Satellite A660 - Battery discharge per day in hibernation/shutdown

I submitted my Satellite A660 for troubleshooting after months of testing a battery discharge of 5+ percent/day in hibernation (4+ percent/day in shutdown). There is no noticable discharge when the battery is pulled out of the laptop. The discharge when the battery is inserted is much higher than previous laptops I've owned, but Toshiba has said that this is normal.
I was wondering if I could poll people for what they have found to be normal (versus what they have found to be problematic).
Thanks for any anecdotes.

Excuse the name change, my initial ID is no longer recognized.
I tried a simple search on this forum for "hibernation battery discharge" with no quotes. Only a handful of hits, none relevant.
I did an advanced search on this forum for "hibernation AND battery" with no quotes. None for this year, and nothing relevant for last year.
Would you be able to provide a link to the relevant discussions that you found? As well, for my edification, could you please provide the search expression, forum, and timeframe?
Thanks.

  • Hibernate drains battery 20% per day - X301 Windows 7

I have an X301  2777 CTO with the factory larger battery.  SSD   Running Windows 7.  All Windows patches up to date.  All BIOS and drivers up to date.  Reinstalled Power Management.  When I put the laptop into hibernate it drains the battery at a rate of about 20% per day.  The machine behavior is that of Hibernate and not Sleep.
I have an open support case but w/o a resolution as yet.
    Any ideas?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Lenovo ask me to download several new drivers and install them which I did.  No Help.  Then I took the battery completely out to see if it held a charge for a few days to rule out the battery as the problem.  The Battery held the charge when it was out of the machine.   Called back Lenovo and was now told 25% a day loss was norm for hibernate mode.  I said not true with all the ThinkPad’s in the past and perhaps he is thinking of sleep mode.
Unbelievably,  and I had been very polite, I was told “well if you don’t believe me” and he hung up!
I called back later that day and was told by a nice lady that I was correct and hibernate should not drain the battery anywhere near the extent I was experiencing.   I was promised a Level 2 Tech would call back.  Still waiting.
I’m a fair size ThinkPad buying company but they are alienating me.
I am also going to try shutting the machine down as opposed to hibernate to see if the battery drains when the machine has shut down but the battery is still in place.
Would like any input from other x301 users on this.   I will post if resolved -or if- not.

  • How many iPhones stolen per day? Prevent shutdown.

    Dear friends.
Since I had my iPhone stolen I'm searching for a way (without jailbreaking it) to prevent that my new iPhone gets lost.
"Find my iPhone" is only useful when the thief is dum.b as hel.l and when nobody has found it (yet).
Does Apple see comercial advantages on this situation? How many iPhones are stolen a day?!
I mean, why in the world wouldn't you develop security apps and security features so we don't lose our beloved phones?
This is serious, and it seems Apple doesn't care. I don't want to jailbreak my iPhone, but you are not helping, Apple!
I would like to see a Restriction setting that would block the shutdown of my iPhone when it's locked. It would require a passcode to shut it down. It's so simple!
This way thieves wouldn't be able to shut it down!
The same works for Airplane mode and Wi-Fi. A passcode should be required to turn it off (if I enable this feature).
Advanced considerations: DFU mode and recovery mode should "expire", the iPhone should reset itself after some time (e.g. 10 minutes) so the iPhone would come back to life and allow tracking.
    SECURITY!
So far nothing was done in this area. I believe Apple should pay more attention to this.
    Best regards,
    Will

Sorry requiring a passcode to shut down the phone isn't a good idea.
do you know how many users forget their 4 digit passcode to unlock their phones - use the search function at the top right and you'll see all the threads.

  • Toshiba WT310 in hibernation mode: battery discharges within few days

As the title says if fully charged and left in hibernation mode the battery discharges within a few days.
I thought it might have been due to "connected mode" but it isn't supported anyway.
    Any ideas?

