Satellite A660 - Fan always on and loud

Hi all,
I bought the Satellite A660-10 days ago and I love it so far.
The only issue I have is the fan noise. It is always on at 53% of the speed even when I don't do anything.
I am wondering if this is normal as I have only an intel i3.
Thanks!

I dont have Satellite A660 and cannot say for sure what happen exactly on this notebook but at the moment I have several notebooks at home including brand new Satellite U500 and I have reduced cooling method on each of them and run in Balanced power plan.
All of them are pretty quiet and fan activity is on minimum level. It runs constantly but on slow speed.
I must try to check this on Satellite A660. Friend of mine has one.
By the way: doud be careful with display driver update especially with drivers from non-Toshiba page. Maybe you will get more graphic performance but Im afraid the cooling fan will be probably louder than now.

i purchased a new 27inch full spec. mac but the fan in ther screen is always on and its loud??
is there na way to reduce this noise or to make it goers off

Try resetting the SMC > Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
Then if the fan does not return to it's normal speed, there is a hardware issue with that iMac and you need to return it for a replacement.

  • Fan on fast and loud

I've seen this issue posted a few times with no firm answers, so...
My fan often runs very fast and loud....at those times I have noticed through the Activity Monitor (All Processes) something called "Quick Look Server" that has a listing of 98 to 99 in the CPU column; all of the other processes are in single digits.
When the fan is quiet, the Activity Monitor doesn't have the Quick Look Server anywhere near the 98-99 listing.
Any idea what the Quick Look Server does and whether it's the cause of the fan running loud and fast?

    MacBook Mac OS X (10.5.5)

in the Activity Monitor, there's a drop-down menu, and if you select "All Process" it will list everything that's up and running, in order starting with whatever is using the most of the CPU. Most of it is internal to the system but it also includes whatever applications are open.
Whenever the fan is running high on my Macbook, the "Quick Look Server" is always at the top of the list, so I'd like to know what that is.

  • Imac (Intel based) fan runs continuously and loudly.

Have done a SMC reset, and the fan is still running loudly and continuously.  Only 1 application open - firefox.  This has been an ongoing, continuous problem.
Thanks in advance for any help you might offer.

Have had the same problem  .. have reset the PRAM & SMC, doubled the amount of RAM.  Fans runs & Activity Monitor shows most of RAM is used up with nothing open.  Running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on a Mac Book with 4g of RAM,  Apple Support showed no hardware problems.  ????

  • XServe fans running fast and loud

    Good morning
I have searched the information base and tried a few suggestions without success.  Hoping for another solution here.
I have an Intel based XServe (2008) (OS 10.6.8) whose fans are running faster (and therefore louder) than they have previously.  This follows on the heels of a power outage (two of them actually) here at school, though the server is behind a UPS.  The system identifier light is also blinking in a particular pattern - 4 flashes and a pause repeating.
The server is up and running, teachers are connecting to it just fine, the RAID is intact and online, the drives all look good according to Disk Utility.  So, functionally, everything looks OK - the fans are just running faster and louder than before - noticibly louder than the other Intel XServe in the rack.  The server is at the top of the enclosed rack with a space below it as it has been for the last 4 years.
This summer I took all the XServes out of the rack, opened them up, and blew the dust out of them (including a moth - truly a bug in the system), so the all the airways are clean and clear.
I have tried the suggestions I could find on this forum:
         restarted a bunch of times
shut down and disconnect everything (including power) for a period of time
reset the PMU/SMC or whatever it is called doing the front panel buttons with the blue lights on the lower row
reset the PMU/SMC or whatever it is called by holding down the power button while disconnected from power
I have installed iStat Pro and the temperatures are averaging around mid- to upper- 30°C and the fans are running around 3000 RPM .  The temperatures aren't signifcantly different that the other XServe, but the fans are running about twice the speed.
I had to reformat the RAID earlier this weekend and copy over the data files from backup and reassign permissions, but the server was running quietly after that was all finished.  It seems to be post-powerbump that the fans became noisy.
Sorry for the long post, but I tried to include all the pertinent information.  I would have tossed in photos and videos if I could have!
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    TIA
    Greg

