Satellite A665-S5170 - display dim if goes to sleep or when i start up

Hi, everytime my Satelitte A665-S5170 goes to sleep or when i start it up my screen resolution is very dim and the only thing that solves it is to recalibrate the display in color managment settings.
Has anyone else had this problem?

Hey,
Can you change the display brightness by pressing FN+F6/F7 key combination?
Im a little bit confused about this Dim resolution. Do you mean a low screen resolution or dim display brightness?
If its related to screen resolution you could also try updating the display driver. Have a look on Toshiba website if you can find a newer version.

  • My iMac 2.8 goes to sleep randomly when I start typing.

The computer will wake up as I frantically hit the keys to wake it up, but it happens often enough to get very frustrating. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Thanks for the insight. I'm totally dreading a reinstall. I just bought a 1.5 TB hard drive to run Time Machine for a system back up. I'm wondering if this problem will carry over when I load Time Machine on the fresh reinstall and if it will work on a later version (10.6.1)?

My new Mac Air continues to disconnect from WiFi after going to sleep.  When waking it up I have to manually re-connect.  How do I keep it connected?

I had this problem too and solved it by doing a clean install. After that it was gone.
This is a drastic method since it takes quite some time to reinstall lion and all your software.
Thoughts I had why it started working after a clean install are the following:
It looked like the airport wasn't able to reconnect fast enough before the connection timed out. So what could have prevented my mac from being able to connect fast enough?
Apps that consume processor cycles. I love what I would call 'System Enhancers', little apps that enhance my workflow (Moom, Alfred, Dropbox, Default Folder etc). I'm not saying that these are the problem, they might be programmed processor friendly, but check if you have apps that consume processor cylcles. It might prevent airport from being able to reconnect quickly enough before it times out.
Mobile Config profiles. Another thought I had was that I had a mobile config 802.1X profile installed for the company were I worked. It used TTLS to connect to the corporate network. This profile might have gotten in the way.
    And a sidenote...
Routers with hardware acceleration might also be a problem. My router is a Wireless Gigabit Router 300N WL-351 and has hardware acceleration. As soon as I activate that my wifi connection keeps dropping. It is as if a Macbook Air can't handle that amount of optimisation.
That's it, hope it helps those who are still having the problem.
    Best, Jan

    What process is hogging CPU?
    Utilities > Activity Monitor.
Turn off Automatic Graphics Swtiching in System Preferences > Energy Saver, then change GPU to Better Performance.
The discreet graphics chipset is on the same diode as the CPU, so = heat.

  • How can I select shutdown & close the display w/o going into sleep mode?

I have learned to wait untill the MBP full shuts down before closing the display. In the past I have pressed shutdown closed the display only to find out later the MBP goes into sleep mode before fully shuting down. When I reopen the display the computer finishes the shutdown process or worse the battery is dead.
I would like to select shut down, close the display and walk away while the computer completes the shutdown process.
Is there any setup options or apps. that will allow this?
    Thanks, Joe
    (new to the mac)
    MBP   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Well hello there, and welcome to Macintosh.
Unfortunately you can't change anything to stop this from happening. The shutdwn process goes about its business killing processes and applications that have been running. The sleep process interrupts ALL business going on in the OS, and puts the machine into low power mode, as it is not aware of the nature of the running processes (in this case, the shutdown process), knowing only that they must be slept and the machine dropped into sleep mode. You gotta wait it out before you close the lid.
I would suggest sending a message in OS X feedback requesting this as a feature!

  • Macbook goes to sleep randomely when connected to Apple LED Display

I have  an issue with my Macbook Pro (2009 model) when it's connected to my 27' Apple LED Display. For no apparent reason that I can tell, it just goes to sleep at random, and after I wake it up by pressing a key (bluetooth keyboard), the mouse cursor looks messed up:
It might be a bit hard to tell from the blurry photo (I don't know of a way to take a screenshot with the cursor, so I used my iPhone), but it's too halves of the spinning beachball.
There's nothing in the console's log that indicates the reason for switching to sleep mode. It's also not the magnets of the Macbook pro used to detected when the lid is closed (I'm using the NoSleep utility that prevents that behavior). I've already tried resetting the PRAM. Also, this behavior never happens when the macbook isn't connected to the external display, so that probably aint a heating problem either (also the temperature readings are all in bounds).
Any help would be very appreciated, as that thing is driving me crazy.

    Jon,
Along the lines of my comment in your other thread. The battery connection cable between the logic board and the battery is also known as the "sleep/switch" connector. This little cable not only communicates battery power to & from the machine but also has a handle on regulating the machine's sleep process (and wake from sleep).
I've seen several MacBooks that have come across my work bench which are suffering from this exact issue you're describing and we're remedied by replacing that cable.

  • Screen goes to sleep even when viewing movies in full screen mode

Hi, I have adjusted my settings so my screen goes to sleep after 5 minutes which is ok. But it also does this when viewing movies in full screen mode.... Is this a setting somewhere? Thanx!

    Welcome to the Discussions!
"When the computer is inactive" or "idle" means when YOU, the user, are doing nothing, neither using the keyboard nor the mouse. So you have to increase that 5 mins in Energy Saver.

  • Windows 7 goes into sleep/standby when virus scanning and defragging

I've recently noticed that Windows 7 will apparently go into sleep mode in the middle of virus scan or hard drive defrag.  Needless to say, this is a bit annoying.  Windows is set to sleep after 30 minutes, but I can't understand why it's doing this if if the hard drive is being used for a virus scan or defrag.  I could jury rig a solution by increasing the time before Windows goes into sleep mode, but I can't understand why Windows is even eligible for sleeping in the middle of a pretty intensive system scan!  The scanning programs I use where I've noticed that this occurs are Security Essentials and Smart Defrag.
Anyone have any thoughts on why this is happening?

