Satellite C50-A0G1 - Optical Drive Unpacking - Preparation for Use

Have not been able to use the optical drive yet. (new laptop).
Does the drive come with a packing lock, or something? A CD will not fit over the central boss of the drive!

Answered, thank you Toshiba Help!

  • [Oracle JDBC Driver]This driver is locked for use with embedded application

    Hi
I installed Sun Java Studio Enterprise 8, and am trying to connect to my Oracle database using the attached tutorial code.
The code compiles fine, but I get the following error whenever I run the file: [Oracle JDBC Driver]This driver is locked for use with embedded application
I don't understand what is happening.
Using the Runtime navigation panel on the upper left of the IDE screen, I can right-click and connect to the database, and navigate database files, using the Oracle JDBC Driver that came with JSE8.
    Name: Oracle Driver
    Driver: com.sun.sql.jdbc.oracle.OracleDriver
    Database URL: jdbc:sun:oracle://JAZZPUP:1521;SID=REPO
If the driver is installed, and can be used to connect to a database by right-clicking on the database definition in the Runtime panel, why can't I connect to it just using java code in the IDE. I would expect both methods to work or to fail, not one of each using the same IDE.
    Many thanks and take care,
    Shayne

To summarize - the DataDirectDriver that is shipped with the IDE seems to be locked to be used inside the IDE only because of some licensing issues etc..
That's weird, I agree. I will raise a question on reasons for such a behavior.
The solution would be to use Oracle's own driver, that is distributed at no charge from their web site - http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/tech/java/sqlj_jdbc/index.html

  • This driver is locked for use with embedded applications - SQL Server

    Hello guys,
    Background:
I developed an application using JSC2 with MS SQL Server 2000 as the database and Sun Application Server PE 8 as App Server. During development, I am able to deploy and test it. But as soon as I've installed Sun Application Server PE 8 on our Production Server, exported my app there and tried to execute it, I get the error
"This driver is locked for use with embedded applications".
I just wanna ask, though I've seen other threads saying that the only solution is to buy the EE or SE of Sun App Server, isn't there really any work-around with this?
Thanks very much for your help.

OK, that is the same setup we have (Creator built application running with MS SQL Server).
I wrote a tutorial talking about integrating Creator with Spring. In it you will find out how to use SQL Server with a Creator built app running on the Platform Edition. That tutorial can be found here: http://swforum.sun.com/jive/thread.jspa?threadID=52657&tstart=15
    In short, look to jTds.
    Hope this helps.

  • Optical Drive keeps checking for a disk every 5mins

I was going to begin my own thread about this but I'm glad you've begun one already.
I'm having the same issue as you are and it's quite annoying. It's not only annoying but it makes me worry about the longevity of the motor in the optical drive.
A bit of history -- after my LCD backlight died on my original 2.0GHz MacBook Pro and after 3 repair attempts (all gloriously FAILED) by the Apple Store on Regent Street here in London (flagship store my eye!) it was decided that rather than attempt more repairs Apple would replace the machine. As Apple would only guarantee they'd meet the specs of my previous machine I was given a stock 2.4GHz unibody MBP. I received that machine 4 days ago, Thursday of last week. Out of the box it was exhibiting the phantom disc issues you describe, roughly every 5 minutes. The only time it wasn't making the noise was when I had a disc in the drive.
Assuming it to be a defective optical drive I booked a Genius appointment and the earliest I could get was earlier today. I took the old machine in and between the issue I described with the new machine and the recent repair debacle they decided to swap the new computer for another new one on the spot (which was good as I would have asked for that to happen had they not brought it up). For interest's sake, that first unibody machine also had 2 dead pixels.
Fast forward to when I get back to the flat and unpack the second replacement unit today only to find that after I restore from my Time Machine backup the optical drive is doing the SAME THING again. The new unit also has 3 dead pixels. I will be taking this machine straight back to Apple tomorrow to ask *** is going on and get some satisfaction.
One thing I did find, after some investigation, is that when the optical drive does its phantom ejection, there's a process started. If you watch Activity Monitor (sort by process ID, newest first) you'll see DiskManagementTool kick in when the noise is made. That's a component of Disk Utility however thus far I've not discovered what triggers it or why; however, I wonder if it's anything to do with some component that was on my original MBP that was archived via Time Machine migrated to the new unit. Because I've neither done a clean OS reinstall nor waited past the migration assistant to restore my data, I'm not sure if the drive makes the noise when my backup's not in use but I have this nasty feeling it wouldn't.
Anyone else having this issue, please launch Activity Monitor and keep an eye on it to see if the same process kicks in when the optical drive makes its noise. I suspect others will see that happen, meaning that's the first step in figuring out a solution. It really seems like it's a software issue so it should be fixable.

  • Satellite M645 S4070 optical drive problem

I have used my laptop for a year without problem.
Last weekend, i just noticed that my optical drive did not work any more.  When I put a DVD in, the drive indicator light flashed for couple seconds, then off.
I checked device manager, the system shows the optical drive information, but with a exclamation mark which means sth is wrong.
I uninstalled the driver and restarted my laptop.  It shows that the driver was not properly installed.
By the way, I believe that I already disabled ODD power on/off utility.  I use windows 7.
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you.

    Hi Peter,
I am having the same trouble as numerous others have mentioned on the board.  I have a Satellite L635 running Windows 7 and although I have had it for just about a year now, I have had no problems with the CD/DVD drive (very little used BTW) until today.  I've searched the boards and have done everything suggested...I already had all my power options where they should be (except my model does *not* have one specific for the optical drive--just the cooling method and FN Tab doesn't work on my model either), so I tried to uninstall the power saver, rebooted, and it didn't work.  I tried MS Fixit and it didn't work.  I went to the run command prompt and typed in regedit like another post suggested and went through those directions. All I had listed was upper filter, so I deleted that, rebooted, and found that it messed with my iTunes settings.  I had to install the lastest version of that anyways, so now, 7 hours later after the drive first took a crap, my iTunes is still giving me the message that "The registry settings used by the iTunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing.  This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning software.  Please reinstall iTunes."
After I had done the bulk of all of the suggestions, I rebooted and I was able to get info off of one disc, but then it crapped out again part-way through the second one.  Any other suggestions???

  • Swap optical drive with SSD for 4k video editing?

I've already swapped the original HD with an SSD 500gb and replaced the optical drive with the original HD as a secondary drive. That has worked nicely for a couple years. But now that I'm doing intense 4k video editing, I want to replace the HD in the optical bay with a 1tb SSD.
My question to you: Will the SSD perform at the same speed in the optical bay as it would in the main bay as a secondary drive? Or is there a speed limitation on the optical bay periphery and as such it's not worth putting a fast drive in there?
What alternative options would you suggest for video editing? My late 2011 Macbook Pro 2.5ghz core i7 with 16gb ram stalls when editing 4k footage off a firewire g-raid. I figured an internal SSD would perform faster and as a double benefit make my files portable without need for an external drive.

  • New MAC Mini w/OSX Lion - will not boot from USB or external optical drive when attempting to use BootCamp to install Windows 7?

The University recently purchased 6 brand new MAC minis for deployment in classrooms I support.  I am attempting to create a dualk--boot environment comparable to our existing computer systems, only these machines wil be running MAC OS X Lion and Windows 7.  After following the procedures outlined in the BootCamp on-screen prompts, and attempting a few techniques I found in the tech support user-base, I am still unable to get the MAC mini to boot up from the USB flash drive, or from an external optical drive, so that I can complete the installation of Windows 7.  When using the Boot option key at start-up, all devices are displayed suggesting that they are being properly recognized, however the computer boots to a black screen with an error message indicating that "No bootable devices are  found - press any key to continue." I am able to boot into the computer's internal drive, but not from any external devices.  I fully expected that the semi-automated BootCamp procedure properly prepares the USB device for booting, and for installing the Windows 7 OS.

Meh, with the price they take for a drive in Denmark, I don't think it's worth it... They take around 160 $ for the drive (that's the cheapest MacBook drive I could find), and I am not even sure that's the one I need.

  • Drive not ready for use

when i go to update my ipod, i get this error: "the drive is not ready for use; it's door may be open. Please check drive\device\harddisk2\DR4 and make sure that a disk is inserted and that the driver door is closed." then it proceedes to freeze up itunes and then the computer. So when i get this, i have to format my ipod so that i will be able to put music on it again. then after 3 or 4 updates the same thing happens. but never right after i format it. anyone have this happen before or know why this would happen? it is an older ipod, with the click wheel. and it does have the most recent update.

  • Drive not ready for use, door may be open

iTunes transfers about 800mb of content before error message appears:
The drive is not ready for use; its door may be open. Please check drive\...
I have restored, formatted, tried different PC's always get same result. Visited genius bar and they declared that my iPod was healthy but refused to move enough content to the iPod to reproduce the problem. iPod is a little under 2 yrs old.
My confidence and respect regarding Apple and it's products is now greatly in question. I spent $400 duchats on this thing and I am starting to feel like an unappreciated client.
    Thanks for any help...

    Hullo ...
let me follow up on this again. I've followed your advice, de-installed spybot, no change. I looked through the windows support help base, nothing. While trying out different things, I started getting a "delayed write failed" message, and I did some things they suggested (including adjusting the registry - me, adjusting the registry!)and it went away, and now all I get is the "open door" message again.
That is: everything works absolutely fine, I plug in the i-pod (latest version i-tunes and i-pod is up to date), it's recognized instantly by the explorer as well as i-tunes. I've run all scans you can possibly run on it, and it is fine (no corrupt files, nothing). I've restored it twice through i-tunes, twice through the explorer. I've changed the drive letter.
It starts the synch fine (it's still almost empty after the last restore), but at some point, I get the error message. Interestingly enough, *up to* that point, it'll synch fine - I can disconnect it and play on it whatever's been synched thus far. I can also modify my i-tunes settings and preferences, all of which i-tunes will recognize and adhere to. It is just unwilling to put more than 1GB of stuff onto my 20GB i-pod.
Something I've noticed is that it is sometimes indicating apparently faulty charges in the beginning (though that is quickly corrected once the synch starts), as in, it'll recognize a certain amount of audio files, but also claim a random amount of "other" files, which should not be there (apart from the 30MB or so of genuine i-pod software).
Anyhow. I haven't seen any solutions to this on the forums or in the apple help files, but people appear to be having this problem still. Any ideas or input would be very much appreciated ...
    Thanks.

  • What is the best way to remove personal data from the hard drive in preparation for selling my old Mac?

I am going to sell or perhaps donate my old Power Mac G5.  Is there an easier, yet comprehensive way to remove my data from the hard-drive?  My best approach is dumping anything I do not want found into the trash.
I am running Mac OS 10.5.8 on the powermac G5

For better security than the simple Erase (which does not actually over-write the data blocks, only clears the directory), choose Security Options, and Zero all data, one pass.
After a Zero all data, the only way to recover the data is to dis-assemble the drive in a clean room and use expensive test gear to recover a little of the data. That is good for all but Military Secrets.
If you really trust no one under any circumstances, remove the drive and beat it to death with a hammer.
