home page; but no solution for the problem without getting mugged an extra $59.
I hate computers for the ten-thousandth time.
    1 minute Ramble:-
Its the last Microsoft product I will ever buy (Windows Ultimate rubbish [had to buy a new A3 color lazer printer as no Win 7 drivers for my existing laser printer]).
SAMSUNG (3D internet TV) products from now on. No computers for ten years. Until the rats get it right and stop experimenting on my wallet. $10,000 on PC products in the past 5 years and still being able to do simple things like watch a 3D movie is a hit and miss affair.
I`m rambling....because a hundred hours reading on how to get it working again has scrambled my head.
    Spec
    Toshiba A660 3D laptop. Satellite.
    Windows 7 Ultimate. Updated.
    Intel i7 1.73Ghz
    Graphics is GTS 350M
4GB Ram (8-gig upgrade on order)
    Spare 550GB hard-drive space.
    Toshiba site; Bios updated.
Toshiba own DVD 3D player (doesn't cut the mustard) Version 4.00.1.08
Toshiba Corel WinDVD 3D player (doesn't cut the mustard) Version 10.0.5.822
The Nvidia graphics always works fine on the test background page; which makes me think software; but all the relavant software has been updated. Re-installed and re-tried a hundred times with different settings.
I thought the discs were the problem. But 50 DVDs not working in 3D up-converting, or faulty all by themselves? And half of my 3D Blu-Ray collection?
I wondered if these these problems are deeper than this one system. Whether there was a systemic problem somewhere (besides blaming the buyer end-user).
Toshiba assist line in one call was a guy who knew far less than me and had to ask someone advice for every single part of the call. 2 hours to tell me to re-install the software in a long, slow, bit-by-bit way, eventually. We done everything they can do to help. Now they seem to blame the discs and don`t have any answer.
Microsoft x64 Ultimate says its roger all to do with them on their helpline/e-mail assist.
    I tried nVidia to no avail;
Any ideas; do I bite the bullet and everyone eventually be forced bit by bit to pay for $59 software to get the thing working.
    Whats the beef?

    Hi
You wrote really long story :) anyway this is an user to user community Im not sure if I could clarify all these issue for you but I would try to share my knowledge with you.
But firstly it would be really interesting to know what Satellite A660-xxx do you have exactly?
You said that you have installed the Win 7 ultimate.
According to the Toshiba page the notebook was preinstalled with Windows Home Premium. The preinstalled WinDVD was a full version (not trial) and you have not to pay for this software. In my case I have not to pay for any software (except MS Office :) )
    you said also:
    > I installed the latest TRIAL ($59) Corel WinDVD 11 Pro player and everything (including 3D) works perfect again. But for 30 days only; until/unless I`m robbed of $59 additional that is.
So it seems that you dont use the preinstalled Win DVD but you have installed other version which was not preinstalledso you have to purchase such version if you want to use a full version of any software which is not part of Toshiba image.

  • Satellite A660-1FM - Max. screen resolution of external monitor

    Hi All,
This may be (probably) an easy questions to answer but I have a Satellite A660-1FM and want to use it with my Samsung Syncmaster (forgotten model) external screen. I grabbed an HDMI->DVI-D adapter, and all is well, but here is my question:
The toshiba specs page for my laptop (http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/product/Satellite-A660-1FM/1096013/toshibaShop/false/) shows an external resolution capability of:
    Max Resolution : 2,048 x 1,536
Max Refresh Rate : 100 Hz
    Non-interlaced resolution with max refresh rate : 1,920 x 1,200
But I get what I call standard HDMI resolution (not surprising I guess) when connected HDMI->DVI-D to my external monitor. I have previously run this monitor on my desktop at much high resolutions than 1080P, so the monitor is capable.
Just wondered what I'm missing here, or is it a case of the graphics card spec is higher than is possible to output from the laptop ?
    Thanks for any help
    Andy

    Hi,
    Thanks for the reply.
As to native resolution of the external monitor - unsure how to find this - but it was running a with a lot higher res when it was connected to my old desktop (which has died and been replaced by this laptop)
R/E the adapter - My Samsung Syncmaster monitor has a DVI-D cable sticking out the back of it, so I needed to connect that to my laptop - either vga-> DVI-D or HDMI-DVI-D to make use of it.
The external monitor is currently running at 1680 x 1050 using the laptop HDMI output -> HDMI-DVI-D adapater -> external monitor.
Before my desktop died, using the same external monitor I was running at 1680 x (guessing a bit here) 2048 ish (really sure I had a greater y res, this 1050 lark is really squishy).. in any case, the Y resolution was much much much better than 1050.
But, according to the specification for this laptop, it can output 2048 x 1536 to an external device (How, the HDMI and VGA outptu cannot go that high right ?)
So, I'm trying to figure out how to get the resolution on the laptop spec onto my external monitior, which has more than handled this resolution before my old gaming desktop died.
Thanks again for the reply - I hope this makes my question clearer.
    Cheers
    Andy

  • Satellite A660-11M - How to enable WiFi?

Hi. I have a Satellite A660-11M with key features
    -Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (pre-installed, Toshiba-HDD recovery)
    -Intel Core i7-720QM Processor
    Wifi:
    Compliancy : Wi-Fi
    Network Support : 802.11b/g/n
    Manufacturer : Broadcom
    Wireless Technology : Wireless LAN
    Manufacturer : Broadcom
    Wireless Technology : Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR
It has been working fine but after the children were using the machine and shut it down I cannot see the Router using the wifi.
I tried the hardware switch on the media strip between the keyboard and the screen and none of the buttons respond; I suspect this may be the issue.
Fn F8 brings up the wifi fn display but clicking on it will not enable it. Trouble shooting informs me to "Turn on Wireless Capability" but as stated above, the media strip appears to be inactive. I can connect normally using the cable to the router.
I tried a System Restore but that didn't help.
So although I have a sinking feeling I am missing something obvious, any thoughts before I start reloading wifi driver and resetting BIOS? If that is the recommended approach, what driver controls the media strip
    Many thanks for any help.

Thanks for all your assistance... Got it sorted:
