Satellite A660 - touchpad is too sensitiv

I'm having trouble getting use to the touchpad. Compared to my previous two laptops, this one seems hypersensitive at times, and irresponsive at others.
It hasn't helped to change the sensitivity, palm touch checking, or virtual scroll regions.
I'm wondering if it's just me, or do others find this to be the case?

Please excuse my change of identity. It seems that every time I start a thread, my user name ceases to be recognized.
The title of this thread is changed from the title that I provided so that it no longer reflects the problem. As I described, the touchpad seems hypersensitive at times, and irresponsive at others. I have changed the title back and I hope that it can be left that way.
In the past decade, I've owned two previous laptops, and used many others. They all used Synaptics drivers, and I could always adjust the sensitivity, palm checking, and virtual scroll regions to make it respond well. In this particular case, not so much. My left palm can be millimeters away from the surface of the touchpad, but it will still register as a contact. In other instances, I can be trying to move up two or three times before the pointer responds (or before virtual scrolling occurs). When that happens regularly, one begins to lose train of thought. I can be extremely frustrating, and I wondered with it was endemic to the design or just my particular machine.

  • Satellite A660 - Touchpad not working

I have a Satellite A660-16Z and the touchpad doesn't work at all even if it is enabled with F9.
I must use an external usb mouse.
I tried several times to unistall and reinstall the touchpad driver got from toshiba site without success.
In the beginning, after purchase,I remember the touchpad was working but I used an external mouse anyway.
From that time I upgraded the bios to 2.00 plus W7 upgrades and service pack 1.
    Any idea appreciated.

    Hi
Does the touchpad work if the USB mouse is disconnected?
As far as I know there is a option which disables the touchpad automatically if the USB mouse has been connected.
You can find this option in: control panel -> mouse -> Pointing device
    Check this.

  • Satellite A660 - How to change from 32bit too 64bit system

    Howdy!
I bought a New Toshiba Satellite A660 i7-2630QM with windows 7 home premium.
My problem is Toshiba includes instructions for the first start up and it says i can choose between 32 bit operating system and 64 bit operation system, but when i turned it on the first time it did not give me any option/choice.
Now ive got 6GB memory and can only use 4GB because its set too 32 bit system is there any easy way to change it as I dont have a windows disc, all the software is preloaded?

    Hi
I think this info is mentioned in user manual.
First of all you can create a Recover Disk with the Toshiba image.
You should create such disk using the preinstalled software called Toshiba Recover Disk creator (or Toshiba Recovery Creator).
Furthermore there should be a possibility to recover the notebook using the HDD recover.
During the HDD recovery, the setup should provide an option which would allow you to choose between the 32bit and 64bit.
But just one question: what A660-xxx do you have exactly?

  • Satellite A660 - cooling fan is running too slow

    Hello,
    i own TOSHIBA Satellite A660-10X
the problem is that fan is going slow (when notebook starts its going much faster than slows down). Problem is that the notebook is overheating and than it shuts down without any warning. I work on it and need to be reliable.
I've tried power management but there is only "batery optimized" or "maximum" but on maximum it is not going max for sure.
Is there any way to check Fan speed ? I tried several aplications to see Fan speed but they wont work.
And I never found Fan in BIOS.

    Hi buddy,
    > I cannot disassamble the bottom because there is no guide how to do that
Yes because such technical manuals are not for public. Only authorized service providers and Toshiba itself have such technical manuals. Furthermore if you disassemble the whole notebook you will lose the warranty.
    > Also i dont know if its normal but in back cover the round part doesnt have holes
You dont need holes directly under the fan. There is already a discussion about this question:
[Satellite A660-11M - Ventilation holes on body |http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=58398]
I think you should take the notebook to an authorized service provider for professional cleaning. Probably the thermal grease must be renewed too.
You can find a list here:

  • Satellite A660-18N - Screen it too bright so how to update the BIOS?