Did a little more searching about setting up LOM on the XServe and I think I have it figured out now.
I assigned a unique (different) IP address to Network 1 in the LOM dialogue box in Configure Server menu of Server Monitor since I only have Ethernet 1 enabled and linked to a switch using a unique (different) IP address for network traffic between the XServe and my clients.
I can now see (via Server Monitor remotely) that I have a dead blower in my fan array which, upon closer inspection, is also evident in the iStatPro display (one fan running at 18 RPM).  Hence the blinking system identifier light and the other fans running faster and harder (and noisier).
Oddly enough, I have a replacement fan array in a box of XServe spare parts.  I now have a weekend task.
Thanks for all the information to be found and the people participating in this forum.  Love it.

I have problem with fan, it runs very often and it is really loud.

    No it is not but....
First I got toshiba a660 13p and there was problem with button under the touchpad. I noticed that it ran silently and I was very glad of it but I decided to change it becouse of that button. So, they sent me another toshiba a660 but this time I heard fun all the time. Of course from time to time it got louder even when I did nothing on it. I don't thing is normal when I can't sleep with laptop next to me.

  • Satellite A660 - Fan running fast

    Hi,
today I purchased a new A660-1FM i7 laptop. I'm fairly pleased with it so far except the fan noise.
The minimum speed it runs at is 68%, rising to 75 and sometimes 90% at times.
It never goes below 68% even when nothing is is running (sat on desk top only).
Is this normal? My previous Tosh lap top fan just cuts in and out as required.
This new machine is far too noisy as I use in a quiet room most of the time.
I have played with all the power options including the cooling settings but does not make any difference.
Please help as I really don't want to have to talk to PC world (The place I bought it from) as I know they'll be totally un helpful.

    Hi Richard1970,
I cant agree with you... I have this wonderful notebook in front of me and I can confirm that the fan also stops sometimes as on other notebooks, especially when you use the Eco mode.
My A660 is equipped with Core i7, 6GB RAM and nVidia GT330M graphic card, so a lot of powerful hardware and Im using Windows 7 64bit.
If I play games on it for example, the fan runs on highest level but thats normal and its not annoying because I hear the game sound.
But if I use it for browsing in the Internet, the fan stops or almost runs on very low level. I use the Eco mode and changed the cooling method to battery optimized No problems at all and its really quiet.
By the way: What BIOS version you have? Im using the latest version, 1.80-WIN

  • MBP Retina 15 - Fans always on and mac is cold

Hi, is it normal for the MBP Retina 15" fans to be constantly on at around 2000rpm, even when CPU is ~40C? With CPU activity at 1.5% they constantly on. Thanks.

2,000 rpm is the normal state for the fans - it's not high at all (mine can go up to 6,000+ rpms and I can hear them then).
Your fans are always going to be running and around 2,000 rpms is about as low as it gets.

  • Satellite A660-1H7 Function Buttons and Logo lights went out

This may seem a little silly to experience users of Toshiba laptops BUT I got my laptop recently, and few days ago I lost the lights on my Function Buttons (next to the power button) plus the 'satillite' logo at the bottom left corner.
I don't know if I did something to switch them off?
Saddly I don't know how to get the lights back on.
Can anyone PLEASE help and tell me how (step-by-step if poss) to get them back.
    Thank you in advance.