Well unsurprisingly not as easy as that after all.
I rang the number gave them the ID# for my support call, let him read through, explained again what I'd done to try and resolve. Asked him what we do next.
"I'll just go and ask my colleague"
So according to his colleague losing 10% power overnight when switched off is apparently as expected for a laptop/tablet.
I begged to differ and pointed out that according to the manual the battery should last 70 days when the Tablet is shutdown. Bit of a difference between 10 weeks and just over 1 week I said.
We then had to find that page in the manual to make sure I wasn't lying, I wasn't.
Still didn't mean there was a problem apparently, so I send it back and it's NFF I get charged 60+
So I said OK you send in writing that the manual is inaccurate and amend the manual and I'll accept that.
    Can't do that...
    Well then what next?
Escalated to the next level of support! Though I did have to assure them I was switching it off and not putting it into sleep by accident (the flashing light is the give away there) and that whilst I was waiting I would test it using "shutdown /p".
me "Shutdown -p sure if you like"
him "no /p!" didn't bother explaining it worked either way.
By the way I manage an IT Support Dept we do Hardware, Software and Network support, 10% power drain in 24 hours when shut down for a Laptop is not an expected thing. Not unless the battery is stuffed rather than FAIR as mine apparently is.
    The story continues...

  • Satellite A100 - battery is discharging overnight while power is off

    Hi everyone,
I have a brand new Satellite A100 and I noticed that when I fully charge it and then turn it off and take the plug out of the socket, the next day when I stick it back into the socket the amber light says that it is charging.
So I turned on the Laptop and checked how full the battery is and it says 94%. I let it finish charging to 100% and then turned it off again and took out the plug from the socket. The same thing happened the next day! It had discharged again!
I'm sure I didn't put it in Hibernate mode because I checked all the settings and selected Turn Off to shut down the Laptop.
I've read about the battery recall so I looked it up on the toshiba site and downloaded the battery testing program. The result came out that my battery is not among the affected serial numbers. I even manually checked the number on their list but mine is not supposed to be affected.
Is anyone having the same problems or is it normal that the battery discharges by itself?
Please let me know.. Thanks :)

Yes of course, its not unusual that the battery will discharge also if the notebook is not on.
The same happens on my old notebook.
Then notebook was shut down for several weeks and after this period the battery was empty. I have had to connect the AC adaptor to starting the notebook.

  • Re: Battery life of Satellite A660-141

How come the satellite A660-141 has a 6 cell battery as many other toshiba models, but has a maximum life of 4h15min !!!!!! How come?

Over 4h on Satellite A660. It is great!!!
I have older Satellite A300 and I can work on battery power supply max 2,5 hours. It is quite enough for such notebook but a little bit more time will be better of course.
How is your experience with Satellite A660? To be honest I think about exchange my machine with this new model.

  • Portege R200 - Battery discharges when turned off

Hi purchased a Toshiba R200 in Australia about 2-3 months ago with the standard battery and the extended battery. My problem is that even when I turn the machine off the battery continues to discharge (i.e. it is not hibernating nor is it suspended). For example I left the computer off power for 4 days and did not touch it. When I came back and used it the main battery had dropped to 60% and the extended battery had also dropped to around 60% (both were full when I left). It looses about 10% per day. I've never experienced this before in the 5 dell/toshiba notebooks I've had before.
It can't be my usage of the batteries because I rarely use the machine away from its power adapter. At most the batteries have experienced maybe 10 full charge/discharge cycles since I've had it. Also if I do run on battery power I will get around 7-8 hours of battery with the main and extended battery (which is normal) so it doesn't seem like 'memory effect' from the battery.
I'm trying to disconnect the batteries from the computer for a few days to check if it is the battery or the computer, however I just wanted to find out if anyone has any ideas or experiences with this problem?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi
Believe me it is normal. At my notebook happened the same thing. Over night there is deficit of 3 5% of battery capacity. Dont worry about it. Only what you can do is to do something about maximizing battery life.
For Nickel Metal Hydride batteries (NiMH) the battery will better hold a charge if allowed to discharge at least once a week. The chemical reactions that correspond to charge and discharge in a rechargeable battery should occur to obtain the maximum number of charge/discharge cycles in the battery.
It is not necessary to remove the battery from the computer during the week when it is on AC power.
Google a little bit around. You can find a lot of useful information about notebook-battery.
On this forum you can find similar discussions and many users have reported about this known issue. I just hope that you have charged the battery on the right way like described in users manuals.
    Bye

  • 'A problem with the cooling system' error message on Satellite A660

    Hi all,
Hope I can get some help here. I've had about 5 HP laptops after all of them had problems and faults. I got sick of them and therefore got a refund and bought a high spec A660-1FH.
The A660 has been a great laptop for two days until yesterday when I started getting a warning message saying 'A problem with the cooling system has been detected. Please turn off the computer immediately, and return it for service'.
The cpu fan works fine as you can here it spinning and the temperature of the i5-460m processor is around 40 degrees for both cores - which seems normal to me. I've noted that it happens only when running on battery and if you switch from eco utility to power saver mode. Its fine when running on the 'balanced' power setting. The fan is louder before when this message appears.
As its under 28 days my retailer swapped it for a brand new one straight away. Got the new one home, and the same message appears again. Has anyone else experienced this. As two laptops have had this, I'm wondering if this is normal for the A660 series laptop or if there is really a hardware issue?!
I have tried to upgrade eco utility and the bios of the laptop but both are the latest versions. Can anyone help or share if they experience a similar issue with their laptop?
    Thanks

