Satellite A665 - Create Recovery Data on External Hard Drive

Hi
I recently purchased my Satellite A665 and I am trying to create my Recovery Data on an external hard drive instead of CD's or DVD's. I am using Recovery Media Creator and it's not recognizing the attached Hard Drive in the USB and keeps asking me to attach the USB Flash memory. Anyone else having this problem or suggestions??
Bettina

I double clicked on the icon (under Finder/Devices). My choices are: Open, Open Enclosing Folder, Eject Free Agent Go Flex Drive, Get Info, Remove from Sidebar. Do you have any other suggestions?
I also tried double clicking on icon, then going to File. Only choice was "New Smart Folder".

  • Installing lion recovery on my external hard drive

After installing lion recovery on my external hard drive, it's not accssissible anymore. The external drive had two partitions, one fat and one Mac journaled. and now the mac one doesn't exist.
Using disk utility created a new partition which is 700 MB less than before, I guess it's because of the recovery partition. I am trying to recover my files using a data recovery software now.
Is there any way to restore my files back without using recovery softwares? They corrupt most of my files.
Did I do anything wong? any suggestion would be helpfull.

  • Recovering data from external hard drive

I backed up music, pictures and personal documents
It said backup was successful, I they to retrieve some documents and none of the those files were in that restored folder

    Very similar with your experience
Last time when I was in Rio, I took part in the famous Carnival there with my boyfriend and we took a lot of interesting photos there. About one week ago, one of my friends asked me to show her the photos. However, it turned out to be inaccessible and the PC can not read the data on the drive. And the PC suggested me to format the external hard drive for reusing it again.
people often lose their data from External hard drive, a handy external hard drive data recovery software will be highly recommended to you, ---- EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard
Launch EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard, Then click next button
Select the disk where you lost your data and click Scan button, the software will quickly scan the selected disk to find your target files.
Watch the video below, step by step, you can recover your data.

  • Recover data from external hard drive that was Windows format and connected on a Macbook Pro. Did I lose everything? What happened?

Hi there this is my first question here!
I connected my external hard drive originally formatted on PC on my new Macbook. The first time I connected it I could see all my files but today I connected it and after I couldn't see any file nor even on my pc appears as NO NAME with a different name and nothing on it. I think was reformatted, any help to recover all my data?
It's really important stuff for me

If the Apple Store couldn't get files off of the drive, it is unlikely that you will be able to. If you have backups, those would be the best way to go. You could also try booting up the computer and holding down T to boot into Target Disk Mode. Plug the broken computer into another one with FireWire and see if it works to recover data from external hard drive. If you can see it, try booting up the broken computer while holding down Option. Choose Recovery HD from the menu, then choose to Reinstall OS X.
It is unlikely that this will work, because I'm pretty sure that the Apple Store would have tried this. You could try using expensive software to get files off the drive, but it would be risky and the results might not be any good.

you can't - unless you're willing to void your warranty by removing the TC's HD from the device, put it in an external enclosure, and connect that to your computer.

  • Install data from external hard drive?

Hi, we have our old macbook data saved on external hard drive (old laptop had water damage but able to retrieve data). I now have new macbook, how do I install data from external hard drive to new macbook? Is it super easy? I didn't want to set up new laptop until I could understand how to install all our old data. Thanks

Do you have the appropriate cable to connect the external drive to to new Macbook?
If you do, the rest is easy. Connect the drive and start up the new Mac. The first steps in the setup will be to enter information about yourself, etc. etc. As you proceed you will be asked if you want to bring in data from another place. Just follow the directions, and the Mac Setup Assistant will do everything for you.
The critical part is making sure the external is corectly connected to the new computer.

The device may be formatted for Windows, as NTFS. The format is readable, but not natively writable on a Mac. To write to the device, you must either reformat it (erasing all the contents) or install third-party software to enable write access to NTFS.

There's Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant. The cleanest way to do it is Setup Assistant, but you only get that option once when you fire up a fresh install of OSX. If you're past that, you could reinstall OSX by booting with Command-R, or you could use Migration Assistant.