    THANX MasterG...
I followed your advice, I found the Backlight.exe in the TBS folder. I clicked on it and double clicked but nothing happened... I decided to click the file next to it called *Dimmer* and suddenly all the lights came back on.. Bingo..!! I still can't use my eco button for some reason, I used to be able to press that button it would turn green and my eco settings would kick in.. I am having to do this via my hidden icons... But it has had the desired affect....
I was wondering if you could make any suggestions to Speed Up the time it takes my laptop to load up... It seems to take a long time for an i5 processor..
I did access MSConfig and the Start Up Tab I have some 37 different items listed there... Apart from my anti-virus which I know I need to keep I dont know what to remove from the list so I can speed up the loading proceses ....
    Thanks again...

  • Closed lid, fans always running

Howdy. I've been using my MBP in closed lid mode attached to a Cinema Display. I expected the fans to run constantly when in use, especially with XP running in Parallels. When I put the computer to sleep--still attached to monitor, usb keyboard, bluetooth mouse and power adapter--it acts as I suspect it would, fans stop, front LED starts fading in and out. However, I'll come back later and the LED will be solid, display blank, and the fans running away. The keyboard or mouse will wake the computer and then it runs as normal. This has happened overnight as well as in half an hour, and several times.
I am kind of getting concerned about using the computer this way. Fans always fail, and I am not really looking forward to opening the computer up again.
I guess my questions are: why would the computer be running the fans, especially after being in sleep for hours, and is it shortening my MBPs expected life using it with the lid closed?
    Thanks.

I'd guess/assume that something is actually waking it from sleep and causing the heat/fan activity and that when you return you're not actually waking it up just re-activating it from screensaver mode ...
Run Utilities/Console and click 'All Messages' top left - what lines appear during the time you think it should be sleeping ?
It isn't shortening the life of the hardware using it in clamshell mode but if something is causing it to overheat regularly that will have an impact on internal components/motherboard that could be detrimental.

  • My MacBook's fan is almost ALWAYS on and far too loud

    Hi,
    please advice.
My 4 year old laptop is too noisy. The fan is always on and the computer's always hot. I have browsed on this forum and following other peoples' suggestions, I reset the PRAM (by turning the computer off, unplugging it, taking the battery out, pressing the power button for 5 secs, putting back the battery, plugging the laptop back in the power socket, and pressing the power button for 5 secs). I checked the Activity Monitor and did not find any process taking up much CPU. I downloaded the Fan Control but do not understand what it tells me (left one is pumped up to 5000 RPM, right one is -1 RPM, temperature around 60 - 70 degrees celsius. Sometimes, the fan quietens down but more often than not, it is on and very loud. I cannot watch movie on it without plugging in headphones. What can the problem be and how to solve it? I am usually running the following applications at the same time: Firefox, Mail,Skype, and Microsoft Word.
    Thank you in advance.

  • Satellite A660 - Will not boot up and HDD boot fail

    Hi,
    firstly thanks for your time.
    Model: Satellite A660 (PSAW3A-07U00R)
The problem started yesterday, the computer was going slow as an application closed, so I held the off button untill the pc turned off. When I restarded the laptop it went to a screen saying: Start windows normally or repair Windows (recomended)
When started normally it just hangs at a blank screen, the repair Windows recommends a system restore to earlier point which didnt work. As it just hangs again. I tried pressing F8 and starting in safe mode but again it just hangs. Then after a few times trying safe mode and another system restore the computer then hangs when I press F8. After this the computer goes past the Toshiba logo screen with F2 and F12 options (which both still work), and then it comes up boot failed then goes blank and comes with boot failed bootfailed with some numbers and letters, then it goes to a small box titled boot menu with 4 options. These are
    HDD/SSD Toshiba MK6465GSX
    CD/DVD MAT****ABD-CMB UJ141ES
    FDD
    LAN
If I press ESC it goes through the bootfailed loop and ends up at same screen, if I press enter on "HDD/SSD Toshiba MK6465GSX" then it quickly comes back to screen and at the bottom it says [HDD/SSD Toshiba MK6465GSX] is failed.
I dont understand why it got worse over time. Can anyone think of why this has happend and more importantly how can I get my pc working again? Note: holding 0 then starting does nothing for me atm
    regards, Matthew