In front of me I have Satellite A660-13Q (PSAW3E) and I have it about 6 weeks now. It runs almost 10 hours daily and until now I didnt notice such message or anything else that can be suspect for hardware functionality.
I really dont know why this happen on your notebook and dont think there is anything you can do about it.
I would exchange it again. What you can also try is to contact nearest Toshiba service. Make a call, explain the situation and ask if they can help you with this.

  • Satellite A660 - Will not boot up and HDD boot fail

    Hi,
    firstly thanks for your time.
    Model: Satellite A660 (PSAW3A-07U00R)
The problem started yesterday, the computer was going slow as an application closed, so I held the off button untill the pc turned off. When I restarded the laptop it went to a screen saying: Start windows normally or repair Windows (recomended)
When started normally it just hangs at a blank screen, the repair Windows recommends a system restore to earlier point which didnt work. As it just hangs again. I tried pressing F8 and starting in safe mode but again it just hangs. Then after a few times trying safe mode and another system restore the computer then hangs when I press F8. After this the computer goes past the Toshiba logo screen with F2 and F12 options (which both still work), and then it comes up boot failed then goes blank and comes with boot failed bootfailed with some numbers and letters, then it goes to a small box titled boot menu with 4 options. These are
    HDD/SSD Toshiba MK6465GSX
    CD/DVD MAT****ABD-CMB UJ141ES
    FDD
    LAN
If I press ESC it goes through the bootfailed loop and ends up at same screen, if I press enter on "HDD/SSD Toshiba MK6465GSX" then it quickly comes back to screen and at the bottom it says [HDD/SSD Toshiba MK6465GSX] is failed.
I dont understand why it got worse over time. Can anyone think of why this has happend and more importantly how can I get my pc working again? Note: holding 0 then starting does nothing for me atm
    regards, Matthew

All you people looking here on this dead thread.....
Toshiba A660 laptops are renowned for having hard drive fails and boot up problems after grinding to a halt.
My solution (after losing 3 hard drives [and a terabyte of family treasured times]) is the following.
Use MALWAREBYTES (free download and use for 28 days)
Scan and fix. Mine found over 300 trojans that 2013 Norton 360 could not find.
    Re-boot into safe mode.
    SCAN again.
Re-boot and empty the malwarebytes repair files it retains...
Run Norton/McAfee (whichever you have) and you should still have no issues.
    Make a back-up repair disc. Ooooops......no you cant...........at least my laptop can`t.
    I don`t know why.....
Tell me tosh..... why does windows x64 refuse to allow me to make a system boot disc (even though the laptop is all driver updated and Windows updated)?
Uninstall MalwareBytes when Norton/McAfee tells you there will be a conflict between the two programs.
It tells you to re-boot after uninstalling it.
Then when it re-boots you get a black screen. You cannot even get to bios. You think ytour laptop is turned into a brick frisbee. You pull out the battery in frustration after five minutes.
You replace and re-boot....but again you get no bios or boot up.... you think its destroyed the Bios or graphics somehow....youo can hear the hard-drive but you have no clue whats going on..
Around this time you shake the laptop in frustration.....
    Calm down.
Switch on and leave FIFTEEN MINUTES....Ten of which will be a Black nothing screen with maybe a single white underscore line in the top left corner.LEAVE IT ALONE.
Make a sunday dinner for ten people....When you go back to the computer it will be up and running.
When you re-boot again, it will be dead black for five minutes...then boots up... you still think it has a problem... LEAVE IT.
When you reboot again it should work perfect (assuming you have not been overheating it by using it on a cushion on your lap and overheating the insides [use a laptop fan tray]) if you have not shaken your hard drive or caused scrambled damage by pulling the power fifty times like some people do.
I have lost three hard drives and thousands of Gigabytes of treasured family memories discovering the secret the hard way.
    Enjoy.
Buy a different brand next time.
ALL Windows system files should be on a SWITCHED (to update) version of Windows.
Spinning drives should be for Data only.