Hi guys, I need your help with this laptop because it is giving me a lot of problems.
I have changed the screen of this Satellite A660-18N because the one that was fitted in was damaged. I have installed it and is working fine but I'm having problems with the brightness. When I click - on the brightness it goes up and when I click + it goes down. It's way too bright and want to do something to fix it.
Does the bios help to fix this problem and how do I flash the BIOS on these laptops? I did flash BIOS on desktop pc but on this I can't see any way of doing it. Is there any way of fixing the screen without changing the BIOS? Some people said that I have to flash the BIOS because new screens wont work 100% with old BIOS.
    Please help
    Thank you

Thank you very much Xardas for your reply.
It is 3rd party screen. I bought it from ebay. They said that it's original. It says made from Samsung. The original one was also made from samsung. The guys from Toshiba said that you might have to update bios so that it will accept other screens. I told them which one I bought and they did confirm that it should work fine.
I wanted to flash the bios with the latest bios and maybe it could work fine. I just don't know how to do it? I did create a bootable usb and placed the bios in it but don't know the command to flash it. I did go in bios but did not find anything that would be helpful to flash.
I also was thinking to use some kind of software that makes it little bit darker. It's way too bright. My eyes hurt to use it. I always have to use sunglasses.
If you know anything it really would be helpful.
    Thank you

  • Satellite A660 turns off unexpectedly during heightened performance situations

    Hi,
I currently own a Toshiba Satellite A660, recently it has been shutting off unexpectedly when I play games.  I've always played these games before which is why it concerns me.  After it shuts down if I try to turn it on immediately the fan goes at full blast and it will turn off again and I must wait a few minutes for it to cool.  It seems like my computer is working too hard to cool the processor or whatever.
I cleaned up my disk space and am at 0% fragmentation so thats as far as my knowledge goes.
    Thank you

  • Satellite A660 - USB boot problems after BIOS update

    Hello,
I own a Toshiba Satellite A660 and recently have update the BIOS to the latest version (1.80). Since then the notebook will freeze on the boot screen (the one with the Toshiba logo) whenever a USB flash memory is attached.
It works without the flash memory connected and also if I connect it after I enter the boot menu or the BIOS setup. I can even boot from it like this.
As far as I am concerned this is a serious regression. Is there any way I can downgrade the BIOS version, or any other way to fix this issue ? I rely heavily on external USB drives.
    Regards,
    Claudiu.

I too am having problems with my A660 since upgrading to 1.80 bios - the HDD/SD utility, the pc health monitor and half the other toshiba utilities no longer work because they can't recognize the bios and actually tell me this... I get an error message telling me ''can't get bios type''...
On top of this I get the boot problem as well - I have to unplug half of my USB devices to get the laptop to boot properly...
And now - one month into owning my new A660 - after a hard drive failure, a problem with the Broadcom internal wireless adaptor I now have the internal TV tuner no longer working and have no idea how to fix it...
My gut feeling is that the sooner I can downgrade to the original factory bios the BETTER - and wait for another bios update to come along that is not faulty/buggy...
HOPE someone can help me with this...
    John.

  • Satellite A660: HW setup. Error1316 Network error occured

I have an annoying problem on my Satellite A660 that I cant fix. I have lost the use of my function keys as well as the flash card function. It seems to be related to the HW setup utility which wont open.
When I click on the icon this message comes up This application has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. I have tried to reinstall Hwsetup but it will not do so either by reinstallation or uninstallation and this message appears, T/ hw setup. Error1316 Network error occured while attempting to read from C. \Windows\installer\Toshiba Hardware Setup.msi
Error 1603 fatal error. Consult windows installer help (msi.chm) or MSDN for more info.
I have downloaded a fresh copy of Hwsetup but still no change. I have also tried to restore from much earlier restore points but again nothing changes. Would very much appreciate any advice, cheers Jeff

    Hi
    > Have even tried deleting HWsetup from Program files then doing ccleaner then trying to install hwsetup again but the installation package will only ask me if I wish to uninstall it not reinstall it even though its not on the hard disc,
This means that there is still some garbage of the HWsetup in the registry.
What to say; I use CCLeaner also and the CCleaner contains a option which helps to uninstall the installed applications too.
You should check this you should also clean the registry several times.
I think registry still contains a lot trance of HWsetup and its necessary to run CCleaner (registry cleaning) more than one time.
Otherwise you will need to delete the HWSetup traces manually but this is risky because you could damage the registry which means that the OS would not function properly.
The last resort would be new system recovery but I dont know if its a option for you

  • Which HDD can I use on my Satellite A660-13T?