All you people looking here on this dead thread.....
Toshiba A660 laptops are renowned for having hard drive fails and boot up problems after grinding to a halt.
My solution (after losing 3 hard drives [and a terabyte of family treasured times]) is the following.
Use MALWAREBYTES (free download and use for 28 days)
Scan and fix. Mine found over 300 trojans that 2013 Norton 360 could not find.
    Re-boot into safe mode.
    SCAN again.
Re-boot and empty the malwarebytes repair files it retains...
Run Norton/McAfee (whichever you have) and you should still have no issues.
    Make a back-up repair disc. Ooooops......no you cant...........at least my laptop can`t.
    I don`t know why.....
Tell me tosh..... why does windows x64 refuse to allow me to make a system boot disc (even though the laptop is all driver updated and Windows updated)?
Uninstall MalwareBytes when Norton/McAfee tells you there will be a conflict between the two programs.
It tells you to re-boot after uninstalling it.
Then when it re-boots you get a black screen. You cannot even get to bios. You think ytour laptop is turned into a brick frisbee. You pull out the battery in frustration after five minutes.
You replace and re-boot....but again you get no bios or boot up.... you think its destroyed the Bios or graphics somehow....youo can hear the hard-drive but you have no clue whats going on..
Around this time you shake the laptop in frustration.....
    Calm down.
Switch on and leave FIFTEEN MINUTES....Ten of which will be a Black nothing screen with maybe a single white underscore line in the top left corner.LEAVE IT ALONE.
Make a sunday dinner for ten people....When you go back to the computer it will be up and running.
When you re-boot again, it will be dead black for five minutes...then boots up... you still think it has a problem... LEAVE IT.
When you reboot again it should work perfect (assuming you have not been overheating it by using it on a cushion on your lap and overheating the insides [use a laptop fan tray]) if you have not shaken your hard drive or caused scrambled damage by pulling the power fifty times like some people do.
I have lost three hard drives and thousands of Gigabytes of treasured family memories discovering the secret the hard way.
    Enjoy.
Buy a different brand next time.
ALL Windows system files should be on a SWITCHED (to update) version of Windows.
Spinning drives should be for Data only.

  • Satellite A660-18N hanging and needs hard reboot

My Satellite A660-18N hangs every other day about 2/3 times. I cannot press ctrl + alt + del and the mouse does not move. I have to hold down the power button to reboot it manually. It started about 2 weeks after I got it which was in September. I watch a lot of videos online (and offline) and usually after the screen freezes/hangs, the audio continues and stretches. I thought that this was a problem with IE8 so I switched to Google Chrome but this still continues. This problem also occurs offline. Also, after my laptop hangs, the fan speeds up so I thought it was an overheating problem. I bought a cooling mat a few days ago and the system still hangs. I'm not sure what to do now, can anyone help?
    Intel core i7 q740 @ 1.73Ghz
    4.00GB ram
    64-bit OS
    Windows 7
Nvidia Geforce 310M 512MB dedicated video memory

I'm having the same problem as the OP, with my A660-11M.
At the moment the display is freezing a few times every day and it's been like this for the last week. Before that, (almost) no problems for a few months after having similar problems.
So, it seems to be coming in bursts which is, needless to say, bizarre.
I too experiences it mainly while watching video (and similarly the audio would continue after the freeze) so I disabled Hardware Acceleration in the FlashPlayer settings after reading this post:
    http://forums.toshiba.com/t5/Video-Display/Toshiba-A660-Screen-Freeze/td-p/189944
    But this didn't help.
Then I thought it might be Chrome, so I switched to Firefox 4.0.1 but this didn't help either.
Now, I have disabled the Flash plugin to see if that works - too early to say so far.
BTW, these days the crashing is occuring mostly when I am NOT playing video - although I don't play much video anyway.