  • IPhone battery discharges even when turned off since iOS 5.1.1

Since updating to iOS 5.1.1 I have had battery problems, discharging at around 4% per hour even when not used. Turning off every concieveable service and reloaded iOS as a new device unfortunately has not solved the problem. I have resorted to leaving the phone plugged in all of the time and recently started to turn it off overnight. To my surprise, the phone continues to discharge when turned off! I couldn't find this problem when I searched (apologies if I didn't search hard enougth!)

I have been waiting for months for the next iOS to see if it would rectify my battery drain problem but I continued to have the battery discharge problem after installing iOS6 .
My Home button has been playing up with random no responses and random double clicks, so I replaced the home button hoping that may also address the battery drain issue - no joy.
Then I had a look to see if I had added any Apps when the problem first appeared at the time of upgrading to iOS5.1.1. (You can view Apps by date in iTunes on the iPhone Apps tab.)
It turns out that on about the same day as the iOS 5.1.1 update I also added the Lifesize ClearSea video conferencing App. Today I disabled the App in iTunes (unchecked it) and resynced the iPhone. I believe this removes the App from the phone whilst leaving it in my iTunes so I can add it back easily. For the first time in months my phone is now cold rather than luke warm.
Superficially at least it seems that ClearSea has been running in the background, even when manually quitted and even when the iPhone was powered OFF! I will report back in a few days to confirm this was the culprit.
Five months with a phone that barely lasts a day has been a real pain...

  • Satellite A660 wont start again until i turn to safe mode

Just purchase toshiba Satellite A660: i tell the story to compensate closely to my answer, hopefully ..
I just purchase it new, run the insallation program for first use. When its up and running just within that day i noticed that it start to hang up when i hooked external drive for some program installation (adobe lightroom).
Its still fine but when i turn it off, it wont start again until i did turn to safe mode so that i could back up some of the files and run the recovery again.
This time on 64bit. When its finish its process, it works well for just a couple of hours.
It fell faster now thou, maybe because its on 64bit? ( any recommendation whether its 32 or 64bit) specs: i5 , 4ram, 1g ddcatd graphics , win7 home premium, ..
Now, when i turn it off it never start back again windows say.. start up repair. ..
I did let it run since this morning until now still they cant find whats the problem (i'm refering the loptop) .
So any idea on whats goin ?

    > It fell faster now thou, maybe because its on 64bit? ( any recommendation whether its 32 or 64bit) specs: i5 , 4ram, 1g ddcatd graphics , win7 home premium, ..
64bit Operating system is better if your notebook supports 4GB or more RAM.
Why? Because Win 32bit recognizes max 3.2GB even if more RAM is available.
This is 32bit limitation; no matter what OS it is; Linux, Win XP, Vista, Win7 etc
This is the reason why 64bit OS are so popular in the last time
    Regarding the OS issue;
    I recommend running a HDD recovery again... this means you should reinstall the OS usign the Toshiba recovery option;
Press F8 while powering up the notebook, Choose Repair my Computer, -> HDD recovery

    Hi,
I currently own a Toshiba Satellite A660, recently it has been shutting off unexpectedly when I play games.  I've always played these games before which is why it concerns me.  After it shuts down if I try to turn it on immediately the fan goes at full blast and it will turn off again and I must wait a few minutes for it to cool.  It seems like my computer is working too hard to cool the processor or whatever.
I cleaned up my disk space and am at 0% fragmentation so thats as far as my knowledge goes.
    Thank you

  • Satellite A660 DVD/CD-ROM drive does not detect discs

    Hi there,
I have a Toshiba Satellite A660 with a MAT****A BD-CMB UJ141ES DVD/CD-ROM drive. It is about 18 months old and recently I have noticed that it does not recognise any CDs/DVDs. It makes a couple of noises once inserted but then stops spinning and nothing happens or changes in My Computer view.
Please note there seems to be no apparent problems with the drive:
    - It is present in My Computer
    - The device is working properly in device manager
    Things I have already tried:
    - Run Microsoft FixIt and CD-ROM/DVD Troubleshooter - both said it could not recognise media
    - Deleted upper filter in the registry as per many suggestions (no lower filter present)
    - Updated driver
I don't know what else to do. Please help as this is frustrating for a relatively new notebook which never is moved from my desk (don't expect many damaged parts).
    Cheers

As I said: clean the laser lens
If you open the CD/DVD drive you will see the small laser lens.
Use cotton wool tip and alcohol