Have old MacBook Pro running tiger 10.4 want to save date to external hard drive and buy newer MacBook and still use same drive. Any suggestions, most  WD drives say nothing about os tiger 10.4. The OS compatibility  is much newer on the data.  Totally confused. Not a computer person.

I haven't checked reviews recently but there's a difference between bare drives and drives with enclosures.  Western Digital made some of the most reliable drives last time I checked, though the enclosures weren't all that great.  It is convenient to get both in one package but I usually buy a highly rated enclosure and then put a highly rated drive in it myself.  OWC sells some good enclosures but if they put a so-so drive inside of it then the package is only as good as its weakest component.  If you get a package from them, ask them what drive is inside (some vendors have no idea what's inside  -  went to an Apple Store recently and they couldn't tell me what was inside some of their Apple brand enclosures).  My first thought if buying a new drive would be to buy a OWC enclosure with a WD drive, but chek around because I may be out of date.
10 years ago Seagate was one of the best drives. Now they rate poorly in reviews.

  • To index data in external hard drives

I'm using Time Capsule 500GB and Seagate external hard. My iMac and these two hard drives are connected wirelessly. I want to index data in those drives by using Spotlight but I can only index information in my iMac's internal hard. What should I do to index data in external hard drives?

I resolved this problem. Just go to Time Capsule in Finder and search in the upper right corner of Finder! It was more easier than I expected.

  • How do I transfer time capsul data to external hard drive to free up space?

How do I transfer time capsule data to external hard drive to free up space?

The fastest method is straight copy and paste..
Plug a suitable hard disk into your computer.. format it Mac OS extended journaled (if not already).
Select the folders/files you want to move.. copy and paste them to the external drive..
Double check that the files are copied because the next step will delete the files forever.. there is no trash on the TC.
Delete the files on the TC.
You can also do a full archive of the TC disk to a USB plugged into it by USB.. it must be formatted Mac OS Extended Journaled. It must be big enough to hold all data on the TC disk.. best idea is to buy the same size or bigger.. so if you use 2TB TC buy a 2TB or bigger external drive.
    In airport utility select archive.
That will copy everything on the TC disk to the USB drive.. you could then Erase the disk of the TC.. this is super fast if you choose quick erase.. just a few minutes. But the archive will take many hours.. say for 2TB about 12-24hours.. and you cannot use the disk in the TC during that time.

  • Rescue and Recovery backup with external hard drive

When I first backed up my computer to my WD 1 tb external hard drive using R&R, boot files were placed on the drive.  Recently, some files I had corrupted my external hard drive and I had to fully erase it.  Now, after making the drive recognizable again, I went to go back up my computer using rescue and recovery.  This time, it asked me whether or not I wanted to make the drive bootable, I said yes, but an error popped up saying I needed 1000 more mb, even though I had 931 gb open.  The backup started anyway, but it did not include any boot files.  Is there a way to make the drive bootable the next time I backup?  What is the difference between nonbootable and bootable?  Help? Thanks.

I do NOT have a external Hard drive.  If you just zeroed the drive, it is blank.    Go into control panel, administrative tools, computer management, disk management.  See if you can get  a PROPERTIES of the external drive and post a Screen shot of that here.    This will show what partition(s) are there, Fat32 vs NTFS.  My experience is after you zero a drive, You have to boot your system, then use a Vendor (WD) standalone format utility or windows Disk manangement format, Make partition, etc.  The screen shot i need is the one that says: DISK 1  (d 298.09 GB NTFS
Healthy(active, primary partition).  This is what my 2nd drive, D, says. 1 partion on the drive.
When i added my second hard drive, it was blank.  Booted up, BIOS recognized drive, Then i Formatted it with windows disk managment.  I then pointed R&R to take backups to that drive.  Create rescue media then made a Master boot record, install standalone R&R boots files, then took the backup.   This makes my 2nd drive bootable, should i ever care to boot my D drive up and have R&R standalone program in control.  Thus i have 2 bootable drives.  C boots into windows, D boots into the rescue and recovery standalone program.  I can also boot my C drive into R&R by hitting PF 11 at startup (bios) time.
Which version of r&r you have? Which version of windows? Windows 7 changed the way Master boot records are written.
You can go into R&R, advanced menu,  create rescue media. Point to your External drive. WARNING. make sure the do not destroy existing  data block is checked.  IF YOU ARE brave, uncheck the destroy existing data.  This will erase everthing on the drive!!! <<Warning. And be sure NOT to  point to any drive you really love.
Buts lets  1st get the screen shot requested to make sure the drive is FORMATTED correcly.