    Hi,
I am looking for any compatible Hard Disk Drive for a Toshiba SATELLITE A660-13T as the one inside is dead now.
Such model shipped with the laptop is a TOSHIBA MK6465GSX 640 GB, SATA 2.6 Revision 3Gb/seconds 5400 rpm
Offical Toshiba vendors quoted me 130 euros por the same model.
I cannot get such model through any other shop or internet.
There are lots of different new TOSHIBA HDD in the market with bigger capacity and much cheaper than the MK6465GSK.
Can I install any new toshiba HDD on my SATELLITE A660-13T ?
Is there any toshiba page where I can find out which toshiba HDD are compatible with my SATELLITE?
Thanks in advance for your reply.
    Fernando

Fact is that notebook supports SATA controller.
This is the main and important information.
    > newer drives have a higher comsumption of power....which could cause some problems
SATA controller is compatible with different kinds of SATA interfaces (SATA I, II or even SATA III).
This means that even if you would use an SATA II/III compliant HDD, the notebook should be able to handle such device.
Therefore you will not find any information about supported HDDs because most 2.5 SATA HDDs are supported and the list providing all compatible HDDs would be too long.

  • Satellite A660-18N hanging and needs hard reboot

My Satellite A660-18N hangs every other day about 2/3 times. I cannot press ctrl + alt + del and the mouse does not move. I have to hold down the power button to reboot it manually. It started about 2 weeks after I got it which was in September. I watch a lot of videos online (and offline) and usually after the screen freezes/hangs, the audio continues and stretches. I thought that this was a problem with IE8 so I switched to Google Chrome but this still continues. This problem also occurs offline. Also, after my laptop hangs, the fan speeds up so I thought it was an overheating problem. I bought a cooling mat a few days ago and the system still hangs. I'm not sure what to do now, can anyone help?
    Intel core i7 q740 @ 1.73Ghz
    4.00GB ram
    64-bit OS
    Windows 7
Nvidia Geforce 310M 512MB dedicated video memory

I'm having the same problem as the OP, with my A660-11M.
At the moment the display is freezing a few times every day and it's been like this for the last week. Before that, (almost) no problems for a few months after having similar problems.
So, it seems to be coming in bursts which is, needless to say, bizarre.
I too experiences it mainly while watching video (and similarly the audio would continue after the freeze) so I disabled Hardware Acceleration in the FlashPlayer settings after reading this post:
    http://forums.toshiba.com/t5/Video-Display/Toshiba-A660-Screen-Freeze/td-p/189944
    But this didn't help.
Then I thought it might be Chrome, so I switched to Firefox 4.0.1 but this didn't help either.
Now, I have disabled the Flash plugin to see if that works - too early to say so far.
BTW, these days the crashing is occuring mostly when I am NOT playing video - although I don't play much video anyway.

  • Satellite A660 - cannot perform chkdsk

    I have a satellite a660 laptop..
My first question is about the win7 scan disk
I chose to do a disk check.. and win7 tells me that in the next startup it will be running.
When the computer restart, it shows the chkdsk countdown (if i want to cancel) but when the contdown ends.. its stuck and dont scan..
    I need to restart again..
    Any help ?
    My next question:
As far as i know ; the mouse pad is multi touch.. (enlarge pictures and rotate images)
Well , only the enlarge function is working.
I cant flip any pictures.. i try to use picasa software and also tried to flip the image in the built in image viewer of win 7..
    Any help?
    thanks :)

Try to scan the notebook using the CCleaner. It free tool which cleans the registry and the HDD.
    >As far as i know ; the mouse pad is multi touch.. (enlarge pictures and rotate images)
    >Well , only the enlarge function is working.
    >I cant flip any pictures.. i try to use picasa software and also tried to flip the image in the built in image viewer of win 7..
Im not quite sure about the touchpad functionality because there are different A660 with different hardware components and different properties.
If the touchpad supports mentioned function then you should check if it would be already enabled on the system.
For that you have to go to control panel -> mouse -> Device settings tab -> settings (maybe propeties).
Anyway, there you should find all options which are supported by touchpad software.

  • Satellite A660 - USB stick limited to 2MB/s

I have a Satellite A660 PSAW #C-047017. File transfers with several memory sticks seem to be limited to 2MB/s. Theoretically, it is significantly more than an order of magnitude higher. Is anyone else encountering this?

