Satellite A660 - How to change from 32bit too 64bit system

Howdy!
I bought a New Toshiba Satellite A660 i7-2630QM with windows 7 home premium.
My problem is Toshiba includes instructions for the first start up and it says i can choose between 32 bit operating system and 64 bit operation system, but when i turned it on the first time it did not give me any option/choice.
Now ive got 6GB memory and can only use 4GB because its set too 32 bit system is there any easy way to change it as I dont have a windows disc, all the software is preloaded?

Hi
I think this info is mentioned in user manual.
First of all you can create a Recover Disk with the Toshiba image.
You should create such disk using the preinstalled software called Toshiba Recover Disk creator (or Toshiba Recovery Creator).
Furthermore there should be a possibility to recover the notebook using the HDD recover.
During the HDD recovery, the setup should provide an option which would allow you to choose between the 32bit and 64bit.
But just one question: what A660-xxx do you have exactly?

Can some one please tell me how to change from a 32 bit to a 64 bit operating system for my Toshiba Satellite C660 Notebook?
No cds came with my notebook so I can't restore.
I installed the 32 bit when setting up by mistake and would now like to change.
    Thanks in advance

    >No cds came with my notebook so I can't restore.
In user manual you could find a info that recovery disk needs to be created using preinstalled software called Toshiba Recovery Media (disk) Creator
    >I installed the 32 bit when setting up by mistake and would now like to change.
The Toshiba image of some notebook models contains the Win 7 32bit and 64bit system.
Not sure if your image supports both versions so cannot say for sure if you would be able to switch to 64bit but try this:

During HDD recovery procedure you should be asked what version you want to chooseof course if both versions would be available so check thisotherwise you will need to purchase an 64bit version.

    Please let me know. Thanks!
P/S: I saw some support staff has been helping to cancel the subscription for Photoshop CC and allow them to subscribe the Photography Program, can I have the same treatment as well? Thanks!

Well it’s not easy it seems. Some got help in two minutes others, like us, nothing?????
Perhaps it only works in the USA not in Europe?

  • Re: Can I change from 32 to 64bit?

Is it possible to change settings to 64 bit after the quick installation. Just bought this and with 4GB of mem probably chose wrong option?

    *@vinay_1*
    >I am also having same problem. I don't want to loose the preinstalled softwares that comes with my laptop such as Microsoft office starter and other Toshiba softwares and drivers. Can anyone give me the solution
If you bought the Toshiba notebook which was equipped with both OS (32bit and 64bit) then you could simply start the HDD recovery and could choose Win 7 64bit system.
Then Win 7 64bit, tools and drivers would be installed which are part of the Toshiba image.
If dont have Toshiba notebook where the HDD recovery contains Win 7 32bit and 64bit system, them you have to install Win 7 64bit from Microsoft disk and in such case you will loose the drivers and tools. In such case you will need to download the drivers from Toshiba driver page.

  • Oracle 10g XE migrate from 32bit to 64bit becomes slower

Oracle 10g XE migrate from 32bit to 64bit becomes slower
Currently we have a database using Oracle 10g XE R2
(Oracle Database 10g Express Edition Release 10.2.0.1.0)
    on a linux 32bit server.
And recently we did migrate it to another 64bit linux server.
But found after migration is it running slower at 64bit server (~ 25% slower)
    1. We would wonder any tuning is required on 64bit server?
Besides, as I know Oracle XE only using single core CPU for processing.
    On 32bit linux the CPU is Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E31235 @ 3.20GHz
    On 64bit linux the CPU is Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2470 v2 @ 2.40GHz
    2. Would the CPU clock speed on a single core also made the 64bit Oracle slower?
    Thanks a lot.

32 or 64 bit normally won't cause much performance difference as long as you can't use > 4GB RAM
Please note that XE can use only 1 core and 1GB memory.
According to benchmarks, Single Thread Rating of the 2 CPU really differ by around 25%. Quite consistent with your observation.
Of course, IO (i.e., disk) speed is also an important factor.