  • Can't access old data on external hard drive.

    Hello all,
I purchased my Macbook Pro about a year ago, and never really had any problems unless I was slow on updating. Well, I recently updated, and that's when everything went to pot. My computer became really slow - constantly giving me the spinning rainbow ball - and it would do this for up to an hour. I would have to keep manually shutting down and restarting. Then, it would show a loading bar when I tried to restart, but then it would just shut off completely by itself, without ever fully loading. I tried Safe Boot, but to no avail. After that, I attempted to boot from the Mac OSX Snow Leopard disc, but that didn't work either, because it said the disc was damaged when I did a disc repair. So, I did one the other options in disc utility: Restore. However, I did this on an external hard drive (1 TB, Western Digital) that I had just purchased after the Safe Boot failure because my 250 GB was too small for me to run Time Machine on. I placed the Macintosh HD as the source and the external hard drive as a recipient, for I had read that this works effectively in transferring files before erasing the hard drive. I then erased the internal hard drive, and booted from the disc, completely reinstalling the whole system.
My computer works just as smoothly as it did before all this happened, but now there's just one problem - I cannot access anything off of the external HD. I can see the music and video files that I used to have in iTunes, and they are .m4v, .mp3 and .m4p, but iTunes and Quicktime do not recognize them. If I double click on them, it says the files are not complete (as with the Applications on the external HD). I cannot find any of my old Word Documents or pictures, just music and movie files, and Applications. When I plug my external HD into my computer, it shows up as "Macintosh HD" and a notification that it cannot be changed and that it needs to be reformatted.
Is there no hope in recovering my old pictures and Word Documents? They were all on my first 250 GB hard drive, but I erased that in attempt to make more room for Time Machine.
    Thank you for your help!

If you simply reformatted the drive, but didn't overwrite it with new data, there is a chance recovery software can recover your files.
You need something like DataRescue that reads the 1's and 0's of your files directly off the platters (not what anything else says) and you need another new drive to send those recovered files too when your doing it. (can't write to the same drive, it would overwrite the deleted data)
If you let TimeMachine use the drive, or you copied data onto it, or did a "Security Erase Option" then it's all gone, sorry.
Next time, once your all stable again, take a look at Carbon Copy Clone your entire boot drive (no filevault or bootcamp) to another HFS+ journaled formatted drive, it's hold option bootable and will save your bacon if a boot drive dies or if OS X gets hozed due to some unforseen software issue.
I maintain 2 clones, rotate them every few weeks, they get auto-upddated nightly.
TimeMachine I don't use, but if I did, it would be in addition to the two clones, as TM isn't bootable and is not quite reliable when you restore back from it sometimes.

  • How do i retrieve deleted data from external hard drive

I accidentally erased all my data from my external hard drive. Data included pictures, documents and movies. They are so important to me! Is there any possiblity for me to retrieve the files?!

So you deleted all the files and then emptied the trash already with them in there? Are they backed up anywhere for you to restore from?
There are 3rd party data recovery programs you can buy to try and restore the data, the success of the program recovering everything is not 100% and the program's success is decreased if you continued to write to the hard drive (by adding content) after the mass purge.
I've used Prosoft Data Rescue 3 with success in the past - http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php
You can find it for as low as $75 on the 'net if you shop around. To put it into perspective, data recovery service will run you (potentially) 7-10x more.