I'm running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. It's a fairly new machine. I got it last fall. I bought it with the OS pre-installed. The sticks are relatively new too, purchased within a year. I just drag a file folder to the stick and the fluctuating transfer speed rarely tops 2Mbps.
I opened the device manager and saw two icons, "USB controllers" and "USB Virtualization". Each of these two icons expands into a series of child icons, but there are no warning symbols beside any of them.
About chipset drivers, I'm currently in Canada. The PSAW number reflects a Canadian variation of the model, not a European variation. I just wanted to check how widespread was the speed limitation -- perhaps it is not just a Canadian problem. For all I know, this might be the standard for USB memory sticks.
I checked Toshiba Canada for USB driver downloads (http://support.toshiba.ca/support/Download/ln_byModel.asp). The only drive was something called "NVIDIA Stereoscopic 3D USB Driver". That sounds specific to NVIDIA, and there isn't much explanation about it. For that reason, I'm reluctant to try it.
I was just wondering if anyone else experienced the same bandwidth limit in transferring files to stick. Perhaps it's not a "problem" so much as a defacto standard.

  • Satellite A660 wont start again until i turn to safe mode

Just purchase toshiba Satellite A660: i tell the story to compensate closely to my answer, hopefully ..
I just purchase it new, run the insallation program for first use. When its up and running just within that day i noticed that it start to hang up when i hooked external drive for some program installation (adobe lightroom).
Its still fine but when i turn it off, it wont start again until i did turn to safe mode so that i could back up some of the files and run the recovery again.
This time on 64bit. When its finish its process, it works well for just a couple of hours.
It fell faster now thou, maybe because its on 64bit? ( any recommendation whether its 32 or 64bit) specs: i5 , 4ram, 1g ddcatd graphics , win7 home premium, ..
Now, when i turn it off it never start back again windows say.. start up repair. ..
I did let it run since this morning until now still they cant find whats the problem (i'm refering the loptop) .
So any idea on whats goin ?

    > It fell faster now thou, maybe because its on 64bit? ( any recommendation whether its 32 or 64bit) specs: i5 , 4ram, 1g ddcatd graphics , win7 home premium, ..
64bit Operating system is better if your notebook supports 4GB or more RAM.
Why? Because Win 32bit recognizes max 3.2GB even if more RAM is available.
This is 32bit limitation; no matter what OS it is; Linux, Win XP, Vista, Win7 etc
This is the reason why 64bit OS are so popular in the last time
    Regarding the OS issue;
    I recommend running a HDD recovery again... this means you should reinstall the OS usign the Toshiba recovery option;
Press F8 while powering up the notebook, Choose Repair my Computer, -> HDD recovery

  • Satellite A660 DVD/CD-ROM drive does not detect discs

    Hi there,
I have a Toshiba Satellite A660 with a MAT****A BD-CMB UJ141ES DVD/CD-ROM drive. It is about 18 months old and recently I have noticed that it does not recognise any CDs/DVDs. It makes a couple of noises once inserted but then stops spinning and nothing happens or changes in My Computer view.
Please note there seems to be no apparent problems with the drive:
    - It is present in My Computer
    - The device is working properly in device manager
    Things I have already tried:
    - Run Microsoft FixIt and CD-ROM/DVD Troubleshooter - both said it could not recognise media
    - Deleted upper filter in the registry as per many suggestions (no lower filter present)
    - Updated driver
I don't know what else to do. Please help as this is frustrating for a relatively new notebook which never is moved from my desk (don't expect many damaged parts).
    Cheers

As I said: clean the laser lens
If you open the CD/DVD drive you will see the small laser lens.
Use cotton wool tip and alcohol

  • Satellite A660: Remark and a question about illumination/mute button

    Remark:
Hi, I am a proud owner of a satellite A660-166 (3 days old) and I installed everything from scratch on the win 7 pro since I received my laptop with a home version (need pro for work)...I encountered some problems but this forum really answered all my questions :) Never found such a helpful forum for technical support. So I wanted to express my gratitude and my support for everything you do for the users :)
Problem: Well, it's not really a problem, more of a curiosity... I had some problems with the eco button at that point illumination/mute button was for mute....Thanks to you guys I found out what needed to be done, I reinstalled Flash card software and everything was working properly plus the illumination/mute button was for illumination now. I don't have anything against that, I prefer it that way, but I'm wondering how do I change that...I found some unanswered thread about using toshiba assistant and the illumination tab...Since my laptop is pretty new, I don't have an illumination tab, I was wondering how do I change the button to mute if I want to?
Thanks, keep up the good work!

It is nice to hear you found answers to your questions here. Many people here try to help.
Back to your issue: It is not easy to offer precise answer and I really dont know if you can change settings for one single button. I think it has something to do with registry entries but how to change it is another question.
If you use this button for illumination ON/OFF you can use FN+ESC for MUTE option so you will have both options that can be used using one single button or quick key combination.
Can you please test it and confirm it works properly?