  • Qosmio X505 - How to change from 64bit to 32bit?

I just got my new qosmio x505
bij setup I missed the part where you can choose between 32 and 64bit so I have 64bit on it now, but most of my programms wont work now.
How to change to 32 bit?

    hi
also from licence perspective it is not allowed. if machine comes with a win7 x64 OEM licence you are not allowed to install win 7 32 bit. (it also should not be possible with the key provided on the licence sticker)
Only if you buy a full version you can choose (NOT OEM!), within the Retail! Version normaly both (32 and 64 bit) DVD's are included but you only allowed to install only one Version on one PC (32 OR 64 Bit) ...if you buy OEM (only allowed with new PC or HDD) you have to buy 32 Bit OR 64 Bit Version. (also no installsupport included in the OEM Versions)
So from this point of view... you have to buy a full retail version of windows 7 or a new hdd with an 32 Bit OEM WIN7 in order to do not have licence issues.
    (OEM versions are always cheaper)

  • How to change from SLIM to KDM?

    Hello,
I'm using the MATE desktop, OpenBox as window manager and SLIM for login.
I'm starting to feel tired of not being able to change between various desktops without closing the main one, I mean, with OpenSUSE Ctrl+Alt+F1 to F6 are terminal ttys (it is so with Arch+SLIM too), Ctrl+Alt+F7 to F12 are graphical ttys, you can change between any of them and log in as any user you want without closing the F7 tty, or closing it, or doing whatever you want. This was petty cool in order to kill some broken task that hanged the screen or in order to do whatever.
May I don't know how to do it with SLIM, but anytime I do Crtl+Alt+F9, for example, I just got a blank screen with an hyphen blinking. With OpenSUSE I got a graphical login screen.
    More:
I've got installed OpenBox, MATE and enlightenment. It is suppose me to be able to change between them pressing F1, and in fact SLIM changes where says "session: XXXX" between them at the login screen, but whatever I choose SLIM ALWAYS log me in MATE. I've got to change it manually in ~/.xinitrc and logout and login again every time I want to change between sessions. I cannot do it directly at the login screen.
Sometimes after login out and login in several times SLIM hangs and I have to reboot.
I think all these problems comes from slim, and since with OpenSUSE, that use kdm, I had no problem I want to try kdm as login manager, but I haven't seen any guide to do it if you've got a login manager already installed. I've seen it just if it is the first system installatio. And I'm a little scared of breaking my login and spend too much time fixing it.
How can I change from SLIM to KDM without pain?

WOW, I had to install kdebase-workspace and it installed as dependency a functional kde system . And... I was able to choose between all the other desktops but MATE, so... kdm and all that it installed with it's already uninstalled
But with kdm I was able to open an enlightenment session in tty 8 without closing kde in tty 7...
    ewaller wrote:Install kdm.
Disable the slim service using systemctl
Enable the kdm service using systemctl
No need to uninstall slim.  Hang on to it until everything is working
Thank you ewaller, it worked perfectly
Scimmia wrote:Well changing to kdm is as simple as using systemctl to disable slim and enable kdm. That won't get you graphical logins on tty8+, though.
So, how can I do it with slim?
Raynman wrote:Do you really need a GUI to kill a program?
No, I don't, it was just an example.
Sounds like your xinitrc isn't quite right, check the wiki page for slim.
I'm tired of reviewing my xinitrc in order to make slim let me choose my desktop. I think the F1 to change the session is experimental. I will open other thread in order to get some help or in order to help SLIM to solve this problem.
And you could try LightDM instead (because KDM probably pulls in some KDE crap). It comes with dm-tool (and a replacement for gdmflexiserver) to start a new session on another tty.
Sounds good. I'll try to make slim work perfectly and if I don't get it to work as perfectly I want I'll try other login managers.