How long does the scanning procedure or defrag keep, more than 30 minutes?
If certain application is running at background (such as Defrag) after 30 minutes without user operating, the monitor will be turned off but the application is still running until it completes. Then, the hard drive will be turned off and the system enter in Sleep Mode completely. The symptom is by default.
If you would like to keep monitoring the status of defrag or scan, you should set the time longer than 30 minutes.
    Thanks,
    Novak

  • Macbook goes to sleep constantly when battery is installed

Hi, I have a black Macbook 13" The computer runs fine when it is running on AC with no battery installed. The minute I install the battery ( While the AC is still connected) it starts to go to sleep, I wake it and before I can even start to use it, it goes to sleep again, and again. I take the battery out, and it is normal.
I should note that I am running Snow Leopard
    I tried different batteries. Nothing.
I reset both the Pram and SMC and nothing.
Anyone know what the quick fix is?
    Thanks

  • Toshiba SATELLITE A665-S5170 external display wont work

i have removed the lcd screen as it was cracked. now when i go to boot up the computer it will go to boot into safe mode or normal. i click safe mode and everythign works fine. the display comes up perfect. then when i go back and restart and try to start it in normal mode the screen works up until the windows logo is done loading. then the screen goes to no signal. using a led tv and have it connected with an hdmi cord. i even tried using the vga into a different tv and still didnt work. Also i have tried hitting FN and F5 and it does not work. Im stumped and cant figure this out

It's probably due to no driver for the external monitor/TV your using. Try booting into safe mode again then go to the device manager, display adapter and uninstall any driver found. Then rebbot to normal mode. The unit should use a generic display driver. Then try to find a driver that is compatible with the monitor your using.

So a few months ago, my uncle passed away, and I now have his laptop. Even though he bought it in March 2011, he never used it, so it was practically brand new when I got it.
Long story short, everything was fine up until about a week ago. That is when I noticed something was wrong, but didn't know what.
Well I ended up just resetting it to factory settings. ()
At first I thought that after resetting it, everything would be fine, but I've had to do that with my old Dell Laptop.
    Well, everything is not fine.
Now I just keep getting the same message pop up on my screen every so often, telling me I have to "start the backup process"
But I did that already, and it keeps popping up.
But there is no pop up about a disk failure, or how to fix it.
So, I'm really, really hoping that someone can help me with this!!
I uploaded a screen shot of the pop up, so you know exactly what I see.
    Please and thank youu!!

It seems the hard disk is failing. The notice about backing up doesn't mean that the backup process will fix it. The computer has detected the hard disk is failing and needs replacing. It's suggesting you back up your data so that you can replace the hard drive. You could take it to a service center or try replacing the hard disk yourself. Replacing the HDD isn't usually too terribly difficult if you're comfortable. Somewhere on the bottom will be a door that can be removed to give you access to the drive. Sometimes there's a metal caddy on the drive, and sometimes there isn't it. If there isn't, you simply swap in the new drive. If there is, you'll need to remove the caddy and put it on the new drive. You'll want to ensure you have recovery discs though. You can use the Toshiba Recovery Media Creator (sometimes called Toshiba Recovery Disc Creator) to create back ups. Then you replace the hard drive, put the disc in, and start the recovery process.

  • Satellite A665-S5170

my laptop just died. I cracked the screen so I sat it aside for a long while (at least 4 months without it charging) and got it replaced.  I checked its the same extact screen that came on the laptop when I bought it from the store.  Everything was connected and I let it charge for a while.
After 8 hours of charging, I press the power button.  The led's come on, I hear the fan and then nothing.  The Charge LED comes on, the power and battery led lights up.  The hard drive comes on briefly.  Then you hear the fan speed up for about 5 seconds and then all lights go out and the it shuts off.  The Toshiba logo dont even appear on the screen.  It doesnt even look like the screen lit-up.
I've already tested the hard drive and memory, they are good.  Any suggestions would help, thanks in advance.

Next would be to remove the installed keyboard, and run just with the external keyboard, to see if it keeps from happening that way.  If it still types letters in with the installed keyboard removed, then there might be an issue with the motherbaord.

  • Satellite A665-S5170 reset to factory defaults

I purchased this laptop in Feb of 2011 from best buy, I went on vacation in April, left my father to house-sit and he used my computer. Claimed there were infestations of viruses and his "techie" friend installed linux mint OS on my computer and I want it gone.
I want my Windows 7 back but I didn't make any recovery discs because I hadn't had it too long and didn't have the chance (not expecting my dad to do something like that to it either). I know in some of the Satellite systems there is a separate partition for the system restore, can I access that without Windows on my computer anymore? It isn't dual booted, it's straight linux and I cannot STAND it. I also cannot afford to pay for the new install discs. Please help!
I can't use any of my programs and I don't like the alternatives. I want Windows back! Thanks for any help, it's VERY much appreciated!!!
EDITED TO ADD: Since the installation of Linux, my touch buttons do not light up or work, but i believe they may only work in conjunction with windows.

    Hi NaniApo,
Usually if another operating system is installed you are not able to start the HDD recovery anymore but you can try holding down the Zero key as Akuma wrote.
If it doesnt work your only option to restore the original factory settings is Toshiba recovery disk. If you dont have it you can order one from an authorized service provider in your country. On Toshiba website is a list with all ASPs.
I have read that you cannot afford to pay for a new recovery disk but on the other side I must say you didnt had time to read the user manual and you have to pay for this mistake. If I buy a new computer, TV or another multimedia device I always have time to read the user manual first and everybody knows how important it is. ;)
